Growing up in the tight-knit Jewish community of Lakewood, New Jersey, during the 80s and 90s was akin to living in a serene bubble where everyone knew each other, and life moved at a gentle pace. Now, as I look back with our guest, Mrs. Giti Fredman, we marvel at how much has changed as Lakewood transformed into a bustling city. Both Mrs. Fredman and I have traversed various Jewish communities, from Munsey to Jerusalem, and witnessed similar evolution, reflecting on how these experiences have molded our perspectives on community and growth. Mrs. Fredman's story of her husband's unexpected inspiration to move to Portland during a friend's farewell party is a testament to life's surprising twists and the opportunities they bring. Our conversation takes a deeply personal turn as we delve into the journey of embracing Jewish faith—not just as a routine, but as a source of profound personal growth and transformation. Mrs. Fredman shares insightful stories about individuals who have reignited their spiritual journey, like the man who decided to stop eating shellfish at 68, illustrating that growth is possible at any stage of life. We explore the distinction between a growing Jew and a stagnant Jew, emphasizing the importance of continuous personal evolution. Through stories of community outreach, we highlight the transformative impact of spreading Torah learning and building meaningful connections in diverse Jewish communities, reminding listeners of the power of kindness and Jewish values in daily life.As we reflect on the legacy of the Holocaust, we confront the responsibility we bear to educate future generations. Through personal family stories, we honor the resilience of those who survived and the resurgence of Jewish life that followed. Our discussion underscores the significance of remembrance, while also celebrating Jewish continuity and the sanctity of traditions like Shabbos. Mrs. Fredman's journey from outreach work to entrepreneurship with "Just Bake It" encapsulates the joy of embracing Hashem's love and the opportunities life presents. By sharing this journey, we encourage listeners to find joy and success in their own personal and spiritual endeavors, while recognizing the profound pride and responsibility that comes with being part of the Jewish nation.Recorded in TORCH Center - Studio B in Houston, Texas on May 15, 2023.Released as Podcast on December 1, 2024_____________Giti Fredman can be reached at Giti@JustBakeIt.org and justbakeit.orgDONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Príosún curtha ar Enoch Burke an athuair. For the third time, the High Court has jailed teacher Enoch Burke for violating a court order. Den triú uair, tá príosún curtha ag an Ard-Chúirt ar an múinteoir Enoch Burke as ordú cúirte a shárú. Judge Michaell Quinn said today that he was satisfied that Burke was in breach of the permanent appeal granted to Wilson's Hospital school in County Westmeath last year. Dúirt an Breitheamh Michaell Quinn inniu go raibh sé sásta go raibh Burke ag sárú an achomhairc bhuan a deonadh don scoil Wilson's Hospital i gContae na hIarmhí anuraidh. The Judge ordered that Enoch Burke be imprisoned until he was cleared of contempt of court. D'ordaigh an Breitheamh go gcuirfí príosún ar Enoch Burke go dtí go mbeadh an díspeagadh cúirte glanta aige. Enoch Burke will be in court again on October 11 but he can clear the contempt court whenever he wants. Beidh Enoch Burke os comhair na cúirte arís an 11 Deireadh Fómhair ach is féidir leis an díspeagadh a ghlanadh os comhair na cúirte aon uair is mian leis. Enoch Burke told the Judge that God will be responsible for imprisoning someone because of their faith. Dúirt Enoch Burke leis an mBreitheamh gur do Dia a bheidh sé freagrach as príosún a chur ar dhuine de bharr a gcreidimh. Enoch Burke has spent over 400 days in Munsey in two shifts, for breaching a court order, which made him stay clean at Wilson's Hospital. Tá os cionn 400 lá caite ag Enoch Burke i Muinseó ina dhá sheal, as urghaire cúirte a shárú, urghaire a chuir air fanacht glan ar Wilson's Hospital. He was released at the end of June when the school closed for the summer. Scaoileadh saor é ag deireadh an Mheithimh nuair a dhún an scoil don samhradh. But Enoch Burke is coming back to the school since it opened after the Summer vacation. Ach tá Enoch Burke ag teacht i láthair na scoile arís ó d'oscail sí tar éis shaoire an tSamhraidh. The school said in court that Burke's presence was stressful and disruptive for both staff and students. Dúirt an scoil sa chúirt gur strus agus suaitheadh don bhfoireann agus do dhaltaí araon Burke bheith ann. It was also said that having Burke's support groups on and off the school grounds is also a health and safety issue. Dúradh freisin gur fadhb shábháilteachta agus sláinte é freisin grúpaí tacaíochta Burke bheith ar thailte na scoile agus taobh amuigh di. Enoch Burke was fired from his job at the school last January but he is appealing that. Briseadh Enoch Burke as a phost sa scoil mí Eanáir seo caite ach tá sé sin á achomharc aige. That appeal was unsuccessfully heard, and Burke has initiated legal proceedings in relation to the appeals panel in the case. Níor éisteadh an t-achomharc sin go fóíll, agus tá imeachtaí dlí tionscnaithe ag Burke maidir leis an bpainéal achomhairc sa chás. Enoch Burke was arrested on the school grounds in the evening, and a lawyer for Wilson's Hospital, Rosemary Mallon, asked that he be jailed. Gabhadh Enoch Burke ar thailte na scoile tráthnóna, agus d'iarr abhchóide ar son Wilson's Hospital, Rosemary Mallon, go gcuirfí príosún air. She said if that wasn't done he would be at school again tomorrow. Dúirt sí mura ndéanfaí sin go mbeadh sé i láthair na scoile arís amárach. Enoch Burke said that the court was denying him his faith. Dúirt Enoch Burke go raibh an cúirt ag séanadh a chreidimh air. The former principal had ordered to 'force transgenderism on students'. Bhí ordú curtha ar ag an iar-phríomhoide 'trasinscneachas a bhrú ar dhaltaí'. He said his students knew he was an honest man but he wouldn't tell them that. Dúirt sé go raibh a fhios ag a chuid daltaí gur fear ionraic a bhí ann ach nach mbeadh sé á rá sin leo. He referred to a passage from the Book of Jesus and said that the belief in man and woman was at ...

He explains that 95% of our decisions are based on how we feel in the moment, which can be terrifying. However, he emphasizes that emotions have a purpose and have kept us alive throughout evolution. fWotD Episode 2590: Munsey's Magazine Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Friday, 7 June 2024 is Munsey's Magazine.Munsey's Magazine was an American magazine founded by Frank Munsey. Originally launched in 1889 as Munsey's Weekly, a humorous magazine, edited by John Kendrick Bangs, it was not successful, and by late 1891 had lost $100,000 ($3.39 million in 2023). Munsey converted it to a general illustrated monthly in October of that year, retitled Munsey's Magazine and priced at twenty-five cents ($8.48 in 2023). Richard Titherington became the editor, and remained in that role for the rest of the magazine's existence. In 1893 Munsey reduced the price to ten cents ($3.39 in 2023): this brought him into conflict with the American News Company, which had a near-monopoly on magazine distribution, as they were unwilling to handle the magazine at the cost Munsey proposed. Munsey started his own distribution company and was quickly successful: the first issue at ten cents began with a print run of 20,000 copies but eventually sold 60,000, and within a year circulation had risen to over a quarter of a million issues.Munsey's Magazine included both fiction and non-fiction departments on topics such as art, music, and the theatre, and about famous people. In 1893 Munsey became one of the first publishers to regularly put a picture of a pretty girl on the cover, and circulation was also helped by the liberal use of illustrations. During the mid-1890s Munsey's often included images of nude and semi-nude women, though this became less common later in the decade. Circulation reached a peak of about 700,000 in 1897, and fluctuated thereafter until the 1910s, when it began to decline. It became a fiction-only magazine in 1921. Many well-known writers appeared in its pages, including O. Henry, H. Rider Haggard, Arthur Conan Doyle, Bret Harte, Max Brand, Edgar Rice Burroughs, P. G. Wodehouse, Joseph Conrad, and Ella Wheeler Wilcox. By 1924 circulation was only 64,000. In 1929 it was merged with Argosy, another of Munsey's magazines. The change from a price of twenty-five cents to ten cents is considered by magazine historians to be the start of a revolution in magazine publishing. Before 1893, the bulk of most magazines' income came from the sale of subscriptions, though advertising was another source of income. Munsey's Magazine showed that it was possible to set a low price in order to increase circulation, and attract sufficient advertising revenue to make a substantial profit. Other magazines, notably McClure's and Cosmopolitan, quickly followed Munsey's example, but it was not until 1904 that another magazine, Everybody's, managed to outstrip Munsey's circulation, reaching a figure of almost a million. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:19 UTC on Friday, 7 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Munsey's Magazine on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Danielle Neural.
fWotD Episode 2514: Argosy (magazine) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Saturday, 23 March 2024 is Argosy (magazine).Argosy was an American magazine, founded in 1882 as The Golden Argosy, a children's weekly, edited by Frank Munsey and published by E. G. Rideout. Munsey took over as publisher when Rideout went bankrupt in 1883, and after many struggles made the magazine profitable. He shortened the title to The Argosy in 1888 and targeted an audience of men and boys with adventure stories. In 1894 he switched it to a monthly schedule and in 1896 he eliminated all non-fiction and started using cheap pulp paper, making it the first pulp magazine. Circulation had reached half a million by 1907, and remained strong until the 1930s. The name was changed to Argosy All-Story Weekly in 1920 after the magazine merged with All-Story Weekly, another Munsey pulp, and from 1929 it became just Argosy. In 1925 Munsey died, and the publisher, the Frank A. Munsey Company, was purchased by William Dewart, who had worked for Munsey. By 1942 circulation had fallen to no more than 50,000, and after a failed effort to revive the magazine by including sensational non-fiction, it was sold that year to Popular Publications, another pulp magazine publisher. Popular converted it from pulp to slick format, and initially attempted to make it a fiction-only magazine, but gave up on this within a year. Instead it became a men's magazine, carrying fiction and feature articles aimed at men. Circulation soared and by the early 1950s was well over one million.Early contributors included Horatio Alger, Oliver Optic, and G. A. Henty. During the pulp era, many famous writers appeared in Argosy, including O. Henry, James Branch Cabell, Albert Payson Terhune, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Erle Stanley Gardner, Robert E. Howard, and Max Brand. Argosy was regarded as one of the most prestigious publications in the pulp market, along with Blue Book, Adventure and Short Stories. After the transition to slick format it continued to publish fiction, including science fiction by Robert Heinlein, Arthur Clarke, and Ray Bradbury. From 1948 to 1958 it published a series by Gardner called "The Court of Last Resort" which examined the cases of dozens of convicts who maintained their innocence, and succeeding in overturning many of the convictions. NBC adapted the series for television in 1957.Popular sold the magazine to David Geller in 1972, and in 1978 Geller sold it to the Filipacchi Group, which closed down the magazine at the end of the year. The title has been revived several times, most recently in 2016.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:09 UTC on Saturday, 23 March 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Argosy (magazine) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Arthur Neural.
