Spring is the season when gardeners throw off the hibernation and slumber of months of wet feet, many layers and waterproofs and are reborn anew! The stirring of life in the garden is one of the years great experiences, and makes a gardening life such a worthwhile pursuit, not only is it good for the planet to see the earth greening up, it is also good for the gardeners soul. But there is still lots of hard work to get on with - seeds have to be sown, mulch laid, supports erected and lawns mown. So join Lucy and Saul as they continue their professional gardening lives in the pure heaven that is Spring! With day upon day of sunshine, Saul and Lucy could be forgiven for thinking that spring is set to stay, but a brisk wind reminds them both that conditions can turn on a sixpence... That might be handy to be fair, because the soil is dry (as per normal) in Essex, but also in Saul's beloved Devon, so April, do your traditional thing, if you please. Weather waffle aside, the duo chat this week about shifting RHS peat policies and muse over why things could be taking a little longer than liked. Lucy also beams about her day filming at Audley End, and Saul braces himself for a trip up the country to be a key speaker at the Northern Hardy Plants Society key event. ROB PARKER chats to Paul about THE TROUBLED DEEP: A Cam Killick Norfolk Mystery, Ben Bracken, Audible Books, working with young minds, PTSD, loving location, knee injuries and kismet. THE TROUBLED DEEP: Nobody ever knew what happened to the Brindleys. One summer they were there - flashy, loud and beautiful - and then they were gone. A mother, father and two children, vanished into the East Anglian night. Some said the family never made it home from the party; their speeding car thrown off the tracks and the four of them silently buried in the marshes. Others said they had simply moved on. For thirty years, the case remained as cold as the freezing waterways of the Norfolk broads.Until Cam Killick found the car.An ex-marine and ex-SBS officer, Cam Killick's PTSD has made the return to civilian life a living nightmare. The only place he can find peace is underwater, where the world is muffled to white noise. As a cold case diver it is his job to scour the waterways of the country for the lost, the submerged, the drowned, laying their stories to rest alongside them.Except when Cam throws open the doors to the Brindley car, all four bodies are missing. And Cam will soon learn that some secrets, once submerged, are better off staying that way.ROB PARKER is the author of Far From The Tree, the No. 1 bestselling thriller for Audible Original and the first instalment in the Thirty Miles trilogy, as well as eight novels for independent publishers. He is the host of both Crime Central Manchester, a monthly showcase of emerging crime writing talent and blockbuster bestsellers, and the Blood Brothers podcast. During the Halloween season, we had the pleasure of merging our passion for horror and East Anglian tales. This opportunity arose when Dr. Mark Fryers, a film history expert and a friend of our podcast, reached out to us. He shared his ongoing research involving Norwich, Count Dracula, and Universal Studios, which immediately piqued our interest for a podcast feature. In the upcoming interview, Mark will shed light on Charles D. Hall, a Norwich native born in 1888, coinciding with the year of Jack the Ripper. Hall honed his architectural skills in Norwich, which later propelled him to Hollywood fame after a period working with Fred Karno's music hall company. There, he encountered icons like Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy. Transitioning from designing sets for Karno, Hall eventually collaborated with Hollywood horror legends such as Tod Browning and James Whale. His artistic vision crafted the ambiance of legendary locales like Castle Frankenstein and Castle Dracula, and films like The Invisible Man and The Black Cat, featuring Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. Dr. Mark Fryers, who now lectures at the Open University, is an extensively published scholar with a focus on maritime and gothic horror representations. His book, "Celluloid Tales: Norfolk Film History," is currently available and comes highly recommended, and can be found here

My guest for this episode is journalist and author Matt Salusbury, who joined me to talk about his latest book, Mystery Animals of Suffolk. This catalogues a wide range of yet-to-be identified animals reported in the English county, together with folkloric creatures from local tradition in the region. It opens with an examination of the mythical entities of East Anglian storytelling, including hairy wildmen known as Woodwoses which survive as carved figures in some of Suffolk's churches. There are accounts too of dangerous freshwater mermaids, as well as encounters with baby-snatching fairies, in particular centered around the town of Stowmarket. The book also includes reported sightings of Black Shuck – Suffolk's phantom black dogs, which have been reported reported from ancient folklore tight up to the 1970's. The mystery animals surveyed then become progressively more plausible, with the final third of the book devoted to an account of over one-hundred and seventy mystery big cat sightings withing Suffolk. I start off the interview talking with Matt about his background and the county of Suffolk. We then discuss Mystery Animals of Suffolk itself and some of the creatures that are included in its pages, following the structure of the book, beginning with the mythic Woodwoses and concluding with the multitude of big cat sightings in the county. Further information about Matt's research can be found at https://bigcatsofsuffolk.com/. Mystery Animals of Suffolk is published by Bittern Books and can be purchased at their website - go to https://bitternbooks.co.uk/product/mystery-animals-of-suffolk/ for more details. Episode 143It's been 25 years since that fateful day when Bradford City threw a spanner in the works of Ipswich Town's Premier League dreams. As the football world turned its attention elsewhere, a simmering hatred was born in the hearts of the East Anglian faithful – a grudge that has since twisted and morphed like a vindictive caricature, finding new targets along the way.Enter Leeds United and Huddersfield Town, two Yorkshire clubs unsuspecting of their impending doom, yet unwitting pawns in Bradford's cosmic football vendetta. Yes, you heard it right – Bradford City, the unassuming Bantams, have been quietly pulling the strings from West Yorkshire all this time, orchestrating chaos in the football leagues and laughing all the way to Valley Parade.Picture this: a shadowy council of Bradfordians, adorned in claret and amber robes, plotting over cups of Tetley's tea, declaring, “Let's keep Ipswich out of the Premier League – just for kicks!” Little did they know the seismic ripple effect their actions would have over two decades later.Leeds United, perennial yo-yo club and once the darlings of English football, found themselves ensnared in Bradford's wicked web. The Bantams' mere existence seemed to irk Leeds supporters, who saw them as an annoying little cousin meddling in their affairs. As fate would have it, Bradford's unrelenting quest for chaos culminated in Leeds' relegation woes, leaving Elland Road in a state of bewilderment and mild disdain for anything claret and amber. But wait, there's more! Huddersfield Town, the Terriers of West Yorkshire, fell victim to Bradford's jinx as well. Bradford City, with their devious charm and underdog spirit, delivered the knockout blow that sent Huddersfield tumbling down to the depths of League One. Oh, the agony! The fury! The misplaced resentment towards those pesky Bantams! And here we are, 25 years later, scratching our heads and chuckling at the absurdity of it all. Bradford City, the unwitting instigators of football melodrama, couldn't care less about the mayhem they've caused. They're too busy sipping their Yorkshire tea and enjoying the view from mid-table obscurity.Meanwhile, Ipswich, Leeds, and Huddersfield fans stew in their own bitter brew of football conspiracy theories, pointing fingers at the claret and amber-clad miscreants from Bradford. “It's all their fault!” they cry, shaking their fists at the Yorkshire heavens. But deep down, amidst the banter and the rivalry, there's a begrudging respect for Bradford City – the cheeky upstarts who dared to disrupt the football hierarchy and live to tell the tale. After all, what's football without a bit of mischief and mayhem? So, here's to you, Bradford City – the accidental architects of chaos, the disruptors of destiny, and the perennial punchline of football lore. As the world turns and the football seasons ebb and flow, we'll always have Bradford to blame and a good laugh to go along with it. Because in the end, it's just a game – and Bradford City, well, they're playing it their way, claret and amber mischief and all.Music - The Zutons - Zuton FeverArctic Monkeys - Fake Tales of San FranciscoDandy Warhols - Bohemian Like YouSupport the Show.Insta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.comArtwork @digitalnomadicart on Insta
M.R. James's "A Warning to the Curious" (1925) is a seminal ghost story that explores the consequences of disturbing ancient artifacts and the enduring power of folklore. Set in the fictional coastal town of Seaburgh, based on Aldeburgh, Suffolk, where James had strong personal connections, the story follows Paxton, an amateur archaeologist who unearths one of three legendary crowns believed to protect England from invasion. The story draws upon a rich tradition of magical artifacts in British folklore, such as the Glastonbury Thorn and the buried head of Bran the Blessed, situating itself within a larger cultural narrative of Britain's magical defenses. James's deep knowledge of East Anglian history and folklore is evident in his vivid descriptions of Seaburgh's landmarks and his reference to the crown of Redwald, an ancient East Anglian king, foreshadowing the 1939 discovery of the Sutton Hoo treasure. As a work of folk horror, "A Warning to the Curious" explores the clash between modernity and the lingering presence of the past, with Paxton encountering the vengeful ghost of William Ager, the crown's guardian. The story resonates with other works in the genre, such as H.R. Wakefield's "The First Sheaf" (1922), highlighting the dark side of rural traditions and the supernatural. The story's post-World War I context adds depth to its themes, reflecting the profound impact of the war on British society. Paxton's tragic fate, with his broken jaw and mouth filled with sand, evokes the horrific injuries suffered by soldiers in the trenches, serving as a metaphor for the lost potential and unfulfilled promises of a generation scarred by war. Derrida's concept of hauntology and Mark Fisher's extension of these ideas provide a compelling lens for analyzing the story. The ancient crown and Ager's spectral presence embody the past's disruption of the present, while the story's pessimistic tone reflects the post-war zeitgeist and the haunting of society by the specters of war and lost futures. "A Warning to the Curious" showcases James's mastery of the ghost story genre, weaving together folklore, history, and the supernatural to create a haunting tale that continues to resonate with readers, reminding us of the enduring power of the past to shape our present. Komorebi (Japanese): The patterns cast by sunlight filtering through trees. Gruttling (old East Anglian dialect): A strange, inexplicable noise. Gyles' poem this week was 'Sick Room' by Billy Collins Every time Canaletto painted Venice he painted her from a different angle, sometimes from point of view he must have imagined, for there is no place in the city he could have stood and observed such scenes. How ingenious of him to visualise a dome or canal from any point in space. How passionate he was to delineate Venice from perspectives that required him to mount the air and levitate there with his floating brush. But I have been sick in this bed for over sixty hours, and I am not Canaletto, and this airless little room, with its broken ceiling fan and it monstrous wallpaper, is not Venice. Kings of Anglia - Ipswich Town podcast from the EADT and Ipswich Star
Stuart Watson, Alex Jones, Ross Halls and Mark Heath are back to build up to the second East Anglian derby of the season at Carrow Road tomorrow. The boys discuss how they're feeling about the game and their reflections on December's draw, before moving onto yesterday's pressers. The big news there was Kieffer Moore's likely absence, so the gents chat about Ali Al-Hamadi's big opportunity, plus who should start at right back and in midfield. Then we hear from Norwich City scribe Paddy Davitt before offering our predictions and picking our derby day heroes. And Mark gets a bit excited, obviously. The rule of the Wuffingas dynasty in East Anglia came to an end in 749. Despite this, though, the end of the Wuffingas' monopoly on power was not characterized by disruption or upheaval. Instead, the final two kings of the Wuffingas line, Ealdwulf and Ælfwald, presided over an extended period of relative stability and prosperity, a fact marked by both kings reigns lasting for multiple decades. Besides this, copious archaeological evidence remains which demonstrates that during their time at the head of the East Anglian kingdom the realm experienced marked economic growth through the expansion of international trade and the use of coinage. Crime novelist Cathi Unsworth turned Goth in her teens in rural Norfolk fired by a cocktail of Dennis Wheatley, the Damned on the Peel show and the dark arts of the York Festival “Gothtopia” bill in 1984. East Anglian history poses a particular problem for historians of Anglo-Saxon England. The Kingdom of East Anglia was one of just four kingdoms still in existence when the Great Heathen Army landed in England in 865, but hardly anything written records have survived from its time as an independent kingdom, most likely due to its having suffered the bulk of the Army's initial onslaught which seemingly destroyed the kingdom's major religious and administrative centres. ‘I would like to be remembered as a good writer and a good man . . . Writers are observers. We are natural lookers, watchers . . . it seems to me quite wonderful that I have so long been able to make a living from something I love so much.' So wrote the writer, editor and famed chronicler of rural life Ronald Blythe for the Mail on Sunday in 2004. That Ronald (or Ronnie, as he preferred to be known), who died aged 100 in early 2023, will be remembered as a good writer is irrefutable. Many Slightly Foxed listeners will know and love not only Akenfield – his bestselling 1969 portrait of a fictionalized East Anglian village – and the ‘Word from Wormingford' column for the Church Times but also his unparalleled collection of short stories, poems, histories, novels and essays and, most recently, his year-long diary published as Next to Nature, which celebrates the slow perpetual turn of the farming year, the liturgical calendar and the rhythms of village life. In this episode Ronnie's fellow writers and friends, Julia Blackburn and his biographer Ian Collins, lead us down the rough-hewn track to the ancient yeoman's cottage he inherited from the artist John Nash and into the nooks and crannies of his private world, tracing a life well lived and well written. We meet the changeling boy obsessed with books and nature and the self-taught youth whose good looks and charisma caused queues at the Colchester Library reference desk where he worked until he was discovered by the painter Christine Nash. It was she, recognizing his rare talent, who insisted he leave his job to pursue writing fulltime. We track Ronnie's rich literary life path through his friends' personal recollections, touching on tales of mid-winter meetings with E. M. Forster and an unlikely tryst with Patricia Highsmith. We muse on his spirituality and sexuality, his great love for life and his deep connection to the rural world with all its harshness and all its beauty, before heading for Bottengoms Farm where we hear how this great man and great writer saw out his last days in the company of good books and close friends. For our book-lovers' day out we head to the quintessential English cottage of Ronnie's hero, the poet and keen gardener John Clare. And, to finish, a round-up of book recommendations including another East Anglian delight in Adrian Bell's A Countryman's Spring Notebook, an unusual fishing memoir by the writer of the Killing Eve series that's about much more than just fishing, and the intricately plotted revenge tale No Name by Wilkie Collins, one of Ronnie's favourite writers.
