In this episode of "This Week in Barbecue," we bring you the latest festival recaps and BBQ news. We start with Grill and Chill Fest 2024, a joyful event that included a special donation in honor of Darren W. Carter's work with foster youth and an unexpected gift for Evan Pearl—Rasheed's smoker! Auntie Delilah impressed everyone with a new mac and cheese creation, and live demos from Gerald and Chuck kept the crowd entertained. The night wrapped up with a Waffle House visit, officially a post-event tradition. Next, we cover the Openfire Meat Up 2024 in Hondo, TX, hosted by Al Frugoni. With appearances from BBQ legends like Tuffy Stone and Robert Sierra, the event saw North and South California BBQ teams showing up and showing out. Top 3 honors went to Argentina's team, with People's Choice awarded to Team TFTI. We were also thrilled to meet young talent Rae Barker, 2023 MasterChef Junior Champion. Looking forward, we preview Holy Smokes, coming November 9th, and share news including high-quality cheese options on the way, and Wild Heaven Beer teaming up with Fox Bros for a new Toco Hill location. MM BBQ Company is collaborating with Kunchi for a backyard BBQ academy in Tool, TX, on November 2, and Ziegler BBQ Co. celebrates receiving their business license with Springfield, MO pop-up events soon. Lanes BBQ has signed a lease to open a restaurant in Bethlehem in 2025, while Austin's historic House Park BBQ reopens after a fire four years ago. And finally, mark your calendars for Texas Monthly BBQ Fest on November 2-3 in Lockhart, TX, and the new season of Smoke Sessions!

Our editorial director, Austin L. Ray, lives in Atlanta, which means I’ve had plenty of reasons to spend some time down there over the past few years getting to know the city through his perspective—its food, music and, of course, its beer. Recently, I watched as Austin’s life as a beer drinker in the state of Georgia was dramatically changed with the passage of a new law that enabled breweries to sell their beer directly to drinkers in their own taprooms, over their own bars, and out their own doors. For some breweries, it’s an opportunity for incremental sales. For others, it’s an evolution of their business plan. And for those that are in the process of opening new breweries, it’s a chance to introduce entirely new business models for making and selling beer in the state of Georgia. It’s been about six months since the laws passed, which has given everyone—brewers and drinkers alike—some time to get used to the new normal. And by all accounts, it’s been a pretty exciting time full of new opportunities and some hard lessons. It’s also inspiring new thinking about the future. Austin helped me put together a group of folks, all with a unique perspective on the state of Georgia beer, to talk about their role in the changes, and what they’re going to do next. My guests in this roundtable are: Bob Sandage from Wrecking Bar, a brewpub with its own farm who recently started can sales for the first time ever. Nick Purdy from Wild Heaven Beer, who said he wouldn’t have signed the lease for his expansion without the new laws being signed. Brian Purcell of Three Taverns in Decatur who’s now getting lines down the block for new releases and considering an off-site taproom to build the brand. And most importantly, Nancy Palmer, Executive Director of the Georgia Craft Brewers Guild, who was perhaps most responsible for getting the new legislation enacted on behalf of her constituents, and seems to have not lost a moment working on what’s next. This week, Nancy also won the prestigious F.X. Matt Defense of the Industry Award from the Brewers Association, largely in recognition of those successful efforts. It’s a helluva group to chat about the future of beer with. Listen in.

We took the show on the road this week.  All the way out to Avondale Estates to the home of Wild Heaven Craft Beers.  The folks there were busy, you see. They were brewing a collaboration with a little place from Florida called Cigar City.  So we were able to interview two amazing brewers at once - Wild Heaven's Eric Johnson and Cigar City's Wayne Wambles.  We talk about Eric's non traditional entry into brewing, Wild Heaven's move to canning, and many more things...including what he and Wayne are cooking up! We'll also learn about the success of Emergency Drinking Beer and crack open a special sour that's in the works. Truck and Tap's Beers of the week included Wild Heaven's Autumn Defense, and a surprise from across the pond. Wayne and the Cigar City crew have spent the last several months traveling around the world, collaborating with brewers. One of their collabs happened to be with Ireland's Galway Bay Brewery, home of friend of the show Wil Avery. We sampled the result - Phaethon IPA - and gave Wayne his first taste as well!  In the headlines (sponsored by Your Pie - Perimeter), we talk about Atlanta's newest planned brewpub, headed by former Stone Brewing brewmaster Mitch Steele. Also, Tim talked to Nick Hudson from Albama's Free the Hops, and has an update on the proposed regulations regarding to-go brewery sales.  Don't forget to subscribe to the podcast (and leave a review!).
