What happens when getting a client order feels like a burden instead of a celebration? Business strategist Sunita Kumar shares the exact moment she knew her successful health product business had to end-despite still making money. Her story reveals how our bodies send us signals long before our minds catch up, and why pushing through friction isn't always the answer. Sunita brings a unique blend of Cornell engineering, MBA credentials, and human design expertise to help seasoned entrepreneurs recognize when they're operating from an outdated identity versus their authentic design. This conversation dives deep into the difference between effort that energizes and effort that drains, exploring why so many entrepreneurs get trapped in business models that work on paper but feel misaligned in practice. You'll discover Sunita's framework for recognizing when you're in a 'to-do versus get-to' mindset, her 48-hour rule for avoiding shiny object syndrome, and how she helps clients experience what she calls 'clarity that feels like an exhale.' Whether you're questioning your current path or feeling stuck despite doing all the right things, this episode offers a fresh perspective on building a business that truly fits how you're designed to operate.Want to grow your podcast, land more guest appearances, and save hours every week? Mary and Andrew begin this week by welcoming former Assistant US Attorney Sunita Doddamani. A 20-year civil servant with an impeccable record of service, Sunita is one of the prosecutors who was recently fired as part of the DOJ's report about the prior administration's so-called “bias” against abortion protesters and religious rights in FACE Act cases. She talks openly about the "Article II" termination letter she received from Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, with no warning and like many others, seemingly just for doing her job by taking the cases assigned to her. From there, Andrew and Mary look at the administration's moves to vacate the convictions of four Proud Boys who were convicted of multiple felonies related to the attack on January 6th. Then, on to a significant decision from Judge Mehta in a long-running civil lawsuit brought against Trump, finding that the president's January 6th speech was political rather than official in nature, which would rule out immunity for official acts. And before they wrap up, the co-hosts take up the latest ruling on Judge Boasberg's contempt inquiry into whether government officials violated his court orders around those deportation flights in March of 2025. Why is it so hard to speak up even when you know something's wrong? This is the question that physician, award-winning organizational psychologist, and tenured Professor at Cornell University, Dr. Sunita Sah has been obsessed with for decades. In her illuminating book: Defy: The Power of No in a World That Demands YesShe asks us:"How many times have you wanted to object, disagree, or opt out of something—but ended up swallowing your words, shaking your head, and just going along?" And then she invites us:To imagine the life we want to lead, not the one we're willing to accept. In today's conversation we'll dive deep into the topic of defiance, Why the pressure to comply and ‘go along to get along' is a corrosive and often invisible force in our society,And, through an exploration of her revelatory research, How we can radically reframe defiance from a misunderstood negative trait into a crucial, positive force for personal and societal change. Sunita's pioneering work couldn't be more timely. In many ways it serves as a lantern for our times - Shining a much needed light on the path we can all take To stop people pleasing,To start living our truth, and to speak up when it matters most. For more on Dr. Sah, her book, speaking, and other offerings, please visit sunitasah.comDid you find this episode inspiring? There are moments when you know something does not feel right, and yet you still hear yourself saying yes. You go along. You stay quiet. You tell yourself it is not worth making an issue of it. I'm revisiting this conversation with Dr. Sunita Sah because it speaks so clearly to that experience, and to the very real reasons it can be so hard to stand up for yourself. In this episode of Love, Happiness and Success, we talk about what gets in the way of speaking up, saying no, and staying true to your values when there is pressure to do otherwise. Dr. Sah, a physician, organizational psychologist, and author of Defy: The Power of No in a World That Demands Yes, shares why so many thoughtful, capable people struggle with assertiveness and personal boundaries, especially when being agreeable has been rewarded for so long. We also talk about the hidden cost of compliance, her research on “insinuation anxiety,” and what it looks like to practice speaking up in a grounded, honest way. This conversation offers a powerful reminder that standing up for yourself is not about becoming harsh. It is about staying connected to your values and trusting yourself enough to act on them. In those moments when we want to disagree, why do we often stay silent? At those times when we want to opt out, why do we often just go along? A key reason is that it's hard to defy. It's hard to question the way something's always been done. To challenge comments, behaviors, and systems. Yet it's in those moments of defiance that we flex our values and craft an identity. That's why I wanted to talk to Sunita Sah, organizational psychologist at Cornell University and author of the book, Defy: The Power of No in a World that Demands Yes. Her research reveals the importance of defiance and the skills we need to do it well. In her book – and in this conversation – she shares ways we can practice it and support others doing the same. A spontaneous Wednesday transmission that was never supposed to happen. The moon is in Pisces. The energy is eerie. And she's angry. This is the unfiltered rant about men in backwards caps presenting "frameworks" like they invented something new, women's conferences that claim to be different but are just the same bro marketing repackaged with "hey girly" energy, and speaker applications that ask for social media follower counts. It's about being a one-line investigator in human design (perpetually curious, never satisfied, always getting nuggets), having an undefined throat that says what everyone else is thinking, and having a defined heart that gives you the confidence to actually say it—which makes you a leper. Also: why hazelnut Chobani tastes the same as sweet Chantilly (it's all emotional support creamer), why consumer packaged goods companies own all the indie brands you think are saving the environment, and why the brand name "Kumar" isn't even her name and gives her a pebble in her shoe every time she sees it. Four years ago, a spiritualist told her "you're simply Sunita." And that's the truth. This is the final transmission before going into the cave for March, April, May, June. Season 4 is wrapping. What does it really take to speak up when something doesn't feel right, especially in systems that quietly reward compliance and silence? In this episode of the Sacred Changemakers Podcast, I'm joined by Dr. Sunita Sah, award-winning Cornell professor, organizational psychologist, and one of the world's leading researchers on authority, compliance, and defiance. Dr Sah's work challenges the idea that defiance is disruptive or extreme, reframing it instead as a grounded act of integrity and courage. We explore why good people so often go along with things they don't agree with, how subtle psychological forces like Insinuation Anxiety shape our behavior, and why compliance is not a personal failing but a deeply human response to pressure. Dr Sah shares insights from her research, her background in medicine and systems leadership, and the practical frameworks she's developed to help people move from inner knowing to ethical action. This is a rich, illuminating conversation for coaches, leaders, and changemakers who sense that something essential is lost when we stay silent, and who want to reclaim their agency without becoming combative, burned out, or disconnected from their values.About Dr. Sunita SahDr. Sunita Sah is an award-winning, tenured professor at Cornell University and a leading expert in organizational psychology. Most of us were taught to be agreeable. To be easy. To be helpful. But constantly saying “yes” can drain our energy and derail our careers. In this episode from the Hello Monday archives, Jessi Hempel sits down with Dr. Sunita Sah, author of Defy: The Power of No in a World That Demands Yes, to explore why saying “no” feels so hard and why reclaiming defiance is essential to our confidence, clarity, and integrity. In her conversation with Jessi, Dr. Sah breaks down how to recognize compliance, interrupt it, and rebuild a relationship with “no” that is grounded, principled, and guilt-free. Jessi and Dr. Sah discuss: Why saying “no” triggers discomfort What insinuation anxiety is, and how it quietly shapes workplace behavior Strategies to speak up even when the stakes feel high How to break patterns of over-compliance and reclaim autonomy How to make defiance a practice How to align your “no” with your values Continue the conversation with us at Hello Monday Office Hours! In this episode of The Evolving Leader, hosts Jean Gomes and Scott Allender are joined by Dr. Sunita Sah, a physician turned organisational psychologist and Professor of Management at Cornell University. Together they explore the power of saying “no” in a world that rewards compliance. Drawing from her acclaimed book “Defy: The Power of No in a World that Demands Yes”, Dr Sah reveals how our upbringing, institutions, and social pressures teach us to equate being “good” with being obedient, and how that conditioning can silence our values. She introduces the concept of “insinuation anxiety,” the discomfort of implying distrust when we disagree, and shares how to build the courage and skill to act in alignment with what truly matters. For senior leaders, this conversation reframes defiance as an essential leadership practice, not rebellion, but integrity in action. Sah explains the five stages of defiance, the cost of compliance, and why organisations that cultivate psychological safety and intellectual humility outperform those that suppress challenge. It's a thought-provoking guide to leading with authenticity, courage, and moral clarity in complex systems where it's often easier to say yes.Further materials from Sunita Sah:“Defy: The Power of No in a Worlds That Demands Yes”, (Blink Publishing, February 2025)“The science of defiance: A psychology researcher explains why people comply – and how to resist”, (The Conversations, September 2025)“America thinks it's a country of free thinkers. In this episode of Urban Nature, Sunita Narain explores the concept of “environmentalism of the poor”, contrasting it with the technocratic, middle-class environmentalism that often externalizes costs and creates new problems while trying to solve old ones. She emphasizes equity, local knowledge, and practical solutions that consider both human needs and environmental sustainability. Narain critiques conventional approaches to climate change, urban planning, and renewable energy, highlighting the resistance of professional orthodoxies to innovative ideas. She underscores that inclusive development is synonymous with sustainable development, and stresses the need for courage, imagination, and hope in addressing global environmental crises.

It is a rare opportunity to hear about a mission to space firsthand from any NASA astronaut, and Euclid, Ohio, native Sunita "Suni" Williams certainly has an extraordinary experience to share. On June 5, 2024, she was launched on the new Boeing Starliner spacecraft for what was intended to be an eight-day mission on the International Space Station (ISS). It ended up being a nine-month stay after technical issues forced the spacecraft to return to Earth uncrewed. While her timeline aboard the ISS faced uncertainty, Williams' work and commitment to science and innovation never wavered. Together with the crew, she completed more than 900 hours of research between more than 150 unique scientific experiments during her stay.rnrnThroughout her three-decade career, Williams has logged 608 days in space over her three flights. She has also completed 62 hours and 6 minutes of total spacewalk time. That's the most of any female astronaut, and fourth on NASA's all-time list.rnrnModerating the conversation is astronaut Douglas H. Wheelock. Like his colleague Sunita, he was also selected by NASA in 1998. On October 23, 2007, Wheelock launched on his first spaceflight aboard Space Shuttle Discovery. The retired Colonel has accumulated more than 178 days in space.rnrnTo mark Ohio Space Week, and in partnership with Great Lakes Science Center, join us for an inspiring conversation between two NASA astronauts - Sunita L. Williams and Doug H. Wheelock - on what it takes to live and work in zero gravity, and the importance of space exploration today.

Psychologists Off The Clock: A Psychology Podcast About The Science And Practice Of Living Well

Sometimes saying “yes” too much can really take a toll on you. In this episode, Jill chats with Dr. Sunita Sah, a bestselling author and Cornell professor, about her book Defy: The Power of No in a World That Demands Yes. They break down how constant compliance can affect your emotions, mind, and body, and share strategies for recognizing when it's time to push back. Sunita introduces the concept of a ‘Defiance Compass' to help guide people in acting according to their values. You'll also learn about the difference between going along with something and truly giving consent, how anxiety can arise in difficult situations, and why practicing small acts of defiance can prepare you for bigger, high-stakes moments. Listen and Learn: How can redefining "defiance" from a negative act of resistance to an alignment with true values help us better understand the balance between compliance, consent, and social pressure? Why is defiance better understood as a staged process on a continuum rather than a simple yes/no choice, and how does recognizing tension help us navigate compliance?Distinguishing between true expert intuition and bias-driven gut feelings when making decisions in uncertain situationsWhy is it so difficult for people to resist compliance and obedience in high-pressure situations, and how can practicing defiance help us prepare to say no and prevent harm? How can we recognize the difference between true consent and mere compliance, and what essential elements are needed to ensure a genuine "yes"?Navigating situations where we technically have the freedom to say no, but psychological pressures like insinuation anxiety or fear of consequences make it difficult to speak upHow do insinuation anxiety and the sales pitch effect interact to increase pressure to comply, even when consent is technically present?Overcoming the tension and fear of non-compliance to act in alignment with our values using tools like the Defiance CompassHow you can practice defiance as a skillResources:Defy: The Power of No in a World That Demands Yes: https://bookshop.org/a/30734/9780593445778Sunita's Website: https://www.sunitasah.com/Connect with Sunita on Social Media:https://www.instagram.com/drsunitasahhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/drsunitasah/https://www.tiktok.com/@drsunitasah About Sunita SahDr. Sunita Sah is a national bestselling author, an award-winning professor at Cornell University, and an expert in organizational psychology. President Trump's threat to double tariffs on Indian goods, to 50%, as punishment for the country's continued purchase of Russian oil, puts India in an untenable position. The US is its top export market, but India is deeply reliant on importing energy to support the needs of its 1.4 billion people. As the world's most populous nation and one of its fastest-growing economies, India faces unprecedented energy demands and also pressure to meet that demand with clean energy. Today, around 70 percent of the country's electricity comes from coal — a major contributor to air pollution in India's large cities. So how can India meet its fast-growing energy needs while also ensuring energy affordability, equity, and public health? Where is India in making progress toward deploying clean energy? What role might conventional energy continue to play? And how does India's relationship with China factor into its decarbonization efforts? This week, Jason talks to Sunita Narain about the state of India's clean energy transition. Sunita is executive director of the Centre for Science and Environment, a research and advocacy center where she has worked since 1982. In 2016, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world.  Credits: Hosted by Jason Bordoff and Bill Loveless. Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started.Lesley Logan 0:47  Hello, you guys. Happy Fuck Yeah Friday. Welcome. How are you? This is where we do a quick, quick episode celebrating your wins. You might, you might hear your win, and it's going to be later than you sent it, so it'll be a reminder of a win you had, and you get to hear a win of mine, and hopefully that helps you see that there's like, wins happening all the time, and then some inspiration and affirmation. Lesley Logan 1:06  So okay, so I saved this back when everyone was, like, up in a tizzy about the all those rich women who went to space, and of course, there were some people who went on there who are actual scientists and have done some amazing things in this world to, like, change things. So we don't discount that there were some epic things going on there, but I remember it happening around the same time that Sunita Williams came back from she was there for 286 days. Okay, so we're gonna talk about her. I'm just gonna read the actual thing. The actual post. This is from Female Quotient, and I'll put the link in the show notes. But she was supposed to go to space for like, eight days, and ended up there for nine months. And so I remember this happened. I'm like, what if she, like, parked and just like, long term parking. Like, you went away for eight days, so you have, like, what a dog set up for eight days, but now you're gone for nine months. Like, just, can you imagine all the things? Like, do you have? All the things you need? I'm just hopefully, I don't know if she has a cycle. I'm just, like, a little worried about that. Anyways. So meet and welcome home, obviously, she's been home for a bit, but let's just talk about her, because we need to, she did not get enough press, and we have to, let's do that, Be It babes together. Sunita Williams, record-breaking astronaut, pilot and trailblazer, who returned to Earth after 286 in space with fellow astronaut, Butch Wilmore. One of the most experienced spacewalkers in the world, she holds the record for the most spacewalks by a woman. Williams, originally from Ohio, was a U.S. Navy helicopter pilot who logged 3000 flight hours and 30 different aircrafts before becoming a NASA astronaut. Fast forward eight years, and she took her first space flight aboard the ISS. Her career accomplishments are out of this world and growing. Spent 608 plus days in space, ran the Boston Marathon in space on a treadmill, oh, my God, completed nine spacewalks totaling over 60 hours, was the first person to pilot a spacecraft using only touch screen controls., was the first woman to command the International Space Station twice, among the first astronauts chosen for NASA's Artemis missions, aiming to bring humans to the moon. More Fun Facts, during her most recent mission, because of her high speed, 28,000 kilometer per hour and low gravity, Sunita technically experienced time slower than us on Earth. She grew space lettuce, helping NASA study space food production, because the ISS orbits Earth every 90 minutes, she witnessed 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets per day. Oh, my God, so Sunita Williams shows us that strength, curiousity and resilience can really take you places. Sunita, thanks for being a badass. Thank you for your 286 days on, you know, up there and like, what an inconvenience. And also, like, for just like, I mean, not being scared to do, like, some crazy stuff, like, you're just, we need more. Like, that's the news I want to hear. Why didn't I hear that? Why do I have to hear about like, Katy Perry going to space like, I don't really care. Anyways, that's just me. Lesley Logan 3:48  Okay, now it's time for one of your wins. Heather Ingram. I had an opportunity to sub a bunch of hours at a studio this week, and had two new clients in my studio as well. I had some moments of awe at how more comfortable, confident and knowledgeable I am as an instructor, and I said to myself, self, you're a great instructor. Will there always be more to learn and apply? Absolutely. But after pursuing this passion the past seven years of teaching, I'm so much more confident, and I'm attracting a great client tribe, and I'm more in tune with listening to my gut and being in practice versus perfection with clients my self practice and my business. Thanks to all the communities in Agency, eLevate, OPC, I feel grateful to know what it feels like to be firing a little bit more on all cylinders, and some days will always just be hard, but everything feels a bit better. Plus, the sun has been out in Seattle for eight days straight, so maybe that's it, too. Heather Ingram, yes, girl, yes. Oh my God. I love it so much. I love it so much. I think that's like, a huge that's such a big win. I'm just going to leave it with one win from you all just because I just want to let that all sink in. Like, how many times have you been like, investing in learning, investing in growing, investing in time and energy and understanding something? And how many of those times you sit back and go, whoa. Look what I, look how far I've come. Like, how often have you looked in the rear view mirror, like, what a badass am I? I'm like, celebrate before you hit that next peak. Like, Heather, your win, I think truly is one of the biggest wins we could have. Like, I think sometimes we think, oh, I don't have a big win because I haven't been to space yet. But like, understanding, acknowledging and celebrating like that you're doing a badass job. That is, like, probably one of the biggest wins ever. And I'm so, so stoked for you. So thank you for sharing that. Lesley Logan 5:23  All right, now it's time for one of my wins. So, you guys, I'm currently in Los Angeles visiting friends, and that's my win. I'm about to go on a big tour, our summer tour, and you'll hear more about that in the future episodes. But I have had, like, I've tried many different things on, like, oh, let's do a vacation at the end of the tour. Let's try to do some days off in the tour. And we are doing that. But most of the people are like, oh, I couldn't go on vacation before something, because, like, I have that thing on my mind. Let me just tell you, yes, the tour is on my mind, and yes, there is promo happening about it. But also I like, gotta be honest, I'm so excited to take some well-rested spa time before I go on tour. So I'm going on a spa day with some girlfriends. I'm seeing some friends I haven't seen in a long time, because we don't go to go to L.A. as often as possible, as we used to, like, just seemed like things were easier when you couldn't travel anywhere else, but where you could drive. Like, we went to L.A. almost monthly. And so here we are, like, like, I don't know when the last time we were there, so I'm just super, super excited, and that's my win. So if you plan some time off for yourself, you need to pat yourself on the back. Give yourself a high five. You just had a win. Lesley Logan 6:28  All right. Affirmation, affirmation. Be good to yourself. Be good to yourself. Be good to yourself. Are you being good to yourself? Like, what? Yes, be good to yourself. You're a badass, you're amazing. Sunita Sah (Defy: The Power of No in a World That Demands Yes) is an author, award-winning, tenured professor at Cornell University, and expert in organizational psychology. Sunita joins the Armchair Expert to discuss living up to the Sanskrit meaning of her name, why Milgram's electric shock experiment pushed her to pursue psychology, and how some of the wildest and offtrack people she knows are doctors. Sunita and Dax talk about how speaking up when you see something happening to someone else is a communal act, how Dax goes straight from tension to defiance, and whether defiance is evolutionarily maladaptive. Sunita explains the five elements that define a true yes, how we can reduce stress by clarifying and acting in alignment to our values, and tells the story of her mother's defiance that surprised her and taught her hope.
