The sport of powerlifting is composed of competitive weight classes. As such, during the competitive growth of a powerlifter, they are faced with the decisions to choose a weight class to compete in. However, for a competitive advantage, a majority of competitive powerlifters choose to sit slightly above their chosen weight class and weight cut into competition. In this episode of the PRS Podcast we sit down with expert nutritionist, podcast host, coach and competitive fighter and powerlifter, Danny Lennon, MSc to discuss the topic of weight manipulation for the weight class sport of powerlifting. With the high variability of weight classes between federations, weigh in time period, and changes in weight classes within federations, we feel it's important to have an educated discussion about this to help athletes, coaches, and rehab clinicians, in the weight class/cut decisions making process to optimize short term and long term performance and physical and psychological health of the powerlifter. Some of the topics we covered in this episode include: What is a weight cut/loss versus a water cut and how does this vary depending on the “weigh in” time frame and goals of the lifter? How should someone decide when one or both is appropriate? What are factors that help you determine if confining to a weight class is appropriate for an athlete? Is the process different based on biological sex? What are non-dietary/training related factors that influence someone's ability to successfully manage and manipulate weight to be successful at weigh in and in a weight class How sleep and stress affect recovery and performance as well as body weight DURING meet week/water cut and long term What are the psychological implications of acute weight loss/manipulation and long term fat loss/caloric deficit? 2 versus 24 hour weigh ins - can we approach these differently from a long term and acute perspective? Scripture Reading: John 3:1-15 (and maybe John 3:16-21) Now a certain man, a Pharisee named Nicodemus, who was a member of the Jewish ruling council, 2 came to Jesus at night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs that you do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus replied, “I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter his mother's womb and be born a second time, can he?”5 Jesus answered, “I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must all be born from above.' 8 The wind blows wherever it will, and you hear the sound it makes, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”9 Nicodemus replied, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you don't understand these things? 11 I tell you the solemn truth, we speak about what we know and testify about what we have seen, but you people do not accept our testimony. 12 If I have told you people about earthly things and you don't believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven—the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”This week I want to slow down a bit and focus on the phrase “born again” (which the NET Bible translates as “born from above”). As usual, I will also briefly discuss the context of the passage and the Greek linguistic nuances. I. Context—Who were the Pharisees?A Christian website explains:The Pharisees were an influential religious sect within Judaism in the time of Christ and the early church. They were known for their emphasis on personal piety (the word Pharisee comes from a Hebrew word meaning “separated”), their acceptance of oral tradition in addition to the written Law, and their teaching that all Jews should observe all 600-plus laws in the Torah, including the rituals concerning ceremonial purification. The Pharisees were mostly middle-class businessmen and leaders of the synagogues. Though they were a minority in the Sanhedrin and held a minority number of positions as priests, they seemed to control the decision-making of the Sanhedrin because they had popular support among the people.Among the Pharisees were two schools of thought, based on the teachings of two rabbis, Shammai and Hillel. Shammai called for a strict, unbending interpretation of the Law on almost every issue, but Hillel taught a looser, more liberal application. Followers of Shammai fostered a hatred for anything Roman, including taxation—Jews who served as tax collectors were persona non grata. The Shammaites wanted to outlaw all communication and commerce between Jews and Gentiles. The Hillelites took a more gracious approach and opposed such extreme exclusiveness. Eventually, the two schools within Pharisaism grew so hostile to each other that they refused to worship together. The Pharisees accepted the written Word as inspired by God. At the time of Christ's earthly ministry, this would have been what we now call the Old Testament. Unfortunately, the Pharisees gave equal authority to oral tradition, saying the traditions went all the way back to Moses. Evolving over the centuries, the Pharisaic traditions had the effect of adding to God's Word, which is forbidden (Deuteronomy 4:2). The Gospels abound with examples of the Pharisees treating their traditions as equal to God's Word (Matthew 9:14; 15:1–9; 23:5; 23:16, 23; Luke 11:42). Jesus applied the condemnation of Isaiah 29:13 to the Pharisees, saying, “Their teachings are merely human rules” (Mark 7:7).II. The Double Entendre—Born Again or Born from AboveThe following two footnotes to John 3:3 on the NET Bible explain the issue very well:Or born again. The Greek word ἄνωθεν (anōthen) can mean both “again” and “from above,” giving rise to Nicodemus' misunderstanding about a second physical birth (v. 4).The word ἄνωθεν (anōthen) has a double meaning, either “again” (in which case it is synonymous with παλίν [palin]) or “from above” (BDAG 92 s.v. ἄνωθεν). This is a favorite technique of the author of the Fourth Gospel, and it is lost in almost all translations at this point. John uses the word 5 times, in 3:3, 7; 3:31; 19:11 and 23. In the latter 3 cases the context makes clear that it means “from above.” Here (3:3, 7) it could mean either, but the primary meaning intended by Jesus is “from above.” Nicodemus apparently understood it the other way, which explains his reply, “How can a man be born when he is old? He can't enter his mother's womb a second time and be born, can he?” The author uses the technique of the “misunderstood question” often to bring out a particularly important point: Jesus says something which is misunderstood by the disciples or (as here) someone else, which then gives Jesus the opportunity to explain more fully and in more detail what he really meant.III. Born Again—An Ontological Change or a Forensic Change? Both(Although the section above suggests that the more correct expression is “born from above,” the undeniable fact is that “born again” is the widely used phrase. So, I will also use the phrase “born again.”)Regardless if you are a Christian or not, you have probably heard the expression “born again” or “born again Christian.” What does that mean? The origin of the phrase is John 3:3 (although it also appears in 1 Peter). The meaning of it is recognized by nearly every Christian tradition, and it generally involves two ideas, one forensic and one ontological. Let's discuss each in turn.A Forensic Change—JustificationNicodemus thought he was already a son of God by virtue of his ancestry. He was a Jew so, in his mind, that conferred him the correct status before God. Jesus corrects Nicodemus. For Nicodemus to truly hold the correct status—that of being a child and heir of God—he must be born again. The idea of having the correct status or standing before God is a forensic (i.e., legal) idea. A modern example would be citizenship. The day I became a United States citizen, my person (or substance) did not change. I was the same guy the day before and the day after I became a citizen. I did not become a free-speech-defending person by virtue of my legal status. (Hopefully I am such a person, but the point is that it didn't happen because of a stamp on a document.) Citizenship was merely a forensic change. However, I don't use the word “merely” to minimize the importance of a forensic change. Becoming a citizen had tremendous impact in my life—granting me rights I did not have before.Similarly, new birth causes a forensic change in the believer. He now enjoys citizenship in the Kingdom of God. That citizenship is only possible because of another forensic change—the believer now stands blameless (or forgiven) before God. This idea is often called justification. An Ontological Change—RegenerationNicodemus, like everyone else, is a fallen man. The Kingdom of God is a place with no evil. Everyone will follow God perfectly—a being of infinite goodness, wisdom, and justice. How can a man ruled by flesh do anything else but obey his own flesh? How can a man, whose very nature is opposed to the Spirit of God, follow the Spirit instead? That man must be changed. He must turn (or be turned) from his evil ways and start growing in the righteousness of God. This is the ontological component of new birth. The very person, his substance, is changed. This idea is often called regeneration. These ideas of justification and regeneration are so important and central to the Christian faith, that I decided to set forth examples from multiple denominations. Notice that different denominations may differ on the moment of rebirth (i.e., baptism vis-à-vis a born-again experience), but the doctrinal unity on the new birth is incredible.Baptist Faith and Message 2000, IV SalvationSalvation involves the redemption of the whole man, and is offered freely to all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, who by His own blood obtained eternal redemption for the believer. In its broadest sense salvation includes regeneration, justification, sanctification, and glorification. There is no salvation apart from personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord.A. Regeneration, or the new birth, is a work of God's grace whereby believers become new creatures in Christ Jesus. It is a change of heart wrought by the Holy Spirit through conviction of sin, to which the sinner responds in repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Repentance and faith are inseparable experiences of grace.Repentance is a genuine turning from sin toward God. Faith is the acceptance of Jesus Christ and commitment of the entire personality to Him as Lord and Saviour.B. Justification is God's gracious and full acquittal upon principles of His righteousness of all sinners who repent and believe in Christ. Justification brings the believer unto a relationship of peace and favor with God.Book of Concord, III. The Righteousness of Faith Before God5. We believe, teach, and confess that according to the usage of Holy Scripture the word justify means in this article, to absolve, that is, to declare free from sins. Prov. 17:15: He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, even they both are abomination to the Lord. Also Rom. 8:33: Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.6. We believe, teach, and confess also that notwithstanding the fact that many weaknesses and defects cling to the true believers and truly regenerate, even to the grave, still they must not on that account doubt either their righteousness which has been imputed to them by faith, or the salvation of their souls, but must regard it as certain that for Christ's sake, according to the promise and [immovable] Word of the holy Gospel, they have a gracious God.8. We believe, teach, and confess that, although the contrition that precedes, and the good works that follow, do not belong to the article of justification before God, yet one is not to imagine a faith of such a kind as can exist and abide with, and alongside of, a wicked intention to sin and to act against the conscience. But after man has been justified by faith, then a true living faith worketh by love, Gal. 5:6, so that thus good works always follow justifying faith, and are surely found with it, if it be true and living; for it never is alone, but always has with it love and hope.Catholic Encyclopedia, RegenerationRegeneration is a Biblico-dogmatic term closely connected with the ideas of justification, Divine sonship, and the deification of the soul through grace. Confining ourselves first to the Biblical use of this term, we find regeneration from God used in indissoluble connection with baptism, which St. Paul expressly calls "the laver of regeneration" (Titus 3:5). In His discourse with Nicodemus (John 3:5), the Saviour declares: "Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." In this passage Christianity from its earliest days has found the proof that baptism may not be repeated, since a repeated regeneration from God is no less a contradiction than repeated physical birth from a mother. The idea of "birth from God" enjoys a special favour in the Joannine theology. Outside the Fourth Gospel (1:12 sq.; 3:5), the Apostle uses the term in a variety of ways, treating "birth of God" as synonymous now with the "doing of justice" (1 John 5:1, 4 sq.), and elsewhere deducing from it a certain "sinlessness" of the just (1 John 3:9; 5:18), which, however, does not necessarily exclude from the state of justification the possibility of sinning (cf. Bellarmine, "De justificatione", III, xv). It is true that in all these passages there is no reference to baptism nor is there any reference to a real "regeneration"; nevertheless, "generation from God", like baptismal "regeneration", must be referred to justification as its cause.United Methodist Church, Book of Discipline, The Confession of Faith of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, Article IX—Justification and RegenerationWe believe we are never accounted righteous before God through our works or merit, but that penitent sinners are justified or accounted righteous before God only by faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. We believe regeneration is the renewal of man in righteousness through Jesus Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, whereby we are made partakers of the divine nature and experience newness of life. By this new birth the believer becomes reconciled to God and is enabled to serve him with the will and the affections. We believe, although we have experienced regeneration, it is possible to depart from grace and fall into sin; and we may even then, by the grace of God, be renewed in righteousness.17th Catechetical Lecture, Saint Cyril of Jerusalem[I]f you play the hypocrite, though men baptize you now, the Holy Spirit will not baptize you. But if you approach with faith, though men minister in what is seen, the Holy Ghost bestows that which is unseen. . . . [I]f you be counted worthy of the grace, your soul will be enlightened, you will receive a power which you had not, you will receive weapons terrible to the evil spirits . . . .If you believe, you shall not only receive remission of sins, but also do things which pass man's power. receivest now remission of thy sins, and the gifts of the King's spiritual bounty.

Pet safety over the 4th of July is very important. The 4th of July can mean fun, food, friends and fireworks for people, but for our pets, it can feel more like a scary alien invasion! In fact, July 5th is the busiest day of the year for animal shelters, which fill up quickly with animals who panic and flee the bright lights and loud noises of holiday celebrations. Make July 4th a pet-riotic holiday by following these steps for a stress free day for both you and your fur-kids. Prepare for the worst-case scenario. July 4th is a great annual reminder to be prepared in case your pet escapes or gets lost. If your pet is not wearing a collar with an ID tag, now is the best time to get one. You'll also want to double check that your pet is microchipped and that the chip is registered with updated contact information. Avoid the crowds. Avoid bringing your pooch to super crowded events, parades, and other gatherings with a lot of commotion or people. A combination of heat, loud noises, packed spaces and scorching blacktop can not only be stressful, but harmful to your pet's health. Better to leave them at home in a cool spot with lots of water. It's especially wise to avoid bringing your pets to firework events, as they could panic and try to run. Work them out. Be sure to give your pets lots of exercise during the day, so they'll be a little worn out before the scary noises start at night. A nice long run or play session during the daytime will help with your pet's overall stress and anxiety levels. Some pets may sleep right through the night time celebrations! Head indoors before the fun begins. Don't wait for the fireworks to be in full swing before taking care of your pet. It's best to bring him or her indoors or put them in a cozy spot well ahead of the first boom of fireworks. Which brings us to… Create a safe space. Pre-pyrotechnics, create a safe, escape-proof space in your home. Lower the blinds, close the windows, provide a bed or crate where they feel comfortable, offer a special chew or toy to distract them and turn on the TV or radio to help mask the noises outside. Wrap them up. Confining movement in dogs and cats actually has a calming effect on them, which is why you might want to consider an anti-anxiety wrap or coat. Try this one, available on Amazon. In a pinch, you can even create one from a scarf. Give them a chill pill. If you're really worried about a pet who stresses easily, talk to your vet in advance about anti-anxiety chews, drops or other remedies that can help your pet relax. There are plenty of prescription and homeopathic solutions out there that can help your pet get the extra dose of relaxation that he or she needs. Independence Day is fun for us, but it's the worst day imaginable for some cats and dogs. They literally think the world is ending! Do them a favor and make sure they're well protected and safe so they stay with you for many years to come. Happy Fourth!

Is there any hope of a sustainable human future? Confining myself mainly to the UK context, I attempt to address this question through an analysis of collective pain in relation to economic fragility, the COVID 19 pandemic, and Brexit. I start by giving the historical development of so-called neo-liberalism, focussing on its effect on organised labour and the results of FIRE sector deregulation, which together, I claim, resulted in intensified collective resentment, anomie and alienation in the midst of economic collapse. I end up recommending 'optimism of the will, pessimism of the intellect' as the way forward and draw attention to some promising events and movements. [Free. 32 minutes.]

We are going to spend time on sexuality and in the coming weeks we will address many topics, including masturbation, pornography, adulterous affairs, pre-marital sex, asexuality, homosexuality, artificial contraception and sexual trauma and its effects. But to put those issues into context, we need to understand what a health sexuality looks like. Vitally important because sexuality is so sensitive to how we live our lives in the natural realm Also vitally important because an authentic Catholic view on sexuality is so radically different from what the world offers us. Most baptized Catholic reject Catholic teaching on many sexual issues. So many Catholics struggle with sexual issues. Lots of confusion. Lots of distress. We need a guiding star, an image of what sexuality should be. That's what this episode is about. We will look at the authoritative sources of Catholic teaching but really flesh them out in a way that appreciates how people are wired physiologically, neurologically and psychologically So we can have answers to why we so often find ourselves falling and going astray in the sexual realm. Parts Examples Vitally important to recognize a healthy sexuality because our sexuality is so sensitive to how we live our lives in the natural realm -- are we living in an ordered, virtuous way in harmony with natural and divine realities, or are we basing our actions on our subjective, distorted perceptions of reality. Sexuality is either the first or one of the first areas in our life to go wrong when we depart from reality. Sensitive barometer to how things are ordered or not ordered in our lives. Most baptized Catholic report that they reject Catholic teaching on many sexual issues. Pew 2014 Survey of more than 7200 Catholics, 57% Favor or Strongly Favor Same-sex Marriages Pew 2016 survey of 817 Catholics only 8% of Catholics believe using contraception is morally wrong. 41% believe its morally acceptable and 48% believe it's not a moral issue. Lots more statistics Social referencing: evaluating one's own modes of thinking, expression, or behavior by comparing them with those of other people so as to understand how to react in a particular situation and to adapt one's actions and reactions in ways that are perceived to be appropriate. APA dictionary Lukewarm Catholics look a lot like lukewarm Methodists, look a lot like lukewarm Jews, look a lot like lukewarm Buddhists, look a lot like lukewarm agnostics, look a lot like lukewarm atheists. Going with the cultural flow Relying on own perceptions and insights Everybody being influenced by the societal trends. We don't want to be constrained Reductionism. Universal, Eternal Moral Laws --> Confining, chafing Rules --> outdated decrees from decades or centuries ago, promulgated by old white men in black cassocks who aren't supposed to be having sex anyway -- what do they know? How are these teaching possibly relevant to my life in the 2020s. Thou shalt not, thou shalt not, creating an impression that sex is bad, almost any sexual activity is bad, I'm tired of being told how bad I am . License vs. freedom Freedom is the capacity to choose the good for me and for others Freedom is the power, rooted in reason and will, to act or not to act, to do this or that, and so to perform deliberate actions on one's own responsibility. By free will one shapes one's own life. Human freedom is a force for growth and maturity in truth and goodness; it attains its perfection when directed toward God, our beatitude (#1731). License is the capacity to choose what I want -- to take what I want root of licentiousness -- lacking legal or moral restraints and especially disregarding sexual restraints Me as the measure Enlightenment -- man as the measure of all things instead of God. Ordered sexuality is what I think it is for me. Assumption that I know what is best for me, by my own lights No need for divine revelation No acceptance of an external authority Chesterton “We do not really want a religion that is right where we are right. What we want is a religion that is right where we are wrong.” The Catholic Church and Conversion Assumption that I can determine what is best for me. So many Catholics struggle with sexual issues. Lots of confusion. Lots of distress. Catholic teaching on sexuality is very misunderstood, often watered down, often misrepresented. Intensity of bodily experience -- affects us. Market for it. We have itching ears 2 Timothy 4: 2-4 Preach the word: be instant in season, out of season: reprove, entreat, rebuke in all patience and doctrine. 3 For there shall be a time, when they will not endure sound doctrine; but, according to their own desires, they will heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears: 4 And will indeed turn away their hearing from the truth, but will be turned unto fables. St. Hilary of Poitiers: mid-fourth century AD: …they will gather teachers together for these things which they desire. They will compile a doctrine that fits in with their desires, since they are no longer eager to be taught. They want to bring together teachers for that which they already desire in order that this large number of teachers whom they have sought and assembled may satisfy the doctrines of their own passionate desires. ON THE TRINITY 10.2.69 GK Chesterton: The Catholic Church and Conversion 1926 : We do not really want a religion that is right where we are right. What we want is a religion that is right where we are wrong. In these current fashions it is not really a question of the religion allowing us liberty; but (at the best) of the liberty allowing us a religion. These people merely take the modern mood, with much in it that is amiable and much that is anarchical and much that is merely dull and obvious, and then require any creed to be cut down to fit that mood. But the mood would exist even without the creed. They say they want a religion to be social, when they would be social without any religion. They say they want a religion to be practical, when they would be practical without any religion. They say they want a religion acceptable to science, when they would accept the science even if they did not accept the religion. They say they want a religion like this because they are like this already. They say they want it, when they mean that they could do without it. It is a very different matter when a religion, in the real sense of a binding thing, binds men to their morality when it is not identical with their mood. It is very different when some of the saints preached social reconciliation to fierce and raging factions who could hardly bear the sight of each others' faces. It was a very different thing when charity was preached to pagans who really did not believe in it; just as it is a very different thing now, when chastity is preached to new pagans who do not believe in it. It is in those cases that we get the real grapple of religion; and it is in those cases that we get the peculiar and solitary triumph of the Catholic faith. It is not in merely being right when we are right, as in being cheerful or hopeful or humane. It is in having been right when we were wrong, and in the fact coming back upon us afterwards like a boomerang. One word that tells us what we do not know outweighs a thousand words that tell us what we do know. And the thing is all the more striking if we not only did not know it but could not believe it. It may seem a paradox to say that the truth teaches us more by the words we reject than by the words we receive. Subjectivity Physical Laws Gravity -- Peter Pan issue Fairy Dust was added later for health and safety reasons. Originally Peter and the Lost Boys could fly unaided, but after several reports of children injuring themselves attempting to fly from their beds, JM Barrie added Fairy Dust as a necessary factor for flying. Seeking license at the expense of freedom We need a guiding star, an image of what sexuality should be Bear with me here -- we will review what the Catholic church teaches about sexuality, but this is not primarily an apologetics show or a catechetical podcast. Chastity CCC 2337 Chastity means the successful integration of sexuality within the person and thus the inner unity of man in his bodily and spiritual being. Sexuality, in which man's belonging to the bodily and biological world is expressed, becomes personal and truly human when it is integrated into the relationship of one person to another, in the complete and lifelong mutual gift of a man and a woman. The virtue of chastity therefore involves the integrity of the person and the integrality of the gift. Unpack this Sexuality is embodied Sexuality is relational. Complete and lifelong gift Integrity of the person Integrality of the gift -- the state of being total and complete Mt 5:27-28 27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.' 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Laws are like signposts around a pasture. Five Main reasons why our sexuality becomes distorted and dysfunctional for most people Not understanding who God is -- God images -- Not orienting ourselves toward God Not understanding who we are -- self images Episodes 23-29 God images and Self images Not understanding the entirety of the gift in relationship Not understanding the importance of the sacramental bond in marriage -- graces that are so helpful. It's too hard. -- And it is too hard if we are closed to the graces. All things are possible with God. Other possible causes Genetic problems, especially with the sex chromosomes Congenital bodily defects Endocrine problems with sex hormones -- woman with high levels of testosterone If we really knew who God was and if we held on to that consistently -- if we really knew who we were and held on to that knowledge consistently -- we would follow Him and his laws for us. The laws are made for our good. Taking the problem back the to the root causes. Taking the sexual act out of context. Love -- Charity -- Caritas Culture as the measure Social referencing: evaluating one's own modes of thinking, expression, or behavior by comparing them with those of other people so as to understand how to react in a particular situation and to adapt one's actions and reactions in ways that are perceived to be appropriate. APA dictionary Why are we confused and why do we engage in sexual vice? Traditional explanation Pride. Reaching for omniscience reaching for omnipotence Making myself God. Lust And those things are there. Alternative explanation Seeking some good in a misguided way -- seeking something we need Safety and Security Love Connection, relationships What does ordered sexuality look like Sexual acts in the context of marriage Grounded in and informed by charity, expressed through chastity Gift of self CCC 2339 Chastity includes an apprenticeship in self-mastery which is a training in human freedom. The alternative is clear: either man governs his passions and finds peace, or he lets himself be dominated by them and becomes unhappy. God is love -- is God involved. Husbands, love your wives as Christ also loved the Church Prayer before sexual act -- Book of Tobit, Chapter 8 -- Tobias and Sarah How far is too far -- Sin lead to a lack of integration in us -- internal disconnects among our parts. Parts -- reviewed this in the last episode, #49 The separate mental subsystems within us, each with own idiosyncratic range of emotion, style of expression, abilities, desires, views of the world. Modes of operating Subpersonalities Orchestra model Focus is on integration. Each part had good intentions for us, is trying to pursue a good. Each part has a different understanding of sexuality, a different perspective on sexuality, based on its experiences and how it made sense of those experiences Examples of parts Affair Linda 43 years old, returning to work as an ad executive in an agency after 15 years out of field, when she was a stay-at home mom Likes the work, likes the income, the sense of being valued, the professional wardrobe Husband is distant from her, preoccupied with work, deeply involved with sports both on TV and with their sons Not attuned to her sexually, emotionally, relationally Sex is ungratifying to her, she feels used, she doesn't know how to approach him about it, fears his anger Sex is about biweekly, little romance, little foreplay, over quickly as he orgasms and then falls asleep Resigned to the idea that this is just how it's going to be with him. Body issues going back to teenage years, a little overweight, not the most stylish clothes, teased, called names. Not one of the in crowd -- issues of self-worth Going well at the agency, resuming career trajectory New hire -- Tom, a high school classmate of hers -- popular, soccer player, one of the in-crowd, homecoming court. He remembers her, is friendly, cordial She helps him get oriented to the job, even though he is senior to her. Remembering old time Lingering over conversations He's divorced, 2 kids, he shares a little of his story with her, not a lot. Tom seeks to get her assigned to his division. Notices her new outfit (Her husband never does), but not a direct complement, nothing overt, nothing that you could really pin down. Linda is drawn to him. Linda's parts Intimacy-seeking part He is so warm and kind, so affirming -- I need affirmation. Powerful longings stirring in a part that had been exiled, suppressed. Starving for gentleness, kindness, attention. Disconnected from God -- God is distant, cold. Life and death survival. I need this, I deserve this. Statue God image from Episode 25 Moral part Warning bells starting to sound -- I'm being attracted, this is not right -- moral part of her. Conscience. Fears of acting out, fears of being shamed, fears of sinning and God's anger -- God is near, but really demanding. Drill sergeant God image, like from Episode 25. Minimizing part. Nothing's going to happen. I'm too old, I'm not attractive, I would never cross boundaries with him anyway, it's unthinkable. Not to say that lust and pride are not operative. Seeking evil. Imagine what might happen if God gave us everything we wanted. A fabulous new car, straight As, a triple salary raise—all ours without effort, just for the asking. Now imagine the problems that come along with unearned riches, new luxury cars, and unmerited scholastic recognition. What would we do with a huge salary raise that had been granted for no reason? How would we handle our new financial responsibilities? And how would we live up to that raise? Could we ever make it appear that we deserve such pay when we know we don’t? What about that fantastic new car? Most come with expensive insurance premiums and hefty maintenance costs. Are we prepared to care for what we’ve asked for? Academic honors? Could we perform like A students after we’d been given high marks we hadn’t earned? What would we do if we were exposed as frauds? When we talk to God, we need to remember that we live in the real world. We earn rewards and learn to handle them as we do. Confining our prayers to requests for knowledge of God’s will, the power to carry it out, and the ability to live with the consequences will ensure that we get no more than we can handle. ––––=–––– Just for today: I will pray only for knowledge of God’s will and the power to carry that out in the real world.
I knew my life would completely change when I had kids. Not only did all the details of what my life looked like change… But it also impacted other relationships, My goals, My plans, And even me. Becoming a parent drastically affected ME. At first, it felt limiting. That by choosing to be a parent, I was limiting my future options. Confining myself for the next 18+ years… Putting “my life” on hold. Don't get me wrong, I WANTED to be a parent. I loved my kiddo. And I even wanted to have more than one kid. But there were aspects of it that felt constricting. When I realized WHY I felt this way, it changed everything. And it no longer felt constricting—it felt FREEING. Anyone ever feel like that? Like you're putting your life on hold by having kids? I've found that this is a common struggle moms have. And I want you to know that you are not alone. Check out today's episode to learn this secret changed everything. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/trimestersecrets/support
Intro Hi everyone and welcome to the Books Between Podcast! I believe in empowering children by helping them discover who they are as readers. My goal is to help you connect kids between 8-12 with fabulous reading experiences and share inspiring conversations with the authors and educators who make that magic happen. I’m your host, Corrina Allen - a mom of two, a 5th grade teacher, and thinking about how much I LOVE our public libraries and how much they are needed. My daughters and I just launched our summer Library Crawl where we try to hit as many public libraries in the area as can and explore their unique services and collections and just get to know them. Libraries are the heart of our communities. Please support them. This is Episode #55 and oday I want to chat with you about being a book witch, and then I’ll share a conversation with Melissa Sarno, author of Just Under the Clouds! I have three super quick announcements for you! First is a Middle Grade at Heart Book Club update. The August pick is Where the Watermelons Grow, the September pick is The House That Lou Built and in October we will be reading Three Rules of Everyday Magic. And all of those authors are scheduled to come on the show - so stay tuned for that! And announcement #2 - don’t forget that Monday nights are the #MGBookChat Twitter chats with upcoming topics like #ownvoices, the importance of refugee stories, and books that battle mental health stigmas. So set a reminder for Mondays at 9pm EST and check out #MGBookChat on Twitter for conversations and collaboration between educators, librarians, and authors. And - finally, announcement #3. This is something that has been semi-secretly in the works for a few months now, but I am so happy to make it official. NerdCamp Central New York is ON for next summer - August 6, 2019! So - if you want to experience some of that NerdCamp magic and you’re able to make it to Syracuse, NY - save the date! And you can follow @NerdCampCNY on Twitter for more updates. Main Topic - Being a Book Witch And you can go ahead and replace that W with a B if you’d like. So - I had a topic planned for today. I had an outline, things were coming together, and then I saw a post. And then some tweets. From several people, including Donalyn Miller, who were attending a recent Scholastic Reading Summit. It was it from a presentation by Annie Ward - or at least referencing her work From Striving to Thriving: How to Grow Capable, Confident Readers. And it was one slide showing ways that educators and parents can be what she called “Book Wardens”. And well, it struck me so forcefully. And made me think of all those times as a teacher and as a parent, I have been that Book Witch. I am recovering - but yeah…. that was me. So I scrapped my other topic and that’s what I want to talk to you about today. First - ways we might not even realize that we’re being book snobs and inadvertently turning kids off to reading - both from Annie’s presentation and from my own mistakes. And then some thoughts on ways we can do better. Although to be up front with you - my understanding of this is evolving. Starting with the first bullet on that slide. 1. Confining kids to “just right” books - gulp. That is a phrase I have used ever since... I don’t know when! A have a big lesson on choosing “just right” or “good fit” books complete with a whole array of shoes I bring in to demonstrate! But now I am wondering… who SETS the criteria for “right”? Is it.. Level? Genre? Format? Perceived complexity? Something I’ve started doing is turning these questions back on myself. Okay Corrina, what’s a “just right” book for you? Well -it depends! What am I in the mood for? What do I want to learn? What are my friends all reading that looks amazing and I want IN on THAT conversation! When I think about it that way, it’s not really about picking a book off the shelf and reading the first page and counting the errors on my fingers. Adults don’t do that! And - we are definitely NOT picking from the bin labeled Level Z or only reading within our lexile level. So why are we asking kids to do that? What DO we do? We weigh all those factors, gather some options, and try them out. If it’s too hard, well…. then…. I’m just going to put The Iliad off to the side for now. I think we need to trust kids more. And be more open about how you actually go about choosing books. And maybe I don’t totally drop the phrase “just right” but shift it to be child-centered and NOT mean “just right” from MY point of view. 2. Express book snobbery. So, you might be a book snob, if you’ve said one these things (and I’ve said a few of them in the past…): “Graphic novels are not real reading.” “Don’t just listen to that audio book - make sure you are following along in your book.” “I only really like literary books - you know award-winners.” “Well, I’ve never heard of that book!” “NEVER watch the movie before reading the book!” “I get all my book recommendations from NPR.” “They’re reading THAT? I guess it’s better than reading nothing!” “I don’t watch TV. Never. I just read.” “I only read books for adults.” (Credit to Sarah Threlkeld for suggesting that one.) “Yeah, we’re only reading CLASSICS in this class.” “Romance novels are all the same.” (And you can replace romance with mysteries, westerns, fantasy.) “Are you reading a picture book? Maybe you should choose something more your age.” “You dog-ear your pages? You beast!” “Fan Fiction doesn’t count toward your reading minutes.” So - that last one? About the fan fiction? Was me - a few years ago. But then, I discovered that Angie Thomas (you know - author of New York Times Bestselling, multiple award-winning The Hate U Give) got her start writing fanfiction for her favorite soap opera. And suddenly I thought, maybe I’m being kind of a witch about this. And then, I discovered Star Wars fan fiction and I was hooked. I think I spent about a week just immersed in alternative Star Wars universes. So go ahead - come at me about the fan fiction! 3. Look askance at funny, edgy, or “forbidden” topics. So, confession time. Way back when I was just getting starting as a teacher and starting to build my classroom library, I would ONLY purchase what I, the book witch, deemed as high quality literature. Captain Underpants? Comics? Joke books? Diary of a Wimpy Kid? Uh...no. And oh do I owe those kids an apology. I was flat out wrong. And clearly not remembering all the Garfield and Calvin & Hobbes books that I devoured as a young kid. I’m happy to say our class is filled with Dav Pilkey books and all kids of funny, light-hearted books. Because, wow - don’t we need that now? And as far as edgy or “forbidden” topics - that has always rubbed me the wrong way. Edgy according to who? I’ve seen adults roll their eyes when a 10 year old picked a book about the WWE. I’ve seen adults try to ban books with characters who are dealing with substance abuse. And I’ve seen adults pluck books with gay characters out of their kids hands. Who are we to tell kids that their family, their life, their experiences are “too edgy” and not allowed. 4. Frowning upon rereading. Yup - this is another one I have done regularly. And I think it comes from a well-intentioned place. When you know how many amazing books are out there, you want kids to experience that. And I think for me, I have the bias that I am not typically a HUGE rereader. Aside from a few books that I might reread for school or book club (like Home of the Brave, or Wonder), I find it so hard to resist the siren call of my TBR pile. But last year, instead of giving side-eye to those kids rereading Dork Diaries or Smile for the 3rd or 4th (or 12th!) time - instead, I tried to act excited and say, “Wow - what do you love so much about that book? What are you noticing now that you never noticed the first time you read it?” And the reframing has helped me recognize more value in rereading. And those conversations help me understand my readers better and offer them similar titles they might enjoy to expand their reading palate. 5. Imposing Accountability Measures for Reading. I’ll admit - I had to think about this one for a minute. But I think what this is getting at is when ‘points programs” like AR (Accelerated Reader) are used to confine student reading in an attempt to make sure there is tangible proof of reading. Accountability measures might include parent sign-offs on a reading log or requiring a summary each night. That imposition on reading. Instead - the best “accountability” is a culture of reading where kids want to talk about what they are reading. And your tangible proof are conferences and conversations and observations. 6. Treating some books like “dessert”. And only allowing kids to read them after they’ve read something more suitable. Usually when I see this - those “dessert” books are graphic novels, or Minecraft books. Now - there are times when I will say, “Let’s take some some time to read our Book Club novels. And if you finish your section for the day, read whatever you want.” But always treating SOME TYPES of books like just fluff - is being a book witch. So those were the main points from Annie Ward. But I’ll add one more. 7. Not letting kids take the books home. I used to treat MY books like they were GOLD. And I would let kids read them in class but then not let them out of my sight. I lost fewer books - but I also lost readers. Now - they go home with them. Usually they come back, but if not - I just hope that book meant so much to that child that they couldn’t bare to part with it. So, I am a recovering Book Witch! And I mentioned some things we can do instead, but to quickly sum up, here they are: Let kids take the lead in what “just right” reading means for them - including their mood and what they are interested in, the format, the social connections they want to form around that reading - and not just a level. Don’t be a book snob! Openly embrace and book talk all genres and formats and expand your horizons. Watch your words and your body language to make sure you are not looking down on kids’ reading choices or making them feel ashamed for reading a text some might consider “edgy.” If a child is rereading a book - ask them about it! Or ask them to book talk it to the class! Instead of cumbersome attempts at reading accountability, instead - watch your kids, have conversations about the books, confer with them and have them read to you. Let kids take books home. And be gracious when they get lost or damaged. And finally - trust the kids and trust the books. If you want to know more about Annie Ward’s work with co-author Stephanie Harvey, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of From Striving to Thriving: How to Grow Capable, Confident Readers. And as always, we are learning together and helping each other out, so please share your thoughts about overcoming being a book witch. Melissa Sarno - Interview Outline Joining me this month for our Middle Grade at Heart interview with Melissa Sarno is author Julie Artz. We got a chance to sit down together last month to chat about Just Under the Clouds. Take a listen… Just Under the Clouds CA: For our listeners who haven’t yet read Just Under the Clouds what is this story about? CA: One of my favorite parts of the book is when Cora goes to her remedial math class and her new teacher gives her some advice about solving algebra problems. She says: “I’ll give you a hint. It’s always easiest to start from the end. Start backward.” I’m wondering - when if your own life have you found it easier to start at the end? JA: I loved the friendship between Cora and Sabina. They both have experienced intense loneliness due to an unconventional lifestyle, but the moment when they commit to their friendship--even though they may end up apart--was really touching. How did you come up with the idea for this complex and lovely friendship? JA: Adare is such a vivid character despite being mostly non-verbal. What research went into creating her character? **BONUS SPOILER SECTION: Melissa and Julie and I discuss the ending of the novel, and if you’d like to hear that conversation, I moved that part of the recording to after the end credits of today’s episode at the 37:50 mark. Your Writing Life JA: I loved the tree book and all that it represented for Cora. How much time did you spend researching trees for the story, or has that always been an interest of yours? CA: What are you working on now? Your Reading Life CA: One of the goals of this podcast is to help educators and librarians inspire kids to read more and connect them with amazing books. Did you have a special teacher or librarian in your life who helped you grow into a reader? JA: What types of books did you love when you were Cora’s age? CA: What are you reading now? Available On: iTunes | Google Play | Stitcher | Spotify Charles Mayfield, both an early adopter and leader in the paleo nutrition world, got started down this road based on personal desire to put the best, healthiest, and nutritious food on the table for himself and his family. His intention recently expanded from that to now include being responsible for raising healthy livestock and taking care of our land, making it sustainable and renewable for years and generations to come. Charles is the co-author of one of the first cookbooks ever written for paleo recipes, is the co-founder of Atlanta Strength and Conditioning, and is the owner of his own farm, Mayfield Pastures, primarily for providing pastured poultry, pork and beef for his family while building the size and infrastructure to expand his operation and offerings to his local community. Charles is also an avid hunter, gardener, distiller, and BJJ enthusiast. This was a particularly fun interview for me as Charles and I connect on so many things at so many levels. He was an early adopter of CrossFit, he attended the CrossFit Games in 2009, the one in which I competed, he was friends with Robb Wolf before Robb was a known figure, and he co-wrote one of my favorite of all time paleo cookbooks! When I met him at Paleo FX, I was amazed that we hadn't spent more time getting to know one another prior to that time. Charles' farm adventure is incredibly inspiring, considering the fact that he's only been at it for 2 years. After reading and studying the likes of Joel Salatin and regenerative farming, he decided to take action (many of us never get to this part... thinking about an idea for years before doing anything to move forward.) Moving his family from Atlanta to rural Tennessee, he built a regenerative farm with chickens, pigs and cows, and his entire family is reaping the rewards of it today. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did! FORWARD TO A FRIEND - If you enjoy the podcast, please help us spread the word by sharing it. LEAVE A REVIEW - Your written reviews in iTunes go a long way in helping us get the word out. Here's a link to make it easy - bit.ly/breakingordinary. Thanks in advance for your help and support! Getting 1-day old baby turkey chicks by mail. The unknown gender challenge of baby chickens. Charles’ 3 roosters: Boss, Red, and Blondie. Getting chased and attacked by Blondie. How kids deal with natural animal deaths on the farm Charles’ definition of regenerative farming - “utilizing natural ecosystems to their fullest advantage”. Moving animals on the land to take advantage of the natural eating and elimination cycles of each different types to maximize the impact on the ground. Confining and moving chickens around with a moveable fenced in area connected to a tractor (like a playpen). Using simple, lightweight, electrified fencing to herd and move cows and pigs. Cycle time for cows getting back to the same land they started on - about 40-50 days The amazing regeneration of the vegetation in 3-4 weeks on the land that has been seemingly destroyed by pigs Chores as meditation Early morning workouts - Jiu Jitsu Eating ketogenic (predominantly) Dealing with extra food from the garden Making homemade chicken nuggets Charles’ system for keeping organized - using a planning system created by life coach Tommy Newberry, google calendar, and weekly lists Castrating pigs humanely Using the Farmer’s Almanac to decide when to castrate pigs (among other things - excellent reference tool) Great sources for getting started with regenerative farming - Diego Footer, Darby Simpson, Diana Rogers Distilling fuel and repurposing some of the byproducts of farming (like lard) Episode Links Square Foot Gardening Robb Wolf Paleo Comfort Foods PaleoFx The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan Farming Consumer Legal Defense Fund Joel Salatin Polyface Farms Savory institute Mayfield Ice Cream Seat of the Soul Fahrenheit 451 Jordan Peterson The Good Kitchen Blue Apron Tommy Newberry, life coach Farmer’s Almanac Grass Fed Life Sustainable Dish Diego Footer, Darby Simpson, Diana Rogers Connect with Charles Paleo Comfort Foods Website Charles on Facebook Mayfield Pastures Instagram Questions? Local worship leader, Gina Zarletti, joins us to discuss the trends of modern day worship music in the church and whether it has to forsake artistic integrity to be conducive to corporate worship. We explore questions about how to balance emotionalism vs intellectual worship with current music trends and she shares her testimony about singing along with her dad in heaven.

Perhaps you perceive religion as morally constraining. Or, have you thought about following a religious code as a means for ultimate moral freedom? This sermon shows how in Christianity one gets something utterly unique: Real Freedom within Real Limits.
Cetaceans are whales and dolphins. They are social animals whose home is the oceans. Confining orcas, dolphins, etc. is abusive.

THIS WEEK - It's the Faith-Based Economy, Stupid Evo plays host this week, and everyone's invited to his anti-Republican party. He kicks off the festivities by explaining the origins of the "free market" in America, and we discuss why it's built into the nation's psyche. Does that still make sense today? Or is free-market worship just a "faith" position. Ex thinks the "American Dream" is a nightmare perpetrated by the GOP. How did we get into the economic mess we're in? Surprise: It wasn't just the Republicans. Incompetence and greed may not know party lines, but certainly the drive to deregulate has come from the Right, allegedly in defense of "free markets" - that don't even exist. Aren't all economic philosophies somewhat "faith-based"? After all, there's no scientific evidence that any system would work under all circumstances. However, there's plenty of evidence that the system now in place doesn't work. (Hint: Peek in your wallet.) In the beginning of the last segment, Evo asked if a defense of "free markets" could be supported Constitutionally. Do people confuse our individual rights with the rights of corporations? Philly goes back to that question and shares (at no cost!) his insights. The government bails out businesses, but not individuals; that's "corporate socialism," of course. While the Herd isn't happy with the deregulators, are some of us right to label their ideas as "faith"? What's the difference between faith and opinion, anyway? Chappy says that with supportable opinions, we can rationally attack a notion — but not with faith. OG does the impossible when she makes Ex reexamine his position. Ex grabs back the mike and takes us through puzzles, polls, and quizzes. Even as a rational thinker, you may find that you are CONfounded, but you should have no trouble CONfining your CONfusion to this podcast only! Remember, Ex is a bit of a CONman. By the way, you won't want to miss SI do his short stand-up comedy routine.
