Did a Japanese admiral really say America could never be invaded because there would be "a rifle behind every blade of grass?" It's one of the most repeated quotes in American history, cited in speeches, books, and debates for decades. This week, Michael Kent follows the trail back through wartime records, biographies, and historical research to discover where the quote actually came from, why historians reject it, and how one sentence became more famous than the evidence behind it. Ask Me Anything and takeaways of the day featuring Andy, Randy, Beau, and Abe.
In this college football podcast episode, we briefly step out of preview mode for a college football news reset. While we were working through the ACC and Big 12, the rest of the sport kept moving, beginning with another strange development at North Carolina. We discuss Mike Lombardi’s reported leave of absence, what it adds to the growing collection of Bill Belichick-era drama in Chapel Hill, and why Tar Heels fans did not exactly greet the news with despair. Then we dig through the most memorable moments from SEC, ACC and Big 12 Media Days. Lane Kiffin contemplates mortality, Jon Sumrall brings an unmistakable level of intensity to Florida, Pat Narduzzi makes another bold conference comparison, and several SEC coaches begin building the case for nine-win College Football Playoff teams. We also consider Greg Sankey’s acknowledgment that conversations about an SEC and Big Ten breakaway are real, even if nobody is quite ready to explain where those conversations might lead. Finally, with fall camps opening around the country, we look at the quarterback competitions worth tracking. What could a freshman starter mean for Tennessee? Is Alabama’s apparent favorite ready to take control? Which uncertain situations at Arkansas, Iowa and elsewhere could reshape an entire season? We also ask how many of these competitions are truly open and how many are exercises in keeping quarterbacks engaged during the transfer portal era. Ecuador Isn't Just a Destination—It's a Fresh Start. What if one trip had the power to completely change the direction of your life? For author Lindsey Goldstein, that's exactly what happened. Long before she became a published novelist, Lindsey spent a gap year living in Ecuador—a decision that shaped not only her love of travel but ultimately inspired her debut novel, Gap Year. In this episode of The Travel Brats Podcast, Lindsey joins us to share how Ecuador became her second home, why she believes it's one of the world's most underrated destinations, and how travel has the power to transform us at any stage of life. Whether you're dreaming of hiking through the Andes, snorkeling in the Galápagos Islands, wandering colorful markets, or simply looking for inspiration to take that first leap into the unknown, this conversation is a reminder that adventure doesn't have an age limit. Meet Our Guest Lindsey Goldstein is an author, traveler, and lifelong advocate for meaningful travel experiences. After taking a gap year in Ecuador as a teenager, Lindsey returned several times over the years—living in Quito, volunteering in the Galápagos Islands, conducting research, and building lifelong friendships along the way. Those experiences eventually inspired her novel Gap Year, a story about rediscovery, courage, and finding yourself through travel. During our conversation, Lindsey shared not only the inspiration behind the book but also practical advice for anyone considering Ecuador as their next destination. In This Episode Here's what you'll hear during our conversation: Why Lindsey chose Ecuador for her gap year How living abroad shaped her confidence and independence The real inspiration behind her novel Gap Year Why Ecuador deserves a spot on every travel bucket list Lindsey's favorite destinations throughout Ecuador Solo travel tips and lessons learned Ecuadorian food you shouldn't miss Safety myths about South America Why it's never too late to reinvent yourself through travel Why Ecuador Left Such a Lasting Impression Many travelers overlook Ecuador in favor of larger South American destinations, but Lindsey believes that's exactly what makes it so special. Despite its relatively small size, Ecuador offers incredible diversity. Within just a few hours, travelers can experience: The Andes Mountains Colonial cities The Amazon Rainforest Pacific beaches Indigenous markets The Galápagos Islands Very few countries pack so many unforgettable experiences into one destination. As Lindsey explains throughout the episode, Ecuador isn't just beautiful—it's incredibly accessible, welcoming, and full of opportunities for meaningful cultural connections. Lindsey's Favorite Places in Ecuador Throughout the episode, Lindsey shares several destinations that continue to inspire her years after her first visit. Quito Ecuador's capital combines colonial architecture, rich history, incredible mountain views, and vibrant local neighborhoods. Lindsey recommends spending time exploring the UNESCO-listed historic center and riding the TelefériQo for panoramic views of the city. Cuenca Often overlooked by international travelers, Cuenca quickly became one of Lindsey's favorite cities. Its walkable streets, charming cafés, beautiful churches, and relaxed atmosphere make it an ideal destination for travelers looking to slow down and experience everyday Ecuadorian life. The Galápagos Islands For Lindsey, the Galápagos remain one of the most magical places on Earth. During the episode, she shares unforgettable stories about: Snorkeling with sea lions Watching giant manta rays Camping on an active volcano Wildlife encounters found nowhere else in the world Conducting research on the islands It's clear why the Galápagos continue to capture travelers' imaginations. The Amazon Rainforest Lindsey also recounts one of the funniest stories from the interview—her mother's unforgettable reaction after discovering an unexpected frog inside their rainforest cabin. Moments like these remind us that the best travel memories often come from the experiences we never planned. One of Our Favorite Takeaways Travel isn't just about seeing new places. It's about discovering new facets of yourself. Throughout our conversation, Lindsey returns to this idea again and again. Living abroad forced her outside her comfort zone. She learned Spanish. She navigated unfamiliar cities. She built friendships across cultures. She became more independent. Those experiences ultimately shaped who she is today. It's a powerful reminder that the greatest souvenirs aren't things—they're the confidence, perspective, and resilience we bring home. Ecuadorian Foods Lindsey Recommends No trip is complete without trying the local cuisine. Some of Lindsey's favorites include: Humitas Quimbolitos Fresh choclo with local cheese Ají (Ecuador's beloved spicy sauce) Fresh tropical fruit from local markets She encourages travelers to explore neighborhood markets and family-owned restaurants to experience Ecuador's incredible culinary culture. Is Ecuador Safe? One of the most common questions travelers ask is whether Ecuador is safe. Lindsey believes many of the concerns surrounding South America are based on outdated perceptions. Like any destination, Ecuador requires common-sense precautions. Stay aware of your surroundings. Research neighborhoods. Secure your belongings. Use reputable transportation. Trust your instincts. For Lindsey, those practices allowed her to enjoy years of incredible experiences throughout the country. Why "Gap Year" Isn't Just for Teenagers Perhaps the biggest lesson from this episode is that reinvention doesn't have an age limit. Lindsey's novel centers on an adult woman whose life changes unexpectedly before she embarks on a transformative journey through Ecuador. The message resonates far beyond the pages of the book. Whether you're: Changing careers Recovering from burnout Becoming an empty nester Retiring Looking for a fresh start Travel has the unique ability to offer perspective, healing, and renewed confidence. Sometimes changing your surroundings changes everything. Favorite Quote from the Episode "Travel isn't about escaping your life. It's about returning home with a new perspective." Travel Brats Take One of the reasons we loved this conversation is because it reminds us why we started The Travel Brats in the first place. Travel isn't simply about checking countries off a list. It's about collecting stories. Meeting people. Stepping outside your comfort zone. Learning something new about the world—and about yourself. Lindsey's journey through Ecuador perfectly captures that spirit. Her experiences remind us that some destinations stay with us forever, shaping not only the memories we make but the people we become. If Ecuador wasn't already on your bucket list, we have a feeling it will be now. Life doesn't have to be perfect for you to keep moving forward. In this episode, Rachel shares a personal story from one of the most emotional and exhausting weeks of her prep journey—and the powerful lesson it taught her about discipline, awareness, and the behaviors we practice every day. This isn't really a story about muffins. It's a conversation about what happens when life interrupts your plans and how the women who reach the next level learn to respond differently. If you've ever felt like you're trying so hard, only to have life knock you off track, this episode is for you. In this episode, you'll learn: Why willpower isn't your greatest asset How practiced behaviors become your default under pressure The difference between craving food and craving relief Why awareness always comes before lasting change How to stop starting over and begin recovering faster Simple ways to design an environment that supports your goals What it means to control the controllables Why your identity is built through repeated decisions—not perfect ones Your Action Steps This Week ✅ Identify your "muffins." What's the thing you tend to reach for when you're stressed, tired, overwhelmed, or emotional? Become aware without judging yourself. ✅ Practice ONE behavior. Choose one simple habit to repeat every day this week. Examples: • Eat protein with every meal. • Drink your water before coffee. • Track breakfast every morning. • Take a 10-minute walk after dinner. Master consistency before adding more. ✅ Audit your environment. Ask yourself: "What in my environment is making my hardest moments even harder?" Then make one change that supports the woman you're becoming. Reflection Questions What keeps pulling me away from the person I want to become? Am I relying on motivation or practiced behaviors? What emotion usually comes before my hardest decisions? What's one behavior I want to become automatic? What can I control today? Favorite Quote "You don't rise to your goals. You fall to your practiced behaviors." Ready for More? If you're looking for coaching that goes beyond macros and meal plans, Rachel would love to help you. Words have a way of finding us exactly when we need them. In this episode, we share 22 quotes that have inspired, grounded, and guided us through different seasons of life. This conversation was sparked by a listener who asked us: What are the quotes you return to again and again? So we gathered the words that have stayed with us—and the meaning behind them. We'd love to know: what quotes have shaped your life? Quotes: “The women I love and admire for their strength and grace did not get that way because shit worked out. They got that way because shit went wrong and they handled it. They handled it a thousand different ways on a thousand different days, but they handled it. Those women are my superheroes.” -Elizabeth Gilbert “The more scared we are of a work or calling , the more sure we can be that we have to do it. Resistance is experienced as fear. The degree of fear equates to the strength of resistance. Therefore the more fear we feel about a specific enterprise the more certain we can be that enterprise is important to us and the growth of our soul. “ Stephen Pressfield from “War of Art” “The wound is the place where the light enters you. “ Rumi “Love is the most powerful force in the world. If people tell you the opposite of love is fear, it is not so. Love just is. Love has no opposite, it's the answer to everything, everything. Where there is disharmony, wherever there's pain, whoever there's hunger or wherever there is sorrow. Just send love. Not only to humanity, but to all of life. To the rivers, the oceans, the forest, to the animals the birds, the bees to air you breathe. To the whole cosmos because you are part of the one, we are all part of the one. There is no separation. “ -Delores Cannon “Let your heart break, so your spirit doesn't.” – Andrea Gibson “Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act , just once, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love.” -Rainer Maria Rilke “Letters to a Young Poet” “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you do, but they will never forget the way you made them feel”. Maya Angelou “To strive for perfection is to kill love, because perfection does not recognize humanity.” -Marianne Woodman “How to do the thing you are afraid to do. Grab fears by the hand, grab hope by the hand and start walking.” -Cleo Wade “Nothing has as strong of influence psychologically on your environment, and especially on your children, than the un-lived life of the parent.” Carl Yung “Of course I've changed darling, I've grown.” -Cleo Wade “Aging is no accident. It is necessary to the human condition, intended by the soul. We become more characteristic of who we are simply by lasting into later years; the older we become, the more our true natures emerge. Thus the final years have a very important purpose: the fulfillment and confirmation of one's character.” – James Hillman “You are the sky, everything else is the weather.” – Pema “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And if I'm only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when? -Hillel “The best thing to hold onto in life, is each other.” – Audrey Hepburn “Your new life is going to cost you your old one. It's going to cost you your comfort zone and your sense of direction. It's going to cost you relationships and friends. It's going to cost you being liked and understood. It doesn't matter. The people who are meant for you are going to meet you on the other side. You're going to build a new comfort zone around the things that actually move you forward. Instead of being liked, you're going to be loved. Instead of being understood, you're going to be seen. All you're going to lose is what was built for a person you no longer are.” – Brianna Wiest “I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles.” – Audrey Hepburn “She knows that she'll get her butt kicked if she chooses aliveness , her light will blind others, her darkness will not let her fit in, her success will provoke conflict, her ways of healing will be judged, her enemies will want her to cower, and fear will do it's best to take her down. So she draws a circle around herself and keeps opening up, because aliveness is freedom. She's embracing the risk to bypass the ordinary and she's exactly what the world needs right now.” -Tanya Markul She Book “Strong back, soft front, wild heart.” – Joan Hallifax / Brene' Brown Past Episodes You Might Like with Kate & Betsy: Episode 100: The Upper Limit: Living In Your Full Potential Episode 80: Self Compassion: The Secret Sauce of Life Episode 153: Connecting to Soul as a Path to Abundance Episode 55: Boundaries & Self Sabotage LIVE PODCAST EVENT Seasoned Wisdom Date: April 1st, 11am – 1pm Come soak up the wisdom that only comes from age…A signature event of the Water Bearer Collective in partnership with the Tend HER Wild Podcast. Today I'm joined by Brownell Landrum, author of The Art and Science of Wishing and founder of The Cosmic Wish Experiment. We explore how wishing engages over a dozen different sciences - from neuroscience to quantum physics - and discover the difference between ego goals and cosmic wishes that come FROM the universe, not from our conditioned mind.About Brownell Landrum:Brownell Landrum is the author of The Art and Science of Wishing and founder of The Cosmic Wish Experiment, a global grassroots effort to elevate collective conscious energy through a simple, fun, and free process based on solid science. Her research reveals that wishing is a universal practice woven throughout every culture and faith tradition—one of humanity's most powerful expressions of hope, intention, and survival. As a storyteller, she quotes over 70 scientists, bridging the spiritual and the scientific.Key Insights from Our Conversation:Cosmic Wishes vs. Ego GoalsMost goals come from our ego/conditioned self—we think we need X to be happyCosmic wishes come TO us when we're not looking—from the quantum field of unlimited possibilitiesAccess them through curiosity and questions, not forcing: "What is actually aligned for me?"The Power of Responding to LifeWe're here to respond to life - to feel in our body what feels right and wrong. This takes courage because it leads us into the unknown. Most people stay in "false security" instead.Want vs. NeedOur "wants" come from ego. Our "needs" come from our body, our soul, our inner knowing. Distinguishing between them helps us access what's truly aligned. The Body IS the SubconsciousBrownell's biggest wisdom: Name your body and communicate with it as a separate identity. Instead of forcing, make it a game: "If we finish by noon, we can have the afternoon off." The body will rally to help you.Elevating Collective ConsciousnessIt only takes 5% of humanity to create a ripple effect. If people spend just one minute a day being peaceful, positive, and purposeful, it patterns the brain to do it more.Favorite Quotes:

President Jeffrey R. Holland passed away earlier this week, and he and his family have been in my thoughts are prayers. I share many quotes that I appreciated and loved from President Holland in this episode. I will miss his amazingly positive influence in my life.

If someone were to make a documentary about your life, what moments would you want them to highlight? In this heartfelt episode, Nicole Jansen sits down with master storyteller, creative entrepreneur, and Heritage Films founder Chance McClain. With a background as diverse as his documentaries—army veteran, sports radio pioneer, musician, and filmmaker -Chance McClain has crafted more than 800 cinematic documentaries dedicated to preserving family legacies. Together, Nicole Jansen and Chance McClain dive deep into the art of legacy storytelling, the healing power of forgiveness, and why capturing the nuances of real life transforms memory into meaningful heritage. Discover how documenting your life, no matter how imperfect, can serve as a gift to future generations, shape family values, and mark a new chapter for your family's story. What We Discuss in This Episode If a documentary were made about your life, what stories and moments would you want to include? How is Chance McClain's eclectic background helping him capture family legacies? Why do families need to document their stories now, not later, and how do imperfections make stories more valuable? What role does forgiveness play in transforming family histories and breaking negative cycles? What surprises emerge when interviewing family members, and how do vulnerability and authenticity deepen connection? How can any family, regardless of budget, begin documenting stories today? What role does technology and curiosity play in modern storytelling? How do family values and cycles repeat or change—and what choices do we need to make for transformation? What message does Chance McClain want to leave for his children and future generations? Practical resources and first steps for preserving your family's legacy. 10 Key Takeaways for Preserving Your Family's Legacy Your family's stories are not just anecdotes—they're vital carriers of values and lessons for future generations. Imperfection adds authenticity; it's better to record your story now than wait for the "perfect" time. Technology—from phones to AI—makes documenting memories easier than ever. Vulnerability and real moments, eye rolls included, transform documentaries into true heritage. Forgiveness breaks cycles, allowing families to heal and grow in new directions. Every family has hidden struggles; acknowledging them opens doors to deeper connection. Consciously choosing which stories and values to highlight sets new legacy standards. What you say about yourself (busy, tired, "hard") shapes your mindset and actions. Collaboration with loved ones enriches your family film and honors your unique story. Legacy means giving roots and wings: the truth of where you came from and the freedom to chart a new path. Favorite Quotes from Heritage Films Founder, Chance McClain "Forgiveness matters. At some point, you've got to just cut it and forgive." "It's not just the stories, it's the values you're really capturing." "If you take out the quirks, you're lying. Keep it real." "You can break cycles or continue them. It's a decision, and willpower is key." As women, we often have a difficult time calling ourselvesby the right name. This might be due to how we have been treated in life, our own woundedness, or just an overall lack of understanding about who we are and whose we are. Have you ever caught yourself referring to yourself as dumb, stupid, fat, clumsy, or worse? I can assure you that the Creator of theUniverse calls you many beautiful names. There is an amazing story in the Gospels that describes awoman who undoubtedly felt less than adequate or valuable in any way. However, Jesus calls her "Daughter of Abraham," a name that had never been used or heard before. This was no mistake, and certainly deserves a deeper look. Women are so multi-faceted and wear so many hats, yet in all of that, wecan easily lose our identity, and our REAL name. Listen in as Tiffany Jo Baker speaks with Rosie DiBianca, author of the book, He Calls Me Daughter.
