Angela presents once more, her most popular episode of 2024, in which she talks to the remarkable Dr Sara Gottfried, about a wide-ranging array of aspects impacting women's health, including hormones, perimenopause, and postpartum depression. Dr. Sara highlights the impact of hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause, emphasising the importance of understanding triggers and dysregulation. She also delves into the effects of stress, immune system changes, and metabolic shifts during this transition. The conversation touches on topics like mitochondrial function, hormone therapy, PCOS, and postpartum depression, exploring both biological and environmental factors that contribute to women's health challenges. KEY TAKEAWAYS Hormonal fluctuations during perimenopause and postpartum can lead to various symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, and depression. Strategies like interval training and red light therapy can help stimulate mitochondria and improve energy levels. In the first part of a very special two-part conversation, Angela talks to the remarkable Dr Sara Gottfried, about a wide-ranging array of aspects impacting women's health, including hormones, perimenopause, and postpartum depression. Understanding these changes and seeking support can help manage these transitions effectively. Monitoring mitochondrial function, especially in women over 40, can help address issues like fatigue and energy depletion. Strategies like interval training and red light therapy can help stimulate mitochondria and improve energy levels. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex condition with various phenotypes and metabolic implications. Understanding individual symptoms and addressing them through lifestyle changes, exercise, and proper nutrition can help manage PCOS effectively. Postpartum depression can be influenced by hormonal changes, lack of support, sleep deprivation, and psychological stress. Identifying risk factors like genetic predispositions, inflammation, and nutrient deficiencies can help in early intervention and management. BEST MOMENTS "I think the pandemic definitely changed our biology, mostly, not for the better." "I feel like perimenopause and menopause needs to be rebranded. We need to be a lot more honest about some of these changes that are happening." "I think it's really important to understand that postpartum thyroiditis, development of autoimmunity is really common." "I did have quite a dominant father and I was a real daddy's girl but I also wonder whether familial position plays a part in this." In her precision medicine practice, Dr Gottfried noticed a seemingly unusual pattern: many of her patients who suffer from autoimmune disease and symptoms have a history of trauma. Dr Gottfried has created a powerful programme designed to break the vicious cycle of autoimmune disease, reset your immune system and restore your health, with advice on diet, sleep, supplements, breathwork, microbiome restoration, somatic therapy and much more. Polycystic ovary syndrome, commonly known as PCOS, is a is a hormonal disorder that can lead to numerous symptoms including irregular periods, weight gain, and excess body hair. PCOS, is one of the main causes of infertility affecting as many as 5 million people in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Learn about this condition and how it's managed from Enloe Health's OBGYN, Celeste Bailey Pace, MD, on this episode of Health Matters.
In this lecture, Professor Ben Bikman delves into the metabolic aspects of female infertility, specifically focusing on the influence of insulin resistance. He begins by highlighting the high prevalence of infertility among women of reproductive age, with up to 15% affected globally, and particularly prevalent in regions with high rates of insulin resistance, such as Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East.Insulin resistance, a condition where cells become less responsive to insulin, plays a crucial role in female infertility. Dr. Bikman explains that insulin resistance manifests in two main aspects: disrupted insulin signaling in cells and elevated blood insulin levels, known as hyperinsulinemia. These disruptions affect various stages of reproductive physiology, including oocyte development, ovulation, and implantation.Dr. Bikman then provides a detailed explanation of the ovulatory cycle, emphasizing the interplay of hormones such as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol, and luteinizing hormone (LH) in regulating follicle growth, ovulation, and corpus luteum formation. He discusses how insulin resistance can interfere with this process, leading to poor oocyte quality, failed ovulation, and complications with implantation. The lecture further explores conditions associated with insulin resistance and female infertility, notably polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Dr. Bikman explains the Rotterdam criteria used for diagnosing PCOS, which include irregular ovulation, signs of hyperandrogenism, and ovarian cysts. He elucidates how insulin resistance contributes to the development of PCOS by inhibiting aromatase activity, leading to reduced estradiol production and disrupted ovulation. Finally, Dr. Bikman discusses treatment approaches for PCOS, including the use of insulin-sensitizing medications like metformin and dietary interventions such as low-carbohydrate or ketogenic diets. He underscores the importance of addressing insulin resistance to improve ovulatory function and mitigate the most common form of female infertility.(00:01) Introduction to Female Infertility and Metabolism(01:14) Global Prevalence of Female Infertility and its Association with Insulin Resistance(02:23) Understanding Insulin Resistance and its Impact on Female Reproductive Physiology(05:30) The Ovulatory Cycle and the Role of Hormones in Reproduction(11:14) Effects of Insulin Resistance on Oocyte Development and Ovulation(13:27) Impact of Insulin Resistance on Implantation and Uterine Health(17:19) Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and its Relationship with Insulin Resistance(33:44) Treatment Approaches for PCOS: Medications and Dietary InterventionsLearn more at https://www.insuliniq.com#pcos #pcosawareness #PCOSTips #PCOSJourney #PCOSCommunity #PCOSFight #PCOSWarrior #FertilityJourney #InfertilityAwareness #TTC #FertilityTips #FertilitySupport #InfertilitySupport #ConceptionJourney #FertilityTreatment #PCOSandFertility #InfertilityStruggle #PCOSAwarenessMonth #IVF #FertilityHealth #FertilitySuccessStories Hosted on Acast.
