Dr. Sunita Sah is a leading expert on decision-making, compliance, and ethical influence. A tenured professor at Cornell University, she has spent decades researching why people struggle to say "no" and how they can reclaim their voice. Her groundbreaking work has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The LA Times, shedding light on the hidden costs of compliance and the power of strategic defiance. Before becoming an organizational psychologist, Sunita was a medical doctor, an experience that shaped her insights into authority, trust, and professional ethics. Her new book, Defy: The Power of No in a World that Demands Yes, offers a practical roadmap for standing up against social pressures while staying true to one's values. A sought-after speaker and thought leader, Sunita is passionate about empowering individuals to make better decisions and challenge the status quo with confidence. In this episode, Dr. Sunita Sah provides expert insight into the psychological and social dynamics of defiance and compliance. She explains that people often feel a deep internal tension when confronted with situations that contradict their values but struggle to act due to societal conditioning, fear of consequences, or reluctance to challenge authority. Sunita shares personal stories about growing up in a strict Indian household, her journey from medical doctor to organizational psychologist, and how her fascination with compliance and influence led her to research this topic. She introduces key concepts from her book, including the "Defiance Compass," a framework for determining when and how to defy, and emphasizes that defiance is a skill that can be learned and practiced over time. She also reassures Ami about her difficult parenting moment, highlighting the importance of assessing safety before acting. Sunita's research underscores the hidden costs of compliance and how individuals can reclaim their agency by standing up for their values in meaningful ways. A South Asian Perspective: The Cultural Battle with Defiance: Ami and Sunita bond over their shared South Asian backgrounds, discussing how immigrant upbringings shaped their views on obedience, compliance, and the challenge of saying no. (03:31)The Power of a Name: Why Sunita Kept Hers: Sunita shares the story of why she didn't change her last name after marriage, despite social pressure, and how this small act of defiance can have larger implications. (04:53)The Parenting Dilemma: When Should You Defy?: Ami recounts a powerful personal story about an aggressive stranger confronting her daughter at a movie theater. Sunita walks her through the "Defiance Compass" framework to evaluate whether speaking up would have been the right choice. (18:03)Why We Comply—Even When We Shouldn't: Sunita breaks down the five psychological stages of defiance, explaining why we often freeze in the moment and default to compliance (28:02)The Hidden Cost of Saying Yes: Ami shares her struggle with ulcerative colitis and how years of suppressing her voice may have contributed to her chronic stress and health issues. Sunita discusses how unchecked compliance can take a physical toll. (34:42)Why Women (Especially) Struggle to Say No: Sunita introduces the concept of “insinuation anxiety”—the fear of making someone feel bad by rejecting their request—and why women often feel this pressure more acutely than men. (40:08)How to Build the Skill of Defiance: Sunita explains why defiance isn't just a personality trait but a learned skill, offering actionable advice on how to practice saying no in small, everyday moments. (49:05)Success, Oprah, and The Cure: In a lighthearted closing, Sunita shares her definition of success, her dream collaboration (hint: Oprah!), and her love for The Cure—tying back to the importance of being true to oneself. There are certain threads inescapably woven into our experience of being alive.Simple but profound truths which make up the tapestry of what it means to be human. One of these is impermanence. The fact that everything, by nature, changes. From the seasons, to the weather, our emotions, and our relationships. We are born, we grow old, and ultimately we die. The flow of life is inherently dynamic as things are coming together, and falling apart. All the time. And while at times impermanence can be viewed in a grim light (endings, and death),Change also means new beginnings, rejuvenation, and possibility. After Winter ends, the sun comes out, flowers bloom, and the natural landscape comes to life.  And if change is truly just a part of being alive, Then the pragmatic question is:How can we relate to this shared experience in ways that lead to living well? Over the next 3 weeks we are going to explore this question (and versions of it) in depth,With some of the great teachers, physicians, writers, and leaders of our time. Together we'll discuss themes like:Learning to relax into uncertainty, Loosening our grip of control as we aspire toward long term goals with less attachment to outcomes,The possibility of appreciating the preciousness and taking in the beauty of being alive. To kick things off today you'll hear a beautiful and often moving conversation between:World renowned meditation teacher, co founder of the Insight Meditation Society and NYT Bestselling author Sharon Salzberg, And Physician, author, and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine where she is also the Director of Inpatient Palliative Care Services, Dr. Sunita Puri. Both of whom have been the show before, but never in conversation together in this way - exploring how we might make the most of the short time we are here. For more on Sharon check out sharonsalzberg.comFor more on Sunita, including her beautiful memoir: That Good night: Life and Medicine in the Eleventh Hour please visit https://sunitapuri.com/Did you find this episode inspiring? #574: What would you do if someone in authority told you to do something that felt wrong? Most of us like to think we'd speak up, push back, stand our ground. But research tells a very different story. In fact, when Yale researchers conducted a famous experiment in the 1960s, they found that 65% of people would administer what they believed to be deadly electric shocks to another human being... simply because someone in a lab coat told them to. Today's guest has spent over 15 years studying why humans comply with authority - even when every fiber of our being is screaming that we shouldn't. And when it comes to our money, this tendency to comply with authority figures - from financial advisors to real estate agents to car salespeople - can cost us dearly. Dr. Sunita Sah began her career as a physician in the UK's National Health Service. During one particularly exhausting period as a junior doctor, she agreed to meet with a financial advisor who had contacted her at work. That meeting sparked questions that would shape the rest of her career: Why did she feel pressured to trust this advisor, even after learning he had a conflict of interest? Today, she's a tenured professor at Cornell University, where her groundbreaking research on compliance and influence has been featured in The New York Times and Scientific American. She's advised government agencies, served on the National Commission on Forensic Science, and helps leaders understand the psychology behind why we say "yes" when we really want to say "no." Whether you're meeting with a financial advisor, negotiating the price of a home, or discussing rates with a contractor, understanding the psychology of compliance could save you thousands of dollars - and help you make better financial decisions. Today's conversation isn't just about psychology - it's about protecting your wealth by learning when and how to say "no." (Conversation recorded on December 4th, 2024)     It is an unfortunate reality that the countries least responsible for the climate and ecological crises we face are often the ones most vulnerable to their effects today and in the future. India – with its population of 1.4 billion, rapidly rising temperatures, and limited resources compared to many developed nations – finds itself at the crossroads of these challenges. What do India's leading scientists and advocates have to say about coping with these extreme pressures?   In this episode, Nate is joined by environmentalist and policy advocate Sunita Narain to discuss the intricate relationship between environmental issues and development, emphasizing the need for economically inclusive solutions. She highlights India's challenges with sanitation, urban mobility, and climate change, while pushing for wiser approaches to governance and community planning. How can the moral and cultural history of India combine with science and innovation to guide policy making decisions? Why does ‘sustainable development' need to go beyond environmental considerations to include the economic availability for each nation's poorest citizens? And perhaps most importantly, how could today's challenges position India as a global leader in creating an economic system that prioritizes the health and well-being of all life on Earth?   About Sunita Narain: Sunita Narain has worked at the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), a research and advocacy centre based in New Delhi, since 1982. She is currently Executive Director of the Centre, Treasurer of the Society for Environmental Communications and Editor of the bi-monthly magazine Down To Earth. She is a writer and environmentalist who uses knowledge for change. In 2005, she was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award of the Republic of India. She has also received the World Water Prize for her work on rainwater harvesting and for her political influence in developing paradigms for community water management. In 2005, she also chaired the Tiger Task Force, at the request of the Prime Minister, to develop a conservation action plan for the country after the loss of the tigers in Sariska. Sunita Narain was a member of the Prime Minister's Council on Climate Change as well as the National Ganga River Basin Authority.   Show Notes and More  Watch this video episode on YouTube ---   Support The Institute for the Study of Energy and Our Future Join our Substack newsletter Join our Discord channel and connect with other listeners

What do you think? Send us a textHi everyone. I'm sorry for the delay in releasing this episode. In a minute, we'll get to this week's chat about how female migrant workers are treated after they return to Nepal, but first I want to share some personal news. My stepfather passed away in December, which changed everything. Like many of us he was a migrant. Born on a farm 90 years ago in northwestern Ontario, the centre of Canada, when he was a young man he moved 2,500 km away to Vancouver on the Pacific Ocean. Soon after he moved even further, across what was then Georgia Strait, now the Salish Sea, to Vancouver Island, where my family lived. After he retired, my wife and I, then living in central Canada, encouraged him to visit his hometown. But insisting that he was afraid to fly, he always said no. He also refused to make the trip by train or car. I think maybe he had just become too much of a homebody at that point, preferring to spend his time caring for his yard and small house in a small city. I dedicate this episode to my stepfather, Joe.  This week we're talking with Sunita Mainali, Executive Director of WOREC, an NGO that works on a broad range of women's issues. As I said, we're talking mainly about what happens to female migrant workers after they return from working abroad. As you'll hear, I just assumed that the focus would, and should, be on finding work for these women in Nepal. But I learned quickly that without social reintegration there can be no economic reintegration. One note: Sunita mentions the GCM. That is the Global Coordination Mechanism, an international treaty on migration developed by the United Nations.ResourcesWOREC websiteSend us feedback and ideas. Sunita Sah: Defy Sunita Sah is an award-winning professor at Cornell University and an expert in organizational psychology, leading groundbreaking research on influence, authority, compliance, and defiance. A trained physician, her research and analyses have been widely published in leading academic journals and media entities including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Harvard Business Review, and Scientific American. She is the author of Defy: The Power of No in a World That Demands Yes*. We often think of defiance as a snap judgement. Yet, it's so much more nuanced and purposeful than it often appears. In this conversation, Sunita and I explore the common patterns of defiance and how we can all do a better job of standing up for ourselves. Key Points We follow bad advice – even when we know it is obviously bad – to avoid appearing unhelpful. Defiance means acting in accordance with your true values when there is pressure to do otherwise. True defiance is not a snap judgement; it's a process. Acts of defiance are preceded by many moments of conscious compliance, when defiance is deferred. Five stages of defiance often emerge: (1) Tension, (2) Acknowledgement (to ourselves), (3) Escalation (vocalize to others), (4) Threat of non-compliance, and (5) Act of defiance. Vocalizing our concern to someone else is a key pivot point on the journey to ultimately saying no. Respond explicitly to these questions: (1) Who am I? (2) What type of situation is this? and (3) What does a person like me do in a situation such as this? Why are dalmatians often associated with firefighters and fire trucks? Is it just a mascot thing or is there more to the story? Of course, there is more to the story and this episode begins with a quick explanation. https://www.livescience.com/33293-dalmatians-official-firehouse-dogs.html The world is full of optimists and pessimists. Which is better? How do we come to be one or the other – are we born that way? What does it mean to be an optimist and are there benefits to it? These things I explore with my guest Sumit Paul-Choudhury. He is the former Editor-in-Chief of New Scientist; he trained as an astrophysicist and has worked as a financial journalist. He is also author of the book The Bright Side: How Optimists Change the World, and How You Can Be One (https://amzn.to/3W3Ndzl). Have you ever NOT spoken up at a meeting because it is just easier to go along with the crowd – even when you know you were right? It seems we have been taught that compliance and being a team player is best while defying the consensus is bad. Well maybe not. There is another way to look at this, which is why Dr. Sunita Shah is here. She believes saying no and defying conventional wisdom is often the right thing to do. Sunita Venchard has been practising homeopathy for over 25 years. She graduated from the London College of Classical Homeopathy in 1996.  In 2010 she trained in the sensation method by Rajan Sankaran and continues to study new methods and remedies. In her practice, Sunita sees a wide variety of clients online, from all over the world.  Over the years she has developed a special interest in treating anxiety and the menopause. In addition to her practice she has taught many short courses to the public to empower people to use homeopathy for themselves with confidence. Sunita was an avid reader of fiction before studying homeopathy, when that was replaced with reading books on homeopathy.  Her love, particularly of science fiction, adventure and fantasy fiction and movies together with her love of homeopathy inspired here to write her first novel, ‘Revive'.  She says, “Homeopathy never ceases to amaze me, and I have always found it somewhat magical. I wanted to write an exciting accessible novel, for teens upwards, to spread and convey these feelings;  a book that could be read and enjoyed on many levels without any prior knowledge of homeopathy,  by homeopaths and non-homeopaths  alike.  My aim was for all readers to learn or take something different from the novel.” Revive is available as an ebook on Amazon worldwide and as a paperback in some countries.  For UK https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00OYWPHCG For US https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OYWPHCG For Australia https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B00OYWPHCG For sales in other countries, search amazon for that country. This is a PREVIEW of a PREMIUM episode for paying subscribers, Meghan welcomes back writer and physician Dr. Sunita Puri, a palliative care specialist who writes with exquisite care and candor about end-of-life issues. Sunita was on the podcast a little over a year ago talking about the hidden harms of CPR, which she wrote about for The New Yorker. She's back to discuss two articles she published this summer. One in The Atlantic about how doctors deal with terminal illness in younger patients and another in The Wall Street Journal about dying at home. We've been taught to assume that a good death means dying at home, or at least not in a hospital, but Sunita points out that this can be better in theory than in practice. This is another extraordinary conversation with one of listeners' favorite guests. GUEST BIO Dr. Sunita Puri is a palliative care physician and author of That Good Night: Life and Medicine in the Eleventh Hour, a literary memoir recounting her journey to the practice of palliative care and what it means to help people find dignity, purpose, and comfort when facing serious illnesses and the end of life. Her writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Los Angeles times, Tricycle, The Wall Street Journal and Slate. This fall, she is joining the UC Irvine Medical Center faculty as the director of the inpatient palliative care service and associate professor of medicine. She was recently awarded a one-month Bogliasco fellowship for exceptional artists and has received writing residencies from Yaddo and MacDowell, among other places.
