How do international schools get their start- in particular the original ones from so many years ago? Many of them had very humble beginnings, with a handful of students, a few parents (usually spouses of diplomats or business people who had moved overseas) and a large house or a few rooms where lessons could be held. At 71 years of age, The Lincoln School in Kathmandu, Nepal is one such school. In this “case study-style” interview, we were lucky enough to be able to speak with Barbara Butterworth, who was head of the school from 1998 - 2005. Barbara is an educator whose career originally took her to Nepal as a Peace Corps Volunteer, where she taught math and science. She also taught science education at two different colleges and served as a principal/director at four different schools: a private elementary school, a public elementary school, an international school, and a noted Nepali high school. From 1998 to 2005, she was the director of the Lincoln School, the American international school in Nepal. A graduate of Wellesley College, Cornell University, and Stanford University, Barbara's career in education has also included leading a major USAID teacher training project in Cambodia. Our Guiding Questions were, “At 71 years of age, Lincoln School is one of the “OG” international schools. In her role, she provides training and technical assistance, develops original resources, and collaborates with partners to enhance the ability of multidisciplinary professionals to recognize and respond to stalking. Julia's work in gender-based violence began more than 15 years ago as a college student, when she worked at a rape crisis center and as a peer health educator. Since then, she has worked as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Tanzania, in gender integration in global health with USAID, and to improve how multidisciplinary professionals identify and respond to domestic and dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.SPARC (Stalking Prevention, Awareness, & Resource Center) is a federally funded project providing education and resources about the crime of stalking. SPARC aims to enhance the response to stalking by educating the professionals tasked with keeping stalking victims safe and holding offenders accountable. To stay up-to-date on SPARC's resources and offerings, follow us on social media (Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter) @FollowUsLegally and/or subscribe to our quarterly newsletter. SPARC does not provide direct services to victims. We recommend that stalking victims work with a local victim advocate, and the Victim Connect hotline can help connect victims with one. Local victim advocates can help plan for safety, discuss legal options, and connect victims with additional services. Victim Connect can be contacted at https://victimconnect.org/ for online messaging and information, and by phone at 1-855-484-2846. Local domestic violence and sexual assault support services/organizations often work with stalking victims/survivors, even when those victimizations are not part of the stalking. Unfortunately, there are no hotlines and few support service organizations that specifically work with victims/survivors of stalking.Hosts: MaryAnne Metheny, Ilene Shehan, and Tina JohnsonIf you are in an emergency, call or text 9-1-1.For information about our services and how Hope House can help, call our 24-Hour Hotline at 816-461-HOPE (4673) or the National Domestic Violence Hotline 800-799-7233.hopehouse.net

If there is one thing on our collective minds these days, it is the issue of politics. But for all the interest it piques, much of it remains a mystery to the American public. Bestselling author and journalist Casey Michel, who tackled the problem of financial corruption in his first book American Kleptocracy, sheds light on an issue that may be unknown to those outside the Capitol. In Michel's new book Foreign Agents: How American Lobbyists and Lawmakers Threaten Democracy Around the World, he details how one group has worked as foot soldiers for authoritarian, repressive regimes. In the process, they've not only established dictatorships and spread kleptocratic networks, but they've successfully guided U.S. policy without the rest of America being aware. And now, Michel asserts, some of them have begun turning their sights on American democracy itself. These Americans are known as foreign lobbyists, and many of them spent years laundering reputations and getting cozy in Washington with dictatorships. Michel writes of foreign lobbyists throughout history–including those who built alliances with Mussolini and the Nazis, but also contemporary Americans: in law firms and consultancies, among PR specialists and former lawmakers, and even within think tanks and universities. Foreign Agents illuminates these figures past and present and determines that they pose a threat to the future of American democracy. Casey Michel is an author, journalist, and director of the Combating Kleptocracy Program with the Human Rights Foundation. He is the author of American Kleptocracy, named by The Economist as one of the “best books to read to understand financial crime.” His writing on offshoring, foreign lobbying, authoritarianism, and illicit wealth has appeared in Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, Foreign Affairs, and The Washington Post, among other outlets, and he has appeared on NPR, BBC, CNN, and MSNBC, among other stations. He has also testified in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on the links between illicit financial networks and national security. He received his Master's degree in Russian, Eurasian, and East European Studies from Columbia University's Harriman Institute, and served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in northern Kazakhstan. Foreign Agents is his second book. Dr. Katy E. Pearce is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Washington and holds affiliations with the University of Washington's Ellison Center for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies and the University of Washington's Center for an Informed Public. She is the chair of the Communication and Technology Division of the International Communication Association and is an associate editor at the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication. Prior to that he wrote, “My Saddest Pleasures: 50 Years on the Road.”  His Peace Corps experience totally changed his life. His publications include features of Guatemalan cultural and political leaders, as well as focus on the crisis of democracy which was spearheaded by the quest for cheap labor and to enrich the wealthy, which has been destructive for the majority of Indigenous Guatemalans. It is critical to learn more about countries in South and Central America, especially given their geo-political proximity to the US. In both Guatemala and the US, there has been a frontal assault on the freedom of expression, especially with books being banned by elected officials in states such as Florida and Texas.

Belonging in a word that is being thrown around a lot in the workplace, and in the world.  What is the impact of not having community.  I think we're seeing the backlash in some of the mental health statistics, crime, division and many other huge societal problems that we're seeing.  Charles  Vogl (https://www.charlesvogl.com/) is trying to change that, and help high stakes (and other) organizations build community so they can collaborate when lives are at stake!  He has 3 amazing books on the topic, but in this episode he shares several of his strategies to help bring people together. In this episode we talk aboutThe time he spent living in a homeless shelter, and in Zambia with the Peace CorpsSome of the key components to creating genuine human connectionThe 3 promises that need to be understood for people to “stay in the room” and feel a part of and contribute to the community that's being created there.   Want more from Charles?  You can find it all on his website.  www.charlesvogl.comCharles began his lifelong study of change making while a volunteer living in a Santa Ana, CA homeless shelter. He then worked on human rights in Sub-Saharan Africa as a Peace Corps Volunteer, and later built teams to create high social impact media as a NewYork documentary filmmaker. His PBS film work won several international awards, including the Amnesty International Movies that Matter Award. All the work served as crucibles in which to learn the importance of and how to bring people together around shared values and purpose.Charles teaches the wisdom and principles to build deep community and resilient relationships in the most lonely era in organizational history. His work draws on three thousand years of spiritual traditions to understand how individuals build loyalty, strengthen identity, and live out shared values.Building a deep community in turn builds organizational resilience, attracts and retains community members around shared purpose and values, and fosters innovation that disrupts industries and influences global change. He holds an M.Div. from Yale, where he studied spiritual traditions, ethics, and business as a Jesse Ball duPont Foundation scholar.Link:

From Moldova to Tajikistan, from Belarus to Uzbekistan: The Formulation and Flow of National Identity from the Late Czarist Times to Today Riordan will explore the formulation of identity over the past 150 years in Moldova, Tajikistan, Belarus and Uzbekistan. Drawing on decades of on-the-ground work and research across all four countries, Riordan will discuss his findings on the trajectory of national identity and how it continues to shape the political discussion in each country today. About the Speaker: John P. Riordan is a career Foreign Service Officer in the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). He currently serves as the Deputy Mission Director at USAID/Moldova. Prior to Moldova, he was on assignment as a Development Advisor to U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) in Tampa, Florida (2017-2020). Riordan was the USAID Country Director in Uzbekistan (2014-2017), where he served for multiple, extended periods of time as acting Deputy Chief of Mission. He was also USAID's Country Director in Belarus (2009-2013). In both Belarus and Uzbekistan, Riordan pioneered the leveraging of Baltic partner expertise and regional knowledge in order to advance shared objectives. He was recognized in 2017 with a Diploma of Commendation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia for his decade contribution to fostering a close relationship between Latvia and the United States and in jointly providing support for Belarus and Central Asian countries. Riordan was the USAID Development Adviser to the command group at Combined Joint Task Force 101 and 82 in Bagram, Afghanistan (2008-2009). Riordan served two assignments in Iraq (2006 and 2008, respectively) as the Deputy Director of USAID's Governance and Provincial Reconstruction Team Office during the U.S. Government “surge,” and then helped to launch the Joint Interagency Task Force at Multi-National Forces-Iraq. Riordan was honored to be the first Foreign Service Officer selected for an academic year in the Advanced Military Studies Program at the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas (2007- 2008). While there, Riordan produced a monograph, Red D.I.M.E., which drew on original research on the Basmachi Resistance Movement against the fledgling Bolshevik forces of the Soviet Union in the Ferghana Valley region of Central Asia in order to apply historical and political lessons to irregular warfare in complex, adaptive environments. Before joining USAID, Riordan lived and worked in the Ferghana Valley region of Central Asia. He lectured at Ferghana State University and was the first American to conduct research in the Ferghana City archives as a Fulbright scholar in Uzbekistan. How can love help us to step out of the perceived reality of “what is possible” in building peace during conflict? Turning points in conflicts and crises are often mysterious, require acts of enormous creativity, and a willingness to risk. Social change is an artistic act, mobilizing love and prophetic imagination–and it requires us to step into the mystery of the unknown that lies beyond the far too familiar landscape of violence. In this series, join Host Serena Bian in speaking with three people who bear witness to the best and worst of humanity, holding a courageous moral imagination. Working and witnessing the front lines of injustice, war, climate change, these peacebuilders, mystics, storytellers hold space for the miraculous to emerge, refusing to be bound by a perceived reality of “what is possible.” Events in the serves Monday, April 29 | Deepa Patel Weds, May 29 | Aljosie Aldrich Harding Tues, June 25 | Kalyanee Mam Aljosie Aldrich Harding Reared in segregated North Carolina, Aljosie began learning, teaching, and building social justice skills along with organizing in the 1960s as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Lome, Togo, West Africa. Today, panelists, Ashley Frost and James Maloney, Deputy Directors, Office of HIV/AIDS USAID, discussed USAID's localization initiative, locally-led development, and the importance of diversified local partners. They discuss USAID's Global Health work, how USAID supported PEPFAR and the successes it has enjoyed, including statistics of lives saved and changed.   James Maloney and Ashley Frost share the new PEPFAR five-year strategy, the USAID Approach to HIV and Optimized Programming (AHOP). AHOP is a framework for USAID to employ assets through efficient, measured, and simplified programmatic approaches to ensure resilient and country-led approaches to the HIV response. The AHOP defines five critical pathways through which USAID will assist countries in sustaining epidemic control and accelerating progress in those that have not yet achieved the 95-95-95 goals. Each pathway outlines planned results and time-bound milestones. If this resonates with you, share successes with Congress to fund the five-year reauthorization of PEPFAR.   IN THIS EPISODE: [00:32] Mike Shanley outlines key talking points regarding the accomplishments that PEPFAR has achieved over the last 20 years, delivering unprecedented impact in the global fight against HIV AIDS.  [02:57] Ashley Frost and James Maloney describe their roles at USAID as Deputy Directors.  [04:40] Discussion where funding originates, the investments they make at the primary healthcare level, and successes they have accomplished through PEPFAR, stating that USAID is the largest donor and they are advancing work in the HIV vaccine space.  [11:00] James shares statistics of the impact made in the world attributed to PEPFAR and reflects on the history of growth and prevention.  [14:50] Discussion of localization, local entities and partners and relationships within country-led staff and senior diplomats in their countries.         [20:06] Looking forward to goals and objectives, James discusses the AHOP framework in response to HIV.  [25:24] Ashley comments on the importance of keeping an open dialogue between all partners within the HIV AIDS space, and James outlines the importance of seeing the 5-year reauthorization of PEPFAR.    KEY TAKEAWAYS:  Oftentimes, hospitals and building new infrastructure is what gets a “ribbon cutting”, but in terms of buying the best health outcome with USAID's investments from U.S. taxpayers, the first area of importance is investments made at a primary care level, which will most impact healthcare outcomes, saving lives and supporting healthy lives. The second thing that drives a lot of USAID's investments across individual disease or health areas is health security. Much of PEPFAR's success lies in engaging with local partners. With regard to localization, the Office of HIV AIDS and the Global Health Bureau have been the front runners in the agency and have been able to guide our agency in these spaces. Right now, about 58 percent of our resources are implemented through local entities, and those sets of partners have been diversified. Small business engagement in the U.S. is essential and has much to offer to the work we can accomplish together. More significant international partners have specific skill sets that are necessary for USAID. As we think about localization, everyone needs to think outside the box and remember that one size does not fit all.  By the end of 2025, the vision is to help countries reach what the USAID calls the global commitment of 95-95-95 goals. That means that 95 percent of those who have HIV know their status. 95 percent of those individuals are on treatment, and 95 percent of those individuals would be virally suppressed. The AHOP defines five critical pathways through which USAID will assist countries in attaining these goals.  RESOURCES: Aid Market Podcast Aid Market Podcast YouTube Mike Shanley - LinkedIn James Maloney - LinkedIn USAID Approach to HIV and Optimized Programming   BIOGRAPHIES:  James Maloney has served as the Deputy Director for the Office of HIV/AIDS (OHA) within the Global Health Bureau at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) since March 2020. This week's episode features Michal Cohen, a psychedelic therapist who helps clients through therapeutic cannabis ceremonies and ketamine therapy. Michal explains how she got into this unique work through trainings in alternative modalities like ganja yoga. She sees immense value in psychedelics for mental health based on her own healing journey.    As a traveling therapist, Mihael has figured out how to guide clients before and after ketamine experiences even when she's abroad long-term. She shares tips for therapist-travelers like vetting accommodations for strong WiFi, researching destinations thoroughly, and staying flexible when plans change. Mihael aims to model a sense of adventure in navigating the inevitability of travel mishaps. She provides an inspiring example of how therapists can blend travel and online work successfully.   Michal grew up in a family that loved to travel! These early travel experiences shaped her to decide to pursue college in CA, even though she grew up in NJ. During college, she traveled to Aix-en-Provence for a semester abroad. Her experience as a student in France was so rewarding, she moved to Italy after graduating and lived there for a year teaching English. She then joined the Peace Corps and went on to serve as a Peace Corps Volunteer in both Madagascar and St. Lucia. It was her experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer that led her to pursue a Master's Degree in Social Work at Columbia University. 12 years ago, Michal decided to make her home in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she offers online therapy and in-person psychedelic cannabis journeys.    Michal loves working as an online therapist because it has allowed her to resume travel as a way of life. This past year, she spent 5 weeks in Mexico and she is returning there for another month in October.    Her favorite travel quote is from the movie The Sheltering Sky: "We're not tourists. We're travelers... Oh. What's the difference?... A tourist is someone who thinks about going home the moment they arrive, Whereas a traveler might not come back at all.   https://michalcohen.squarespace.com/ https://www.instagram.com/the_take_a_trip_therapist/  Episode Key Points:    Michal models flexibility when travel plans change, approaching mishaps with a sense of adventure rather than frustration. Michal entered psychedelic therapy through trainings in alternative modalities seeing immense value from her own mental health journey. As a traveling therapist, Michal meets ketamine clients remotely before and after clinic experiences or guides at-home oral ketamine journeys.
