Jim Allen, vice chairman of Robert W. Baird & Co., is on this week's Access Louisville podcast.Baird is the sponsor of the podcast, but Allen was on the show with LBF Editor-in-Chief Shea Van Hoy to talk about local business as well as other topics. At the top of the program, Allen tells us about progress since the merger between Hilliard Lyons and Baird. The merger of the two legacy financial firms (Hilliard Lyons dates back to 1854 in Louisville and Baird 1919 in Milwaukee) was announced in fall 2018 and completed in April 2019. The companies celebrated the five year anniversary of that merger last year and it's been going well since, he said."What has really made it go is the cultural compatibility between the organizations," Allen said. The business has really changed over the 44 years that he's been in it, he explained. Back at the time he began, Hilliard Lyons was much more of a brokerage and transaction business. Today it's more about wealth planning, which he says is a market necessity particularly as wealth is being transferred across generations. "Things are going really well [for the business] despite market volatility," he said. Allen also spoke about Downtown Louisville on the show. He's worked in Downtown Louisville throughout his career and long advocated for it, including when the company re-invested in the Louisville headquarters in the 500W Jefferson building. Baird invested more than $20 million into relocating and renovating its office spaces within the top five floors of the tower. The company began moving into the space, totaling roughly 100,000 square feet, in early summer 2021.In spite of calls by some to move to the suburbs, he wanted the company to stay in the heart of the city."We need a strong urban core, a strong business center to really thrive as a city and as a region. And, of course, as we all know Louisville is a key economic driver for the commonwealth of Kentucky. Having a vibrant downtown is really, really essential." A part of the company's commitment to downtown includes underwriting the taxable subordinate debt for the KFC Yum Center, he said. Back before the arena opened in 2010, Hilliard Lyons financed that debt, which covered the suite level of the arena and was not eligible for tax-free financing, he noted. Goldman Sachs was the lead underwriter for the Yum Center and did not want to underwrite that portion."And so we did it," he said. "that's a very big source of pride for us ... as we all know the Yum Center has been transformational for Downtown Louisville." The Yum Center's 15th anniversary is on October 10, 2025.You can hear more from Allen in the podcast, which you can listen to in the player above or on popular podcast services including Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Links to the show on both of those platforms are at the top of the story. Follow us on popular podcast services to never miss an episode.Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Stitcher The day is finally here: Top Golf is open. After years of anticipation, the national golf concept is taking bay reservations now. But it was “softly” open last week, accepting walkups. Our reporter Eleanor Tolbert got to tour the facility before the crowds.Tolbert explains that she has visited Top Golf locations in Nashville and Cincinnati, but Louisville's differentiates itself. It seems larger, she told us, with three stories and encompassing 67,000 square feet, with 102 bays, three full-service bars, dining areas, private event space and moreBut Louisville's location has something else that sets it apart from the others. It's one of just two Top Golf locations to feature a different menu from the others, along with Las Vegas. Our unique menu? Bourbon, of course. The bourbon bar includes nine different bourbon brands and specialty cocktails.Beyond Top Golf's bourbon offerings, we also discuss new places to try bourbon across the city, including a new spot from Heaven Hill in the Yum Center and Bardstown Bourbon Co. opening a new spot on Main Street this summer.Forecastle is “taking a break” in 2023, so what will it look like when it comes back? The Forecastle Festival, one of Louisville's crown jewels, has been a staple of the city for 20 years. Organizers cancelled the festival last week, saying “there are some things that we want to work on and improve for the future, so we're going to take some time to strategize and determine the best path forward for the festival."We brainstorm what a future of the festival might look like. Will it go back to its indie rock roots or lean into the EDM/Gen Z crowd? Access Louisville is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. It's co-hosted by David A. What's Next for Downtown Louisville?

In Conversation

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 7, 2020 51:48

If you've ever looked at historical photos of downtown Louisville, you might have been struck by how busy and bustling it looked. Loads of people were out and about going to work, wearing fancy outfits to the theater, and shopping at department stores. But mid-century “urban renewal” efforts changed downtown, putting parking lots and high rises where multi-use buildings and pedestrian-friendly sidewalks used to be. Since then, efforts to revitalize downtown have come and gone (remember the Galleria?), but in the last few years, our city center seemed to gain some momentum. The Yum Center brought people downtown for games and concerts, Whiskey Row reopened with restaurants and shops, and some distilleries opened their doors to teach tourists where the good stuff comes from. Enter 2020. The coronavirus pandemic shuttered downtown, closing courts and government offices, and sending workers from their high rise cubicles to their dining room tables. Then protests drew opportunistic vandals who broke storefront windows. Buildings are still boarded up. Bars are closed by order of the governor, and restaurants are still operating at limited capacity in the interest of public health. What does this all mean for the urban center of Louisville? Will the downtown those workers and sports fans and diners and tourists eventually (hopefully?) go back to look anything like the one they left behind? This Friday on “In Conversation,” we're talking about the challenges this year has brought to downtown Louisville, and what the future might hold.

Will Ojanen @WillsWorldMN - (Podcast) The final weekend? Hold on there, there's more ACC basketball on the way but that final weekend is coming soon. You can almost hear the countdown clock ticking away. I've got good news and bad news. The good news is that the ACC and NCAA Tournaments are coming at us fast. The bad news is that the true end of the season is only a week away after this, the penultimate weekend. That means there's just two weeks of basketball left for some teams. So if you're a fan of one of those teams enjoy it while it lasts. There's always next year, right? In my short form podcast I'll get you up to speed on how teams stack up in the ACC standings. There are some very interesting finishes. Shocking and pleasant surprises would sum it all up. Creme Of The Crop - The Q View This weekend action begins on Saturday with Pitt at NC State. The Wolfpack absolutely need a win here to just sneak into the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers have been cold but will the trip down south warm them up? Find out who I pick. Countdown Florida State heads to Clemson. Is Leonard Hamilton an ACC COY candidate? The Seminoles and Tigers should keep it close to make it interesting. Syracuse is off the bubble but they can make some hay with the tournament. The Orange host North Carolina and the Tar Heels will continue to struggle. The countdown is on for Syracuse getting into post-season play. Notre Dame faces off with Wake Forest after the Demon Deacons knocked off Duke. Is this a let-down game? The Irish can help make their post-season a bit more interesting with a win here and some fireworks in the conference tournament. ACC Nation Radio - Listen Now! Will's Weekend Preview Podcast Duke, oh Duke. What's going on with this team especially on the road? The Blue Devils head to Virginia where the Cavaliers have suddenly found their offense. They'll need a stellar performance to knock off Duke. Join me on HotMic as I provide commentary on this game. Listen for details. Miami and Georgia Tech put two question marks together. The answer? This could be a close game all the way but I'll pick the Yellow Jackets to close it out with a win. Virginia Tech has been on a slow, cold roll and will have to deal with Louisville at the Yum Center. It will be tough weekend for the Hokies.
