3 Mindsets for Creating More Value

Creative Caffeine

Play Episode Listen Later May 1, 2025 8:30

“What are the levers that I can pull that are going to help me create more value?”Say you want to charge more, be more known, get better testimonials, get more respect from others… the simplest pathway is to expand the value you create for others.Value creation is often thought of as a skillset, but what if how you think about value shifts your potential for creating more of it? Here are some ways I think about creating more value…1. Make Their Vision BiggerWhen I meet with a client for the first time, my gut reaction is often to ask, “Are they thinking too small?”They might say they want to launch in one market, and I'll ask, “What would it look like to launch in five markets this year?”Thinking bigger increases excitement for projects. You want to increase excitement only to the point of slight impossibility so that the discomfort isn't too strong. We're not here to merely make happen what is expected, we're here to help make the unexpected occur. In teams, 2+2 = 4, or 6 or beyond. That is the beauty of working with others. Each person adds new capability, new insight, or possibility. Even if you're an employee, thinking this way can expand the value you bring to whoever you work with. You're not always going to follow through on every huge idea you propose, but at least you're expanding the potential reality you can help create. You want to move beyond assumed value or possibility for how well things can go, and contribute your part to create a greater whole. 2. Multiply Value by OverdeliveringPeople say, “Charge what you're worth.” I say: “Overdeliver on the project significantly beyond what you charge.”Whenever possible, you want to add to the “multiple” of value someone receives when working with you. In an ideal world, customers should get 2x-5x+ of the value that they've paid. Skewing value in the favor of your customer creates an abundance loop. Ask yourself, “How can I overdeliver on this project?” It might be sending your clients extra resources or even something as simple as remembering birthdays and sending a quick message. Some examples…Send monthly progress recaps, highlight new opportunities that weren't previously seen. Offer bonus calls to brainstorm and problem-solve.Connect your customer to people you know who can also help them. Share mini “toolkits” of templates, how-to guides, etc. with clients.3. Stay Focused on Transformative ChangeGreat products create transformative change. They transcend beyond what someone “wants” and explore and expand into what someone needs, dreams of, and has never considered before. If you do only what your customer wants you to do, you are creating products based on a view of the world with limited knowledge. The benefit of expertise and mastery is your ability to see significantly more than others in a particular area or subject. It's hard to say “no” to someone. Doing so, though, create the ability to guide and lead someone through a process that they might not have been able to previously imagine or understand. When you hire a travel agent, you don't want to just tell them what to do and have them book it for you. You want them to think of what you never thought of, make decisions you might not immediately understand, and recommend what you would never find yourself. Steve Jobs knew, simply, that people wanted to buy the latest CD player, and yet he said no so that he could create something much greater with his iPod.Creating more value isn't about just having the skills to do so – it's often understanding what's possible, having and building confidence to deliver, and being willing to explore unknown territories that may feel uncomfortable at first but help you expand what's possible for yourself and others. What mindset helps you stay focused on creating more value for others? Or what have you done as a habit that has helped you?

Errors On Death Certificates May Be Skewing Mortality Data

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the maternal mortality rate in the United States is very high compared to other wealthy countries: About 22.3 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. This is on par with China and Iran, based on UNICEF data.So why is the US maternal mortality rate so high? It may have to do with how we fill out death certificates.A study from earlier this year found that misfiling of information in death certificates may be inflating the numbers. The study authors concluded that the US maternal mortality rate was actually half of the CDC-reported rate—about 10.4 per 100,000 live births—which is in line with countries like Canada and the United Kingdom. But if death certificates can skew maternal mortality statistics by such a huge margin, what else could they be influencing? And how does our system for filling out death certificates work?To answer these questions, guest host Maggie Koerth is joined by Dr. Robert Anderson, chief of the statistical analysis and surveillance branch at National Center for Health Statistics.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. (3:00) One of the more recent articles was centered around red meat causing T2 diabetes. Another article claims intermittent fasting will cause cardiac death. (4:15) She shares a recent experience at a conference and addresses intermittent fasting. (7:00) She points out the details and explains how information was gathered. The headline is based on 31 people; however, the starting numbers of the study were significantly higher. This means that the entire study only used 1.5% of the information gathered. The report is then based on skewing the numbers. The next headline has to do with breast cancer screening. (27:00) There are very specific instances where highly extensive treatment may not have been necessary for some women. (33:00) The problem with this is that chemotherapy is toxic as well. Things like having the BRCA1 gene are not included in this, and shouldn't be; that is a different circumstance. HPV discussion: What is the current information about HPV? (39:00) Back to the breast cancer screening, Dr. Harcombe shares more information. (45:00) She shares how she personally approaches screening. They chat a bit about Princess Kate of the British Royal family and her recent hospital stay. (55:00) Belly Reduction Dr. Harcombe touches on a report about kimchi. (1:00:00 ) The claim says it can reduce "beer belly," but the standards of obesity are much different in Korea than they are in the West. A "beer belly" in Korea is a 32" waist. You also need to see who funds the studies—as usual, follow the money. Also, places like Harvard push an agenda; funding doesn't happen unless your study follows the agenda. (1:05:00) The system creates the narrative. (1:06:00) Dr. Harcombe shares what it takes to get research published; it's difficult, especially since her studies tend to go against the narrative. Have you heard this before in your teams: If we removed these students from our schoolwide data, our trends would look better. In this episode, we're tackling the myth that some students' behavior data skew our schoolwide data. Joining us in this conversation are Rayann Silva and Mari Meador from the University of Washington's School Mental Health Assessment Research and Training (SMART) Center. Rayann has done it all in education. From classroom teacher to district administrator, to state/regional school mental health training and technical assistance provider, she centers social-emotional well-being in every role she holds. In her current work, she supports education agencies and school districts to deliver evidence-based strategies that improve social, emotional, and behavioral outcomes for all. As an implementation coach, Mari supports schools in their implementation efforts. She has been a PBIS state facilitator, an assistant coordinator for the Northwest PBIS Network, and a school-based counselor and mental health associate. Mari is a forever advocate for system-level change, culturally responsive practices, and social-emotional learning. Together, we talked about the unintended consequences of excluding some students from schoolwide data, and what it truly means to include every student's experience in our schoolwide decisions. U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville debunks false media coverage and rhetoric from the Biden administration over his military nominations hold over abortion travel policy and vows to continue the fight. The U.S. Senator from Alabama says that with the issue of abortion aside, first and foremost the Biden administration and Department of Justice circumventing Congress and implementing the abortion travel policy, “is against the law.” Congress has never authorized the Pentagon to spend tax dollars to allow people to travel for an abortion, saying, “I campaigned very hard for two years to be elected in the Senate to be able to represent and give the people of Alabama an opportunity to vote on a controversial topic like this. And so you're not gonna go around me, you're gonna have to go through me and it's been interesting, they've come at me from all angles.” The former College Football Coach says he's “been called everything as a coach, but my goodness, I've never been called a terrorist and a communist.” Saying, from the beginning he's expressed his concerns over changing the abortion travel policy “with a memo instead of going through Congress, like they should.” Tuberville says, the media and the Biden administration derive their authorization from the DOJ. “First of all, I wouldn't trust them to give any answer to any question, I've seen how they've acted. “The DOJ, weren't elected, they were appointed. And I was elected and I deserve a right to vote for the people of Alabama on this and so I'm not going to accept that excuse.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Podcast Description   So much of what we believe to be true about how we parent our children is skewed by Western, dominant culture. A perfect example of this is potty training, where we're told the day a child turns two years old is when you throw the diapers out. I even did this with my own son! But is this really developmentally appropriate for all children? After working with families for the past 20 years, I strongly believe most of us are better served when we incorporate some of the rituals and traditions that our ancestors and our families of origin carried out. So much has been forgotten or even demonized as something we shouldn't be doing anymore. In this episode, I want to talk about the intersection of culture and parenting and how in many ways, we're making life harder for ourselves by not latching onto our cultural traditions. I want to remind you how reconnecting with family rituals can actually be extremely healthy for you as parents and for your child's development.  You can follow Brandi and her work @deardouapodcast on IG, @brandi_jordan_official IG, and send questions, comments and platitudes to brandi@deardoulapodcast.com. Former McDonald's CMO Jenni Dill joined the old but iconic Arnott's in the same role 18 months ago after US private equity firm KKR paid $3.2 billion for the business from Campbell's. Rather than stripping out costs in pursuit of rapid profit, the new owners are investing to build Arnott's return as a contemporary Australian iconic brand. The growth plans are ambitious and, in the case of a sell-out of Tim Tam perfume, unconventional – but this year will see Dill and her team put the foot down an accelerate an all new Arnott's. A booming retailer media sector, by the way, is promising for Arnott's growth but Dill remains pragmatic on its potential. For now, it's sitting at circa 10 per cent of the biscuit maker's budget.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Not because it is where we handle money (although that is important) but because it is where we make first impressions and guide the experience of both the customer and our coworkers. The register controls everything but we treat this station as though it is simply a place to avoid when on shift or a place to hastily put new underprepared baristas. If we hope to win people over to specialty coffee and deliver a great experience then we need to start focusing at least equal amounts of energy on how we prepare ourselves and others to working this station with the respect it deserves.  Today we are going to be discussing behaviors and habits that are core to creating an excellent service and work experience beginning at the cash register. If the obsession is always monetary, the fulfillment will never come. Why? When you're optimizing for something that, if not managed properly, can be a big stress and distraction, you won't get the feeling of fulfillment which serves as a larger measuring stick for success. We hear it time and again from industry leaders. We learn from their experience that when they finally achieved the number they thought would change their life, that their life hadn't really changed the way they thought. Don't misunderstand, money is not evil, and, as a business, there needs to be a healthy focus on it. If it's all your obsessed about, then you might find it becomes a hindrance to your overall organizational progress.

In the immortal words of Jack Nicholson, can you handle the truth? We think you can, and we’re excited to start a new series that dives into the murky world of truth-telling in our culture today: For the Love of Finding the Truth! Skewing the truth is nothing new—bias exists everywhere—but in the pre-social media era, it was a smidge easier to parse through what was real and what wasn’t. With the massive growth of online communities, there are more ways to get information than ever before—and more organizations looking to feed the information they want us to have (#fakenews). Kicking off the series are two women dedicated to sifting through the mountains of information hurled at us each day and understanding it from differing perspectives. Sarah Stewart Holland and Beth Silvers (who go by “Sarah from the left” and “Beth from the right”) stand a few feet from each other on the political spectrum, but are still friends—good friends. And they’re leading the way on how to have grace-filled political conversations, which they do each week on their highly acclaimed podcast Pantsuit Politics. Lucky for us, they wrote a whole book called I Think You’re Wrong (But I’m Listening) to remind us that relationship is always more important than being right. Plus, Sarah and Beth answer some burning political questions like: how does the Electoral College work and why is everyone in a twist about it? Gerrymandering—why should I care? And what’s gonna happen in 2020?? The Pantsuit ladies break it all down and give us thoughtful explanations and opinions, showing us how truth can be revealed through knowledge wherever you stand.

Keeping things flowing during the reception - do people dance? Will people stay until the end or cut out early? Apparel - brides have told us that they have had trouble picking a wedding dress for their brunch nuptials. Too formal? Too ‘garden party'? Is strapless ok? Tea length or floor length for the bridesmaids? Our advice is to pick the venue and the date before even beginning to start the outfit-hunt. Just like an evening wedding, your clothes will (ideally) ‘fit' the scene. At the end of the day, remember what we always say - do you! If you love it and you're comfortable, it's fine. Hair and Makeup could be VERY early if you have a lot of ladies lined up for services. Might want to think about having your rehearsal dinner on the early side so everybody is ready for an early wedding day! Light! It's going to be light out, you won't get a sunset, or have to race against darkness. We strongly suggest you visit the venue during the time that your wedding will be so you can get a good idea of the light - inside and out. You probably won't need to spend a lot of money on an AV company lighting vendor because the room will be bright enough. Maybe you need to think about draping if the light is too bright in the windows. Don't fight the light - know what you are going to get and harness it! Use what you have to your advantage. Outdoor garden wedding at 10am - perfect! Small wedding parties and live musicians are perfect for brunch. We see those two things in almost every brunch wedding we've planned or been to as a guest or ‘friendor.' Our Brunch Bride's hindsight: · We saved money on food and the venue. Because it was daytime, I felt like we got away with having a simpler menu (i.e., one entrée). Our families enjoy their beverages, so we went more typical alcohol estimates, but we could have saved more by returning what wasn't opened (mostly rose and cava for the mimosas). Finally, our venue base cost was $3k. It was double for a Saturday evening, but it seemed like rates of at least $10k-$15k were the average at other places. Spending less money on the venue meant I didn't have to skimp in other areas. · It's well suited for a Sunday. If an evening wedding was a priority for us, I would have chosen a Friday or Saturday. But Sunday meant that people in NorCal did not have to take off work, which they appreciated. · Creativity! I enjoy evening weddings where there's a fancy dinner, starry skies, and a lot of dancing. But brunch forced us to reimagine many aspects of our wedding, especially décor and music. The vibe I wanted was hip, relaxed, light, and airy. A “garden party” was the closest thing I could think because of the daytime and floral nature. I like what we came up with overall. The flowers and greenery really made it work, even though I know a lot of couples steer away from that. The DJ also did a great job with music; he understood our eclectic but rather chill taste and picked songs appropriate for the setting. And the florist killed it, absolutely loved her work. · A perk of a Sunday wedding: we got our first picks for vendors. We had a 10-month timeframe and although people were already booked on the Saturday, 10/6, they were free on Sunday, 10/7 to help us. Links we referenced none Quotes “I've learned that I cannot actually handle an unlimited mimosa brunch. It's not going to last as long as an evening wedding would.” Michelle, on the elements of brunch “Something needs to happen every thirty minutes...that's just a rule of thumb. Thank you to Knitwhisperer for their kind donation. Catching Up: (0:47) Jen saw Saint Vincent, The Book of Life, and Interstellar. She enjoyed them all. The acting is great in Saint Vincent; Book of Life is beautiful, and she definitely thinks Interstellar is definitely worth seeing, but she wasn't wild about the ending. She's been reading Game of Thrones and really liking it. They celebrated a big birthday for Ron with a really nice party and her parents came to visit. She's been spinning up her Knitpicks Wool of the Andes roving. She's trying to make a 2-ply fingering. And she went to WeFF. She had a lot of fun and won a ton a stuff in the door prize drawings and bought some really nice roving from Morro Fleece Works and RedFish DyeWorks and buttons. Laura was a vendor at WEFF and had a good day. She split her booth with Kamalei's Naturals. She bought some yarn from RedFish. She went to Disneyland with her brother and his kids. She's been watching Buffy Season 3 to prepare for the Sunnydale Yarn Club. She also finished the first half of Season 7 of Doctor Who. She's been dying a lot and trying to keep her mind off of some health concerns that are most likely nothing, but that are causing some stress. We mention Forbidden Woolery. In the Knitting Bag: (20:05) Jen has been still working on her Heirloom Layette Set by Kerin Dimeler-Laurence out of Cascade Heritage in Snow. She has not yet heard back from Knitpicks, so she will create her own edging. And she is working on the sweater instead. She's working on her plain socks out of FabFunkyFibres 15 Coloured Rainbow self-striping yarn. She started The Age of Brass and Steam by Orange Flower Yarn out of Feederbrook Farms Entropy in the colorways Nebula and Paradox--she is going to do a gradual transition between the two. She also started a plain Customfit pullover using Cascade Heritage in Deep Plum. She is doing a close-fit, 3/4 length sleeve in tunic length, with a scoop neck and seed stitch border. And finally she started the Porcupine Blanket from 60 Quick Baby Knits out of Cascade 220 Superwash. She thinks the porcupines look more like hedgehogs. Laura is working on the Motoring Madness mittens by Audrey Nicklin for her husband out of custom-dyed Dizzy Blonde DK. She is also working on Knitted Scale Mail Gloves in an Iron Man theme by CraftyMutt for her granddaughter's father. She is doing them out of Brown Sheep Worsted in the Red Fox colorway. She decided to crochet the repulsors and applique them on, instead of doing intarsia. And she continues to work on her Yggdrasil Afghan by Lisa Jacobs out of reclaimed Berroco Vintage Chunky in Mocha. She's on the applied edging and it's a lot of knitting. We mention Sock Architecture by Lara Neel. Finished Objects: (28:15) Jen finished her Chickadee Cardigan by Ysolda Teague from Little Red in the City out of Quince and Co. Chickadee in Rosa Rugosa, Slate, Egret, and Lichen. She just needs to put buttons on it, but she loves it so much she's been wearing it without buttons. The sleeves are little short for her taste, but just because she likes really long sleeves. Laura finished a hat for Halos of Hope out of Knitpicks Brava Worsted in orange, lavender, and some neutral greys and browns. PM or email Laura if you're local and have hats for Halos; she is willing to send them. Devil's Tower (31:43) Jen has been working on finishing (weaving in ends etc) on her Playful Stripes Cardigan and on her Mustachioed blanket. Laura may put her Yggdrasil in Devil's Tower to work on some gift knitting. (So she is decidedly not participating in the Knitmore Girls Grinchmas Contest). We mention Watty's Wall Stuff Frog Pond: (36:40) Luckily, we have both avoided the Frog Pond. On Deck: (36:51) Jen will make a layette based on the Baby Yours Sweater. She will make a second Playful Stripes Cardigan, the Hitofude Cardigan, and a Rockefeller for Ron. Laura will make the Night Blooming Shawlette for the Sunnydale Yarn Club KAL. She also has on the list Quinty by Bernadette Ambergen, the Death Star by Patricia Castillo,  Ink by Hanna Maciejewska, the Crochet Fan Shawl by Valerie Martin, and Art Déco and Dreambird by Nadita Swings, and the the Effortless Cardigan by Hannah Fettig. Knit Culture: (42:55) We talk a little bit of Stashdown. We loved October's entries. Congratulations to ShadowAP, you win a copy of Sock Architecture, courtesy of Cooperative Press. November's theme is food, so put your FOs in the thread. December's theme is "A Gift for Myself". Knit something that you really love. Treat yourself. Use that skein that is so pretty or work on that project that you love. We review Knitting 20th Century Art by Deborah Tomasello. We totally love this book. The patterns are really clever and inspired and there are nice overviews of modern art movements. We both appreciate the whimsy and the beauty of her patterns and we like the styling. Geek Culture: (54:39) We talk about the discovery of part of Amelia Earhart's plane. We also talk about the Rolling Stone Reader's poll about the Ten Best Stephen King books. We weigh in our favorites and would love to hear about your favorite horror books. And there is a Firefly Clue Board game. For serious. Events: (1:03:16) Stitches West is February 19-22 and both Jen and Laura will be there. Laura is vending and Jen will be taking a ton of classes, but come say hi! Vogue Knitting LIVE! is at the Pasadena Convention Center on April 17-19. Laura may take some classes and Jen may go to the marketplace.
