So...this podcast gives you a “behind the scenes” look at the side hustles, start-ups and businesses that I have worked on over the years. Showing you the pitfalls of starting and working on a side business, so you can learn from my mistakes and launch your own successful side hustle. I’ve spent over a decade working on side hustles and projects, hoping to finally find that one thing that takes off. So I can leave the constraints of the “Rat Race”, the 9-5 grind. I’m not saying I’ve been successful, yet. I’m still trying to find my one thing.
This is going to be my last ever episode of Find Your Side Hustle It's with a heavy heart and a lot of sadness, but I've decided to call it a day with the podcast. I've learned, so much, and met lots of people, many I can now call friends. Recording Find Your Side Hustle is one of the best things I've ever done. As with other episodes, I go over my goal when I started with this podcast. Why I've decided to stop. What I've learned over the last 2 years and how it's benefited. Finally talking about what the future holds for me. If you would like to keep in touch I'm active on Twitter and LinkedIn. Or you can sign up for my newsletter where I will send you an email with what I'm up to from time to time. You can find links to all three here: https://www.philliphughes.co.uk
It seems that Cryptocurrencies, the blockchain, Web3, and NFTs have exploded recently. With many people making a living from creating, promoting, and selling NFTs But are they a viable side hustle? Are they limited to people that understand the technology and complexity? Or can anyone get involved? In this episode, I discuss if NFTs are a viable side hustle and give my thoughts on the pros and cons. As well as potential future use for NFTs if mass adoption does happen.
Over the last few years, the market for online courses and learning has completely opened up. More and more people are turning to online resources to upskill, and are willing to pay for access. I've had many ideas over the years to help people by passing on my knowledge. These ideas are perfect to become online courses In this episode, I talk about my ideas, both at a high level and go into detail about one idea in particular. I also discuss my thoughts on online courses as a side hustle from a positive and negative viewpoint.
When I first set out on my side hustle journey, many, many years ago. The suggestion was to create your own information product and see if you can sell it. In other words, eBooks and digital downloads. Who knew that this recommendation would turn into this huge market. Is creating your own digital download enough these days? Has the market and perception changed? Are they still worth investing time and money in? In this episode, I talk about the pros and cons of eBooks and digital downloads. And how I have thought about them in relation to my own side projects.
My background is in software and software development. I've never gone down the route of creating a physical product as a side project. That has all changed recently. I've had a few ideas for physical products over the years, but haven't taken any steps to make them a reality. Recently, I've wanted to test out a product test that I've had, but I'm finding it difficult. In this episode, I discuss the four stumbling blocks that I'm thinking about for my product idea. As well as chatting about the three key benefits I can see for creating your own physical products. I would love to know your thoughts on this.
In episode #79 I talked about my struggles with trying to show up every day and create content. Whether that's on social media, writing blogs, or recording podcasts. In this episode, I talk about how I've counteracted this inconsistency and how things have been going. It all started with binging on two courses created by a gentleman called Justin Welsh. Off the back of these courses, I've been able to batch a lot of my content creation. Coming up with frameworks and systems to come up with ideas and write content. Then use automation software that I've already purchased to get the content out each day. I hope you find this useful. Here at my affiliate links to Justin's courses and the scheduling tool I use. The Content OS: https://www.justinwelsh.me/a/2147507660/UDFoJVbv The LinkedIn OS: https://www.justinwelsh.me/a/2147505019/UDFoJVbv SocialBee: https://socialbee.grsm.io/phil
I've heard it from many sources and successful people. "Create content every day for a year and it will change your life and business" I wish it was that easy. As with all things, it isn't always possible. In this episode, I discuss my 2+ years of experience, trying to show up every day. And how I've been failing at this almost daily. There are so many platforms and types of media that you can publish these days. It's a fulltime job in itselfs.
Have you ever been told you can't do something, and it makes you want to do it more? Like competing against the big boy, the giant businesses that seem to dominate industries. I was told by someone, that I won't be able to make anything of Elementary Analytics unless I get VC funding or massive outside investment. In this episode I give my thoughts and what I felt being told this and if it is making me think twice about working on Elementary Analytics. Spoiler alert: It isn't
This episode is going to be slightly different. I'm going to share an episode of a podcast I was interviewed on called The Untitled Entrepreneur, hosted by the brilliant Jesse Blount. 6 months can go by so quickly, and we never take the time to stop and review how far we have come. This is what Jesse got to me do on his podcast, to review how things have been going with Elementary Analytics. You feel like you haven't made any progress with some of the targets your set yourself, I'm the same. It was an amazing thing to do to look back and see how much I've grown in such a short space of time. Please check out The Untitled Entrepreneur. I hope you enjoy this episode and the podcasts.

I don't like talking about fads, or the latest trends. Recently something has taken off and become huge. So much so that my wife and I have a daily competition. Yes, I'm talking about Wordle. Wordle impressed me straight from the get-go. It could be because I love software and building website. And the fact I record this podcast. But what can Wordle teach us to help us with our own side hustles and online businesses? That's what I'm discussing in this episode.

One morning, I was sat there thinking about what I've learned over the last 10 years of working on side projects? In fact, what are the top 10 things I've learned over the last few years alone? Once I had my top 10, I put out a LinkedIn post and Tweet about it, and people seemed to like what I'd put out there. So, I decided to turn the top 10 into a podcast, and give a bit of background about each one. Hope you enjoy it! Let me know what your top 3 from this list are. It's tough to know how to market a project in the early days. How do you actually get in front of people? A few people had suggested that I get involved in a few networking communities. So I decided to give it a try. There are so many networking communities out there. Most have embraced online meet-ups now too so the barrier to entry has been lowered massively. If you're like me and from a technical background. You may not have built up the sales and marketing skills, yet, that you need to get your projects out there. Getting a side hustle or side project off the ground is hard. If you're like me, you may be overly critical of yourself. I've been told by a close friend that I'm too harsh on myself. In this episode I talk about this, and what I'm doing to help stop putting too much pressure on myself. I also introduce the concept of "Skill Stacking" or "Talent Stacking" which may help you think about the work you are doing differently. Even though things may not be going as you would like, there are still benefits in doing the work Hope this helps you. In this episode, I'm excited to welcome Myles Wakeham onto the podcast. Before we started recording this episode. Myles and I were chatting and we are kindred spirits in many ways. Like me, Myles was a software developer for many years. Before he got fed up with the merry-go-round of developing software, trying to sell it. Then go back and improve it. It's a constant cycle. We discuss Myles' amazing journey from learning to code as a youngster, through to moving to L.A. Myles is now an author and podcast host and helps many people to think about how they can "be unconstrained". It was interesting to hear Myles' thoughts on software development. The banking system, how to earn money without working harder and harder. Oh, and that software developers rule the world. Eye-opening stuff. Thanks to Myles for being a guest on the podcast. What happens when you start feeling stuck? You are making progress but aren't sure how to move forward, feeling lost and overwhelmed, and what to do next? This has been happening to me more and more recently. I'm trying to learn as I go, but it's slow and I'm not sure how to move forward. Many people have told me that I'm stubborn. Which I am. It's yet another first for Find Your Side Hustle. Two guests on a single episode. Not only that, they are best friends. In this episode, I'm excited to welcome Sam & Mae from Meet ERIC onto the podcast. Both Sam & Mae thought that the career advice they received at a young age was awful. They both ended up getting jobs. But this lack of sounds advice stuck with them. Like many side hustles, Sam & Mae decided to solve a problem they had experienced. And genuinely wanted to help others navigate this sometimes shocking advice. What I like about this episode is that Same & Mae didn't give up on their goal of helping others. They have to change tactics, to a point where their whole business had shifted. They started doing video production for companies, to keep things going. So they could work out the best way forward. We chat about how I have been finding working solely on Elementary Analytics for the past 6 months. My inspirations and what led me to build and market Elementary Analytics. Thanks to Jess for having me on and for letting me use the audio. You have got your product built and are working hard to get it out to the world. But, how do you get people to find, buy or subscribe to your product or service? It's hard, and it's getting harder and harder. One concept I started looking into around 18 months ago is the concept of 'Sales Funnels'. So, what are they and do they work? In this episode, I chat about my experience of trying a few over the past 18 months and how I've gone on with them. This subject is a strange one, it feels like the negative outweigh the positives at the moment. But, if I can "work this out", it will be a great way to get my software products in front of people. Without spending either thousands of hours or thousands of pounds in the process. Sponsors: Do you spend hours on end gathering Analytical information for yourself? Or your company? You have got your product built and are working hard to get it out to the world. But, how do you price the product? This has been a huge headache for me. Since I first started developing Elementary Analytics. Everyone is so quick to give you their feedback. What happens with that feedback contradicts each other and you are no closer to working this out. In this episode, I discuss how I first priced Elementary Analytics. What sort of feedback I've been getting related to the price. And how I've gone about changing the product and pricing model off the back of this feedback. In this episode, I'm excited to welcome Pascal Poredda onto the podcast. Pascal dropped me an email after listening to one of my episodes. I always ask for feedback and Pascal was kind enough to give me his thoughts. We got chatting and had a few catch-ups over zoom and it was great to hear Pascal has a few side-hustles that he is working on. Like me, he is still working a 9-5 and spends his spare time seeing if he can get a project off the ground. I'm impressed with what Pascal has put out into the world over a short space of time. We chat about the YouTube channels he has or is thinking about doing. As well as hosting a few podcasts of his own. Pascal is also building a software product, which I'm excited to see how it develops over the next few months. Thanks to Pascal Poredda for being a guest on the podcast. You've been able to hit that first milestone. The most rewarding part of working on a side hustle. Getting that first paying customer. How do you get to the next level? In this episode, I'm excited to welcome Chris Hutchings of eOpinion onto the podcast. Chris started eOpinion back in 2015 and always thought it forever be a side hustle. Bringing in a bit of extra cash each month, instead of his sole focus. Being torn between an excellent job, and eOpinion growing and demanding more time. Chris had to make a tough choice and pick between them. So glad he picked the side hustle. We discuss the positives, and negatives Chris has experienced with eOpinion. How do you get you and your product out there when starting it? It's a scary thought, using social media to promote yourself. How do you even know where to begin? I had a bit of a lightbulb moment back in May/June of 2020. I heard someone say "start creating content for the platform you consume the most". What does "Personal Brand" even mean? Is it something that social media platforms have invented out of thin air any excuse to keep people on their platform? I've chatted about this loads. Promoting a side hustle is hard, well that's what I've been finding. My default has always been to create a website for your side project. Register social media accounts as a way to promote your idea and get people to your website. Does this even work when it's just you running EVERYTHING? In this episode, I talk about how I've switched from using these "business" social media accounts to try and find customers for my projects. To using my personal social media accounts to try and get me and my products out to the world. It's been scary, hard, and a lot of work. People always ask "So, what market research have you done". This question makes my piss boil. When you're trying to get a side hustle off the ground, you haven't the time, money, motivation, or resources to do full-blown market research. You may or may not have a list of customers, probably not if you are just starting out. Alongside his 9-5, Simon has been working on his side hustle since 2007. Which, I'm happy to say, is now a business that Simon runs full-time with two other people. I think Simon was ahead of the curve. He was made redundant in 2007/2008 and knew then that he had to start something on the side to protect himself in case that happened again. We discuss the positives and negatives Simon has experienced in launching and working on his side business. The difficult task of growing and managing a client base, while still having a life. It's tough when you are grinding and hustling in your spare time. You think you haven't made progress, when in fact if you look inwards at your personal development, it's surprising to see how much you have learned.I still think I don't know anything about marketing and copywriting, but when I've gone through and made a list of online courses that I've signed up for and used. I shocked myself to see how much knowledge I have gained, as well as being able to recall a lot of the subject matter. Now I'm not saying I'm an expert. Far from it, I still need to get better and implementing things I've learned. You can check out his episode here. https://share.transistor.fm/s/30b7e93b In an earlier episode of Find Your Side Hustle, I talk about the pros and cons of both registering a business, or waiting until you have enough income coming in to cover any expenses that a side project may have. However, something I've been thinking about is biting the bullet and registering a business for myself. The conversation with my friend made me take a leap of faith and actually register said business. Let me know what you think and what your experience of registering a business has been? Have you ever registered a business? Is that the first thing you do when you come up with a side hustle idea? Or do you motor along until it's worthwhile? Over the years I have started many side projects without even considering registering as a business. I have also done the complete opposite. In one of the projects I was involved in, it was the first thing we did to "try" and look professional from the outset. At the moment as I'm still early on in the journey with a few projects, registering a business is something that I have put off until "the right time". Over the last month or so, registering an official business is something that I have been considering. In this episode, I'm excited to introduce another guest to the podcast, Ben Currier. Ben is hilarious and on the majority of his projects, he adds in a sense of fun and craziness. Like me, Ben has never been comfortable in the corporate world.
