Dr Michelle Johnston is an author and Emergency Medicine Physician. She works as a senior consultant at Royal Perth Hospital, an inner city  level one trauma centre in Australia. She is committed to clinical care and teaching, and was awarded the Australasian College For Emergency Medicine's Teaching Excellence Award.  Her first book Dustfall, released in February of 2018  is a story about medical error and its consequences. She has dedicated her career to finding the sweet spot between creativity and critical care, and believes there is a beating heart of humanity within the sometimes brutal world of emergency medicine. In today's episode we speak about Michelle's highly anticipated second novel Tiny Uncertain Miracles published 2022 by Harper Collins. From Michelle's website: "Awkward, hapless Marick is still struggling with the loss of his wife, his child and his faith when he is reluctantly thrust into the position of chaplain at a large public hospital. Shortly after arriving, he meets Hugo, a hospital scientist and a man almost as lost as Marick himself, who is working in a forgotten lab, deep in the subterranean realms of the hospital. Hugo is convinced that the bacteria he uses for protein production have – unbelievably – begun to produce gold. Is it alchemy, evolution, a hoax or even … possibly … a miracle? In the meantime, Christmas is approaching, the number of homeless outside the hospital is increasing, the Director of Operational Services is pressing Marick about his weekly KPIs, you can't buy chocolate in the hospital shop anymore, and Marick keeps waking with nightmares at 4 am every night. If ever a miracle was needed, it's now."

Is it true that women are from Venus and men are from Mars? Are men and women more alike or more different? Why do we seem to have totally different ways of communicating with one another, and how can we work together to build happier and healthier relationships?Dr. Ricky Arenson is a dual-trained Endocrinologist and Geriatrician who lives in Perth, Western Australia, with his wife of twenty years and their four children. As the head of a major hospital, working with patients who have reached 100 years of age, Ricky asked them what the secret to their longevity was… surprisingly it wasn't eating acai berries and doing yoga… it was having long-term positive relationships. His outrageously funny yet serious book ‘Women Are Superior to Men' explores why so many couples have the same arguments about how often to have sex, how men don't notice or pick up the mess they leave lying around, and how men communicate in grunts or jokes when their wives are looking for a serious conversation. It's an easy guide to creating and maintaining a magical relationship filled with love, joy, and better (and more frequent) sex.Ricky has helped over 30,000 patients, holds numerous medical awards, and was awarded a lifetime Outstanding Service Award by Royal Perth Hospital. For our 100th episode, a real treat: we speak with the inspirational Professor Fiona Wood AM, who with research partner Marie Stoner invented spray-on skin, ‘ReCell', made famous after the Bali Bombings, for which she was made Australian of the Year in 2005. Growing up in the north of England, the daughter of a fifth-generation coalminer, the self-confessed “sporty nerd” moved to London to study medicine. Emigrating to Western Australia in the '80s, she became the state's first female plastic surgeon, and in the 1990s pioneered the ReCell technology that would greatly reduce permanent scarring in burns victims. She continues to work perfecting the technique, as director of the Royal Perth Hospital burns unit and the Western Australia Burns Service, and inspire the next generation of innovators. “ It's hard. It's a long road. So you have to have that passion and belief. So it's really worth interrogating that idea, roughing it up a bit, moulding it, shaping it, so that when you go to the table, you know it inside out, and you believe in it…” ~ Fiona Wood. Relationships are beautiful, intricate webs of connection and understanding, but they can also be challenging to navigate, especially when gender differences come into play. In this episode, we delved into the complexities of how gender dynamics can impact our interactions with our partners. From the importance of attunement and nurturing attitudes to recognizing and addressing each other's needs, we explored valuable insights that can help foster healthier and more fulfilling relationships. One of the key takeaways from this discussion was the significance of being in service of the greater good within a relationship. Rather than getting caught up in defending opposing views or trying to win arguments, it's essential to shift our focus towards understanding and supporting each other's deeper needs and desires. By harnessing this nurturing attitude and seeking to understand our partners on a deeper level, we can build stronger foundations of support and care.   Melissa has often mentioned that your heart health is related to your hard health. So today, we will dig deeper into this statement with Kendall and her mentor, Dr. Nilufeur McKay. Hello Dr Nilufeur starts with the advice that you always hear - prevention is better than cure. For anything that is heart-related, the most important thing is to prevent plaque build-up. By preventing build-up, you also prevent sudden heart attacks. Very interestingly also, even for both Kendall and Melissa, is the fact that a heart attack presents very differently for men and women. Dr. Nilufeur will define what these are. Moreover, she also shares how risk factors, women's menopause, and other diseases affect the development of heart disease and vice versa. She further discusses the correlation between erectile dysfunction, heart attack, and the effect of medication (e.g., nitrates). If there is anything we want you to take away from this episode, it is this: make sure to talk to your GP/NP about the medications you are taking. Why? Because the medicine you are taking can impact the performance of your tool down there. In conclusion, Dr. Nilufeur reiterates that your health is in your hands. Know your body well and seek help when there's something amiss. Remember, you have to take care of your health for your future. This is an interesting, super digestible episode so make sure to have a listen!   Dr. Nilufeur has over 20 years' nursing experience and is a Cardiology Nurse Practitioner. She started her career at Royal Perth Hospital, coronary care unit taking care of transplant and acute cardiac patients. She then spent 7 years at the Mayo Clinic as an NP on the Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant service while completing her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree at Johns Hopkins University.   She then took a position at the University of California, San Diego as an Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant NP before moving back home to Australia in 2020. She still works clinically and is the course coordinator for the Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) course at Edith Cowan University. ---------- Websites: https://thepenisproject.org/ https://rshealth.com.au/ https://penilerehabilitationprogram.com/ http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/ http://prost.com.au/     Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Restorativeshealthclinic   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rshealth_perth/   Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissa-hadley-barrett/   Music David Mercy https://open.spotify.com/artist/1HbvnltKu4XbWTmk0kpVB9?si=D1xP5dDVQK-zzNU3rViRWg   Producer Thomas Evans: The SOTA Process https://www.instagram.com/thesotaprocess/ https://open.spotify.com/show/4Jf2IYXRlgfsiqNARsY8fi

An emotional Kim Hagdorn has returned to the 6PR studios to discuss his serious car accident in Roleystone in April 2020, when his car was hit by an oncoming vehicle head on in the hills, killing him almost for good. A first responder Jim, a deep sea diver and instructor, gave Hagdorn CPR at the scene, while Jim's wife, an anesthetist, was on the phone to her husband, directing him what to do until ambulances arrived. "There's so many people you'd like to thank ... but I wouldn't have survived had he not been there," the football expert and former 6PR sports broadcaster told Millsy at Midday host Steve Mills on Tuesday. "Between the two of them they kept me going ... but I haven't wanted to know what happened." Hagdorn flatlined three times but insists there was no light at the end of the tunnel. "I experienced death... there's nothing out there, you just don't know that you're gone," he said. 'The light came I reckon four or five days later you know when your family, my wife Helen was there, and she's been amazing since.. you know, your kids, your son, your daughter. Great friends, there's been people by your bedside that just made sure they were there, even though I didn't want people to come in but some of them just said 'look I have to see you, you know, so'."  "But I don't remember the first four or five days at all, you know I had a bad concussion as well, a massive, a really big whopping carton on the head too." The hospital experience was another eye-opener for the dogged journalist, who lost 20kg while recovering over 11 weeks in Royal Perth Hospital. "Some of the traumatic circumstances I had with the heart troubles and the lungs, the clotting, and just a team of people just turn up with machines and buttons and buzzers ringing, there'd be a dozen or 15 people in your room, every one of them with some degree of expertise that they had to handle to keep this patient alive."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After a short break from the podcast, This Emergency Life returns for its second season in 2021. To start the season we bring you a conversation with Emergency Physician, author and Fellow of the Australian College for Emergency Medicine Dr Michelle Johnston.Born and trained in Perth, Michelle works at Royal Perth Hospital, an inner-city trauma centre. Her specialties are “meetings-avoidance, mess, critical care, violence, and the crumbling fabric of society”. She is also heavily involved in teaching the fellowship program to the “bright young things of Emergency Medicine”.Her area of interest is literature: writing, story-telling, uncovering the poetry in pathology and finding the beating heart of creativity in critical care medicine. In this first episode for 2021 we spoke with Michelle about how we manage errors in the ED and her first book, Dustfall, published by UWAP in 2018. Dustfall is a story about both medical and corporate error, set up in the razed asbestos mining town of Wittenoom in Western Australia. The book was UWAP's third biggest seller and was short-listed for the MUD literary prize. Her second novel titled A Small Matter of Faith is completed and with a literary agent for spruiking. Michelle also writes a regular column for Emergency Medicine News, and contributes to the literary section of the medical blog Life in the Fast Lane. She also runs workshops for both doctors and normal people about creativity and writing skills.Michelle was a delight to talk to and we highly recommend that you read her novel and catch up with her internet scrivenings and Twitter posts - you won't be sorry.

Yep, there's an app for everything and now there's a nursing app for helping you survive your shift! This is a nursing app that aims to help stave off burnout and enhance your wellbeing. Athol Hann has created this by considering what he calls, the "touch points" for nurses and midwives that create stress. It aims to help with the key hot spots for nurses: unpredictable schedules, poor lifestyle habits, pay errors, difficulty unwinding after work and disconnection from our teams. Fundamentally, Athol wants this nursing app to help us focus on self-care. One of my most favourite quotes is delivered by Athol in this interview beautifully, when he talks about self-care: "Self care is about your giving the best of you, not what's left of you" Athol Hann is the founder of Fwards as well as a Clinical Emergency Nurse. From a dairy farm in country Victoria, he found a calling to help and learn more about people. Starting off his nursing career at Royal Perth Hospital, Athol has had the opportunity to work in a diverse array of settings across the country. Getting through the otherside of burnout, Athol found a deep desire to help others avoid the emotional turmoil of going through burnout. This has led to the creation of the nursing app fwards and The Fwards Thinking Nurse Facebook group. The nursing app and facebook group work alongside each other to support nurses to manage the demands of shift work and track how shift work affects their health and well-being.
