One of Britain's finest comedy talents from starring in Little Britain with David Walliams to Shooting Stars with Vic Reeves & Bob Mortimer it was our pleasure to welcome Matt Lucas onto the show. What happened to Matt as a child that meant he lost his hair, and did that mean he needed to be funny? How did he start out in comedy as a youngster? Are he and David a more famous duo than Ant & Dec? A Journey Through the Best Bits - Compilation 2
In this episode we welcome Fast Show legend Simon Day to downtown Hammersmith and ask him about his musical passions and the immortal Life Of Rock With Brian Pern. We start with our guest's misspent youth in south-east London, where he frequently saw bands such as Dr. Feelgood and local lads Squeeze and even fronted his own punk combo Simon & the Virgins. We hear about his early days on the standup circuit and his close associations with Vic Reeves, Bob Mortimer and the gang that coalesced around The Fast Show. From there we discuss the genesis of his "prog'n'roll" alter ego Brian Pern and his affectionate lampooning of Peter Gabriel. Clips from a 2003 audio interview with Steely Dan prompt an in-depth conversation about Donald Fagen and the late Walter Becker. During this, Simon tells us how he first fell for the arch duo and we collectively compare notes on some of the group's greatest songs and albums. After a brief mention of featured writer Dorian Lynskey and his new book Everything Must Go, Mark quotes from newly-added library pieces about Mötley Crüe's Nikki Sixx and Beatles hairdresser Leslie Cavendish before Jasper talks us out with his thoughts on M. People's Heather Small and a particularly cantankerous Van Morrison. Many thanks to special guest Simon Day. Pieces discussed: Genesis Doing The Foxtrot, Genesis: No "Pale" Imitation, Seventies prog rockers Genesis are back, but are they welcomed?, All Apologies: Brian Pern, Steely Dan audio, Wayne Robins on the RBP podcast, Pete Seeger, Kendrick Lamar, Why do pop stars fall for conspiracy theories?, Dorian Lynskey on the RBP podcast, Mötley Crüe, Beatles hairdresser Leslie Cavendish, Elvis, The King Remembered — An oral history, Heather Small: Proud, Los Campesinos!, and A duel with Van Morrison.
Shaun and Ben are honoured to be invited into Jim and Nancy's back garden for a chat about their birds, paintings and 1980/90s Coronation Street. "Ribs and Pipes and Penises (oh my!)" Our voyage of re-disc-overy continues, as we tackle a most unusual release; the one that was out in the US before the UK, and that Young Cappsy managed to review before Young Ian for once. We rake over this bitterness as well as embarking on not one, not two, but three commentaries, forgoing the tradition of focusing on one big extra in favour of covering a handful of little bitty ones, the regular features that would otherwise be glossed over. Once again, we ensure that every single aspect of the release is discussed, and along the way we re-evaluate Hattie Hayridge's return to the role of Holly, try to get to the bottom of why the cast commentaries are so difficult to get through, and attempt to comprehensively solve the issues of both war and racism.Show notes Contemporary reviews from Cappsy, Ian and Ian again. Tommy Cannon was one half of the legendary comic double act, Cannon and Ball, until his friend and partner, Bobby Ball's sad death in 2020. Cannon and Ball's prime time Saturday night television series, the Cannon and Ball Show, was one of ITV's most successful series, it ran for twelve years with audiences often as high as twenty million viewers. They even made their own film, The Boys In Blue, in 1982. Tommy and Bobby went on to make their own games show, appeared in the fifth series of I'm a Celebrity, Shooting Stars with Bob Mortimer and Vic Reeves, Last of the Summer Wine, on the Kenny Everett Television Show, and appeared together in a Christmas Special of Lee Mack's BBC comedy, Not Going Out. Tommy has also played a regular character in the ITV soap, Emmerdale. Waffle On about Vic Reeves & Bob Mortimer Hello and welcome to our Christmas edition and its a bumper bonus episode full of fun and Waffles. On this episode Meds and Kell chat away about two of their favourite comedians (and light entertainers) Vic and Bob. They hit our screens back in the late 80's and our two Wafflers were in sixth form at school at the time (and nothing seems to have changed in their childish minds) so it left a lasting impression. Along with the main topic of chat the lads talk about the new Avatar film, some recent movie news and they read an email from our resident man in the asylum Rob K. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all.
Episode Notes We discuss Bob Mortimer's autobiography And Away... as read by Bob Mortimer. Bob Mortimer's life was trundling along happily until suddenly in 2015 he was diagnosed with a heart condition that required immediate surgery and forced him to cancel an upcoming tour. The episode unnerved him, but forced him to reflect on his life so far. This is the framework for his hilarious and moving memoir, And Away… Although his childhood in Middlesbrough was normal on the surface, it was tinged by the loss of his dad, and his own various misadventures (now infamous from his appearances on Would I Lie to You?), from burning down the family home to starting a short-lived punk band called Dog Dirt. As an adult, he trained as a solicitor and moved to London. Though he was doing pretty well (the South London Press once crowned him ‘The Cockroach King' after a successful verdict), a chance encounter in a pub in the 1980s with a young comedian going by the name Vic Reeves set his life on a different track. And now, six years on, the heart condition that once threatened his career has instead led to new success on BBC2's Gone Fishing. Warm, profound, and irrepressibly funny, And Away… is Bob's full life story (with a few lies thrown in for good measure.) Thanks for listening. In this episode, I talk to the wonderful comedian Jason Cook about his comedy career. Beginning his comic journey as part of the sketch group, Soup in 2005, Cook is an award-winning stand-up comedian and writer is based in Tyne and Wear in the North-East of England. Regular comedy club headliner Cook was the co-writer (with Graham Duff) of the BBC TV comedy series Hebburn which featured Chris Ramsey and Vic Reeves (as well as Cook) which ran from 2012 to 2013. More recently, Jason Cook's Comedy Club based in South Shields has played host to popular comedians, with Cook as the regular host. I have seen Cook perform for The Best of The Comedy Store in London in both 2006, for the Big Comedy Gala in Aid of Macmillan Cancer Support at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2011 and again for The Comedy Store in London in 2014. If you're reading this then there's a decent chance that at some point in your childhood or early adulthood you sat down on a Friday night and enjoyed the feast of mechanical violence that was Robot Wars. For older Millennials and young Gen Xers watching this show went hand in hand with being a Red Dwarf fan, not least because the host was, from series 2 onwards, Craig Charles himself. And it's for that reason Robot Wars qualifies for our series of 'Dwarf-adjacent' commentaries as we seize with both hands the opportunity to talk at length about a show very dear to our hearts for... quite a long time.Show notes Christopher Wickham's Ludicrously Niche blog posts on Robot Wars. Robot Wars Series 1 trailer, featuring Norman Lovett. Cheesoid hate self. Cheesoid kill self. Yes, there was a Robot Wars Celebrity Special in which Vic Reeves operated Diotoir, and yes it's on YouTube. Ant from Behemoth has a little strop. That time Jeremy Clarkson was nearly decapitated. Craig's other '90s technology-based game show gets the G&TV treatment. Every Craig Charles outro poem, Part 1. Aaaaaand, here's Part 2.
This week on Creative Cul-de-Sac Shaun revives Colin Falafel, a foul-mouthed character from his XFM days, reads a poem about fear and gives us some vintage dad gags. Then we have the genius that is Jim Moir aka Vic Reeves on the line (this interview was recorded over Zoom due to Covid so it may sound a bit tinny in places). Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to.Joining Tim this time is author, restaurant critic and broadcaster Grace Dent, and they're comparing notes on what they would bring to an Ultimate Christmas Experience including the Have A Cracking Christmas At Woolworths and Christmas '82 - Today's Tesco adverts, Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer pilot The Weekenders, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie pilot The Crystal Cube, John Peel's Festive Fifty, The NME Singles Of The Year 1991, Sky Star Search, the lost Doctor Who panto episode from 1965, The Butthole Surfers appearing on Snub TV, a disastrous interview from Channel 4's Naked City, Chas'n'Dave's Christmas Knees-Up, Chorlton In The Iceworld, Banned From The Pubs by Peter And The Test Tube Babies, Weed Bus by The Stairs, and some unwelcome intrusions from Max Headroom, a shower of 'refreshed' Granada announcers and the Test Card Clown - but no Test Card Girl. Along the way we'll be testing the scientific veracity of Schrodinger's Peel Session, querying whether David Quantick is the real Santa, suffering from Hugh Laurie Seasickness, discovering the exact wrong Pulp song to serenade someone with, and calling for the immediate abolition of Sexually Assertive Butter Men.You can find more editions of Looks Unfamiliar at http://timworthington.org/.

In the second part of Charlie's chat with Vic Reeves, the Jim/Vic/Chin name discussion continues, with both Vic and Charlie adding more names to the pile. Vic describes his first ever comedy gig and the creation of 'Vic Reeves', and he picks more musical favourites, including the classical music equivalent of a Black Sabbath track and the saddest piece of classical music ever written. This episode features extracts from Shostakovich's Symphony No.8, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra with Gianandrea Noseda, available on the London Symphony Orchestra's own label, LSO Live: https://lsolive.lso.co.uk/. We also heard the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Bernard Haitink, performing Nimrod from Elgar's Enigma Variations, and later we heard the LPO, conducted by Jaap van Zweden, with part of the Adagietto from Mahler's Symphony Number 5. Both recordings available to buy at lpo.org.uk. The other clip was from Vaughan Williams' Norfolk Rhapsody No.1, performed by the Halle Orchestra and Sir Mark Elder, taken from an album called English Landscapes which is available at halle.co.uk
Charlie is joined by Vic Reeves AKA Jim Moir AKA Chin, one half of top comedy duo Reeves & Mortimer. They chat about light entertainment, musicals, comedy partnerships, Vic's work as a painter and artist, choosing classical pieces for Reeves & Mortimer on tour, how Vic feels about Bob teaming up with Paul Whitehouse for Gone Fishing and renting classical records from the library! The episode contained an extract of The Dance of the Knights from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, performed by the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Yuri Temirkanov, taken from an album on Signum Records, available to buy at signumrecords.com. We also heard a clip of Mussorgsky's A Night on the Bare Mountain, played by the London Philharmonic Orchestra with Vladimir Jurowski, available at lpo.org.uk. The next piece of music was from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, and that was another recording by the St Petersburg Philharmonic orchestra and Yuri Temirkanov, and the final extract was from Dawn from Benjamin Britten's Four Sea Interludes, performed by the Britten-Pears Orchestra, conducted by Steuart Bedford – and those two are both available at signumrecords.com.

In this week's 70th episode (and the 8th week of 2021's Lockdown) the team manages to hang on for almost two very solid hours indeed of chat, banter and lead-based quasi-entertainment without anyone storming off set at all (although to be fair we have no official weatherman on the team). Making a fast start with an electrifying discussion on how best to wire an shock-giving glow-in-the-dark rat wheel we move seamlessly onto a segment about the fraught subject of mast erection glue strategies in which Warlord Games somewhat unusual Victory at Sea ship-basing conventions are critiqued and compared to wake-less alternatives. The Biblical era then gets a proper look in as we debate whether there are really only 3 different biblical armies, and how easily can they be morphed into one another - and if it's possible to successfully ship the right lead for any or all of them in from the USA post-Brexit. Inevitably both Vic Reeves and Bob Marley both pop up here, as someone mentions the Uratu and Uvavu Dynasties in a segway to much Biblical Dub Reggae goodness. Baccus 6mm (is that a scale...? Ed) American Civil War figures are then drooled over, as we all carefully consider whether The Band's Robbie Robertson was actually the prototype for one of the more hirsute Baccus ACW General figures. Then things go a little off the rails as we all have a long run up at pronouncing "Tlaxcallan" and consider whether buying an Aztec or Inca army is something any wargamer simply needs to do before they die (and whether it's possible to do so for less than the price of a new car). With three purchasers around the microphone we also have an initial shufti at the new "O-Group" rules and cough up some first-look feedback on what seems to be (so far) a promising development in WW2 battallion-level gaming. The episode then moves into full steam ahead mode as Adam yet again returns to the chair in I'm Sorry I Think You're An Arse to put forth his latest theories on why anyone who says "the hobby is greying, we need to do something about it" actually needs to get right back in their box (ideally quite quickly, as otherwise Adam may assist them in an overly proactive manner). Finally we of course round things off with a happy ending in Andy's Quiz as, paying tribute to another podcast's frequent and enthusiastic one-handed embrace of a ruleset-specific onanistic double-entendre, Andy treats us all to a trio of questions on the carefully-enunciated subject of "Pulling Rank". The Wonder Stuff with Miles Hunt in conversation with David Eastaugh The Wonder Stuff released four albums and nearly 20 singles and EPs, enjoying considerable chart and live success in the UK. The band have continued to tour and record since 2000. Largely the vehicle for the songwriting of Miles Hunt, the band split up with a farewell performance as headliners of the 1994 Phoenix Festival, but reformed in 2000 and have toured and recorded since then, with Hunt the sole member of all line-ups. Known for their catchy songs and Hunt's sharp lyrics, the band's sound evolved from guitar pop to include sampling and elements of folk and country. The band - and Hunt in particular — were favourites of the UK music press, and were often associated with fellow Black Country acts Ned's Atomic Dustbin and Pop Will Eat Itself, with whom they have toured throughout their careers. The band scored one UK number 1 single, their release of "Dizzy" with comedian Vic Reeves, 17 top-20 single hits, and three top-10 albums in the UK. The band also toured internationally, and achieved some success in the United States, where they had six songs on the Billboard Alternative Songs Chart.

Jim's passion for art began in childhood, when his parents encourage him to paint, sculpt and enter competitions on the back of cereal boxes, which happily, he won. As a teenager Jim studied at art collage and it was here that he discovered the performance art of Gilbert & George and Joseph Beuys, which inspired his early adventures in comedy and which has continued to inform his writing and performances throughout his career. Recently seen on your TV discussing the history of Video Art, Jim's own art work is exhibited up and down the country. Got them back to school blues? Not us, we love September and we've got some tasty art treats to placate you with this autumn: Lee Krasner at the Barbican, Olafur Eliasson at the Tate Modern, and the BP Portrait Award. We then get into the nitty gritty of who is Super-Curator HUO (Hans Ulrich Obrist) and his insane work ethic and distaste for sleep. We ponder if creatives are now expected to be working to such extreme levels of productivity, and what do we lose because of this? Our September artist focus is the queen of the line, Bridget Riley. Now in her 88th year, this British artist hasn't stopped teasing our optic nerves since the 1960s. Ahead of a major retrospective exhibition coming to the Hayward Gallery this autumn, we've taken a moment to reflect on her epic career. On today's agenda, a great conversation about Dreams and Details as authored by Jim Snabe, chairman of Siemens, a Googley cloudy newspaper courtesy of The Telegraph and 'street' retail via Ralph Lauren...and something for Brexit fans. Plus the added bonus of a smidgeon of British humor. If it flummoxes you then check out what Americans thought of our erstwhile comedians Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer.
Bob Mortimer is a comedian best known for his work with his comedy partner Vic Reeves. For 30 years, he and Vic have appeared in numerous TV series together, including Vic Reeves’ Big Night Out, Shooting Stars and The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer. Bob first saw Vic performing in a south London pub: Vic was wearing a Bryan Ferry mask while trying to tap dance with wooden planks strapped to his feet. Bob found this hugely entertaining, and began to take part in Vic’s shows. Bob was born in 1959 in Middlesbrough, the youngest of four boys. His father died in a car crash when he was seven and Bob says he became his mother’s little helper – although he also set fire to their house after playing with fireworks. As a teenager he dreamed of a career as a footballer, but he ended up studying law at university, and worked as a solicitor in south London. In 2015 Bob underwent triple heart bypass surgery. After this – in a rare diversion from working with Vic – he accepted an invitation from fellow comedian Paul Whitehouse to get out of the house and go fishing, which led to a successful TV series, Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing. Adam talks with British comedian Bob Mortimer.Hi. Adam Buxton here with some notes about Bob and this episode. For nearly 30 years Bob and his comedy partner Jim Moir (aka Vic Reeves) have stuck doggedly to what makes them laugh whether mainstream audiences get it or not, with shows like ‘The Smell Of Reeves & Mortimer', ‘Bang Bang It's Reeves & Mortimer', ‘Catterick', and ‘House Of Fools' as well as the occasional reboots of the massively popular panel show ‘Shooting Stars' and the show that introduced them to the world in 1990, ‘Big Night Out'. Consistently and inexhaustibly joyful, energetic and absurd, their parade of characters, silly voices, home made props and a sensibility that is often close to avant garde performance art, has made them two of the best loved and most influential comedians the UK has ever produced. When not working with Jim, Bob enjoys watching football. He's an avid supporter of Middlesbrough FC and is currently the co host along with comedy writer Andy Dawson of the vaguely football themed podcast, ‘Athletico Mince'. It's up with the funniest stuff Bob's ever done.My conversation with Bob, took place in the London office of his agent and for a while we had to battle with some quite loud talkers in the corridor outside doing agent business (I was too weedy to ask them to be quiet), but that calmed down after a little while and we rambled about getting older, the TV shows that Bob enjoys, his new fishing show with old friend and fellow comedian Paul Whitehouse, music, petty crime and now and then we looked back over a few Vic & Bob moments from the last 30 years. It was a fun conversation that often revealed a softer and more gentle side to Bob than people might expect. It's a good bet that he would feel quite deeply nauseated by that last sentence and perhaps a few before too. Thanks to Séamus Murphy-Mitchell for production support and Matt Lamont for additional editing. Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer are back on TV with Vic and Bob's Big Night Out. Three decades after starting out they discuss their surreal and anarchic style of comedy. The legendary Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu returns with a new album Eternamente - her first studio album in six years. She discusses her affinity with the role of Tosca, and why she feels like the "black sheep" of the opera world. Bristol Old Vic is the longest continuously running theatre in the UK, and celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2016, which means it might just be old enough to house a ghost or two. Game of Thrones star Patrick Malahide and members of the theatre staff tell us of their spooky encounters there.
http://thecomedycast.com/ Hello and welcome back to The Comedy Cast; today you’ll be hearing from English stand-up comedian Andy Storey. We get straight in the Edinburgh Fringe stuff and speak about the show he's putting on with Maddie Campion, Epoch. Andy's the first 'clean comedian' we've had on so I was really interested to get to ask him some questions about clean comedy and how he sees it as being more difficult to be both funny and clean and how he enjoys the challenge of it. We chat about how recently he was compared to Vic Reeves and Alan Bennett and how comparisons like that make him feel. We speak about what he's learned over the years from putting on shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. We talk then about the kinds of existential questions that come to comedians when they're performing; do the audience care; why am I bearing my life and soul to people I don't know who I'll never see again, deep things like that. We chat then for a minute about the the depths of the subconscious and how you can't even trust your own mind as it's always playing tricks. And it's always good to keep grounded by reminding yourself that everything is meaningless really. We talk about why he loves gigging so much, doing 5-nights-a-week as much as he can, honing his material at Open Mic nights and New Material nights around London. We speak about that god-awful phrase 'the comedy voice' and how Andy has learned over the years to be more like himself on stage. He sees less of a difference between who he is on stage and who he is in real life. We talk for a bit then about how Andy likes to challenge himself by constantly testing out new material, knowing that he cannot rely on trusted material he has to push his stage presence, his charisma and get his new ideas across well to the audience to get them laughing. We natter too about the importance of language in joke, how particular words at particular times can completely change how an audience laughs, he speak about using the phrase 'hipster hairdressers' instead of 'hair salon' and how the reaction of the audience was totally different. We speak about why some people need a push to get into things and how it took him so long to get into comedy even though he'd always wanted to do it.
Comedian and painter Jim Moir (aka Vic Reeves) meets designer Steven Thomas, whose work includes the lavish interiors for the renowned Biba fashion superstore in London in the early 1970s - acclaimed by one newspaper as 'the most beautiful shop in the world'. His other clients include Paul McCartney, who commissioned Steven and his design partner Tim Whitmore to create his London headquarters. Steven remembers the freedom he was given to create a retail world unlike any other, and reflects on having the confidence to say yes to creative opportunities - regardless of experience. He also outlines his belief that the pressure of a deadline and some moments of zen-like calm in the midst of a busy office can lead to the best ideas. Producer Clare Walker Original music by Brian Eno.
Actor and director Tony Pitts meets comedian and painter Jim Moir, also known as Vic Reeves.

RHLSTP #107: Hitchhiking with Rose and Fred - Vic Reeves. Last week's jokes about the consequences of Brexit seem to have fallen on stony ground with the revelation that the pro-Remain audience has been executed by Farage's goons, but the show must go on, even if some of the audience were foolish enough to give up their tickets to watch the football (ha!), so they missed the force of nature that is Vic Reeves. There's a danger the whole podcast might just be a chat about Britain's best and worst tourist attractions, but luckily things move on to Luis Bunuel, where comedy meets art, what a baboon sounds like when it ejaculates, whether Sue Lawley liked Vic and a potential return of the Big Night Out! Also Terry Scott lookalikes, ghostly orbs, eating humous and the Moir family history. Plus what it's like to be a magnet for serial killers. And you can find out what the score of the England/Iceland game was at half time too. It was 1-2. Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the comedian Jim Moir, best known by the name of his alter ego Vic Reeves. Jim was born in Leeds but soon moved to Darlington with his family. He attended the local school and left with one O level in Art. He fulfilled the expectations of his school by getting a job in a factory, completing his apprenticeship and working there for four years. However, he was bored so he moved to London with three friends. After trying a few different jobs he began running club nights - with music, acts and entertainment. He would hire a venue and the bands and he would be the compere. Jim decided to take on the persona of Vic Reeves as it gave him an excuse to act up. A comedy night came up and instead of booking three comedians, he decided to do the whole night himself. Vic Reeves' Big Night Out was born. After teaming up with Bob Mortimer, a solicitor who had been in the audience of one of his shows, the show went from strength to strength. It was a huge success and TV rights were fought over by the BBC and Channel 4. Since then, he has appeared on both channels with a variety of programmes including The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer, Shooting Stars and Randall And Hopkirk (Deceased). The programmes have won BAFTA Awards for Originality and Best Live Performance plus British Comedy Awards.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams Book: Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K Jerome Luxury: Potato seeds
