When Evan began drinking in high school at age 16, he thought alcohol was the greatest thing on Earth. He found it easy to balance everything in his world - social life, academics, a part-time job, sports. In college partying became more important, and he barely graduated. As he began his career, Evan worked hard and played hard, committed to never changing his drinking. Then stuff started happening. A drunken fall left his ankle permanently damaged. He began wetting the bed. He drove under the influence. He drank to excess with his dad who then ended up hospitalized with chest pains. By this time, Evan was a husband and a father. He caught up with a college friend at a party - the friend had stopped drinking and credited This Naked Mind with his success. A few months later, Evan decided to address the monster in his life. He and Annie talk about how he became unstuck, found freedom from alcohol, and the wisdom of a local hero that keeps him focused on the present. Have you tried The Alcohol Experiment? Tara from Lynwood calls in because, to prepare for weeks of home quarantine, her boyfriend Evan bought a giant new TV and subscribed to a bunch of streaming channels. She says they already had a TV and have plenty of choices to watch with Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime but now he has signed them up for HBO, Showtime, Disney+, CBS All Access, and bunch of stuff she’s never even heard of like Acorn and BritBox. And Tara is really upset because he put all of this on credit cards and thinks with so much uncertainty in the economy now is not the time be adding to their debt, especially with stuff they don’t really need. When Evan comes on he says these ARE things they need because they could be house-bound for months and he wants to make sure they have plenty of entertainment. And he says he bought the second TV for her, so that they can each have their own private time to watch whatever they want. Which makes Tara wonder, is Evan looking for a way to get away from her inside the house?

Then one of them goes missing. In a Philadelphia neighbourhood rocked by the opioid crisis, two once-inseparable sisters find themselves at odds. One, Kacey, lives on the streets in the vise of addiction. The other, Mickey, walks those same blocks on her police beat. They don’t speak anymore, but Mickey never stops worrying about her sibling. Then Kacey disappears, suddenly, at the same time that a mysterious string of murders begins in Mickey’s district, and Mickey becomes dangerously obsessed with finding the culprit–and her sister–before it’s too late.Alternating its present-day mystery with the story of the sisters’ childhood and adolescence, Long Bright River is at once heart-pounding and heart-wrenching: a gripping suspense novel that is also a moving story of sisters, addiction, and the formidable ties that persist between place, family, and fate.
Believe it or not, the origin of Seth Rogen’s incredible acting, writing, and producing career traces all the way back to Bar Mitzvah class in Vancouver. That’s where twelve-year-old Seth met Evan Goldberg, a fellow movie enthusiast who loved writing just as much as Seth did. A creative partnership between the two began instantaneously, and they started writing what would become Superbad, inspired by their own high school escapades, by the time they were thirteen. “We always wondered if our very specific high school experience would be relatable to other people, because we were just writing what happened to us as Jewish Canadian boys in Vancouver. It seemed pretty niche.” Of course, it became one of the most successful movies about high school of all time.As his writing career post-Superbad took off, so did his acting career. Within the span of a few years, he became the face of American comedy, working on hit films like The Pineapple Express, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and Knocked Up. In fact, he had so much success over that span of time, he just assumed that was how the business worked: “I didn’t appreciate how miraculous that streak was. At the time, I was like, ‘Oh, great. You make a movie. It turns out great. Everyone loves it, and you make tons of money. Perfect.’”Eventually, he learned that wasn’t always the case—and as the movie budgets got bigger, so did the stakes, with more creative pressure and input from studio executives. It took one bad experience as a studio’s most expensive movie for Seth to realize that it was more important for Evan and him to maintain their artistic freedom than make the highest profile movie. To this day, he holds onto that philosophy and it’s why he still loves making movies, including his newest film Long Shot, a political romantic comedy starring Charlize Theron and himself. “When Evan and I make a movie like Long Shot, and we’re able to sit in a theater and watch the audience laugh at and feel what we hoped—it’s really gratifying. It means they’re invested in the same things we are.”Seth joins Off Camera to talk about why moving to Los Angeles for a role in Freaks and Geeks was his version of going off to college, how he and Evan turn an idea into a full-fledged movie, and why saying no to a role on a CW sitcom early in his career wasn’t a hard choice at all.
095 | Evan Delahanty Shares How to Make Your Own YES in Business Evan Delahanty is the Founder and CEO of Peaceful Fruits, a social good snack startup that employs people with disabilities to make healthy, delicious, rainforest-friendly fruit snacks. Peaceful Fruits has been featured on NPR and ABC’s Shark Tank and is focused on scaling sales and production after a successful pilot. Prior to launching, Evan graduated from Walsh Jesuit High School (2003), Cornell University (2007), and then worked in operations management before serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Amazon interior of Suriname, South America. When Evan came back to the United States after serving in the Amazon with the Peace Corps, he knew that he wanted to find a way to bring back a small piece of his experience to his friends and family - or really, anyone who would have it. That’s when Peaceful Fruits was born. Ethically sourced, 100% fruit snacks, NO processed crap - it was a shoo-in! Everyone wants that, right? The funny part was, Evan was met with a lot of NOs - but not from his target audience! They loved it. Evan spent a lot of time working on the Peaceful Fruits brand. He had a story to tell, and couldn’t wait to share it. However, manufacturing was another situation - NO one would co-pack his product. In fact, Evan called at least 180 manufacturers, digging deep on Google, hoping to find someone who would believe in Peaceful Fruits as much as he did, and take a chance on a small fruit snack brand. Then, Evan made his own YES. Tune into this episode to hear how he did it! My guest on this week’s Success Unfiltered, Evan, had to learn that sometimes you’ll hear a lot of NOs before you finally find a way to make your own YES! If you’re feeling discouraged by how many NOs you’ve heard, then this is a MUST LISTEN episode of Success Unfiltered! Enjoy, and thank you for listening and tuning into Success Unfiltered! I’ve got 3 ways that you can turn a NO into a win (and maybe even a future YES)! Grab my guide to surviving rejections in business and making them work for you right HERE! Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode: Michelle introduces Evan. Evan is this month’s Shark Tank guest. Evan shares a little about who he is and what he’s created. The biggest NO that Evan experienced happened on the manufacturing front. He shares the full story in this episode. Evan called 180 people to pitch manufacturing his fruit snacks When no one would work with him, Evan went and made his own fruit snacks in a local restaurant’s kitchen at 2 a.m., when they weren’t using it. When Peaceful Fruits began to grow, Evan said YES to hiring the best team ever! Peaceful Fruits employs people with particular disabilities, like Down’s Syndrome and Autism. Evan employed developmentally disabled people, creating fair wage jobs for his team. “You see that early adoption, you see those people starting to get excited about it. That tells you, you've got to keep swinging to try to find a way to make more.” ~ Evan Delahanty After appearing on Shark Tank, Peaceful Fruits was contacted by Sendik’s Grocery chain and it took almost a year before he met with them. The first month in Sendik’s didn’t go quite how Evan had hoped. He shares exactly what happened in this episode. “You must control yourself and not act on your first thought.” ~ Evan Delahanty Evan appeared at many of his own demonstrations, due to the size of the company, and found that he had to say YES to his ideal client and “toughen up” when people who were not his target audience said NO to his product. Evan knew that he had people interested in buying his products but if they can’t see the product on the shelves, no one is going to buy. Evan shares how he remedied that. Follow up with stores carrying Peaceful Fruits was key - as Evan followed up and made sure signs and point of sale systems were set up, sales increased and more people learned about his brand. Getting into Whole Foods would be a dream for Evan, but he knows his company wasn’t quite ready when they had their first opportunity. Evan has learned that by waiting he and his company would be in a better position the next time around. Evan shared what he would tell his younger self. Entrepreneur, author, speaker, and YouTube influencer Evan Carmichael, shares how he built a network of connections to grow his blog readership and YouTube channel, which is nearing a million subscribers. Evan's Journey Evan publishes daily content YouTube to help entrepreneurs achieve their full potential. He was passionate about entrepreneurship from a very young age, but because being an entrepreneur wasn't the path most people followed, he thought he would become a banker. It was only when he went to college that he partnered with friends and started his first business. After selling his business a few years later, he dedicated himself to empower entrepreneurs to succeed. Your influencer marketing story: Evan Carmichael's position as an influencer Partnering to win When he first started his YouTube channel, he didn't have "an agenda." But then, inspired by Bill Gates, who recommended partnering with others who have the same audience, he was moved to seek influencers. Starting to connect with influencers He was successful connecting with his first 2 YouTube influencers because he was a true fan of their channels. He also found an angle that would appeal to their audience, so he suggested 3 ideas that would be helpful and relevant. Evan didn't get a "yes" immediately. He followed up as many times as needed. "It just seemed natural," he says. Building momentum To build his network, he reached out to people who he already knew in search for relevant connections to contribute content for his blog. He was introduced to Guy Kawasaki and Seth Godin, who agreed to contribute to his blog. Evan's first connections led to new contributors for his blog. Same approach worked for his YouTube channel. "You keep pulling sweaters to get to the front of the line." What works and doesn't when pitching to an influencer Generic doesn't work; authenticity does When Evan receives generic pitches, he rejects them. On the contrary, when he's approached by people who're active on his channel, he takes notice and wants to learn more. "If someone leaves a comment 5 or 6 times, (...) you click on his profile (...) Maybe I end up reaching out to him because it's a potential fit." Value comes first Even when you share influencers' content on social media, always add a comment that brings value. Building a name (your own platform) is a way to attract influencers. Choose a platform that matches what you're great at. Do what comes naturally to you. Pick a path and be consistent--otherwise you'll give up! Keep on looking until you find a way When Evan was writing his book, Your ONE Word, he wanted to interview the CEO of Starbucks. He asked everyone in his network, trying to find his way through. Eventually, he connected with the CEO's book's ghost writer on Twitter. He sent her a video to tell her what he found most impactful about the book, and then asked for an introduction. The ghost writer introduced him to corporate PR, and even though the timing didn't work, he was able to reach people in the highest ranks at Starbucks because of his reaching out to the ghostwriter. "You have a goal, and you just attack it from every possible angle without giving up!" Evan says. One thing you're most excited about Evan is excited about his new book, The Top 10 Rules for Success. The book is meant to be read one page at a time. Each page will give you 2 fantastic ideas from legends in business that you can then apply into your own life. Resources and tools mentioned Evan says he has a "massive disrespect for tools," because tools will not save you when things go wrong. Start with you. With zero tools you can still dominate. Don't let the tools become an excuse. Evan's best tool is his own YouTube channel--all about mindset adjustment and becoming inspired to achieving your highest potential. Book: Your ONE word, about finding your core value to grow your business. Evan’s motto #BELIEVE More About Evan Carmichael Evan Carmichael #Believe in entrepreneurs. At 19, he built then sold a biotech software company. At 22, he was a VC helping raise $500k to $15mil. He now run EvanCarmichael.com, a popular website for entrepreneurs. He breathes and bleeds entrepreneurship. He's obsessed. Aiming to help 1 billion entrepreneurs. Change the world. He has set 2 world records, uses a stand-up desk, rides a Vespa, raises funds for Kiva, wears 5-toe shoes and created Entrepreneur trading cards. He speaks globally but Toronto (#EntCity) is home.
