The Architecture and Design Film Festival, or ADFF, brings the stars, producers, and creators to premiere their latest documentaries. ADFF Executive Director Kyle Bergman curates visually wonderful, thought-provoking, and faithfully documented films that capture the brilliance of architects, artists, and significant buildings around the world.  Bergman started the series in New York and now it's in major cities here and abroad, and the pandemic ushered in an online series you can view from home.  Today we talk to the people behind two films from the ADFF.  Adrian Dorschner and Thomas Beyer created the film Robin Hood Gardens, the story of a concrete housing project in London, loved by architecture fans but unloved by residents and critics, including King Charles. Later, you'll learn about Winy Maas, founder of world class architects MVRDV in the film Under Tomorrow's Sky, with director Jan Louter.

Winy Maas is constantly looking towards the future and asking the question - what’s next? The co-founder of MVRDV has ideas that are seemingly larger than life, and push the boundaries of our urban potential. His firm is known for projects like Rotterdam's Markthal, Stairs to Kriterion, or the Taipei Twin Towers. reSITE founder Martin Barry spoke with Winy about his recent projects, including the retrofitted abandoned shopping mall close to the Taiwanese city of Tainan that is part of a wider masterplan to rejuvenate the area that includes a circular food market, with a multipurpose roof, used for growing the produce that will be sold below along with the newly opened Tainan Spring. Also discussed are the projects his think-tank, ‘The Why Factory,’ is involved in, the imaginative Green Dip that rethinks what a “green city” can look like, and the Manifesta 13 Biennale that took place this year in Marseille. He is energetic as he is inspiring. Martin was lucky enough to speak with Winy to discuss that question - what’s next. Design and the City, is a podcast produced by reSITE about the ways we can use design to make cities more livable and lovable. reSITE is a global non-profit and platform connecting people and ideas to improve the urban environment. Hello listeners! We are happy to announce an exciting new season of reSITE’s podcast. It’s great to be back. For those of you who are new to reSITE, we are a global platform and nonprofit connecting people and ideas to improve the urban environment. Martin Barry, reSITE’s founder stared because he wanted to listen closer. He was growing tired of what is known as classic architecture, landscape, or urban design firm. He wanted to see how useful we can be in the making of a city by providing new insight with a startup mentality. What we’ve found is that we can remake the city if we listen to people, help them define the problem—and help them act. Typically, we hold an annual conference and smaller-scale salons to bring various urban actors, who have made an impact on shaping our cities together to hold discussions on how we can co-create cities that better reflect the needs of their inhabitants. Obviously, due to the COVID-19 situation, having our annual flagship event in 2020 was not feasible. To deliver the same kind of content we present at our events, it only made sense to channel our energy into a new medium. We are excited to announce that we’ll be releasing weekly podcast episodes, featuring thoughtful conversations with actors like Vishaan Chakrabarti, founder and creative director of Practice for Architecture and Urbanism, as well as the dean of the College of Environmental Design at UC Berkeley. Filmmaker Gary Hustwit, who’s known for his documentaries like Helvetica, Urbanism, Workplace, and a newly-released short, The Map featuring the redesign of New York City's iconic subway map. We’ll hear from the editor-in-chief of Madame Architect, Julia Gamonlina, who is casting a spotlight on women in architecture at every stage in their careers. Iconic graphic designer, Stefan Sagmeister, joins us for a conversation on his intriguing creative processes and experimentation, to his take on design in our cities. Our first release will feature Dutch architect, co-founder of MVRDV and The Why Factory, Winy Maas, in conversation with reSITE’s founder, Martin Barry. This episode will be available next week! Each architect, urbanist, investor, designer, artist, and other urban actor offers a unique perspective on city-making. We’re glad you’re along for the ride. Steden raken overvol. Professor Winy Maas is an architect, urban planner, landscape architect and one of the three founding partners of globally operating architecture firm MVRDV. We strongly suggest to check out the gallery of their exhilarating projects on their site. Maas lectures and teaches excessively around the world in both academic and professional settings and is also a professor at the Technical University of Delft where he runs The Why Factory: a post-graduate research institute for the future city. He is also the official urban planner of Almere in the Netherlands. Maas points out urbanism is not dead - unlike some critics have earlier maintained - and that there is power and will to make cities better. His company, MVRDV, does not only design buildings but also make urban plans and strategies for bigger companies. He says that dreams are needed to paint the future. In this episode Maas tells us about the importance of research in the work of MVRDV. How do data and creativity interplay? And can urbanism offer help in solving problems such as social injustice and inequality?

Dutch practice MVRDV – of which Maas is the “M” – has an international reputation for its consistently innovative and visually striking architecture. In this talk, founder Winy Maas discusses the practice’s work, focusing on their numerous housing projects, which include the recently completed Markthal in Rotterdam. He also teaches at a number of universities across the world and is director of the Why Factory, a research institute for the future city which he founded in 2008. Maas challenges us to “escape from some of the hermeticism” that our national housing crisis is facing. His attack comes on three fronts: from architecture, to urbanism, to research. A lively and witty speaker, Maas shares entertaining personal stories as he tackles the very serious problem of the future of housing. Photo: Winy Maas © Boudewijn Bollmann
