For the last two months, listeners around the world have been hearing a deeply reported true-crime podcast investigation – the first of its kind – into the notorious Canadian case of a mild-mannered Ottawa sociology professor, Hassan Diab, who France recently convicted of being the terrorist who blew up Paris' historic Copernic Street synagogue in 1980. Although Diab has no intention of serving out that life sentence in a French prison for the murders of four victims, and the wounding of many others: the professor from Carleton University claims he is innocent, was nowhere near Paris, was never mixed up in terrorism and is the wrong man. And, despite already spending nearly 27 years under suspicion, including some locked behind bars or on tight bail conditions, Diab's fight to prove he's a scapegoat has now received some renewed support. The Canadaland _news platform has published a six-part series called “The Copernic Affair”. It raises serious questions into how French officials prosecuted the case, using incomplete or inadmissible evidence, a weak Canadian extradition system, and by France's historic need to bring someone, anyone, to justice for a terrorist attack that's deeply etched into their national memory. Diab's many supporters, including some Jewish Canadian leaders, regret how the man's life has been ruined, facing calls for him to be fired at work, and ongoing death threats to his family in Ottawa. On today's episode of _The CJN Daily, Ellin is joined by the two journalists behind the unique investigative series: Alex Atack is a senior audio producer, often for The Guardian, and Dana Ballout, an Emmy-award winning documentary producer, with bylines on This American Life, National Geographic/ Disney+, The Wall Street Journal and Al-Jazeera. Karina Gould says she is a Zionist; she is raising her kids to know the Jewish traditions, and she is fiercely proud of her Jewish heritage, including the legacy of her grandparents who survived the Holocaust. With just under a month to go before the federal Liberals choose a new leader on Mar. 9, Gould—the only candidate of Jewish heritage—announced she had cleared her party's $225,000 fundraising hurdle before the deadline last Friday. But she will have to come up with an additional $125,000 by Feb. 17 to remain in race. Gould is campaigning against front-runner Mark Carney, formerly governor of the Bank of Canada; former deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland; and also former Liberal MPs Ruby Dhalla and Frank Baylis. Gould was first elected in Burlington as part of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's majority sweep in 2015. At 29, she became the youngest female cabinet minister in Canadian history when Trudeau appointed her minister for democratic institutions in 2017. But after nine years in office, Gould says Canadian voters have lost faith in the Liberal party. She also recognizes that traditional support from Jewish Canadian voters has all but evaporated because of her government's recent wavering stance on Israel and the spike in domestic antisemitism. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, Gould joins host Ellin Bessner to explain how her Jewish identity shaped her and outline her policies on Israel and Jewish issues: why she would continue funding UNRWA, for now; how she wants to see all hostages released unconditionally; how she'd handle the arms embargo on Israel, and why Trump's plan to rebuild Gaza is a hard "No". Over the past few months attacks that hit Jewish schools, community centres and synagogues have shaken Canada's Jewish community. For some Jewish-Canadian parents, there is now a question of whether it's safe to send their children to Jewish schools.“Right now, it's a bit fraught to be very Jewish out in the broader world,” says Kim Werker, a Jewish-Canadian mother with a 13-year-old son. We speak to Werker and another Jewish-Canadian mother about these concerns, how they've been coping and how challenging it has been to talk to their children about the war in Gaza and antisemitism in Canada.Help us make Front Burner even better by filling out this audience survey.

I was joined by Canadian Journalist & Author Jeremy Appel (@JeremyAppel1025 on Twitter) for this episode. He discusses his Zionist upbringing and how ”blind support for Israel was instilled” in him from a very young age…. and how he came to question the narrative he grew up with. We also chat about the endless examples in the current political climate, of deliberate distortion, disinformation and inversion both by the media and Israel lobbying groups, the suppression of left leaning, pro-Palestinian Jewish voices, and the targeting of racialized journalists who question the narrative. We also discuss the recent bizarre meltdowns of one of Canada's (supposedly) leading media critics; Jesse Brown of Canadaland. It's a fascinating case study in how someone who otherwise looks at the media with a critical eye, has decided to double and triple down on standard Zionist talking points, no matter how blatantly dishonest the framing may be. Charles and Senator Paula Simons dive into how propaganda is occurring again and how the youth view democracy in North America. They discuss the sensitive issue of unsealing information on the Holocaust file, with Simons sharing her personal connection to the topic and the insult caused by a recent incident in Canada. Senator Simons also discusses complexities of naming individuals mentioned in a commission report, including those who were not Nazis but were affected by the war effort, and how Ukrainian Canadian and Jewish Canadian communities must have nuanced conversations about WWII history, acknowledging shades of gray in the conflict. Senator Simons also questioned the difficulty of accessing government archival records, particularly those related to the Holocaust, due to their physical nature and lack of digitization, and acknowledges the complexity of government decision-making and the need for transparency in releasing historical records, while also expressing frustration with the slow pace of progress in this area. Finally, a wonderful glimpse into the inner workings of passing laws when Senator Paula Simons discusses the challenges of passing legislation in a timely manner.
Artur Wilczynski has choice words to describe what happened in the Canadian House of Commons on Sept. 22, when lawmakers gave two standing ovations to a 98-year-old former Ukrainian solider who served with a Nazi unit during the Second World War. Wilczynski, a former diplomat and senior civil servant in Ottawa—and the grandson of a Holocaust survivor—calls the scandal an “absolute public relations disaster for Canada.” Wilczynski was stunned as he watched the incident unfold during Friday's official ceremony in the House to welcome Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Canada. After the leader of the war-torn country made his formal speech, the Speaker of the House, Anthony Rota, recognized the presence of Yaroslav Hunka in the public gallery. Rota called Hunka, who lives in Rota's riding of North Bay, a Canadian hero—but it soon was discovered that, in fact, he had actually fought for the Nazis and against the Russians, as part of a notorious Waffen-SS unit known for massacring Jews during the Holocaust and committing atrocities against Polish civilians. The Speaker has since announced his resignation, effective Wednesday night. But observers, including Wilczynski, say the damage will have long-lasting repercussions on Canada, NATO and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Wilczynski joins The CJN Daily to unpack how such a failure in protocol could have happened—and what Canada needs to do to fix things. Next week, on Sept. 12, Israel's High Court is set to hear appeals of a key plank in the judicial reform plan of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government. The core issue is a law, passed by the Knesset in July, that curbs the court's use of what's called the “reasonableness” doctrine—a doctrine that allows judges to review controversial government decisions and political appointments. The opposition says that new law gives politicians too much power, while supporters say the unelected judges use the reasonableness doctrine too often to defy the will of elected officials. The Knesset took a break for the summer, and won't reconvene until after the High Holidays, on Oct. 15. But that doesn't mean the protests and political turmoil have gone away. And while the chaos unfolds in the Holy Land, Canadian Jewish leaders are figuring out how to navigate the crisis domestically and abroad. On today's The CJN Daily, host Ellin Bessner returns to bring you her conversations with CIJA's Shimon Koffler Fogel; Miriam Pearlman, the past president of the Canadian Reform movement's ARZA organization; and Michael Kerzner, Ontario's Solicitor General, who is urging Jewish schools and synagogues to apply for security funding before Sept. 12. On Sept. 13, 2022, at the Holten Canadian War Cemetery in the Netherlands, an early Remembrance Day memorial service was held to honour the more than 1,000 Canadian soldiers buried there. They fell in battle in the spring of 1945, shortly before the Second World War ended, liberating the area from Nazi occupation. Elliott and Jonathan Shiff were the only Jews on the trip. They were commemorating their great-uncle, Sgt. Harry Bockner, a former fur salesman from Toronto who was killed when his light anti-aircraft gun crew came under attack during a manoeuvre codenamed "Operation Cannonshot". More than 500 Canadians became casualties during that operation, including Bockner, a stocky redheaded sergeant who had already survived nearly 18 months on the front lines of Italy. The Shiff brothers join The CJN Daily today to discuss their great-uncle's life and legacy, how they felt accepting an invitation to join a group of veterans' children visiting the battlefields of Holland, and why they brought some earth all the way from Jerusalem and Toronto to place on his grave. This weekend, after spending 15 years as an arts writer for The Globe and Mail, Marsha Lederman is debuting her new opinion column for the paper. The shift comes just a few months after the debut of her book, Kiss the Red Stairs, which chronicled her parents' experiences in the Holocaust and how intergenerational trauma has affected her life. Those themes have led to her having a strong reaction to Holocaust denial and antisemitism today. And while she won't reveal what she plans to write about in the paper, she knows readers will be anticipating her perspective as a Jewish Canadian with opinions about difficult subjects—including the conflict in the Middle East. Lederman, who recently contributed to The CJN Magazine, joins Ellin for an in-depth discussion about her lengthy career, how her book is educating people about the Holocaust and what her aspirations are for her new national platform. The debut NHL season for the Seattle Kraken has not been kind. They've won just four games so far, losing 10 and tying one. They rank last in their division, and have slunk near the bottom of the entire league. One of the few bright moments, however, came at the expense of the Montreal Canadiens—the Kraken beat the Habs 5-1 in their first-ever franchise victory. It was a bittersweet moment for Mitch Garber, who watched the historic game from the owners' box in Seattle. Garber—a lawyer, businessman, investor and respected philanthropist in his native Montreal—is a minority owner of the upstart hockey squad, and now finds himself making monthly trips to the West Coast to support his new team. Garber joins to discuss his involvement with the Kraken, the connection between Judaism and hockey, and how he torn feels when his new Kraken kids face off against his beloved Canadiens. In early May conflict flared up in the middle east between Hamas and Israel. This led to multiplied thousands of rockets being fired and a conflict lasting more than a week leaving more than 200 people dead in Israel and the occupied territories. Most casualties were in the coastal region of the Gaza Strip where Hamas was firing heavily from. A truce was mediated by Egypt emphasizing to both parties the importance of protecting innocent civilians. This year's violence is a part of an ongoing conflict that has now lasted more than 70 years - for most Jewish Israelis and Palestinians it is all they have ever known. Here in Canada, in spite of concerns surrounding possible spread of COVID-19 protests occurred in various locations across the nation in support of Hamas. Many in the Jewish-Canadian community made statements regarding Israel's right to defend themselves from Hamas attacks and also called for peace. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada will provide $25 million to Palestinian civilians affected by the recent conflict. With 10 million going towards urgent assistance for affected civilians, 10 million going to rebuilding efforts and 5 million to peace-building initiatives between Palestinians and Israelis. The loss of human life has been nothing short of devastating and many in Israel - Jewish, Israeli and Arab citizens alike are driving for peace holding solidarity rallies in regions where they have lived together peacefully for decades. Here with me from just outside of Jerusalem to give his perspective on the recent events, insight on the history that has led to this point and possible solutions for lasting peace is Calev Myers. Calev is an accomplished Israeli attorney, civil rights advocate and founder of ARISE – Alliance to Reinforce Israel's Security and Economy. In this video, Jennifer talks about how she used oral histories to refute the dominant historiographical notion that Jews did not participate in homefront war activities. In fact, Jewish women's participation in home front activities carried a much different meaning and weight than it did for other women due to their Jewishness. In our conversation, she showed quotes from her oral history participants and paired them with photographs with little information attached, to demonstrate how the histories of Jewish women's experiences during the war can be lost without speaking to the women themselves. Believe it or not, the origin of Seth Rogen’s incredible acting, writing, and producing career traces all the way back to Bar Mitzvah class in Vancouver. That’s where twelve-year-old Seth met Evan Goldberg, a fellow movie enthusiast who loved writing just as much as Seth did. A creative partnership between the two began instantaneously, and they started writing what would become Superbad, inspired by their own high school escapades, by the time they were thirteen. “We always wondered if our very specific high school experience would be relatable to other people, because we were just writing what happened to us as Jewish Canadian boys in Vancouver. It seemed pretty niche.” Of course, it became one of the most successful movies about high school of all time.As his writing career post-Superbad took off, so did his acting career. Within the span of a few years, he became the face of American comedy, working on hit films like The Pineapple Express, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and Knocked Up. In fact, he had so much success over that span of time, he just assumed that was how the business worked: “I didn’t appreciate how miraculous that streak was. At the time, I was like, ‘Oh, great. You make a movie. It turns out great. Everyone loves it, and you make tons of money. Perfect.’”Eventually, he learned that wasn’t always the case—and as the movie budgets got bigger, so did the stakes, with more creative pressure and input from studio executives. It took one bad experience as a studio’s most expensive movie for Seth to realize that it was more important for Evan and him to maintain their artistic freedom than make the highest profile movie. To this day, he holds onto that philosophy and it’s why he still loves making movies, including his newest film Long Shot, a political romantic comedy starring Charlize Theron and himself. “When Evan and I make a movie like Long Shot, and we’re able to sit in a theater and watch the audience laugh at and feel what we hoped—it’s really gratifying. It means they’re invested in the same things we are.”Seth joins Off Camera to talk about why moving to Los Angeles for a role in Freaks and Geeks was his version of going off to college, how he and Evan turn an idea into a full-fledged movie, and why saying no to a role on a CW sitcom early in his career wasn’t a hard choice at all.
