THIS WEEK - Happy Darwin Day! Evo and SI open this week's podcast with birthday greetings for Charles Darwin. The herd celebrates this event with a discussion of "Seeing and Believing," Jerry Coyne's review of books by Kenneth Miller and Karl Giberson. The question that Coyne and the herd address is whether science and religion are compatible. Evo thinks the answer to this question may differ for scientists and non-scientists, and Chappy thinks that science should be considered as a method of inquiry, or a way of thinking and learning, rather than a body of knowledge about particular phenomena. SI opens this segment by noting another anniversary that occurred recently, then leads the herd in a discussion of Giberson's "argument from convenience" (many thanks to Jerry Coyne for coining that term) for retaining religious beliefs. After chewing on this idea for awhile, the herd discusses Michael Brooks' proposition that people are born with a predisposition to believe in the supernatural. Evo offers some good reasons for agreeing with the proposition, but OG, ever the skeptic, wants more evidence before she'll accept it. After OG reveals the latest poll results, the herd discusses the Freedom from Religion Foundation's latest billboard campaign. Are the billboards part of an atheist meme? SI wraps up the evening with an interesting observation about President Barack Obama's second swearing-in ceremony. THIS WEEK - REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS**some conditions apply SI and OG introduce tonight's topic, one of the Bush Administration's final gifts to the American public: a new set of U.S. Department of Health and Humans Services regulations addressing issues of freedom of conscience for health care professionals. These regulations, which apply to all American health care facilities that receive federal funds, greatly expand the rights of employees to decline participation in the provision of medical goods and services for reasons of personal conscience. Chappy questions whether some of these provisions will endanger people who may not receive essential, critical care. SI discusses the Church Amendments that pre-existed the current regulations and ponders whether the new rules are necessary, redundant or dangerously expansive. The discussion continues, as OG, SI and Chappy parse the possible meanings of the term "conscience laws." OG and SI also discuss why this issue is about the reproductive rights of all people, not just women. SI grows increasingly irritated throughout the discussion and questions the validity of tying funding for institutions to the ways in which individuals within institutions exercise their legal rights. He calms down later, as he notes why President Bush may not have had the last word on the matter after all. Find out the latest poll results then listen as OG reveals why she was pissed off all day. Hint: follow the link to Godtube - if you dare. THIS WEEK -"...so help me god!" In keeping with the Inaugural festivities today, the Herd discusses the recent Complaint for an injunction to prevent the government from requiring president Obama to end his oath of office with words acknowledging the Christian god. Did the Plaintiffs have standing to complain? Is the Inauguration a government function? The Herd continues to discuss the ruling of the Court in the Newdow case, and the ramifications for the inaugural proceedings. SI analogizes the ceremony with that of a wedding. Does that analogy apply? You decide. SI reminds the Herd about, and they marvel at, the recently published report of the House Committee investigating the abuses of the Bush Administration. It's a long report. Philly then vents against Atheism's inability to develop a pleasing persona. THIS WEEK - Religion in the Workplace The latest trend in the corporate work environment seems to be pandering to religion. The Chaplain's not happy about this. In fact, she's downright frosty. Isn't there a better way to foster a nurturing work environment than inserting religion? OG wonders what the ramifications of this new found attraction to workplace religion will have with "family values" being pushed by the usual suspects. Is this just another insidious, back door attempt to discriminate? Will religion ironically destroy diversity in the workplace, in the guise of promoting it? Dear Chappy has a brilliant answer for another unsuspecting casualty in the War on Christmas. Also, poll results of the latest poll, and a little science to astound and amaze you. THIS WEEK - Good News & More Philly starts the discussion by pointing out a novel argument for removing the phrase, "under God," from the Pledge of Allegiance. The herd discusses this and some other rationales until OG reminds everyone of the best reason of all for removing the phrase. Segueing smoothly from the Pledge of Allegiance to a discussion of Good News clubs, the herd is frustrated that churches are using elementary schools to advertise their programs. Should non-school groups be allowed to advertise in schools? Moving on to more good news, the herd notes that the state of Kentucky has enlisted God into the Kentucky Dept. of Homeland Security. SI enlightens everyone about some of the legal issues involved in both of these matters. Philly digs down deep into the mailbag and pulls out a Dear Chappy letter that she is uniquely qualified to answer. After that discussion winds down, the herd considers a letter that prompts them to consider what documents, if any, a newly-elected atheist should use to take the oath of office. OG shares the latest poll results, then closes with her thoughts about a judicial decision that the state of Florida got right. That really is good news. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [12:56]: excerpt from "One of Many" Bridge and Closing Music [38:18] excerpt from "Jesus Loves Me feat. THIS WEEK - The Herd Hijacks the Atheist Bus Ex is pissed off. So is Philly, but for a different reason. Find out what's got their dander up as the herd dissects the American Humanist Association's current bus ad. Is the campaign a stupid idea, a good idea poorly executed, or something else? After chewing on this issue for awhile, the herd considers whether Christmas is a Christian holiday or a secular one, and whether such a distinction matters. The herd introduces a new feature: Dear Chappy. SI and Chappy share some recently received emails and Chappy dispenses wise (or wise ass) words of counsel to desperate correspondents. Not surprisingly, other members of the herd add their advice too. There is plenty of wisdom to go around. Stick around and find out the results from the last two polls. OG gathers the data and explains what it all means. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [17:40]: excerpt from "The Atheist's Hymn" Bridge and Closing Music [44:30] excerpt from "So, Thanks" by Tom Smith Closing Music [1:10:11] excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie except as noted)
THIS WEEK - The Herd Shoots the Shit This week's sitting members of the Herd find themselves on the same side as a cult, in a recent case involving the Summum. Philly feels some cults have a point, at least when they're on the same side as Pastafarians. Chappy explains where all those granite Ten Commandments came from that seem to be prevalent in public parks around the nation. SI gets pissed off about a recent initiative passed by the voters of Arkansas. The conversation drifts to a discussion about a recent teen declared to be the next Buddha. Philly wants to know the test for Buddhahood. SI believes he qualifies for Buddhahood (sorry, no pictures), but thinks something smells. The logical progression of the conversation then naturally turns to guns. Apparently, the recent election has brought out the gun nuts. The herd chews on some nuts, then turns on Sarah Palin, then goes back to the guns. The Herd finishes up with a basic rag session on theists, especially the one's who show up in the blogosphere. Outtakes. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [24.00]: excerpt from "Middle Earth Shortened" Bridge and Closing Music [51:35: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie where noted)
THIS WEEK - The Post-Election Show: Is It Time to Pop the Champagne Just in case you missed last week’s headlines, the herd announces the election of a new American president. SI asks if Barack Obama’s election will have positive ramifications for freethinkers, humanists and atheists. OG and Chappy speak their minds and SI pulls their ideas together, then ponders whether the election results will change the role of the Religious Right in American politics. How do you vote? Do you use a touch screen, a slot machine, or a paper ballot? OG, SI and Chappy compare and contrast the methods used in various states and discuss whether vote counting is an additive or subtractive process. Why is OG embarrassed? Find out as the herd discusses Prop 8. Fortunately, she gets over her embarrassment in time to reveal the poll results. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [19:46]: excerpt from "Middle Earth" Bridge Music [36:15]: excerpt from "Highway 45" Bridge and Closing Music [1:00:13]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie where noted)
THIS WEEK - The Christian Identity Why do Christians usually identify themselves as Christians first and any other identity second? Do atheists do the same thing? Are atheists less likely to talk about their non-belief due to social pressures? The Herd weighs in on whether they define themselves as atheists first and rate other aspects as secondary. Five chaplains in Virginia resign their positions after a policy requiring non-sectarian prayers is enacted by Governor Tim Kaine. Christians immediately cry, "Persecution!" But is this really so? Chappy explains the issue in more detail and as SI dives into legalese. Are Christians entitled to the privilege of having their religion supported because they're in the majority? We continue the discussion about the chaplains and how this new policy may keep them from subtle proselytizing. Philly reaches the heart of the matter by asking why we have state-supported chaplains in the first place. We have the poll results from last week and news about "God's team." And SI smells something unpleasant. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [15:16]: excerpt from "Crouching Christian, Hidden Atheist" Bridge Music [31:57]: excerpt from "One of Many" Bridge and Closing Music [46:20]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie where noted)
THIS WEEK - Should Atheists Tread Lightly on Theist Toes? A subcommittee of the Herd considers Philly’s query whether atheists should avoid language that provokes the ire of theists. Should we take pains to avoid provocation? SI wonders if we should be responsible for theists' insecurity. Chappy seems to attract more ire than the other two, and tells you why. Philly tells us about the recent advertising showing up on the sides of London buses as a potential form of provocation against theists. Are atheists damned if they do and damned if they don't? Are they damned, period? The most recent poll results (Where ARE the other members of the Herd?) and some baseball talk. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [11:41]: excerpt from "Child of the 80s" Bridge Music [25:55]: excerpt from "Heathen Boogie" Bridge and Closing Music [33:20]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie where noted)
THIS WEEK - Court Cases, Religion, and Reproductive Rights for Men The Herd gets right down to business discussing the court case of Lucero v. Texas where the foreman read a verse from the Bible and appears to have changed the jury's decision. Chappy is disappointed, but with whom? And are SI and OG too comfortable in their own opinions? Legal discussions aside, some court cases are too comedic to be taken seriously. Is it possible to sue a god? And can there be a lawsuit that's completely frivolous? What happens when men sue for reproductive rights? And should OG just lighten up? We find out the scientific reason behind the cancellation of the Jewel of Medina by Random House and what we really do with those votes you cast in the poll. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [16:47]: excerpt from "One of Many" Bridge Music [38:20]: excerpt from "Disco Is Not Dead" Bridge and Closing Music [40:59]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie where noted)
THIS WEEK - Should Atheist Issues Take a Backseat? What's happened to half of The Herd? Are they deep undercover somewhere? Choose your Conspiracy in the poll. With all of the issues going on in the news about the US election and economic crisis, should atheist issues be put on the back burner? Philly and OG weigh in on why the religious crazies haven't been making news and Chappy reminds us why activism is still important. Who's afraid of the big, bad Atheist? Why, Elizabeth Dole is. The Herd weighs in on her smear campaign against Kay Hagan and why she's been able to get away with it so far. After spending most of the podcast on US-centric news The Herd turns its attention to the UK. Are they completely capitulating to religious wackos? And are their religious crazies worse than ours or do we both have something to worry about? Find out the poll results from last week and what's been going on with one of our listeners from down under. Also, has Chappy mastered Evo Mathematics? THIS WEEK - Eric Kampmann on The Jewel of Medina This week we have a web-exclusive interview with Eric Kampmann of Beaufort Books - the company that showed the heart we all wish Random House had. For background, listen to our discussion on how Random House caved into the fear of Islamic reprisal, canceling publication of The Jewel of Medina by Sherry Jones in Podcast #26: Muslims, Publishers, and Free Speech. We were all hoping someone would come to the rescue and Beaufort, led by Kampmann, did just that. Ex asks what Eric thought upon hearing of the Random House disgrace. What we get is some real inside-baseball on the corporate politics that may have been behind their decision, as Eric has been in the business many years and knows some of principals involved. He goes on to explain how Beaufort made the decision to get involved. We talk a little bit about what the book is about and why the book may be a "seller", even though Sherry Jones is a first-time author. Find out if Beaufort has any plans in place in the event of terrorism. Eric talks about the support he has received from retailers. We get a peek inside the publishing industry and the likelihood of self-censorship in the future. Finally, the positive changes that have taken place within the publishing industry - something every free-thinker should be heartened by. Eric gives better than an iTunes 5 Star Review to Another Goddamned Podcast and gets a prize. You can probably guess what it is. (00:00) We come back from the interview and the Herd and discuss it a little further. Ex wonders which of us is very likely to buy the book. Is a historical fiction about a religion going to be of interest to people like us? Is it bad if there were no real Islamic threats that Random House thought it was OK to use claims of threats as their reason for not publishing? (35:49) It's puzzle time. Do any of our listeners know how to interpret Faithfreeists and Christians? Then, see what you can do with some biblical names. Ex gives the results of our "God Bless America" poll. Evo has two quizzes this week. One is just for the Herd, but you can play along! It gets better. The one for you is sweet. But click off of the podcast immediately after the quiz or listen to Evo sing. You've been warned. (51:50) UPDATE: The European publisher of The Jewel of Medina had his home firebombed in an apparent terrorist attack. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [34:25]: excerpt from "One of Many" Bridge Music [50:45]: excerpt from "Swing to the Left" Bridge and Closing Music [1:04:54]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie where noted)
THIS WEEK - It's the Faith-Based Economy, Stupid Evo plays host this week, and everyone's invited to his anti-Republican party. He kicks off the festivities by explaining the origins of the "free market" in America, and we discuss why it's built into the nation's psyche. Does that still make sense today? Or is free-market worship just a "faith" position. Ex thinks the "American Dream" is a nightmare perpetrated by the GOP. How did we get into the economic mess we're in? Surprise: It wasn't just the Republicans. Incompetence and greed may not know party lines, but certainly the drive to deregulate has come from the Right, allegedly in defense of "free markets" - that don't even exist. Aren't all economic philosophies somewhat "faith-based"? After all, there's no scientific evidence that any system would work under all circumstances. However, there's plenty of evidence that the system now in place doesn't work. (Hint: Peek in your wallet.) In the beginning of the last segment, Evo asked if a defense of "free markets" could be supported Constitutionally. Do people confuse our individual rights with the rights of corporations? Philly goes back to that question and shares (at no cost!) his insights. The government bails out businesses, but not individuals; that's "corporate socialism," of course. While the Herd isn't happy with the deregulators, are some of us right to label their ideas as "faith"? What's the difference between faith and opinion, anyway? Chappy says that with supportable opinions, we can rationally attack a notion — but not with faith. OG does the impossible when she makes Ex reexamine his position. Ex grabs back the mike and takes us through puzzles, polls, and quizzes. Even as a rational thinker, you may find that you are CONfounded, but you should have no trouble CONfining your CONfusion to this podcast only! Remember, Ex is a bit of a CONman. By the way, you won't want to miss SI do his short stand-up comedy routine. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [13:18]: excerpt from "Heathen Boogie" Bridge Music [29:38]: excerpt from "Latin Down the Hatches" Bridge Music [41:54]: excerpt from "Highway 45" Bridge and Closing Music [59:06]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie where noted)
THIS WEEK - 9/11 and Its Religious Ramifications So the U.S. is attacked and the very first thing Congress does is sing "God Bless America." Great for freethinkers, eh? Ex wonders whether fundy political clout increased after 9/11. Did lots of people believe that our country was attacked specifically because we're a "Christian" nation? Chappy thinks that for many conservative Jesoids, Christianity is conflated with Americanism. Philly says the ever-growing atheist community should thank George Bush. Is he right? Evo sees an ugly face peeking out of an open window. Relax, though -- it's probably not you. In response, SI teaches the Herd about the "buttfer" test. Ex asks: Is it possible to imagine a world free of religion? Philly can imagine something, but it involves flatulation and butterflies. OG, channeling evangelicals, compares rejecting religion to rejecting Americanism. Are moderate-to-liberal theists partially responsible for the acts of 9/11? Or does the morality of a society shape its religion rather than vice versa? And what does a Chinese menu have to do with anything? Which came first: the disgusting chicken or the rotten egg? Are nationalism and religion related? Who's persecuting whom? More important question: Can people ever stop playing "the Game"? And why does everybody hate atheists -- particularly Chappy? Another Goddamned Puzzle is solved with the help of some fictional characters, but Ex imagines having to console some puzzlers about his con job for next week. Talk about wack-a-doo ideas: Amazingly, 51% of the world's population believes that Evo exists. Whoever "Evo" is, he (or she) poses a science question about climate change. Why not give it a try while you're still comfortable? Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [13:10]: excerpt from "Waltz of the Dead" Bridge Music [29:05]: excerpt from "Child of the 80s" Bridge Music [47:17]: excerpt from "Jesus Loves Me feat. Satan" Bridge and Closing Music [1:03:57]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie where noted)
THIS WEEK - Funny, She Doesn't Look Woo-ish Sarah Palin likes shooting defenseless animals. Let's see if she can handle the Herd! Does experience matter? If so, how? Philly and Evo argue that Palin used her little bit of experience in a very authoritarian way, but Ex calls "bullshit" on them. Who's right? Meanwhile SI doesn't think 120,000 total votes and being governor for a year and a half is much experience. Ex sees an insidious strategy that the GOP may be using. OG would rather talk about issues than experience, and the Herd agrees. Obviously, that's a signal for a segue to a conversation about Palin's religiosity. How might her love of Jesus inform her decisions? What will be its effects on separation of church & state? Is (are?) the Assemblies of God scary? (Do moose shit in the woods while they're hiding from Sarah Palin?) Chappy and Evo sound very, very afraid. Believe it or not, Ex tries to assuage their fears. How fucking reassuring do you think that is? Yikes! Can Democrats attack Palin on her fundy ideas? Or have they painted themselves into a church corner? Philly would like to see the Dems go straight for her craziness, but understands it ain't happening. Instead, he offers a few politically feasible tactics. Can Obama/Biden just practice what they preach and let the public judge the difference between their particular god and Palin's? And do atheists have to bite the Christianized bullet? (Will it bleed if we do so?) Three Goddamned Solvers cracked last week's puzzle, one with the help of his ... well, we can't give everything away in these notes. Hint: zombies were not involved. Want to be deliriously happy for the rest of your life? The results of our poll may tell you how! And Evo wonders: Where are the science lovers in our audience? (Possible answer: getting happy?) Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [17:37]: excerpt from "One of Many" Bridge Music [32:32]: excerpt from "Crouching Christian Hidden Atheist" Bridge Music [48:37]: excerpt from "Swing to the Left" Bridge and Closing Music [1:02:31]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie where noted)
THIS WEEK - Atheist Woo? Do non-theists believe their own sets of weird things? The Herd says "yes," but you don't have to take our word on faith; just listen. First of all: Does Evil exist? Chappy falls into Ex's evil trap. SI says it's just an adjective, but Evo isn't willing to go even that far. Wasn't Hitler evil? Find out why Evo would answer "no". How do conspiracy theories fit into our question? Are some conspiracies worth being agnostic about, while others are clearly fantastic? We learn from Chappy why people might either believe in a god, or some other form of woo - but not both. What is it about the human mind that makes even us rationalists seem to need some sort of woo? Ex tries to put words in SI's mouth, but SI spits them up and demands a break. SI believes that we're hardwired to believe something. Was he the subject of an anal probe? Ex hears many faith-based statements - and not necessarily the ones that mention "faith" or "God" - at the political conventions. Chappy sees that kind of "faith" as just wanting to be with the winning team. One of us fulminates about the irrationality of sports fans. [Hint: It's not Philly.] Does Jesus have anything on Roger Maris? Ex reveals that we had no correct answers to Another Goddamned Puzzle. Evo says there was a similarly empty email bag on the Science Quiz. Even the poll results were closer than normal. SI thanks god for sunshine, while Evo thanks a listener for a plug. Only one of them gets a "you're welcome," though. Can you guess which one it is? Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [12:45]: excerpt from "Child of the 80's" Bridge Music [28:31]: excerpt from "Middle Earth Shortened" Bridge Music [44:21]: excerpt from "Highway 45" Bridge and Closing Music [59:04]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie where noted)
THIS WEEK - An Unusually Happy Episode Ex surprises The Herd by asking if we're happy. Find out exactly why Chappy is. What do we make of various studies "showing" a greater happiness for woo-ists than others? The first one we look at claims higher levels of mental disorder for women who have eased up on their lifelong religious practice. Is there gender stereotyping involved? How much of church-going is about socializing? Oh, and Philly: We love you man! Another study. Is it science? And, more importantly, what does it prove? Philly knows lots of things besides religion that make people "happy." Evo wonders if Christians are like people with mental handicaps. We briefly pay homage to various cheery animals. Chappy, quoting Paul, tells us why slaves might be happy. But what about us atheists? Does skepticism make people somewhat uncomfortable? Is OG floating in limbo, or does she have a purpose driven life? What's the 4-Point Plan for Happiness - and why is it brought to us by a scientist? Are any of our brave listeners willing to volunteer to be part of SI's social network? OG practically steps on other members of The Herd in her excitement to answer a question: Did she ever get self-esteem from god? Ummmm ... does anyone? In any religion? Philly thinks "meaning" a meaningless word. Which brings us to: Would atheist weddings and baby-naming ceremonies make us happy? Not Ex - until SI ropes him back into the Herd. No, it's not poetry; it's the puzzler, huh? We announce Another Goddamned Correct Solution, but not from a listener. The Herd and our audience, champions of free speech, nevertheless do find some books offensive! Which ones? Hint: Voters loved Johnny Evo but hated Dinesh D'Souza. Speaking of Evo, he clears up some fuck-ups from the past, and then goes on to award two of our listeners for getting last weeks' science quiz right. Bridge Music [12:57]: excerpt from "Jesus Loves Me feat. Satan" Bridge Music [27:18]: excerpt from "Highway 45" Bridge Music [40:35]: excerpt from "The Atheist's Hymn" Bridge Music [55:39]: excerpt from "Latin Down the Hatches" Closing Music [1:11:52]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie) (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie where noted)
THIS WEEK - "Creation Care," Ethanol ... and Evo Screws Up We have a special guest this week: Shrike, president of his local Audubon Society chapter and an active environmentalist for more than 30 years. The Herd asks him to tell us about the new green movement among evangelical Christians. Is the fundies' approach to saving the planet different from the traditional one? Do Christian bears shit in the woods? Chew on this phrase: Creation Care. Will the environmental movement be hijacked by a religious agenda? Shrike is willing to use all the help he can get. Or is he? Ex, fretting about religionists' involvement, poses a challenge. Would Shrike be willing to start his Audubon Society meetings with a prayer? The lifetime environmentalist doesn't have to think twice about his answer, but can you predict what it is? We wonder: If evangelicals are around, won't they ... duh ... evangelize? Philly worries what Shrike and others would be called if they walked away. SI finds a Creation Care website that looks mighty religious to him. After our disclaimer about Democrat bashing, we bash Obama. On ethanol. Shrike is not happy with this bogus response to the energy/environmental crisis. He likes his corn flakes and hopes a Democratic Congress will resolve this. The cynical Herd doubts that it will happen. Another Goddamned Puzzle, Poll and Quiz. Is Evo actually bright enough to be testing our listeners? We give a marginal thumbs-up to Atheist Nexus. Our conclusion: Join, but don't expect any miracles! However, do feel free to become a member of our group there. Not surprisingly, it's called ... ta-da ... "Another Goddamned Podcast." Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [12:57]: excerpt from "One of Many" Bridge Music [25:00]: excerpt from "Swing to the Left" Bridge Music [39:24]: excerpt from "Heathen Boogie" Closing Music [51:50]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie where noted)
THIS WEEK - Muslims, Publishers, and Free Speech Islam sucks, OK? We examine Random House's decision to quash the publication of Sherry Jones's book The Jewel of Medina. Why? The publisher "learned" that the novel might infuriate Muslims. Who's Denise Spellberg, and what was she thinking when she fomented Islamic hysteria? Doesn't the Random House decision just encourage threats of violence? The Herd wonders if there's any book that would deserve banning. It's clear that Random House cancelled publication for one reason only: Can you say "scared shitless," boys and girls? What legal rights does Jones have? We look a little harder at Spellberg and what she had to gain by worrying the editors. Why is it OK to anger other groups, but not Muslims? Philly wants to open up a new front in the so-called "War on Terror." We explore Muslims' responses to Western secular culture - even when they're living in that culture. Evo tells us what Sherry Jones' next move should be. We ask: What might Random House do if it was suddenly besieged by infuriated emails and calls from people who love our freedoms. (That's a hint, listeners.) Or should freethinkers simply threaten violence, just as Muslims would? Question: Is the Bush foreign policy indirectly responsible for the cancelling of Jones's book? Why does Denise Spellberg get us pissed off at liberals? What exactly are our government's Constitutional responsiblities to religion? Briefly, it's "Be Kind to Christians" Week. But that doesn't last long! Do we reveal the correct answer to last weeks' puzzle? Dawk! You'll have to finish listening to find out if we're lying or not. A scrupulous puzzle-solver actually turns down his AGP secret decoder ring. And don't you just live for our poll results? Finally, Evo asks: Where the fuck are our science-savvy listeners? THIS WEEK - Angry Atheists We welcome Chappy back, and then immediately attack her. Why? Well, she's been on the warpath lately and we'd like to know what she's so angry about. It turns out that OG and SI are mad about the very same thing. The other three of us may be even more furious, but for different reasons. Philly and Evo articulate theirs. Listeners are urged to form a circle and join hands. Ex, great sage that he is, tells us all why we're really pissed off, and we see that there are "three flavors of our discontent." OK, so how do we deal with our anger? Does our rage make us "strike out" at religionists, both in the blogosphere and in real life? Urging calm, some members of the Herd argue that we should remain logical. Philly makes an insightful point about theist arguments, which leads us to discuss the role of education in deconversion. Higher education is our continued focus, and we find out how it freed OG. Can it work that way on others? Ex remains rankled. Does religion require ignorance of worldly knowledge? Evo points out that there's probably nothing more worldly for a theist to do than ... what? Another Goddamned Puzzle is solved, but Venjanz needs a shave. Sean sends an audio file, complete with gratuituous wisecracks. In our new poser: No man is an island, but someone gets stuck on one. Evo offers a little Science Quiz, for which fantastic prizes will be awarded! (Well, our definition of "fantastic" might be a little different than yours.) Philly explains how Scientology is like the Mafia. Finally, we award a mini-medal of honor - to one of our own listeners. Find out what she did to earn it. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [13:45]: excerpt from "Highway 45" Bridge Music [28:42]: excerpt from "Jesus Loves Me feat. Satan" Bridge Music [45:35]: excerpt from "Heathen Boogie" Closing Music [1:00:53]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie where noted)
THIS WEEK - The Pompous-Driven Political Campaign Ex doesn't need any prodding from a man down-under to get pissed off about McCain and Obama making their first joint appearance in a CHURCH! Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? Rick Warren, of The Purpose-Driven Life fame, claims both candidates as friends, and will soon host a pious party from his pulpit. OG informs us about Warren's book, which we urge listeners not to rush out and buy. The Herd, as usual, fulminates. Is this unsubdued enough for you, Sean? Our AGP Fundogelical Correspondent, OG, gives us some deep background on the fleecing of America. Philly reminds us that it's all about power. SI asks: Isn't that why government and religion go so easily hand-in-hand? We all see a number of infuriating church/state conflicts at Warren's Saddleback Church Political Extravaganza. So what can freethinkers do about all of this besides our usual bitching and belly-aching. Evo tells about an excellent idea he tried, but did it work? If you're a proper cynic, you'll guess the answer. Now what? SI wants to use this podcast as a tool. Shall we add it to our atheistic Swiss Army knives? Ex opens a pet shop, and Philly finds a way to compare Saddleback Church to NAMBLA and the American Nazi Party. OG asks the question: Isn't showing up at a Christian Church, and only a Christian Church, a de facto religious test? Doesn't that fly in the face of the Constitution's Article VI? Maybe, but who's gonna sue? Another Goddamned Puzzle. Man, you folks are smart (which our scientific poll later confirms). But you're funny, too! Some listeners work together to give last week's solution, and Yunshui adds a special surprise of his own. Evo awards the 3rd AGP Medal of Honor; find out who got it and why. SI tips everyone off to a good series of articles on evolution. Finally, why we love Darwin - but hate being called "Darwinists." Opening Music [00:37]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [16:19]: excerpt from "Jesus Loves Me feat. Satan" Bridge Music [33:49]: excerpt from "Middle Earth" Bridge Music [50:01]: excerpt from "Latin Down the Hatches" Closing Music [1:14:40]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie where noted)
THIS WEEK - McCain, Obama, Anyone Else? Oh Well, There's Always Beer! Lately, we've been avoiding having full-blown discussions about politics. But this week we can't resist looking at a few issues related to the '08 elections in the U.S. Ex wants to know if McCain has anything to offer the American people. You might find some of the answers surprising! Would a President McCain still pander to a religious base that didn't support him in the election? Then: Given that we all agree Obama would be marginally better than McCain, why do we tend to give him such a hard time? Can you say "pissed off," boys and girls? Obama's brand: Change. But it now comes with a secret ingredient: No-change-o. Does anyone buy that "change" line anymore? Was his FISA vote a deal-breaker for you? It was for some of the Herd. We discuss why that single vote was so important to us as atheists, freethinkers, and lovers of the Constitution. Some of us theorize about what was behind it, but what the fuck do we know? We look at the American political system and examine why it's so difficult for third-party candidates to get elected. Lots of voters seem to want choices besides the Demopublicans, yet it's hard to find a viable standard-bearer for the great idea of ... what? Can any of us suggest a political position that a potentially successful third party might embrace? Philly explains how he thinks a new party could get off the ground. Ex, though, seems fixated on dogcatchers. Another Goddamned Puzzle and Another Goddamned Poll and Another Goddamned Ten Minutes of Your Life spent listening to this drivel. In our free-for-all ranting segment, our resident artist is annoyed at the reactions to The New Yorker's Obama cover and the resulting controversy about visual satire. We see this as yet another problem fed by the Left as well as the Right. Evo tells about a college instructor who lost his job because he told his class that the Adam-and-Eve story was a fable. Somehow this leads us back to a brief discussion of the tragic and infuriating case of Madeline Neumann. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [13:54]: excerpt from "One of Many" Bridge Music [29:22]: excerpt from "Swing to the Left" Bridge Music [44:56]: excerpt from "Disco is Not Dead" Closing Music [1:08:11]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie where noted)
THIS WEEK - For Elitists Only Ex pulls teeth (especially with SI) to get the entire Herd to agree that we are elitists. After brow-beaten SI gives in, we discuss what, exactly, an elitist is. Is it all about greater intellect and finer taste? And what's the difference between elitism and snobbishness? As atheists, are we automatically unholier than thou? Evo says, "if you believe in supernatural causations...I'm superior". And the members of our snooty Herd all agree on that one. Someone forgets to kill the sound during our first break, and we find out which one of us is the most elitist. How do we manifest our elitism in our non-Internet lives? Evo is a smarty-pants. SI is more cagey, except maybe with his wife! Ex thinks he's smarter than the average bear — and more valuable. Why is it a bad thing in our culture to be better at something? Would most Americans rather vote for a person who is a reflection of them rather than someone who is clearly "better" than they are? Once again, the mic runs during our break, and listeners are treated to a short Philly Rant(tm). Ex wants to know what there is in our elitism that makes us angry at various things in society. Not surprisingly, we're mostly pissed off at the anti-intellectual culture of the United States. Our engineer decided that our arrogance is too delicious to resist, so we have yet another candid break. Evo claims that more damage was done to our society by Bush's response to 9/11 than by the attacks. Ex, always fascinated by whether like-types can spot each other, asks if we can automatically recognize other elitists. We give the answer to Another Goddamned Puzzle from last week and announce the winners of our AGP Secret Decoder Ring. There were two - neither of whom was named Venjanz. Find out why poor Yunshui may not be happy about that. Poll results revealed - and yet ANOTHER reason you may not want Evo singing in your neighborhood. Is it elitist to mention a few items in the news? We think not. THIS WEEK - Are We Lacking?, Faithfreeists, and Not Being Liberal Philly is on a mission. He wants to stop us from being defined by a negative. The one definition commonly attributed to atheists is that we have a "lack of belief," and that really sticks in his craw. So what's a better definition? The Herd weighs in and then we hear about a new word created by The Exterminator. Maybe next we'll create a special word for the 21% of atheists in a recent poll who said they believe in a higher power! Theatheist? Feel free to play along! What's behind the resistance we've all seen in the past whenever a new term is proffered? Do all atheists stand united on all positions? Of course not. While it's generally assumed that atheists are Liberals, each of us has some issues where he or she diverges from the left-wing norm. Even within our self-complimentary Herd, we have disagreements. We give examples and argue amongst ourselves. So what else is new? We continue continue disagreeing with other's dismissals of leftist "dogma". However, one of us brings up a silly liberal idea that we all agree is dumb. Maybe you can guess who that sweet person is before you hear the idea presented. For extra credit, can you predict the idea? More polls, more puzzles. Venjanz has become a monster. Can any of you match his greatness? Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [17:25]: excerpt from "Heathen Boogie" Bridge Music [39:46]: excerpt from "Swing to the Left" Bridge Music [57:30]: excerpt from "Waltz of the Dead" Closing Music [1:20:02]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie where noted)
THIS WEEK - Crabs, Stars, and Richard Dawkins ... Plus EVO SINGS! The Herd "celebrates" its 20th podcast by talking a little more personally. First we look at how we manifest our atheism in our non-Internet lives. Find out which members of the Herd are surrounded by theists and how we deal with it. What does Philly do when Mrs. Chief dips into the woo? Evo can't resist bringing in a story about woo and evolution. More about spouses. Then we examine whether skeptics can instantly identify like minds. If so, how does our A-dar work? In living our atheist lives, do any of us have a mission? What oral (or other) arguments could be made to us that would sway us to believe in a god? Philly says: "You can't argue something into existence." So what evidence would a theist have to present? Ex takes a break to consult the stars. "God" is the first explanation for a strange event to many people. But, obviously, not for the Herd. In fact, it would be the absolute last. OG would need a trip to heaven supported by scientific observations. What would Richard Dawkins need? More importantly, what would he need to get back to writing about science? We discuss the value of his writing about atheism. Ex and Evo aren't pleased that he's changed his focus. The rest of the Herd chimes in on Dawkins, supporting his work as Atheist-In-Chief. Ex gives Venjanz another chance. Which of us hates sad-eyed fictional bunnies? And stick around for the out-takes: Another Goddamned Dittty. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [18:57]: excerpt from "One of Many" Bridge Music [41:30]: excerpt from "Highway 45" Bridge Music [59:18]: excerpt from "The Atheist's Hymn" Closing Music [1:14:52]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie where noted)
THIS WEEK - Shrinks, Oaths, and Stupid Editing at The NY Times Joined by regular pinch-hitter Chappy, the Herd follows up on last weeks' Evolutionary Psychology conversation by discussing psychology of the non-evolutionary kind. We wonder: Is psychoanalysis somewhat "faith-based"? Why isn't god-belief considered delusional? Or would atheism be seen as a problem requiring therapy? The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) wants to take on the government in an attempt to preclude it from essentially forcing new citizens to swear "so help me god". Wouldn't a freethinking new American be loath to complain about that oath the ceremony? Some of us think we need to concentrate on removing god from ALL public affirmations. The Herd agrees: Let's do away with government oaths to god. But how do we accomplish that? Evo has a faith-based all-encompassing solution! Chappy argues - one step at a time! But this is all about Evo's reality. We swear! Late-breaking news: If Obama is elected, he'll be America's first black President! Is that too obvious for us to mention? Well, you may be right. After all, we're not The New York Times? Ex offers another goddamned puzzle: Can Venjanz keep his perfect record going? Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [16:38]: excerpt from "Heathen Boogie" by Rachel Murie Bridge Music [33:02]: excerpt from "Star Spangled Banner" Bridge Music [46:17]: excerpt from "Latin Down the Hatches" by Rachel Murie Closing Music [59:17]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" by Rachel Murie (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie where noted)
THIS WEEK - Evolutionary Psychology (Maybe), You Wanna Bet?, and Killing Peter Rabbit ... plus Another Goddamned Puzzle Man: the questioning animal. Is there a psychologist in the house? No? Good. It's safe for the Herd to weigh in on evolutionary psychology. While none of us know much about the field, it doesn't stop us from discussing it and its relationship to gods and woo. Who’s flawed, wooists or those who use reason? Or are neither flawed? Is there a specific "god gene"? More on evolutionary psychology. OG is presented with a nightmare "desert island scenario," and turns down the opportunity of a lifetime. Is there an evolutionary advantage to reason? How about woo? Pascal's wager, and woo, and god. If you accept the bet without really believing - is that good enough for god? We try to figure out: How in the hell do we get in to heaven? Seriously, though, do some Christians make believe that they've made themselves believe? The new atheist video game - murder Abraham, Jesus, and Mohammed. Is that any fun? Remember: We have a several hardcore gamers in our ranks. Results of Another Goddamned Puzzle from Podcast 16, and a new challenge. Can Venjanz do it again? Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [14:40]: excerpt from "Jesus Loves Me feat. Satan" Bridge Music [30:26]: excerpt from "The Atheist's Hymn" Bridge Music [48:17]: excerpt from "Swing to the Left" Closing Music [1:08:24]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie)
THIS WEEK - Theists & Science, Churches & Charities ... and a Lost "Sole" Evo has a question: Do theists, particularly those on Boards of Education, knowingly use their influence to undermine the teaching of ALL science, not just evolutionary biology? Do they consciously or unconsciously work against the development of a scientific worldview because they realize that it has a tendency to lead to religious decay? Philly thinks Evo may be lost in Conspiracy Land. Others in the Herd support the idea, minus any conspiracy. OG tells us about anti-intellectualism in religious schools. Ex relates a different educational experience. Philly thinks there's so much to teach, so little time. What’s your take? Big surprise! Our federal tax money is being given to churches for charitable work. The Herd, predictably, is pretty united against this, and we spell out why. What really pisses all of us off -- not just Ex -- is that the White House encourages churches to "game the system". But the Herd, being what it is, can't agree for long. Is it possible that churches actually do use federal funding for charitable work? Some of us say no; others of us think that's an unsupported position. Join a prayer circle and save a woman’s deteriorating family from an ATHEIST ATTACK!!!!!!!!!!!! Bridge Music [14:04]: excerpt from "Heathen Boogie" Bridge Music [30:15]: excerpt from "Disco is Not Dead" Bridge Music [48:39]: excerpt from "Arkansas Traveler" Bridge Music [1:02:52]: excerpt from "Latin Down the Hatches" Closing Music [1:11:30]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie)
THIS WEEK - Evangelicals for Israel, the Rapture, and a Big Ape Pastor John Hagee and his ilk - why would the State of Israel in general, or Jews specifically, think this blowhard is their friend? We look at the many things he (and other fundamentalist Christians) do and say. They're repulsive, right? So is gaining their financial and moral support worthwhile for Israelis when it means having to stomach their hateful rhetoric. Can the meddling of the American evangelicals cause bad things to happen in the Middle East? Our biblical authority, OG, shows us how the "end times" crowd has the scriptures wrong. What is the "rapture" all about and who thought it up? Does the human brain have the ability to justify bogus "truths" in religion -- and in politics? How can a leader strongly influence beliefs in others, even without the ability to back his claims up intellectually? In this regard, we compare our current political players to religious leaders. No surprise: The Herd gets pissed off again. Ex tells a story about sticking his foot into his atheistic mouth at a party. Now that he finds himself back among friends, he asks: Can an intelligent person be religious? Philly wonders which came first, the religious chicken or the stupid egg? How do people who had the misfortune of being born into a highly charged religious environment fit into this picture? Evo hypothesizes that compartmentalizing may be a factor in the religiousness/dumbth phenomenon. Ex disagrees. Philly can't take his eyes off the 1,000 lb. gorilla sitting in the corner. Evo rethinks his hypothesis about compartmentalization and re-defines what he means by it. SI kicks in with what the Herd agrees to be a nice analogy. We review the interesting results of our latest "scientific" poll. Ex unveils a new feature of Another Goddamned Podcast. Have fun - win prizes (sort of). Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [16:59]: excerpt from "Crouching Christian Hidden Atheist" Bridge Music [31:00]: excerpt from "Swing to the Left" Bridge Music [47:13]: excerpt from "Waltz of the Dead" Closing Music [59:29]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie)
THIS WEEK - Presidents, Lies, Voters ... and the Boy Scouts What's the responsibility of the President in accurately educating the public on matters of government policy? Or on anything, for that matter? SI states the case for a teacher-prez, but Ex takes a somewhat controversial position. The rest of the Herd including special guest Chappy, weigh in. How vigilant is the voting public about our elected officials telling us the truth? But what can the electorate do? Chappy is optimistic about the possibilities, but SI punctures her balloon. We also look at the compliant press. One of us thinks voters should have to take a test before casting their ballots. Is there an elitist in the house? Find out who he or she is. (If you're a regular listener, try to guess beforehand.) Do Americans lack intellectual curiosity and necessary basic knowledge? Most of the Herd argues that you can’t force the electorate to make informed decisions. OG is annoyed at The Boy Scouts of America Centennial Commemorative Coin Act. Does she have Scout-envy, or is there something insidious at work in the proposed legislation? We briefly discuss the history of B.S.A.'s B.S. Evo ably sums up the Herd's position, and, for once, Ex and SI refrain from embellishing. But someone tries to earn the sound-effects merit badge. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [13:32]: excerpt from "Highway 45" Bridge Music [29:00]: excerpt from "One of Many" Bridge Music [51:17]: excerpt from "Middle Earth" Closing Music [1:05:43]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie)
THIS WEEK - Rationalism and Atheism, Cynics and Skeptics ... and a Jesus Cap SI, thinking about conspiracy theories, brings up the topic of atheism being more about rational thinking than being "against" any particular god. He wonders why we're unable to get that message across to theists. The Herd challenges SI's notion. Can some people be atheists, dislike religion, and yet not necessarily use reason in other parts of their lives? Evo asks, how did atheism start for each of us - as a dismissal of god or as a rational process. We discuss the search for evidentiary enlightenment, regardless whether it's focused on science, politics, or philosophy, and the tendency towards an atheistic world view. What parts do cynicism and skepticism play in the process? (And is there a difference between cynics and skeptics?) Is your atheism part of "who you are"? Do you take any religious statement as an "in your face" attack that demands a response? Ex tells about a Christian who stole some artwork. Why do we think it was a Christian? You'll have to listen and find out! Poll results and a bow to Robert G. Ingersoll. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [16:48]: excerpt from "Latin Down the Hatches" Bridge Music [32:47]: excerpt from "Arkansas Traveler" Bridge Music [54:52]: excerpt from "Swing to the Left" Closing Music [1:02:26]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie)
THIS WEEK - National Day of Prayer, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, Madeline Neumann, and Our AGP Medal of Honor OG finds an atheist editorial in the Faith section of the Kansas City Star. It calls for an interesting response to The National Day of Prayer. Ex has problems with it, then has problems with Evo’s response, then has problems... The Herd talks a little bit about the Ben Stein movie Expelled. Is it worth getting upset about? Maybe not, since Ex hasn’t been pissed off all week over it. Anyway, the Herd has a little fun at the expense of pathetic movies. Ex and OG discuss the whole foofaraw (whatever that means). SI weighs in as if he’s an attorney or something. During a break, Philly gets us all going on the Madeline Neumann case, in which a 11-year-old girl died for no reason, other than that her parents opted entirely for prayer in lieu of science. The Herd is thrilled about the indictment of the parents for 2nd degree homicide. Will the charges stick? Ex cheers us up as the Herd honors another atheist with our Medal of Honor. Find out who the winner is. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [17:45]: excerpt from "Heathen Boogie" Bridge Music [38:45]: excerpt from "Disco is Not Dead" Bridge Music [55:05]: excerpt from "Jesus Loves Me feat. Satan" Closing Music [1:02:23]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie)
THIS WEEK - The Chaplain on Deconversion ... and W on "Deal or No Deal" The Herd interrogates fellow member of the Atheosphere - The Chaplain. This is our offering to any aspiring atheist who is somewhat skittish about the process of freeing himself or herself from superstition. We delve into the deconversion of the Chaplain and are surprised to find out what evolution had to do with it. Chappy tells us about her religious background and how she began moving away from it. "Put a nickel on the drum, save another drunken bum"... None of the Herd knows much about the Salvation Army and Chappy enlightens us. John Wilkes Booth wasn't the only holy horror with that surname back in 1865. Ex wants to know if Chappy is now trying to "save" religious folks. Why all the great Christian authors couldn't persuade the Chaplain to avoid atheism. Which atheist screeds had an impact on her. Making a clean break - denial, grief, anger, and finally acceptance. Moving into the Atheosphere and dealing with family and friends. Hiding the atheistic porn. Finally, what the fuck is "W" doing appearing on game shows and why do we need to know which celebrities support each of the candidates? Who is a bigger turn-off, Barbara Streisand or Oprah Winfrey? Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [15:17]: excerpt from "Crouching Christian Hidden Atheist" Bridge Music [31:30]: excerpt from "Jesus Loves Me feat. Satan" Bridge Music [49:39]: excerpt from "One of Many" Closing Music [1:13:27]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie)
THIS WEEK - Abortions, Faith-Based Initiatives, and Debating the Debate As surprising as listeners may find this, Ex is pissed off! He tears into the recent Compassion Forum (renaming it the Compulsion Forum). Although he has several beefs (or is it "beeves"?) he and Philly zero in on the candidates' responses to questions on abortion. Obama says that abortion is a "moral decision" and a "wrenching choice." Are there any actual moral issues involved in abortions early in the pregnancy, or is the word "moral" just Obama's way of pandering to the religious? Faith-based initiatives and Establishment. We all pretty much agree with James Madison, even though he was not an atheist blogger. Attacks on Obama: why has he shown an utter inability to handle them better? Does he appear as un-Presidential to you as he does to Ex? What should he be saying in his own defense? Evo wonders whether Obama modifies his debating style because of perceived racial prejudices that he faces. But OG counters that it's really Hillary who has a tougher bias to overcome. The boys gang up on OG, badgering her to accept there is no anti-feminist sentiment in the electorate. Then, Philly tells the herd why he would accept an invitation to a religious forum if he were a candidate. Normally, this spot in the podcast would be devoted to out-takes. In this podcast, however, it's just more in-put. During a long break, the Herd can't seem to abort its discussion. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [14:34]: excerpt from "One of Many" Bridge Music [31:01]: excerpt from "Disco is Not Dead" Bridge Music [49:51]: excerpt from "Child of the 80s" Bridge Music [1:04:01]: excerpt from "Arkansas Traveler" Closing Music [1:10:16]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie)
THIS WEEK - Free Speech, Fred Phelps, Sneaky OG ... and the AGP Medal of Honor The Westboro Baptist Church may have to close up shop. Hooray! Or ... wait a minute. Is free speech inviolable? The Herd takes SI to task for his published position on the Fred Phelps case. More on free speech and Nazis, and Fred Phelps. Well, speech may be free -- but does it have to go on for so long? The discussion finally draws to a close. The Herd's original vision for this podcast, in Philly's words, was a Heretic Happy Hour. Frequently, we find one another so stimulating and/or annoying that we can't resist shooting the shit even when we're not bantering about the week's agreed-upon topics. OG, our sneaky engineer and editor, often records these encounters. Here's a segment of one such conversation. Introducing the AGP Medal of Honor, which is awarded to its first recipient. This week's poll results are not really a surprise. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [15:33]: excerpt from "Swing to the Left" Bridge Music [31:27]: excerpt from "The Atheist's Hymn" Bridge Music [39:49]: excerpt from "Middle Earth" Bridge Music [1:04:01]: excerpt from "Arkansas Traveler" Closing Music [1:06:53]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie)
THIS WEEK - Atheists, Agnostics, Antitheists ... and Superstitious "Rationalists"! Listener Venjanz asks the Herd to explain what we mean when we say "atheist," "agnostic," or "antitheist." We begin a discussion of these terms, not in reference to their dictionary definitions, but in reference to what they mean to us when we use them in our writing and our conversation. We briefly examine the concept of evidence. The discussion continues. Ex wonders if we shouldn't call ourselves "a-fideists." SI claims that "god" is a term for the entire supernatural realm. But OG points out that everyone, atheists included, may have some superstitious beliefs. More on atheists and superstititon. Philly thinks it's possible to be an atheist and still not be a skeptic. Do any of us carry a rabbit's foot, or wear a lucky shirt? Evo is skeptical about that. Somehow the conversation comes around to Mac vs. PC, vanilla vs. chocolate, and rationalizations in general. Knock on wood, it stays pretty lively. Poll results. Ex fulminates about the poll-takers and accuses them of irrational rationalizing. Evo disagrees. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [16:03]: excerpt from "Heathen Boogie" Bridge Music [30:27]: excerpt from "Latin Down the Hatches" Bridge Music [47:36]: excerpt from "Crouching Christian Hidden Atheist" Closing Music [57:08]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie)
THIS WEEK - Why We Don't Believe in Any Gods, Is America a Christian Nation?, Atheist Colors ... and OG on the Accordion! A listener has posed the question: "How come you guys don't believe in any gods?" The Herd discusses whether or not to respond. SI gets called to the phone. Is America a Christian nation? Most of us think not. We also discuss whether America might be a Jewish nation, or a Muslim nation, or a Wiccan nation. Nope, none of those, either. Ex is pissed off that atheists seem to have chosen red as their color; he thinks it makes us look too "gullible." Philly explains the color wheel. We all weigh in on our favorite colors, then discuss songs with colors in their titles. Evo sings his rendition of "Red Roses for a Blue Lady." And OG gives an amazing performance of "Purple Haze" - on the accordion! THIS WEEK - Spiritual Advisers, Evangelical Consultants, and Easy Cheesy Chili Dip There are three candidates remaining in the Presidential field and (surprise, surprise) they are all down on their knees with Jesus. Obama’s pastor (and member of his campaign team) Jeremiah Wright says America is Another Goddamned Country. Hillary has a Christian on her team. And not just any Christian - an Evangelical. But when it comes to sounding like a Republican fundy, she does pretty well using her own words. McCain’s "spiritual adviser" thinks "Christian America" is locked into a death battle with the "false religion" of Islam. Pass the Parsley. Poll results: the worst person in history. (No, it's not Jesus or Moses.) And then Ex is pissed off again - about angels and cream cheese! The Herd helps him shmear it on. Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [16:09]: excerpt from "Latin Down the Hatches" Bridge Music [30:04]: excerpt from "One of Many" Closing Music [39:01]: excerpt from "As Jazzy As I Get" (All music: copyright 2008 by Rachel Murie)
THIS WEEK - Our "Cause," The Coming Election, TV Woo, and Superheroes Ex is pissed off yet again. But only at himself, not at listener Yinyang, who wants to know what our atheist "cause" might be. Not surprisingly, we can’t agree. Yinny’s question has a Part 2. What’s "bad for the cause" - and who are the perps? We attempt an answer, but spiral once again into politics. Will we all get behind the Science Debate? And how can the nation's freethinkers coalesce into a political movement? Enonomi, another goddamned listener, asks if we enjoy "woo" television shows and movies. If so, do we feel guilty about that? Are these programs and films just great fun, or do they somehow perpetuate superstition? The Herd, going around in circles as it often does, winds up back at the podcast's first topic. St. Patrick’s Day falls during Holy Week this year. OH NO! We toast one another with green beer while throwing this non-controversy right in the Papal face. But then we find a topic we really disagree on. Lifeguard wants to be Aquaman. Which superheroes would the other Herd members choose? And who can kick whose ass? THIS WEEK - Fuck, Charles Barkley, and Immunity for Missouri Pharmacies. Plus – What Person Could History Have Done Without? FUCK! Shocked? Offended? You’re probably not an atheist. The Herd’s hypothesis: If you’re a freethinker, "fuck," "shit," "cunt," and all those other four-letter goodies are less likely to affect you than to rile up all those other assholes out there. Fake Christians. That’s how Sir Charles Barkley referred to hypocrites who claim the love of Jesus but can’t seem to extend it to homosexuals and women seeking an abortion. Is Barkley "governor material?" Despite a ban on political talk this week, a debate on the qualifications for political office breaks out. The Herd wonders if Ex is on acid, as he serenades them. And Babs gets a message ... from God. Uh-oh. Here comes Missouri House Bill 1625, exempting pharmacies from legal responsibility if they choose not to fulfill legitimate prescriptions for RU486 and Plan B. Can it be proven that this bill is based on religious belief? We think so but, unfortunately, we’re not on the Supreme Court. The Herd name their least favorite historical characters. We want to hear from you on this. Do you agree with our picks, or do you have a better one? THIS WEEK - Irrational Atheists?, Proselytizing for Reason, and Arguing with Theists ... plus Another Goddamned Poll Ex thinks some atheists sound irrational when discussing politics. Are we more likely to give so-called liberals an unearned pass on providing evidence for their assertions? Do we have unreasonable "faith" in them? And what about our "faith" in accepting science when we aren’t experts? The Herd gives the word "faith" a hard examination. Hallelujah! It’s the Gospel of Reason Hour! Step into the tent, brothers and sisters in rationality, as we ponder the question - should we proselytize? What’s the difference between trying to convert someone to rational thinking and merely responding to people who vocalize their irrational beliefs? In our daily, non-blogging lives, should we always bother to respond to such people? How about on our blogs? What do we stand to gain from debates with Christians and other theists? Why do they seem to be in such need of converting us to Jesus (or whatever)? Are atheists falling further behind by not responding? Babs declares "Fuck it!" let’s have an atheist agenda. The result of the first AGP random sample, double-blind, peer-reviewed (by Evo) study concludes... well, you have to listen if you want the latest science on atheists and their pets! Each member of the Herd gets stranded on a desert island with one another person - who’s an adherent of a religion. But the atheist is allowed to choose the religion. Find out which forms of nonsense we godless castaways would be prepared to tolerate, and why. THIS WEEK - An Anti-Atheist Billboard, Clinton Sneakily Plays the Race Ccard, the FISA Senate Vote, and Casting Another Goddamned Podcast: The Movie It's ALIVE! The Chambersburg billboard, that is. Has the issue now evolved into one of "hate speech"? How can free-thinkers respond? Does the new sign subliminally accuse atheists of racial hatred? Ex (pissed off yet again) points out how Senator Clinton’s desperate campaign is also making racial insinuations. All of us are disgusted! And why the hell is she missing key Senate votes that most progressives believe are critical to protecting our Constitutional rights? Is it OK for someone who is supposed to be one of the "leaders" of the party to be off on the campaign trail at times like this? And why aren't more Democrats pissed off about granting immunity to telecom companies for cooperating in illegal warrantless wiretapping? Not that we have grandiose ideas or anything. But for Another Goddamned Podcast: The Movie, the members of the Herd become casting directors. We're looking for actors to play us and our fellow bloggers in the Atheosphere. YOU can be a casting director, too. Just leave your suggestions as a comment. Opening Music [00:00] excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft" Bridge Music [14:00]: excerpt from "Jesus Loves Me feat. THIS WEEK - Huckabee, Evangelical Buzz-Phrases, A Billboard Controversy, Atheist Victims, and Cats SI has a pleasant dream about Mike Huckabee and Ex turns it into a nightmare. The Herd adds a few wake-up calls of their own. Everyone on the panel agrees that atheists should recognize and reject evangelical buzz-phrases, including "pro-life," "family values," and "teach the controversy." Listen to hear even more. Ex defends the Christian owners of a billboard who chose to "rebut" an atheist ad that had been previously displayed there. The Herd weighs in. SI is cranky about his own reluctant answer. Do atheists have a victim mentality? Do too many of us love the "poor wittle atheist" ploy? Evo draws a distinction between being a victim and having to fight battles. Ex wonders if he, himself, doesn’t just have a chip on his shoulder. Listeners are asked and encouraged to leave their own victim stories - if they have any. The Herd refuses to buy OG’s self-characterization as "a quiet little mouse." Which leads us to a closing commentary on cats. THIS WEEK - Barack Obama: Pandering to the Pious Exterminator expresses outrage over Barack Obama’s "Committed Christian" flyer. Do we vote for a Democratic candidate when he or she openly panders to religious voters? OG vigorously agrees with Ex and says "no way." But Evo thinks this is not a time for anyone to take that stand. SI and Babs, although outraged by Obama's posturing, are ambivalent about what to do. Is Obama going to be a Faith Warrior for Christians, or is his talk just to cover his ass with Muslim-haters in America? Evo thinks it’s the latter. OG doesn’t trust Obama for a minute. Should atheists take a long or short political view? SI puts the question to Ex. Oddly, despite being the old fart on the panel, Ex argues for long-term success, even though that will surely mean some immediate failures. Is Babs a Southern Lady or not? Listen to the outtakes and decide for yourself.
