His research utilizes preclinical models to investigate psychopathological behavior. He has authored and co-authored papers in leading scientific journals, including his groundbreaking studies relating to abortion and abortion-pill reversal. His research efforts currently focus on investigating: 1) the neurological, biological and behavioral consequences of drug-induced abortion, 2) the abortion-pill-reversal, 3) the development of an animal model for relocating the embryo in ectopic pregnancy and 4) mental health and related behaviors in the university student population.ABSTRACTAbortion-pill reversal (APR) is the process where a woman, regretting her abortion shortly after taking mifepristone (RU486), is administered progesterone in an effort to stop and reverse the abortion process. APR is treated as medically/scientifically unsound and dangerous to women. However, what does the reality tell us? Does objective reality support the narrative fed to the public? This presentation will seek to address the objective scientific reality underlying APR, including recent findings from my laboratory. The presentation will also address briefly the previous preclinical findings pertaining to the negative consequences of abortion and aspects relating to the abuses and manipulation of objective scientific truth in the current mode of operation of the scientific and medical fields that are driving the attack on APR.STACY TRASANCOS, PHDFROM BLUE JEANS TO VACCINES: THE CONSCIENCE OF AN ABORTIFACIENT WORLDStacy Trasancos has a Ph.D. in chemistry from Penn State University and worked as a senior research chemist for DuPont before converting to Catholicism. She left her career to stay home with her children. In those years, she earned a M.A. in dogmatic theology and published five books on the integration of science and theology. Dr. Trasancos teaches online science and theology courses for Seton Hall University, Holy Apostles College and Seminary, and Belmont Abbey College and is a Fellow of the Word on Fire Institute. She is, at last, pursuing a second M.A. in systematic philosophy.ABSTRACTAn abortion is characterized by pro-choice advocates as a concern of personal autonomy, expressed most succinctly in Planned Parenthood v Casey (1992): “At the heart of liberty is the right to define one's own concept of existence, of meaning, of the universe, and of the mystery of human life. Beliefs about these matters could not define the attributes of personhood were they formed under compulsion of the State.” The abortion industry naturally exploits this narrative by politicizing in the name of human rights a procedure that denies those very rights. At the heart of these politics is an anti-personhood agenda that counts on the complicity of pro-life advocates. Such a shaky moral landscape became apparent during COVID when prominent Catholic leaders were promoting, under the principle of double-effect, immorally created vaccines as morally licit. This presentation will engage the moral dimension of an issue that pervades even those areas of our lives where we least expect it to surface.

In modo particolare sul rischio di morte in seguito all'assunzione della pillola Ru486.Cito e poi commento il comunicato della allora sottosegretaria alla salute Roccella:"Comunicato n. 115, del 12 maggio 2011Ru486: Una ragazza portoghese di sedici anni è morta dopo un aborto con la Ru486, per shock settico da Clostridium Sordellii, infezione finora diagnostica nei decessi da aborto medico solamente negli Stati Uniti. Ne hanno dato notizia studiosi portoghesi durante il 21° European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) che si è tenuto nei giorni scorsi a Milano.E' il primo caso europeo nel quale è stata accertata la presenza della rara ma letale infezione da Clostridium Sordellii. Le morti per aborto con Ru486 e prostaglandine salgono così a venti, a cui se ne sommano altre 12 per persone che avevano preso la Ru486 per “uso compassionevole”, cioè al di fuori di protocolli stabiliti: in tutto 32 morti accertate dopo l'assunzione di Ru486. Vanno anche ricordate altre due donne morte per aborto farmacologico solo con prostaglandine, cioè solo con il secondo farmaco associato alla pillola abortiva.Un recente studio australiano, pochi giorni fa, ha segnalato che le complicazioni dopo l'aborto medico sono molto più frequenti di quelle a seguito di aborto chirurgico, in base ai risultati di 7000 aborti effettuati con la Ru486 nel sud dell'Australia, confermando i dati già noti della letteratura scientifica.Raccomandiamo ancora una volta agli operatori del settore di seguire le linee guida ministeriali sull'aborto farmacologico, che prevedono che l'intera procedura venga eseguita in regime di ricovero ordinario, per salvaguardare al meglio la salute delle donne.Il Ministero della Salute segnalerà il caso portoghese di morte a seguito di aborto farmacologico all'EMA, l'agenzia di farmacovigilanza europea, chiedendo un supplemento di indagine e un aggiornamento sulle segnalazioni di decessi e complicanze. With the failure to properly test the alleged COVID-19 vaccines, the FDA has lost a lot of trust in the people's eyes. But this may not be the first time the FDA criminally approved a dangerous drug. The Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, along with others have filed suit against the Food and Drug Administration regarding its approval of the abortion drug Mifeprex. Their complaint claims that the FDA violated multiple federal laws and its own regulations when it first approved the drug, then again over the next three decades when it expanded its use. This case has not been heard by a court yet, but I want to take some time and evaluate the specifics in the complaint to see if they pass constitutional muster. This will also give us a framework by which to evaluate the court's decision when it is published.

Ai vertici di quello che fu il "glorioso" Partito Comunista Italiano, arriva una leader dai tratti antitetici a tutto ciò che è tradizionale. La Schlein ha tre cittadinanze, la diremmo cittadina del mondo, negazione della Patria. Si dichiara paladina degli LGBT+, negazione della natura. E' plenipotenziaria di tutti i diritti immaginabili - utero in affitto, libera cannabis, pillola abortiva Ru486 gratis, adozione da parte delle coppie gay, eutanasia, aborto - insomma l'individualismo libertario più radicale, negazione di ogni identità. Viene votata, da non tesserata, a segretaria del PD, da molti non tesserati al partito, gli uomini qualunque dei 5Stelle, negazione di ogni appartenenza. Con la Schlein, i motivi dominanti della sinistra non saranno più i diritti sociali (lavoro, welfare) ma i diritti civili, in un quadro di precarietà ed instabilità sociale ed esistenziale, dato per acquisito.Nel 1943 Palmiro Togliatti torna in Italia dall'URSS, con un progetto condiviso e "benedetto" da Stalin. Un piano che prevede quanto, in effetti, accadrà successivamente: la partecipazione dei comunisti al governo Badoglio, il referendum tra monarchia e repubblica etc..., ma soprattutto calibrato, come lui stesso afferma: "per cambiare gli italiani nel modo di essere e di sentire", attraverso l'affermazione dell'egemonia culturale gramsciana ed il divieto della rivoluzione armata, surrogata da una lenta, progressiva e vincente occupazione di tutti gli spazi socioculturali. È il partito radicale di massa, l'obiettivo individuato da Togliatti che con la Schlein, si compie. Il dimenticato Augusto Del Noce in "Il Suicidio della Rivoluzione", aveva visto giusto anche perché il fine del marxleninismo è l'anarchia come modello politico e umano. Togliatti aveva spiegato bene che "il marxismo non è un dogma ma una guida per l'azione politica". Una parte dei militanti del PD non capiranno questa progressione, ma non dimentichiamo quel genio di Giorgio Gaber ed il suo "Qualcuno era Comunista". I motivi per far parte di quel partito erano i più eterogenei. Una eterogeneità che non fa problema ai 5S, evanescenti come sono, ma farà qualche problema ai cattocomunisti. I pronipoti di Don Sturzo, De Gasperi, Moro, Martinazzoli, come concilieranno la radicalizzazione del partito con la loro militanza? Ci sarà ancora posto per i cattolici nel Pd? Per alcuni il problema non c'è perché hanno già completato quel trasbordo ideologico che li ha transitati dalla fede cattolica ad una fede disincarnata, privatizzata, protestantizzata, approdando ad una chiesa pneumatica, che Papa PIO XII aveva previsto e condannato negli anni cinquanta. Per altri sarà più difficile sposare il loro progressismo cattolico con il radicalismo della Schlein, anche perché la linea ambientalista ed immigrazionista, acquisirà presto un inevitabile sapore religioso e quando la politica si eleva a religione diventa totalitarismo. Il PD si batterà per reintrodurre a pieno titolo il reddito di cittadinanza, sconfiggere il "malcostume" dell'obiezione di coscienza del personale sanitario sulla 194, combattere ogni obiezione alla ovvietà del relativismo in ogni campo. I cattocomunisti, dovranno decidere se diventare definitivamente i chierici della "nuova" chiesa globalista/ambientalista. La Schlein è nata a Lugano, figlia di due professori universitari, sorella di una diplomatica in carriera e di un matematico, è agiata, poliglotta, intellettuale e cosmopolita, esponente dell'alta borghesia progressista ed incarna il prototipo dell'oltredonna di Nietzsce, potrà stare vicino agli eredi di un'altra storia? La nuova segretari* è sponsorizzata dai capicorrente del Partito Democratico, Franceschini, Zingaretti, Cuperlo, Orlando, Bersani e Bettini e, udite, udite, da Romano Prodi, ultimo elemento, questo, che fa comprendere le delicate parole che Mons. Corrado Lorefice, vescovo di Palermo, le ha dedicato in un intervista sul Giornale di Sicilia. Il cattocomunista Beppe Fioroni è già fuori dal partito, ma ad una certa età... si sa... certe emozioni...! E tutti gli altri? Alla fine il cattocomunista medio, dopo decenni di militanza rivoluzionaria, è diventato evanescente nelle idee e numericamente irrilevante e trascurabile in quanto elettore. Quasi certamente finirà con il transitare l'impegno politico, dai diritti sociali ai diritti civili, dissolvendosi nel partito radicale di massa. "Serve un maggiore sforzo politico e diplomatico dell'Ue insieme agli alleati e in seno alla Comunità internazionale", per arrivare "ad un cessate il fuoco e all'avvio di una Conferenza di pace". Con questo programma Elly Schlein si appresta ad affrontare l'assemblea nazionale del prossimo 12 marzo. Un programma che porta voti da sinistra ma che ne sposta altri verso il centro. Ma è proprio così? O anche in Italia serpeggia un «mainstream» sostanzialmente, magari subdolamente avverso alla cultura ed anche alla sola presenza cattolica nel sociale? O anche qui si cerca di mettere il bavaglio a chiunque non voglia uniformarsi al coro e preferisca ragionare con la propria testa, col proprio cuore e con la propria fede? Possibile che quelle censure, quei boicottaggi, quelle aggressioni, di cui tante volte diamo conto su Corrispondenza Romana, non avvengano soltanto all'estero, bensì anche qui, nella democraticissima, civilissima, "cattolicissima" Italia?Quanto accaduto negli ultimi anni indurrebbe a risponder di sì a questa serie di interrogativi, inquietanti certo, ma corroborati dai fatti.LA MARCIA NAZIONALE PER LA VITA (2014)Ciò che disturba molto è la presenza nel sociale del mondo e dei valori cattolici, specie quando significativa. Come dimenticare quando nel 2014, a Roma, la giunta di Centrosinistra dell'allora sindaco Ignazio Marino, che pur si definiva cattolico, negò la richiesta di patrocinio alla Marcia nazionale per la Vita col risibile pretesto della mancanza di fondi...? Niente wc chimici, niente volontari della Protezione Civile e neanche la distribuzione di bottigliette d'acqua ai partecipanti, che anzi han dovuto ripulire le strade dopo l'evento. Solo poche settimane dopo lo stesso primo cittadino accordò invece il patrocinio al Gay Pride tenutosi nella Capitale e partecipò anche personalmente alla manifestazione, facendo esporre in Campidoglio ed in tutte le sedi municipali le bandiere arcobaleno. Due pesi e due misure vergognosamente ideologiche, ignobili ed inaccettabili.E che dire dell'edizione 2019 sempre della Marcia nazionale per la Vita, seguita in diretta dall'emittente americana Ewtn, ma ignorata totalmente dalla televisione di Stato, la Rai? Si trattò di una censura scandalosa contro il maggior evento pro-life italiano, che pur fu in grado di richiamare a Roma migliaia di persone. Questo provocò il lancio di una petizione online di protesta, dimostratasi in grado di raccogliere in pochi giorni migliaia di adesioni.Nel 2015 nuovo episodio di boicottaggio: niente patrocinio del Comune di Mogliano e niente comunicazione ai genitori degli alunni da parte dei dirigenti scolastici in merito ad un dibattito promosso dall'A.Ge.-Associazione Genitori sul tema dell'educazione all'affettività nelle scuole. Evidentemente c'è chi è convinto di poter infischiarsene di regole e regolamenti, quando si tratti di ostacolare e discriminare i fautori del no all'ideologia gender.ASSOCIAZIONE MEDICI CATTOLICI ITALIANI (2016) E MANIFESTI CONTRO LA PILLOLA RU486 (2020)Nel 2016 nel mirino è finito il diritto all'obiezione di coscienza all'aborto: il Consiglio d'Europa ha accolto il ricorso presentato in merito dalla Cgil, atto definito «sconcertante» ed «assolutamente intollerabile» dall'Associazione Medici Cattolici Italiani e dalla Federazione europea delle Associazioni mediche cattoliche: «È intollerabile che la democrazia diventi demagogia - hanno scritto in una memorabile nota - L'obiezione di coscienza è un diritto lecito e doveroso. Il medico non può compiere, contro la propria coscienza, azioni di soppressione della vita. Occorre ricordare che nessuna autorità politica può imporre ai medici ed agli operatori della Sanità azioni ritenute non necessarie e dannose; tanto meno nessuna legge può imporre loro di compiere azioni non condivise. Gli operatori sanitari sono chiamati dalla professione e dalla propria deontologia a curare e sostenere la vita sin dal concepimento e pretendono di essere rispettati nella propria autonomia. L'obiezione di coscienza è un diritto fondamentale della persona, costituzionalmente tutelato dall'art. 9 della Convenzione Europea dei Diritti dell'Uomo, per cui l'intervento del Consiglio d'Europa si configura palesemente come violazione di una norma costituzionale e merita censura da parte dei cittadini europei».V'è poi tutta l'azione di censura operata nel 2020 con la rimozione dei manifesti contro la pillola Ru486 già regolarmente affissi a Ravenna, a Milano e a Bergamo (circa quest'ultima, da due anni il sindaco, Giorgio Gori, non risponde all'interrogazione, presentata in merito dal consigliere comunale orobico Filippo Bianchi, che definisce tale prolungato ed ingiustificato silenzio «un'omissione di atti d'ufficio»).UNPLANNED, LA VERA STORIA DI ABBY JOHNSON (2022)Passiamo al mondo dei media: inutile soffermarci sulla derisione, sullo scherno, sull'aggressione, sull'ostilità, di cui nei talk show ed in molti programmi "d'informazione" presunta sono oggetto e bersaglio la morale ed i valori cattolici, poiché gli esempi sono per quantità, qualità e frequenza tanto numerosi, da non necessitare nemmeno di spiegazioni: a chiunque, accendendo il televisore, sarà prima o poi capitato d'imbattersi in casi di questo tipo. Ma anche nel cinema, benché ambiente più composto ed ovattato, non sono un mistero le difficoltà incontrate da due pellicole in particolare ovvero la prima nel 2013, Cristiada, sulle violente persecuzioni patite negli Anni Venti del secolo scorso dai cattolici messicani a causa del governo anticlericale e massonico del presidente Plutarco Elías Calles e la seconda nel 2021, Unplanned, che racconta la vera storia di Abby Johnson, ex- dipendente di una delle cliniche della multinazionale Planned Parenthood, divenuta pro-life convinta dopo aver scoperto cosa realmente accada, al di là delle menzogne, durante un aborto. Entrambi i film, pur potendo contare su cast d'eccezione e sull'impatto emotivo di vicende autentiche, benché "scomode", sono state rifiutate, boicottate, ignorate in molti, troppi casi, nelle sale e sulla stampa. Ad Unplanned, oltre tutto, il Ministero dei Beni Culturali ha inflitto un'assurda censura, vietandone la visione ai minori di 14 anni, negli stessi giorni in cui al Festival di Venezia veniva premiata col Leone d'Oro una pellicola filo-abortista, assolutamente frutto di fantasia. A 14 anni, a quanto pare, in Italia si può abortire, ma non guardare un film, che spieghi cosa sia davvero l'aborto e quali le sue conseguenze.UNIVERSITARI PER LA VITA (2022)Venendo ai nostri giorni è possibile annoverare tra i fatti di (triste) cronaca la Sala della Promoteca in Campidoglio negata a fine ottobre ai promotori pro-family di un convegno sui temi della disforia di genere e della riassegnazione sessuale; la vile aggressione perpetrata lo scorso 20 ottobre da una ventina di membri del Collettivo femminista di Scienze Politiche dell'Università La Sapienza di Roma ai danni di cinque studenti dell'associazione Universitari per la Vita, "rei" soltanto di aver volantinato contro l'aborto nel piazzale antistante l'ingresso dell'Ateneo, peraltro con regolare autorizzazione della Questura (riprovevole episodio, che fa il bis con quanto avvenuto nell'ottobre del 2018 nella medesima Università); l'esclusione dell'associazione ProVita&Famiglia onlus dal Consiglio delle Donne di Bergamo, organo consultivo del consiglio comunale. La sua richiesta di adesione è stata bocciata con 11 no, 6 sì e 16 astensioni: un fatto senza precedenti, un esito fortemente voluto dalle Sinistre, una decisione «molto grave - come ha commentato Filippo Bianchi, consigliere comunale di Fratelli d'Italia - Il Consiglio delle Donne, presieduto e partecipato a maggioranza dalle Sinistre, si dimostra ancora una volta strumento politico di censura, che non tollera il confronto ed il pluralismo, ma soprattutto discriminatorio nei confronti dei soggetti e delle iniziative a difesa dei valori della vita e della famiglia». Già nel febbraio 2019, però, sempre a Bergamo, all'ultimo minuto, il Consiglio delle Donne con un solo voto in più (16 sì, 15 no, 1 astenuto) escluse il presidente di FederVita Lombardia, Paolo Picco, dal novero dei relatori al convegno «Nascere a Bergamo: presente e prospettive future» con una motivazione, a dir poco, discriminatoria e aberrante: per non rendere cioè «il Consiglio delle Donne ostaggio dell'azione di conservatori e anti-abortisti, portatori di una visione retrograda e svilente della donna e dei suoi diritti», come dichiarato dalle ultrafemministe di Non una di meno, sigla che peraltro non faceva nemmeno parte di detto organismo consultivo del consiglio comunale orobico, da cui si dimisero a quel punto, prendendone le distanze, molti membri, non condividendo più il modo di procedere, dichiaratamente ideologico.Patrocini e spazi negati, norme e regolamenti ignorati, manifesti strappati, eventi "silenziati", film censurati, boicottaggi, aggressioni, relatori "scomodi" cancellati, organismi pubblici vietati contro qualsiasi regola, zero copertura massmediatica... I casi sono due: o in Italia la democrazia è schiava di un'ideologia contraria alla vita, alla famiglia ed alla fede cattolica, il che sarebbe molto grave, configurando una situazione di dittatura de facto, di odio etico e religioso: oppure è la democrazia in quanto tale ad essere malata, avvelenata, corrotta dal cancro di un'ideologia onnipervasiva, il che sarebbe ancora più grave, ponendo un serio problema istituzionale. In entrambi i casi, possiamo davvero dire che in Italia morale, valori ed ideali cattolici non siano vittime di una persecuzione reale, sia pur fatta coi guanti di velluto (ovviamente rosso...)?

In Italia, la battaglia per la legalizzazione dell'aborto, ottenuta dalle lotte femministe con la legge 194/1978, ha affermato una cultura differente della sessualità e della maternità. Ma ancora oggi non tutte le donne possono scegliere di abortire con dignità. L'obiezione di coscienza negli ospedali pubblici, la limitata e quasi nulla somministrazione della RU486, lo smantellamento dei consultori pubblici, rendono umiliante, faticosa, a volte addirittura impossibile, l'interruzione volontaria di gravidanza nei termini di legge e con le tutele dell'assistenza sanitaria pubblica. La situazione diventa ancora più difficile, penosa e rischiosa nei casi di aborto terapeutico, circostanza in cui la valenza punitiva dell'obiezioni di coscienza raggiunge il suo apice. La crociata fondamentalista dei movimenti per la vita va avanti da quando in Italia si è legalizzato l'aborto ed è animata dall'odio per le donne. L'obiettivo non è la difesa della “vita”, un principio sacro quanto astratto, ma criminalizzare le donne per sottrarre loro potere e controllo sulla riproduzione e trasformarle quindi in strumento procreativo. Fare un figlio per obbligo è violenza, la maternità imposta è un retaggio proprietario sul corpo femminile che vorremmo superato nella storia e nella cultura. La strada da fare è ancora lunga, non solo in Italia. Sono tanti i paesi nel mondo in cui l'aborto rimane illegale e produce morte e violenza e quelli dove le leggi ottenute con le lotte delle donne sono minacciate. Da ora fino a maggio in Irlanda, Argentina, Polonia si giocano partite importanti per l'autodeterminazione delle nostre vite. Su questo terreno Non Una Di Meno continua la battaglia rilanciata dello sciopero femminista in un momento di forte connessione transnazionale tra movimenti delle donne. Riprendendo il motto delle femministe argentine, “Vogliamo educazione sessuale per decidere, la contraccezione per non abortire, l'aborto per non morire”, anche in Italia Non Una Di Meno riapre la battaglia contro l'obiezione di coscienza e la piena introduzione della RU486, per il diritto alla maternità consapevole e tutelata, per il welfare e il diritto alla salute universali, per una sessualità libera, felice e senza obblighi.

In this episode of Life Matters, Commissioner Johnston explains the actual meaning and significance of Dobbs, the recent and powerful decision of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. The Dobbs Supreme Court decision does not ban a single abortion. What it simply does is give back to each state government what the Roe v. Wade decision took away, the ability for each state to practice its duty and “compelling state interest to protect the lives of the innocent” within their own borders. In Roe, this constitutional duty and responsibility was instead given to one individual in the case of abortion - an individual abortionist.  Brian includes the comments of former Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who agreed that the real effect of Roe was not to give women rights, they had to get permission. All authority, and all rights were to be in the hands of abortionists alone. When the individual abortionist makes the decision to kill a particular child, he is assuming an authority which denies that child due process of law. In this act of intentional medical killing, the abortionist assumes the responsibility of an executioner, which government has only given such executioner authority to the powers of the state. And the state in turn, must exercise this authority very carefully because it has an overarching duty to make sure that the innocent themselves are protected from being killed. That is the purpose of having just law and that purpose and authority was denied to states. The Dobbs decision gave states the right to protect the innocent once again. Now the battle comes to each state and California will be the greatest challenge. Getting a Constitutional Amendment on the state-wide ballot in California usually costs multiple millions of dollars and most attempts fail. California Democrats have skipped that. They don't need money. In the Sacramento Capitol they simply have their way.  The Democrats own the process. The abortion lobby owns the Democrats. Because they have a supermajority of the legislature, on June 28, 2022, they qualified a Reproductive Freedom Constitutional Amendment for the fall ballot. It was "fast tracked." It was easy. Democrats who dissent are simply punished... Yes, it is like that.  The measure simply inserts the following into the State Constitution:  “The state shall not deny or interfere with an individual's reproductive freedom in their most intimate decisions, which includes their fundamental right to choose to have an abortion and their fundamental right to choose or refuse contraceptives. This section is intended to further the constitutional right to privacy guaranteed by Section 1, and the constitutional right to not be denied equal protection guaranteed by Section 7. Nothing herein narrows or limits the right to privacy or equal protection.”  But the expensive, months-long signature process is skipped. This is when citizens start to hear and consider a debate. But it is skipped. In November, an already ignorant public will vote on ‘reproductive freedom.' They will be guided by a clearly biased media.   The media is not asking basic questions about the details of either “Reproductive Rights' or the new, tourist-abortion industry Gavin Newsom and the state legislature have now set up. Many states will require parents to be notified before a minor gets an abortion, and nearly 1/3 of abortions are done on minors. Will Gavin Newsom and your tax dollars be flying minors across state lines for secret abortions? Crickets.  Roe v. Wade falsely suggested that there were limits on abortion... but the famous definition of 'Health' as including, psychological, sociological, and matter that might impact the patient in view of the abortionist's opinion permitted late term abortions even if there were nothing wrong with either mother or child!   California enforces no regulation or accountability for individual abortions. Every other medical procedure requires very specific informed consent before that operation is performed on you. That's for the safety of the patient. Abortion is the only medical procedure in California that does not require the specific explanation and description of the medical risk to the patient.  RU486 chemical abortions are now very common. But women are not told how it functions. This is a double-barrel shotgun of artificial steroids which powerfully impact the woman's body with a stunning chemical slam. These chemicals alter her metabolic functions in a jolt. This risky shock to her system is what expels the child from her body.   Sometimes that child is alive and squirming. Often the mother is alone when it finally hits. And she is bleeding profusely. There is no requirement to explain these details to these women. But the state legislature wants to offer it not just to Californians, but apparently also to minor girls who live across state lines! And they want it protected in the Constitution.

Pill abortions usually involve two drugs. The first, mifepristone (also called RU486) starves and suffocates the baby. After mifepristone is taken, the mother’s production of progesterone is blocked. This hormone is needed to stabilize the lining of the uterus. As the uterine lining breaks down, the baby’s flow of nourishment and oxygen is cut off, starving and suffocating her. This episode examines the use of RU-486, otherwise known as chemical abortion branded as Early Options. Chemical abortion is used to kill human beings in the womb in the first trimester of life. «Un passo avanti nella libertà delle donne». No, una «scelta irresponsabile» che lascia alle donne «la libertà di essere sole». Scatena polemiche molto dure la scelta del ministro della Salute, Roberto Speranza, di cambiare le linee guida sull’uso della pillola abortiva. Mai più obbligo di ricovero per assumere la Ru486, a meno che la donna non sia «in ansia». Slittamento in avanti di due settimane del limite consentito per interrompere la gravidanza, non più fino alla settima settimana, ma fino alla nona (da un articolo del Corriere della Sera di Virginia Piccolillo del 9 agosto 2020 dal titolo "Pillola abortiva, stop al ricovero. È polemica sulle nuove norme"). Roberto Vacca e Claudio Coppini hanno chiesto un parere su questo delicato e controverso argomento etico a Saverio Scuccimarri, decano della Facoltà avventista di teologia di Firenze. Addirittura, il nostro Ministero della Salute ha emanato una circolare in cui raccomanda di limitare gli interventi chirurgici ai soli casi non rinviabili; tra gli interventi indifferibili è però incluso l'aborto, cioè l'omicidio dell'innocente nel grembo materno.Tuttavia, come recita un bel detto popolare, il diavolo fa le pentole ma non i coperchi: succede che in Italia abortire è diventato quasi impossibile visto che la crisi del Covid-19 ha mandato in tilt la rodata macchina degli aborti di stato. Secondo Silvana Agatone, ginecologa e presidente della Laiga si tratta di una tragedia nella tragedia: «So di ragazze che si sono dovute spostare da Torino a Caserta per poter abortire. Donne ormai vicine alla scadenza delle dodici settimane che vengono respinte da tutti i centri. Ci sono consultori che non rilasciano più i certificati, nonostante il Ministero della Salute abbia specificato che l'interruzione di gravidanza rientri negli interventi indifferibili, molte strutture hanno invece equiparato gli aborti agli interventi di routine e fermato gli accessi».Le testimonianze sono drammatiche, continua la presidente dell'associazione nata a difesa della sciagurata legge 194, secondo la quale sono tante le donne costrette a viaggiare di notte e a violare le ordinanze per recarsi ad abortire in uno dei pochi ospedali disposti ad accettarle.ABORTI IN LARGA PARTE BLOCCATIIn effetti, malgrado l'aborto volontario venga considerato un diritto inalienabile della donna e si cerchi in tutti i modi di difenderlo e finanche di incentivarlo, "solamente" il 64 percento degli ospedali italiani ha reparti dedicati all'applicazione della legge 194, con un'obiezione di coscienza che supera il 70 percento di medici, anestesisti e paramedici. Cosicché, è stato sufficiente che alcune strutture chiudessero le porte alle "pazienti" per mandare al collasso un sistema che non è così solido come appare.Anche gli aborti farmacologici sono in larga parte bloccati perché richiedono tre giorni di ricovero ospedaliero e dunque l'occupazione di letti. Non a caso, i ben noti Roberto Saviano e Laura Boldrini, con una lettera aperta al ministro Speranza, al presidente Conte e all'Aifa, missiva sottoscritta tra gli altri da Marco Cappato e l'ex ministro Livia Turco, hanno chiesto misure urgenti per garantire le cosiddette interruzioni volontarie della gravidanza, privilegiando la procedura farmacologica per non occupare i posti letto negli ospedali.Nello specifico, i nostri chiedono di allungare i tempi per l'aborto con la Ru486 fino a nove settimane e prevedere una procedura di aborto da remoto con la telemedicina (sic!). Insomma, la situazione è talmente grave che secondo il direttore sanitario della clinica Sant'Anna di Caserta, dove si sta assistendo ad una migrazione straordinaria di donne provenienti da altre regioni per poter effettuare l'aborto, «il sistema che assicura l'applicazione della legge 194 è ormai così depauperato che basta poco per mettere in crisi tutto e lasciare le donne sempre più sole».UN PROVVIDENZIALE DISSERVIZIOOvviamente, si tratta di un provvidenziale disservizio visto che permette di non perdere vite umane innocenti, di evitare che molte donne si trasformino in assassine dei propri figli e di non sprecare risorse importanti.Ma le buone notizie non finiscono qui: anche l'odiosa pratica della fecondazione assistita subisce l'effetto Covid-19. Infatti, un documento congiunto del Centro nazionale trapianti e del registro PMA dell'Istituto superiore di sanità raccomanda ai centri che effettuano la procreazione artificiale di sospendere tutti i trattamenti non urgenti, dal momento che l'aumento esponenziale dei casi di positività al virus accresce il rischio di contaminazione dei pazienti infertili e del personale dei centri di medicina della riproduzione. Inoltre, i trattamenti comportano la necessità di occupare posti letto, sale chirurgiche e/o terapie intensive che vanno invece utilizzati per affrontare l'emergenza sanitaria in atto. Lo stop alla PMA potrebbe protrarsi fino a maggio e ciò significa che 30/35 mila cicli riproduttivi non verrebbero eseguiti, secondo le stime del presidente della Società Italiana della Riproduzione Umana (Siru). Ciò significa che a causa del coronavirus non verranno prodotti in laboratorio decine e decine di migliaia di embrioni umani, la maggior parte dei quali è destinata a morte certa o, ancora peggio, ad essere sottoposti alle abominevoli procedure di crioconservazione.C'è da augurarsi che l'emergenza coronavirus cessi in fretta, visti gli enormi danni che sta causando al tessuto sociale italiano, europeo e mondiale, sotto tutti i punti di vista. C'è al contempo da augurarsi che il lock-down su aborto e fecondazione assistita prosegua il più possibile e che soprattutto riesca a mettere in crisi, speriamo irreversibile, le pseudo libertà rivendicate dai gruppi più oltranzisti, i quali non hanno nemmeno la dignità di fermarsi di fronte ad una emergenza come quella a cui stiamo assistendo. Nota di BastaBugie: nell'articolo seguente dal titolo "Francia: Covid-19, il ministro rende più facile abortire" rende nota la dichiarazione del ministro della Salute francese che ha definito «inquietante» il calo nel numero degli aborti. Noi pensiamo che invece sia inquietante la dichiarazione di questo ministro della salute... E poi che ministro della salute? Certo non della salute dei bambini.Ecco l'articolo completo pubblicato su Corrispondenza Romana il 2 Aprile 2020:«Nulla da eccepire in linea di principio sul prolungare di due settimane il termine per l'esecuzione di un'interruzione volontaria di gravidanza farmacologica a casa, a causa dell'epidemia da Covid-19»: lo ha dichiarato il ministro della Salute francese Olivier Véran al deputato socialista Laurence Rossignol, che gli ha posto la questione con una petizione, in cui è stato chiesto espressamente un'analoga estensione di due settimane non solo per gli aborti farmacologici, bensì anche per quelli chirurgici, detti anche crudamente «per aspirazione».Il ministro ha anzi definito «inquietante» il calo nel numero degli aborti effettuati nelle scorse settimane, pertanto, visibilmente preoccupato e pur precisando di dover risolvere prima alcune «questioni tecniche», ha aggiunto «assolutamente fuori questione che l'epidemia da Covid-19 limiti il diritto all'aborto», non solo dunque da confermare, ma altresì da incoraggiare.Incredibile come, anche in tempi di Coronavirus e ben altro cui pensare, la cultura di morte riesca comunque ad avanzare inesorabile in Europa: i politici di molti Paesi membri dell'Unione, ormai, considerano prioritario ammazzare vite umane nel grembo materno. Accade nel Regno Unito, accade in Belgio, accade in Italia, ora accade anche in Francia, dove non solo i politici, purtroppo, ma anche i ginecologi in particolare e la classe medica più in generale hanno chiesto espressamente al governo con un proprio appello di garantire l'accesso all'aborto, benchéin piena crisi sanitaria. Anzi, soprattutto in piena crisi sanitaria, come precisa la petizione ricorrendo alla solita antilingua: «Durante l'epidemia, le interruzioni volontarie di gravidanza farmacologiche devono essere incoraggiate e facilitate, in tutto garantendo la libera scelta delle donne».Per questo il ministro Véran ha dichiarato di aver chiesto ai suoi servizi di incentivare il ricorso al teleconsulto, così da render possibile celermente un parere medico prima e dopo l'assunzione della pillola abortiva alle donne in dolce attesa. Le si è sempre definite così, almeno, ma oggi quell'aggettivo, «dolce» suona sinistro in coloro che, in realtà, stanno per trasformare quell'attesa in un incubo, anzi in una tragedia.

Il ginecologo radicale Silvio Viale ha commentato così le parole del leader della Lega Matteo Salvini sul tema dell'aborto. «Il pronto soccorso non è la soluzione a stili di vita incivili, ci sono donne che lo fanno sei volte,» aveva affermato il leghista. Il medico ha spiegato: «Solo il 2,3% delle donne fa 3 o più interruzioni volontarie di gravidanza e di solito sono anche quelle che hanno fatto più figli, mentre i 3/4 sono alla loro prima. Ridicola la polemica contro le donne straniere. Se è vero che fanno il 30% delle interruzioni, di cui il 40% dei Paesi dell’est, è altrettanto vero che il 22% dei nati ha almeno un genitore straniero. Condannare e punire le donne ed essere indulgenti con i maschi è tipico della misoginia. Quella misoginia ignorante che dieci anni fa faceva dire a Cota, che “la RU486 (la pillola abortiva, ndr) sarebbe marcita negli armadi”, e che oggi spinge Salvini a prendersela con il 2% delle donne, come male assolute».

In this episode of Life Matters, Commissioner Johnston explains exactly what happened in the closing days of the California state legislative session of 2019.  Brian reminds listeners that if they really care about human life and consider themselves to be pro-life they need to take the time to look into how laws are made because it is the laws that are designed to protect innocent lives. Once Roe v. Wade is overturned each of the states will have an opportunity to again protect innocent lives.  Senate Bill 24, which authorizes the distribution of the chemical abortifacient RU 486 in all state university and state college campuses, was passed in the wee hours of the final evening of the session.  Brian reminds us that the old saying “if anyone likes either sausages or laws they should never watch either one being made.” What this means is laws are often made in a very uncomely, inappropriate manner and it is up to us to watch and hold accountable, lawmakers who make this mess.  Brian also reminds us that we should not be disappointed and simply walk away or use the empty phrases “that you can’t legislate morality,” because laws are in fact the morality of a nation, and those nations will be judged for their laws and morals.  Will they protect the vulnerable innocent or will they ipenly kill innocent human lives?  Every election allows us, as citizens, to have a voice in the process of lawmaking but also in the local community - especially down to the school board level where some of those most important community decisions are made.

If it weren't so jarring and tragic, the contradictory laws and language tolerated in our country about abortion would be laughable. On the one hand, we prosecute anyone who harms a pregnant woman and causes her to lose her baby, sometimes even charging them with murder. Meanwhile, that same woman could legally have her unborn child killed with no consequences just down the street. We have baby announcements—not fetus announcements—and yet, most people who call themselves “pro-choice” insist on referring to the victim of abortion as something other than a baby. According to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a pregnant woman who is “abortion-minded” is not a mother, but apparently any other pregnant woman is. And then there's miscarriage—a tragedy familiar to millions of women in this country, as well as their families. In her memoir, former first lady Michelle Obama tells about a miscarriage she suffered, and how she'd grieved as if she'd lost a child. Because of course, she had. Recently, NPR highlighted Mrs. Obama's story and others like it in a segment on “demystifying miscarriage.” It's a powerful hour of radio, filled with women describing the heart-wrenching grief of losing a baby. One described it as a “loss of a secret companion,” and others talked of their longing to protect their tiny children, even after they were gone. Tragically, our culture and our laws de-legitimize the grief of miscarriage, communicating to mothers, indirectly and sometimes directly, that it's no big deal. Nearly all of the mothers interviewed by NPR described how few people seemed to fully appreciate what they had gone through, even shrugging off their tragedies as if they hadn't really lost something or someone precious. Incredibly, NPR even tried to make the case that restrictions on abortion have harmed women who've suffered miscarriages! This government-funded outlet ignored the government-funded industry that dehumanizes the unborn and treats their deaths as no big deal. In fact, a recent documentary on another government-funded media outlet, PBS, goes to even greater lengths to normalize abortion, even comparing it to miscarriage as a way of convincing viewers that it's no big deal. Who's minimizing miscarriage, again? In the documentary, a mother at a Philadelphia “women's center” is filmed taking the abortion pill RU486 while a doctor describes the twins she is carrying as “pregnancy tissue.” Medical abortions are an increasingly common early-term form of abortion that are carried out entirely with medication. “A medical abortion is very similar to inducing a miscarriage,” explains the doctor, later describing the “miscarriage symptoms” her patient will experience when she takes the second drug to expel her baby. What an insult to the millions of women who know what a miscarriage means. Disturbingly, this mother made it clear she knew what abortion means: “What I hope I feel,” she said, “is a sense of peace...with these two beings that I've chosen not to bring into the world. Thank you for choosing me,” she tells them. “I'm honored to be given this gift of life. And also, I can't do it right now.” The attempt to sentimentalize abortion isn't just misguided and wrong. It's an insult to every woman who has suffered the unchosen loss of miscarriage. More than that, it demonstrates a culpable knowledge—on the part of this woman, PBS, NPR, and everyone else involved in this industry of death—of what really happens when a doctor ends a pregnancy by abortion. That muffling gauze of medical euphemisms cannot change what is true. Even abortive women themselves, some who are stricken with grief, can't suppress it either. Our prayers to end this casual destruction of life should include, on behalf of our whole nation, an acknowledgement: “Father, forgive us, for we know what we're doing.”

Brian dedicates this episode to specific issues within California in April, 2019. SB-24 is the reintroduction of last year‘s SB-320, a measure which would require every state college and university to distribute the abortion drug RU486. RU486 is not a “morning after pill.”  It is a chemical, an artificial steroid designed to alter a young mother’s body - taken only after she has missed her first two periods. There is clearly a young, growing child in her womb. The first part of the regimen causes the mother’s body to shut down any nutrition going to her uterus. It is designed to literally wither the child within the womb, but may not cause death. The second regimen forces all parts of the child in her uterus to be expelled spontaneously.  The woman may not know exactly when that will happen. It is a grotesque and very personal form of abortion.  The first weekend in April also marks the distribution of a new film, Unplanned, the story of  Abby Johnson’s escape from the clutches of Planned Parenthood. She had been the youngest Planned Parenthood administrator in the corporation’s existence. The film, coincidentally, vividly shows an RU 486 abortion. It is an extremely unpleasant and emotionally devastating portion of the film. Another measure introduced in Sacramento is Assembly Bill 624, which would require every student identification card in California to include the phone number of sexual and reproductive health counseling lines - that is Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion agencies. It applies to all students in public schools but it also applies to charter, private and religious middle schools and high schools as well as colleges. It is a sweeping mandate on all students in all environments.  This attitude of super-imposition, even on the voters and concerned Californians who may disagree with government policy, was reflected as well in an alarming declaration of Governor Gavin Newsom.  The governor, who had said he respected the votes of Californians regarding the death penalty, instead made a declaration that - based on his own power and position - he would defy their decision made at the ballot box.  He single-handedly prohibited any use of the death penalty in California. Thankfully, there is some discussion of bringing such a sweeping act of Fiat to the courts as it clearly violates both the principles of democracy and plebiscite as well as the functioning office of the governor.

This is an important update on Senate Bill 320.  Senate Bill 320 would mandated that in California state colleges and universities young women be given RU486 the abortifacient drug. This is not a morning after pill.  This drug is only taken when the woman knows that she's pregnant and the child is well along. It attacks woman's body first by preventing it from giving any more nutrition to that child.  Only then does the child die.  It results in a spontaneous miscarriage when that young woman can least control of the situation. She sees the baby. She sees the clots of blood.  It's extremely unpleasant.  Once a woman has had this she does not want another one. But, with your tax money, we pay for it.  Ask your state senators to vote “No” on Senate Bill 320.

Today we are talking about an insidious drug - RU486. We're not talking about the morning after pill. The morning after pill has been marketed as kind of a backup contraception. It can be an abortifacient if conception has taken place, but primarily the morning after pill is designed to prevent conception so it's only taken when sex has already happened or shortly thereafter. RU486 is NOT contraceptive in nature. RU486 is only taken when a woman is pregnant. In fact, it can only be taken after the child is somewhat developed. The child has to be at least six or seven weeks old and doctors will insist that a woman be further along in her pregnancy in order for this drug to really kill the baby.  A lot of abortionists refer to use of RU486 as medical abortion and that's a little bit ironic because abortions that are done by a doctor would be medical. What they're trying to imply is a distinction between the use of this drug RU486 as a medicine and surgical abortion. But, as you can tell in the language game, it's misleading to call RU486 a medical abortion. It really should be called chemical abortion because this is not medicinal. RU486 is a very powerful steroid. It's a chemical that attacks the mother's body first and after doing so then the child dies in the womb because the child doesn't get nutrition from the mother anymore. Brian Johnston and Ashley McPartlin discuss legislation introduced for the two-year session of the California legislature 2017 2018 Brian gives background on the nature of legislation; it is simply being ideas that are enforced. There is a critical need for pro-life individuals to be aware of, and comfortable in the realm of ideas. If you are not from California, the discussion is pertinent to all states, as California like every other state, has a two-year, two-house (bicameral) legislature (except for Nebraska which is a unicameral legislature). The United States Congress on the federal level also elects in 2 year cycles. Every election year we, as citizens, elect those who will look at ideas and decide whether or not they should become law. We as citizens must also look at those ideas, as well as at the individuals we hire (elect) to make such decisions. Several dangerous ideas have been submitted to the California legislature. One is SB 562 which would entrust all health decisions and their financing to all California's citizens to the state of California itself. This is known as ‘single-payer’ healthcare. In every jurisdiction where it has been implemented it results in rationing and denial of treatment for those individuals that government bureaucrats have determined should not get any more healthcare. In addition, in California all abortion services would be funded without limit. This is a very bad bill. Brian and Ashley discuss the implications of collectivist medicine as it has been expressed in Canada, the UK, Russia and other collectivist systems. It always results in rationing and inferior medicine for the masses. Citizens in such countries have only gotten good treatment for serious illness when they engage in what is known as medical tourism. Buffalo, New York is one city that has enjoyed the financial benefit of Canadians seeking better healthcare and avoidance of the infamous medical “queue.” In Canada you must wait months to see specialists. Senate Bill 309 will establish a “Celebrate Choice” license plate that the state of California would distribute via the DMV. It also creates a fund that would give the money raised from these plates to abortion providers. This would be the first such "pro-choice plate" in the nation. Twenty-seven other states have “Celebrate Life” license plates. SB 320 would mandate that state colleges will distribute the abortifacient pill RU486 to students through their health system. There are extensive issues to this abortifacient. This is not a “morning after pill” or a contraceptive. It is only used when a child is known to be present. It is extremely dangerous for the young mother as it attacks her body first in order to get at the child. This has been slowed, and has now become a two-year bill. SB 481 would allow nursing homes to declare vulnerable, conscious patients, who are not terminal, to be incapacitated and then allow the administrators to withdraw all sustenance and care resulting in their death. In England this was referred to as the “Liverpool Pathway to Death.” It was so horrific that the UK parliament banned the practice. Senator Pan’s Bill SB 481 would allow the practice to continue and would offer legal protection for medical facilities that killed their patients through this form of intentional medical neglect. Senate Bill 743 gives even more funding to Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry in expectation of federal funds that are going to be cut off by the Trump administration. Senate Constitutional Amendment 7 by Senator Moorlach would cease the funding of the embryonic stem cell research measure passed by the voters which gives $6 billion to an industry that has had no successes. There has been extensive discussion of why embryonic stem cell research is a failure on our other programs. It is important to know these things. Please listen to those programs.

Brian Johnston, host of the Life Matters along with Roger Marsh, host of the Bottom Line, discuss several important pieces of California legislation. One is a bill which would mandate the distribution of the drug RU486 throughout the California college system. There are many many people including many pro-lifers, who regularly confuse RU486 with other pills taken, such as the morning after pill. The morning after pill is actually designed as a contraceptive, and is regularly included in rape kits issued at police stations in order to prevent the onset of pregnancy. RU486 is a dramatically different and a very lethal drug taken only after the woman is quite pregnant, usually she has missed at least one period. RU486 literally attacks the woman's body first. This very powerful artificial steroid is a combination of several drugs it causes the mothers body to no longer be a nurturing motherly body in spite of the fact that nature has designed her to dramatically change during pregnancy to fulfill her role as a mother. The drug causes her to cease providing nutrition and hydration to the child resting in her womb. Eventually, the child within her dies and is expelled as a miscarriage which she witnesses. Only then, upon seeing the head and arms and legs, will many women realize this is not merely a vague cluster of cells or a blob of tissue. Women in France, where this was designed, numerous women have died from the effects of RU486 on their own body. Many feminist authors have spoken out against RU486 because of the fact that it essentially attacks the woman's body in order to impact the body of the child. Giving this drug to young women in their late teens, who have no real understanding of the risks involved, is a very, very dangerous proposal. A second bill has to do with the other end of life and that is a bill authorizing nursing homes to, on their own recognizance, declare patients to be incompetent. This declaration empowers the nursing home to make any medical decisions they choose. What is not understood by many is that a very common medical decision, now being made for the sick, the terminally ill, seriously ill and even the disabled or otherwise medically dependent, is to simply end the life of that patient. Voluntary euthanasia through self-starvation and volunteer euthanasia through physician assistance (i.e. physician-assisted suicide), is already illegal in many places. The doctrine of substituted judgment allows a third-part to make that decision on behalf of a vulnerable patient. Thus, voluntary euthanasia has already moved to the status of non-voluntary euthanasia and is being practiced in California.  State Senator Pan has sponsored SB 481 which protects nursing homes and other medical facilities from action when they decide to deny essential care or even intentionally cause the death of one of their patients. While this is a challenge in California in the growing battle of ideas, it is now a challenge nation and world wide.

Chris O'Connor go in-depth on the Obama administration's recent ruling that Catholic institutions must violate their religious beliefs and conscience in providing healthcare to employees. They consider Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan's forthright remarks that show how extreme the administration's policies on religious freedom are; the three key points highlighted by the US bishops that define this issue; a series of common questions and answers to clarify what's at stake; the USCCB's point-by-point rebuttal of the White House's response; and a particularly egregious column by the Boston Globe's Joan Venocchi. 1st segment: Scot Landry and Fr. Chris O'Connor caught up with their activities of the past week and discussed today's topic. Fr. Chris said it's outrageous what the Obama administration has done with Health and Human Services regulations on the contraception mandate for health insurance coverage. Scot said they will get behind the soundbites and slogan and examine the issue in-depth. 2nd segment: Scot said Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan has been on the forefront of this issue and read from his recent op-ed: Religious freedom is the lifeblood of the American people, the cornerstone of American government. When the Founding Fathers determined that the innate rights of men and women should be enshrined in our Constitution, they so esteemed religious liberty that they made it the first freedom in the Bill of Rights. In particular, the Founding Fathers fiercely defended the right of conscience. George Washington himself declared: “The conscientious scruples of all men should be treated with great delicacy and tenderness; and it is my wish and desire, that the laws may always be extensively accommodated to them.” James Madison, a key defender of religious freedom and author of the First Amendment, said: “Conscience is the most sacred of all property.” Scarcely two weeks ago, in its Hosanna-Tabor decision upholding the right of churches to make ministerial hiring decisions, the Supreme Court unanimously and enthusiastically reaffirmed these longstanding and foundational principles of religious freedom. The court made clear that they include the right of religious institutions to control their internal affairs. Yet the Obama administration has veered in the opposite direction. It has refused to exempt religious institutions that serve the common good—including Catholic schools, charities and hospitals—from its sweeping new health-care mandate that requires employers to purchase contraception, including abortion-producing drugs, and sterilization coverage for their employees. He played the Cardinal's video statement from the USCCB website on this issue. Scot further explained the Cardinal-designate's point about recent Supreme Court cases and how even justices appointed by Obama are saying the administration's interpretation of the first amendment is getting more and more extreme. Fr. Chris said he hears priests refer to it as the persecution of faith. He said this isn't the Church's war on Obama, but the Church calling for the protection of the freedom of conscience. Scot and Fr. Chris pointed out that our rights do not come from the will of the government, but that they are ours by right of our birth and given to us by God himself and this has been emphasized by Pope Benedict XVI, quoting our own Declaration of Independence. Scot said the contraceptive mandate imposed on health plans by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) violates freedom of conscience, which is guaranteed by the First Amendment and several federal laws. The Bill of Rights says we are free to live by our religious beliefs. Forcing all of us to buy coverage for sterilization and contraceptives, including drugs that induce abortion, is a radical incursion into freedom of conscience. Never before in U.S. history has the federal government forced citizens to directly purchase what violates their beliefs. The Supreme Court recently declared in the Hosanna-Tabor case that the Constitution gives a priority place to Freedom of Religion. Scot and Fr. Chris discussed how this isn't just a Catholic issue. The first amendment protects, for example, Jewish nursing homes from having to serve pork in meals to non-Jewish residents. The government cannot force them to under the Constitution. Scot said HHS created this mandate after Congress asked it to develop a list of services all health plans should provide without co-pay. Instead of keeping with the prevention of diseases like breast cancer, sexually transmitted diseases and gestational diabetes, HHS took it upon itself to include sterilizations, contraceptives and abortion-inducing drugs. It treats pregnancy as an illness like breast cancer. Fr. Chris said we should talk about ensuring life, not discarding it. Obama is asking Catholics to support something that is radically against what we believe at the core of our faith. Scot said the US Conference of Catholic Bishops have been publishing numerous documents to help us understand this issue. One of the key points is that the mandate treats a healthy pregnancy as a disease in need of “prevention,” like breast cancer or AIDS (which other “preventive services” on HHS's list do legitimately seek to prevent). In reality, some of the mandated contraceptives are associated with an increased risk of AIDS, blood clots leading to stroke, and other ailments. Inclusion of these drugs places HHS's effort to prevent disease at war with itself. Militant pro-abortion people in the administration is trying to stick it to the Church. Fr. Chris said this is why he's so glad the USCCB is mobilizing and people are hearing what this is called for. Scot said the second point they make is that HHS wants abortifacient drugs to be required in every health plan. These drugs cause abortions and employers must subsidize abortion and individual Catholics must pay as part of their general premiums for everyone else's abortion drugs. Fr. Chris said the Church will not support this. Scot said the third point is that the rule violates religious freedom and rights of conscience. The rule has an incredibly narrow religious exemption for “religious employers” (not insurers, schools with student health plans, or families purchasing insurance). Even religious employers are exempt only if their purpose is to inculcate religious doctrine, they hire and serve mainly people of their own faith, and they qualify as a church or religious order in a very narrow part of the tax code. Most religious institutions providing health, educational or charitable services to others have no protection. The head of Catholic Charities USA said even Jesus wouldn't qualify for the exemption because he healed everyone regardless of their belief. Fr. Chris said the bill protects individual churches. Scot said it would not include churches if they have a food pantry that serves non-Catholics. It would force the Church to stop providing public services. Fr. Chris said institutions that don't buy in are threatened with fines and those fines could bankrupt them. It's as if the Obama administration wants to put Catholic charitable organizations out of business. 3rd segment: Scot and Fr. Chris discussed a list of questions and answer put out by the USCCB. the first question is “How important is the right of conscience in American tradition?” Scot quoted Thomas Jefferson: “No provision in our Constitution ought to be dearer to man than that which protects the rights of conscience against the enterprises of the civil authority”. In the past, has the federal government respected conscientious objections to procedures such as sterilization that may violate religious beliefs or moral convictions? Yes. For example, a law in effect since 1973 says that no individual is required to take part in “any part of a health service program or research activity funded in whole or in part under a program administered by the Secretary of Health and Human Services” if it is “contrary to his religious beliefs or moral convictions” (42 USC 300a-7 (d)). Even the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, which requires most of its health plans to cover contraception, exempts religiously affiliated plans and protects the conscience rights of health professionals in the other plans. Currently no federal law requires anyone to purchase, sell, sponsor, or be covered by a private health plan that violates his or her conscience. How has the Department of Health and Human Services departed from this policy? By issuing a mandate for coverage of sterilization and contraceptives (including long-lasting injections and implants, and “morning-after pills” that may cause an early abortion) in virtually all private health plans. In August 2011 HHS included these procedures in a list of “preventive services for women” to be required in health plans issued on or after August 1, 2012. On January 20, 2012, HHS reaffirmed its mandate while deferring enforcement against some religious employers until August 2013. Scot noted that the timing means President Obama won't have to stand for re-election with this issue hanging over him. Fr. Chris noted Mitt Romney's recall of how Catholic Charities in Boston had to get out of the adoption business because of this kind of overreach into religious liberty. Scot noted that many Catholics who supported Obama in 2008 who have said how they are disappointed by this ruling and that they won't be supporting Obama in 2012 unless this changes. Obama won in 2008 with a greater portion of the Catholic vote than John McCain. They discussed prominent Catholic Doug Kmiec who supported Obama in 2008 and later was named Ambassador to Malta by Obama has said this has gone too far. Isn't this an aspect of the Administration's drive for broader access to health care for all? Whether or not it was intended that way, it has the opposite effect. People will not be free to keep the coverage they have now that respects their convictions. Organizations with many employees will have to violate their consciences or stop offering health benefits altogether. And resources needed to provide basic health care to the uninsured will be used instead to facilitate IUDs and Depo-Provera for those who already had ample coverage. This is a diversion away from universal health care. Scot said the bishops weren't very strong opposing the initial mandate in the law because they expected the religious exemption to be included and now the only provision was giving the Church an extra year to figure out how to violate our consciences or drop health care coverage for employees and face massive fines. Fr. Chris said Dolan met with Obama in November and came out of that meeting confident of this conscience clause so this is a real shock to the Catholic bishops. Fr. Chris said the media has reported first that the administration was reconsidering, but then said only that they would listen to concerns. What solution to this dispute would be acceptable? Ideally, HHS can leave the law the way it has always been, so those who provide, sponsor and purchase health coverage can make their own decisions about whether to include these procedures without the federal government imposing one answer on everyone. If HHS refuses, it will be especially urgent for Congress to pass the “Respect for Rights of Conscience Act” (HR 1179/S. 1467), to prevent health care reform act from being used to violate insurers' and purchasers' moral and religious beliefs. 4th segment: Scot said the USCCB issued a response to the White House's contradictory statements on its own contraceptive mandate. The Obama administration, to justify its widely criticized mandate for contraception and sterilization coverage in private health plans, has posted a set of false and misleading claims on the White House blog (“Health Reform, Preventive Services, and Religious Institutions,” February 1). In what follows, each White House claim is quoted with a response. Claim: “Churches are exempt from the new rules: Churches and other houses of worship will be exempt from the requirement to offer insurance that covers contraception.” Response: This is not entirely true. To be eligible, even churches and houses of worship must show the government that they hire and serve primarily people of their own faith and have the inculcation of religious values as their purpose. Some churches may have service to the broader community as a major focus, for example, by providing direct service to the poor regardless of faith. Such churches would be denied an exemption precisely because their service to the common good is so great. More importantly, the vast array of other religious organizations – schools, hospitals, universities, charitable institutions – will clearly not be exempt. Most religious organizations, not just Catholic, would be forced to provide such services. Claim: “No individual health care provider will be forced to prescribe contraception: The President and this Administration have previously and continue to express strong support for existing conscience protections. For example, no Catholic doctor is forced to write a prescription for contraception.” Response: It is true that these rules directly apply to employers and insurers, not providers, but this is beside the point: The Administration is forcing individuals and institutions, including religious employers, to sponsor and subsidize what they consider immoral. Less directly, the classification of these drugs and procedures as basic “preventive services” will increase pressures on doctors, nurses and pharmacists to provide them in order to participate in private health plans – and no current federal conscience law prevents that from happening. Finally, because the mandate includes abortifacient drugs, it violates one of the “existing conscience protections” (the Weldon amendment) for which the Administration expresses “strong support.” Scot said this is about forcing insurers to include them in their plans and individual Catholics must then subsidize those immoral acts. This isn't about directly providing the drugs. Claim: “No individual will be forced to buy or use contraception: This rule only applies to what insurance companies cover. Under this policy, women who want contraception will have access to it through their insurance without paying a co-pay or deductible. But no one will be forced to buy or use contraception.” Response: The statement that no one will be forced to buy it is false. Women who want contraception will be able to obtain it without co-pay or deductible precisely because women who do not want contraception will be forced to help pay for it through their premiums. This mandate passes costs from those who want the service, to those who object to it. Claim: “Drugs that cause abortion are not covered by this policy: Drugs like RU486 are not covered by this policy, and nothing about this policy changes the President's firm commitment to maintaining strict limitations on Federal funding for abortions. No Federal tax dollars are used for elective abortions.” Response: False. The policy already requires coverage of Ulipristal (HRP 2000 or “Ella”), a drug that is a close analogue to RU-486 (mifepristone) and has the same effects.1 RU-486 itself is also being tested for possible use as an “emergency contraceptive” – and if the FDA approves it for that purpose, it will automatically be mandated as well. Scot said the White House is trying to pivot from an unfavorable question to a more favorable. This isn't about a particular drug, but a class of drugs. Claim:“Over half of Americans already live in the 28 States that require insurance companies cover contraception: Several of these States like North Carolina, New York, and California have identical religious employer exemptions. Some States like Colorado, Georgia and Wisconsin have no exemption at all.” Response: This misleads by ignoring important facts, and some of it is simply false. All the state mandates, even those without religious exemptions, may be avoided by self- insuring prescription drug coverage, by dropping that particular coverage altogether, or by taking refuge in a federal law that pre-empts any state mandates (ERISA). None of these havens is available under the federal mandate. It is also false to claim that North Carolina has an identical exemption. It is broader: It does not require a religious organization to serve primarily people of its own faith, or to fulfill the federal rule's narrow tax code criterion. Moreover, the North Carolina law, unlike the federal mandate, completely excludes abortifacient drugs like Ella and RU-486 as well as “emergency contraceptives” like Preven. Scot said some states have policies on this, but they would be overridden by federal law. The state laws don't affect religious employers because federal exemptions sweep them away,but those exemptions would be done away by this. Fr. Chris said the White House is comparing apples and oranges. Claim: “Contraception is used by most women: According to a study by the Guttmacher Institute, most women, including 98 percent of Catholic women, have used contraception.” Response: This is irrelevant, and it is presented in a misleading way. If a survey found that 98% of people had lied, cheated on their taxes, or had sex outside of marriage, would the government claim it can force everyone to do so? But this claim also mangles the data to create a false impression. The study actually says this is true of 98% of “sexually experienced” women. The more relevant statistic is that the drugs and devices subject to this mandate (sterilization, hormonal prescription contraceptives and IUDs) are used by 69% of those women who are “sexually active” and “do not want to become pregnant.” Surely that is a minority of the general public, yet every man and woman who needs health insurance will have to pay for this coverage. The drugs that the mandate's supporters say will be most advanced by the new rule, because they have the highest co-pays and deductibles now, are powerful but risky injectable and implantable hormonal contraceptives, now used by perhaps 5% of women. The mandate is intended to change women's reproductive behavior, not only reflect it. Fr. Chris went back to Pope Benedict who said that the Church's teaching is not based on popularity. It is based on the truth communicated by Jesus Christ. Claim: “The Obama Administration is committed to both respecting religious beliefs and increasing access to important preventive services. And as we move forward, our strong partnerships with religious organizations will continue.”  Response: False. There is no “balance” in the final HHS rule—one side has prevailed entirely, as the mandate and exemption remain entirely unchanged from August 2011, despite many thousands of comments filed since then indicating intense opposition. Indeed, the White House Press Secretary declared on January 31, “I don't believe there are any constitutional rights issues here,” so little was placed on that side of the scale. The Administration's stance on religious liberty has also been shown in other ways. Recently it argued before the Supreme Court that religious organizations have no greater right under the First amendment to hire or fire their own ministers than secular organizations have over their leaders– a claim that was unanimously rejected by the Supreme Court as “extreme” and “untenable.” The Administration recently denied a human trafficking grant to a Catholic service provider with high objective scores, and gave part of that grant instead to a provider with not just lower, but failing, objective scores, all because the Catholic provider refused in conscience to compromise the same moral and religious beliefs at issue here. Such action violates not only federal conscience laws, but President Obama's executive order assuring “faith-based” organizations that they will be able to serve the public in federal programs without compromising their faith. Scot said the bishops are encouraging everyone to contact their Senators and Representatives to ask them to support proposed legislation to protect religious liberty. 5th segment: Scot and Fr. Chris turned to discuss a recent op-ed in the Boston Globe by columnist Joan Venocchi. But not all employees of Catholic institutions are Catholics. Why should their employers impose their religious beliefs on them and deny coverage for birth control and other medical care? As long as those Catholic institutions are getting taxpayer money, they should follow secular rules. That's the Obama administration's argument, and it makes sense. Scot said Venocchi doesn't remember that it's the taxpayers who provide the money that the government disburses to provide services to people. Fr. Chris said the majority of Americans are religious believers, so she forgets that the majority of the people paying the taxes are believers in God who want to protect their conscience. On the larger health care reform issue, this president has the moral high ground, if only he would take it. A church that is supposedly dedicated to feeding the hungry and clothing the naked wouldn't want to leave it to insurance companies and free markets to decide who gets to see a doctor and who gets care - would it? Fr. Chris said he's doesn't understand her point. It's a red herring. People have been receiving health care all along. All the Church is saying is that we cannot support contraception, sterilization, and abortion. Scot said the argument is that if you support universal healthcare, you have to support this mandate. Obama isn't trying to regulate religion or undermine Catholicism. He's telling Catholic leaders they can't regulate the beliefs of those of other faiths. That's fitting in a country that treasures religious freedom, but also values separation of church and state. Scot said Obama is indeed telling Catholics that they can't regular their own beliefs. He said separation of church and state is also misrepresented. It only means the government can't name a particular religion as official. Fr. Chris said this is exactly what the Church wants: freedom from the interference of the state. Scot ended by reciting the First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Freedom of religion is not just how we pray in Church on Sunday, but we live our whole lives every day. This law prohibits the free exercise thereof.

Effects of female steroid hormones on endothelial cells are gaining increased importance due to several studies on the effects of hormonal treatment on cardiovascular risk. Recent data argue for an improvement of endothelium-derived relaxation and impaired vascular contraction by estradiol, whereas progesterone and testosterone might entail contrary effects. So far, gestagenic influence on endothelial cell physiology is poorly understood. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) exposed to the female sex hormones estradiol and progesterone show expression of estrogen receptor-beta (ER beta) and progesterone receptor A (PR-A), and are negative for ER alpha and PR-B. The aim of this study was to analyze the expression and stimulation of PR-A and -B in HUVECs after stimulation with progesterone and PR antagonists that are commercially available. PR-B expression or upregulation was abrogated after application of progesterone or antagonists to HUVECs. Expression of PR-A could be significantly upregulated with progesterone and mifepristone. Unexpectedly, stimulation with the progesterone antagonist RU486 (mifepristone) was accomplished by an upregulation of PR-A expression in our study. We conclude that gestagenic effects on HUVECs independent of modulators are mediated via the PR-A. Copyright (C) 2009 S. Karger AG, Basel

And Babs gets a message ... from God. Uh-oh. Here comes Missouri House Bill 1625, exempting pharmacies from legal responsibility if they choose not to fulfill legitimate prescriptions for RU486 and Plan B. Can it be proven that this bill is based on religious belief? We think so but, unfortunately, we’re not on the Supreme Court. The Herd name their least favorite historical characters.
