Today, we are excited to welcome two of the most influential and high-energy leaders in the meetings and events industry. The dynamic duo, Liz Lathan and Nicole Osibodu are founders of Club Ichi. Individually, they are powerful, and together, they are dominating the market! Stay tuned as we explore their journey, the vision behind Club Ichi, and the incredible work they are doing to shape the future of our industry! Reinventing the Event Industry Liz and Nicole built their careers in experiential marketing, but they were not satisfied with how the industry operated. They saw a need for more community, innovation, and fresh ideas, and instead of waiting for change, they created it themselves. Through bold projects like Secret Family Reunion and Club Ichi, they are reshaping how event professionals connect, learn, and grow. The Journey to Club Ichi Their journey started with Secret Family Reunion in 2019, an experimental networking event where attendees signed up without knowing the destination. The inaugural trip to Tuscany was successful, proving that people craved immersive, meaningful connections beyond standard industry gatherings. By 2026, they plan to host one final edition to push the concept further. Realizing that the industry needed more than just one-off events, they launched Club Ichi in 2023. The goal was to create a thriving, engaged community of B2B event marketers. It began with a 12-hour digital marathon featuring 75 rapid-fire speakers designed to be high-energy and engaging. The event resonated, and Club Ichi quickly grew into a membership-based platform with thousands of subscribers. Building a Sustainable Business Initially, Liz and Nicole worked as consultants, taking on projects and advising clients. But they knew they needed a more structured, scalable business model. So, with the help of a business coach and tax strategist, they refined their focus, making Club Ichi their primary offering. Instead of chasing one-off projects, they built a long-term vision that serves their members and the broader industry. Evolving Club Ichi Club Ichi is evolving into a media-meets-community platform. Liz and Nicole have big plans, including an industry magazine and a reality show that provides a behind-the-scenes look at global events. They aim to create a sustainable, self-funded business that keeps the event industry fresh, innovative, and connected. Innovating and Supporting the Event Industry Liz and Nicole are actively pushing the boundaries of what is possible within the event industry. Through Club Ichi, they have created a dynamic space where B2B event marketers can connect, collaborate, and learn from each other. Their approach is not just about creating events but fostering an ongoing community of professionals who can rely on each other year-round. Beyond that, they aim to provide deeper insights into the industry with plans for a magazine specifically for insiders, featuring in-depth reports and analysis similar to Fast Company or Wired. They are also working on a reality show that will give event professionals a unique lens to see destinations and events, combining the fun of a travel show with event industry insights. The Future of Club Ichi Next year, they hope to grow Club Ichi to 1,000 premium members, expand their team, and build a profitable, long-term business. Their vision is clear: they want to make the event industry even smarter, more creative, and more connected. Liz and Nicole are not just building a business- they are reshaping the industry! Would you like to know how to create a truly unforgettable business experience? Today, Eric explores the power of engagement and explains how to design unique experiences, sharing insights from an inspiring conference and an example of a past touchpoint that left a lasting impact. Stay tuned for valuable strategies to enhance your engagement and create unforgettable experiences. Focusing on What Never Changes Jeff Bezos focuses on what remains constant because Amazon customers always want lower prices and faster delivery. Applying that to the meetings and events industry, Eric identifies two unchanging factors- the need for in-person gatherings, as nothing replaces human connection, and the demand for unique experiences, as people constantly seek unforgettable one-of-a-kind moments. Examples of Unique Experiences Eric has organized events in over 50 countries, creating exceptional experiences that people will never forget. A standout example is the 1998 FIFA World Cup, where he ensured his clients had premium tickets, even amid the chaos of ticket fraud. The highlight was a Three Tenors concert under the Eiffel Tower. Another remarkable event he designed was a unique dining experience across multiple hotel locations. Insights from the MMT Mastermind Conference Eric recently attended his favorite annual conference, the MMT Mastermind Talk, founded by Jason Gaignard. This event is exceptional due to its year-round engagement, ensuring attendees stay connected beyond the conference. Personalized seating based on in-depth intake forms fosters meaningful conversations, while a carefully curated agenda balances inspiring keynotes with interactive sessions. The conference also offers abundant networking opportunities, leaving participants feeling deeply connected, motivated, and eager to return year after year. Key Takeaways for Business Owners Eric highlights the importance of being intentional about designing engagement. By curating thoughtful touchpoints and creating exclusive experiences, businesses can forge deep connections and ensure long-term success. He encourages business owners to break free from the cycle of short-term projects and focus on building sustainable, thriving enterprises. Business Events Industry Aotearoa CEO Lisa Hopkins told Mike Hosking that New Zealand is in a really strong position to do very well. Ronny Coombs, a graduate of George Mason University, is exhibits manager for the American Society of Nephrology (ASN). Her main focus is Kidney Week, a medical conference that attracts 14,000 attendees and, on average, 170 to 200 exhibitors annually. Pandemic Pivot During the Covid shutdown, the ASN didn't cancel its events, just the in-person component. “Doctors still need their education and research was still happening. We had our first virtual event in November of 2020, which was difficult in another way. We were trying to learn how to suddenly become a technology expert and a user experience designer and all these other things that I had never had to do before. We really lucked out. I mean, our event went off really well,” said Coombs. “It was just a whole other different kind of difficult, it was a rough couple of years for everybody in our industry.” Impact of Visa Issues Historically, 40% of Kidney Week attendees are international. At present, that number is in the high 30%. Coombs says this is a result of visa issues. “The wait times right now are prohibitive. People can't get here,” she says. No Replacement for In-Person Events Doctors could attend virtual events during the pandemic and get their certifications. “But we found attendance at the virtual sessions was really low, whereas in person, we have rooms overflowing,” she says. AI is the Future “If you look at where we were as a society 60 years ago versus today and what that will look like over the next 20 or 30 years, the growth that'll happen, I think it's fun to watch, and I am excited to be a part of it,” she says. “I've enjoyed specifically the impact that AI has had on our industry, and me as well.” She uses it to help her with creative blocks. “AI is not going to replace us, but it is a really good space for inspiration, and that's how I typically use it,” she said. Sustainability Coombs witnessed the focus on sustainability slowing during the pandemic, but she is heartened by the recent shift back. “It's super important to me, in both my personal and professional life, that I'm being cognizant of the health of our planet,” she said. The Taylor Swift Effect Coombs has been a Swiftie since she was 15 years old. “I admire her tenacity so much. Her refusal to accept being shut down or being told this is the way that things are going to be. She's such a strong, willful individual, and she just doesn't allow herself to be muted. I've taken that a lot into my life in moments where I may have stayed quiet or allowed someone else to make a decision for me,” she explained. Swift's ability to make her fans special is something Coombs emulates in the events she plans and in her relationships. Importance of Mentors While a student at George Mason, Vicki Johnson of Vicki Johnson & Associates, which has since been acquired by Cypress Planning Group, was a guest speaker. At the end of her talk, Johnson shared her business card to continue the conversation. Coombs took advantage of the offer, and Johnson became her mentor, helping her land her first job in the industry.

Nicola Kastner is one of the rare people who intentionally entered the events industry. The founder of The Event Strategist, a boutique consultancy firm, she helps her clients optimize their event experiences to drive bottom-line results. Before creating The Event Strategist, Kastner was the global vice president of event marketing strategy for SAP, a market leader in enterprise application software. She recently discussed the importance of data in event strategy with Skift Meetings at the Future of the Events Industry 2024 virtual summit. Light Bulb Moment Kastner studied hospitality at university, and when she took a course about incentive travel, a light bulb went off for her. After graduating, she worked on the hotel side at a destination management company. Later, she joined Maritz, where she helped run incentive travel programs for 12 years. Attending a conference, Kastner took a course about event strategy that changed the course of her career. SAP Sapphire Shines When asked what event she has planned that she is most proud of, she says SAP Sapphire 2019 in Orlando. This SAP flagship event included 25,000 attendees, 35 workstreams, and 120 content team members alone. In total, 5,000 employees worked on it. In addition, the conference strategy was led by data. Data Geek According to Kastner, not much can't be figured out with a pivot table. Now, with the addition of AI, her pivot tables are even more in-depth. She is leaning in to understand all the nuances of AI, which she says will change the work. Being so data-driven has been a differentiator in her career, she says. Learning From TED Last year, Kastner applied and paid out of her own pocket to participate in the TED conference in Vancouver. It was worth it, and she was very impressed. Before she even got onsite, she had a feeling of belonging from a WhatsApp group created for first-timers. Big Difference Between the Business of Events and the Events Business She said that event professionals tend to focus on logistics, not the business of events. And those are two distinctly different things.

The Business of Meetings – Episode 196 - Prepare to Unlock a Year of Unparalleled Success! Would you like to learn a magic formula that will ensure you pave the year ahead with success? Eric shares a strategy today that will guarantee you stay on track for prosperity in the coming year. In today's episode, he explains how he organizes his time, sets his priorities, and, most significantly, holds himself accountable for the tasks he undertakes. Join us today to learn about Eric's game-changing formula, designed to sidestep all the pitfalls and pave the way for a truly successful and fulfilling year. Stay tuned for a conversation packed with insights and practical tips! Defining Your Ideal Week To kickstart a successful year, begin by planning your ideal week. You can use tools like Excel or any other planning software to create a one-page overview of your week, from morning routines to business priorities and personal activities. Blocking out dedicated time for everything you have to do will ensure your week is balanced, purposeful, and aligned with your goals. Analyzing Time and Delegating Effectively Next, you need to look at the critical aspect of time management. Eric suggests keeping a detailed record of all your daily activities for a few weeks and categorizing them into “do," "delegate," and "stop" columns. That will help you identify any areas that require improvement, let you delegate tasks efficiently, give you the time to focus on essential activities, and eliminate all the non-productive elements. Setting and Reviewing Goals To avoid setting and forgetting your yearly goals, Eric emphasizes the importance of doing regular reviews. Breaking down your long-term goals into quarterly milestones will ensure you stay aligned with your objectives. Adopting this approach will facilitate your smooth transition from yearly planning to monthly, weekly, and daily planning, making your goals more manageable and achievable. Time Blocking and Priority Reflection It is essential to incorporate your goals into your calendar. All your commitments, whether personal or professional, should be scheduled to reflect your priorities accurately. The strategy of time blocking will ensure that crucial tasks are allocated the necessary attention and do not get lost in the hustle and bustle of your daily activities. Daily Planning Reviewing your schedule for the upcoming week every Sunday will help you to facilitate your daily planning. You can also identify three crucial tasks each evening that will constitute a win for the next day when accomplished. Accountability Eric emphasizes the importance of being accountable and explains that most successful individuals have a coach or an accountability partner. Checking in regularly with an accountability buddy will ensure you get the support and motivation you need to stay on track and achieve your goals. The roadmap to a successful year involves a strategic blend of weekly planning, effective time management, goal setting, time blocking, and daily accountability. Eric's comprehensive approach will lead you to a more purposeful and fulfilling year. The Business of Meetings – Episode 193- Five Steps to Define Your Business Vision with Eric Rozenberg Today, Eric shares a game-changing tool he uses for helping and advising people and coaching business owners. He used the same exercise to help him visualize and map out the future course of his current business. Prepare to be amazed by the incredible results and clarity of direction this process brings you when you put it into practice! From Shock to a Life-Changing Vision In March 2020, during an annual retreat with his EO group, Eric recalls sitting around a campfire and experiencing the initial shock of sports cancellations due to the onset of COVID-19. Interestingly, the theme of the retreat was envisioning your life in 2030. Eric joined the retreat without any expectations and was pleasantly surprised by the life-changing nature of the process he learned there. Since then, he has often returned to the exercise and reflected on what he wrote during the retreat. A Comprehensive Approach to Shaping the Future of Your Business This exercise is a comprehensive yet straightforward approach to envisioning and shaping the future of your life and business. To make the process more practical, we have broken it down into five manageable steps and aimed it toward 2030: Start by identifying and categorizing the different areas of your life into seven different categories, like health, work, finances, fun, family, and personal development. Once you have defined those areas, rate your current standing within each area in terms of where you are today compared with where you would like to be in 2030, and then set goals for 2030. Create a visual representation, like a chart or graph, to further clarify your goals. Dedicate time to outlining three concrete actions you will take for each area within the next 12 months to propel yourself toward your 2030 goals. It could involve anything from lifestyle changes to professional development initiatives. Make a list of questions based on how you want your life to be in 2030. Start by thinking about every area of your life, and then list a conclusive series of questions about all of those areas. The questions should cover where you want to live, your relationship aspirations, career achievements, legacy goals, and anything else you hope for. Take all the time you need to answer these questions. Choose a specific day or date in 2030 and describe it as a day in your life. Take all the time you need to vividly depict that day, incorporating all the details you gathered while answering the previous question. This part of the exercise may only take a few hours, or you may need multiple sessions to complete it. By approaching these five steps systematically, you can transform this seemingly overwhelming exercise into a practical and transformative tool for long-term planning. Remember, the key is to let the process unfold gradually. You may need to revisit the process from time to time, to refine your vision. If you have any questions or need guidance, reach out to Eric. He will provide all the support you need. If you embark on this journey enthusiastically, you will be astounded by all the remarkable results and newfound clarity it brings into your life and business.
