Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack The UK is, let's face it, stuck in the shit economically, socially and now most worryingly geopolitically. The change of management from Sunak to Starmer hasn't changed very much for the ordinary citizen, except maybe for the branding and the louder drumbeats of war. Rejoining us to talk about it all is listener favourite, outspoken commentator and now Professor Emeritus Richard Murphy. We need a new song. This week: Nigel's gang – Reform's plan for power. Look at any opinion survey or poll, and it's clear that Reform is hard to dismiss, write Katy Balls and James Heale. Yet surprisingly little is known about the main players behind the scenes who make up Nigel Farage's new gang. There are ‘the lifers' – Dan Jukes and ‘Posh George' Cottrell. Then there are the Tory defectors, trained by Richard Murphy, a valued CCHQ veteran, who is described as a ‘secret weapon'. The most curious new additions are the Gen Zers, who include Tucker Carlson's nephew, Charles Carlson, and Jack Anderton, known as ‘the Matrix'. Katy and James joined the podcast to lift the lid on Nigel Farage's inner circle. (02:14) Next: is technology a help or hindrance when it comes to missing people? While smartphones are no doubt useful in emergency situations, they create the expectation that you will always be in touch – when sometimes, of course, you can't be. But what happens when technology fails? Ross Clark tells the hilarious story of how he mistakenly became a ‘missing person' after his phone died while hiking in Scotland. Ross joins the podcast to unpack the lessons from his day getting the full Lord Lucan treatment, alongside journalist and political correspondent for GB News Katherine Forster. Katherine's sons, who used smartphones to track a hiking route, went missing last year in Bali when their phones died and they were unable to contact anyone. (17:33) And finally: how do you make Bond great again? James Bond seems to have lost his way. Gone is the charm, wit and romp of the original Connery and Moore Bonds, replaced by a grittier, more vengeful Bond with bloated plotlines that are far too referential. Amazon – which took full ‘creative control' of the franchise this week – faces quite the task in rebooting the world's most famous spy once again. Journalist Madeline Grant gives her prescription in the magazine on how to save Bond, but we are joined on the podcast by William Boyd, who is part of an elite class of authors to have written their own James Bond novels. (28:29) Hosted by William Moore and Lara Prendergast. Produced by Oscar Edmondson and Patrick Gibbons.

Plus regular features Grin And Share it and Troll With It. ***SPONSOR US AT KO-FI.COM/QUIETRIOTPOD*** Kim: “Gary Cohn, who was Trump's economic adviser in the White House [in 2017], tells the story of how, when crazy ideas came up from some of the real ideologue Trump supporters, on tariffs and things like that, he would get tipped off by a friend in the outer office, go in and steal them and bury them in the deepest cupboard.” Kim: “If agencies receive instructions which they believe are mad or damaging to US security, they will resist. Trump had huge rows with the CIA and FBI in his first term. I think that pattern will continue, especially with Tulsi Gabbard in charge.” Kim: “[The new UK-US Ambassador] will need to be ready for the 5AM twitter-storm. He will wake up reach for his phone and post anything that has caught his eye and there is no filter. It's pure Trump. There's nobody sitting there at five in the morning saying, Mr President you shouldn't do that.” Naomi: “Farmers have many reasons to feel angry and let down. Brexit has hurt them: lost EU subsidies, difficulty in hiring seasonal workers, the extra cost of importing goods or importing seed, chemicals, and other things they need, but also trade deals which put them at a competitive disadvantage.” Alex: “We have become addicted to very cheap, low quality food. Good food costs money to produce. So, there is truth to the farmers' core complaint which is that, on the whole, as a country, we don't appreciate their work and the thing they produce sufficiently.” Alex: “Farage has cost farmers more money through Brexit than any inheritance tax. Now he's cosplaying in tweed from head to toe, marching alongside them. Tractors came to Whitehall in March, to protest the trade deals Badenoch signed. Now she's making speeches and being applauded. How can I take them seriously? Where are their principles?” GRIN AND SHARE IT Reporting on the wider effects of Sadiq Khan's free school meals policy in the Mirror. Send us a Text Message. On 27 October 1927 a number of local fishermen died when a strong gale rose without warning. The fishermen were fishing for mackerel in the Atlantic Ocean, near Cleggan in county Galway. Many men came from the nearby village of Rossadilisk which resulted in the fishing village becoming abandoned. Nine of the men came from the island of Innisbofin and twenty from County Mayo. Due to fishing being the main industry in the area, the disaster was devastating to local families.Following the disaster, funds were raised in the United Kingdom, United States and Australia to help support local families. TG4 produced a documentary on the disaster, and various songs and poems have been written by people such as Saoirse Mhór and Richard Murphy. I will share the lyrics of Patrick Tierney.Support the Show.Irish Mythology - Mythical Cycle - Book of Invasions
David Powell appeared on John Drummond's TNT show recently with a worrying take on the proliferation of Freeports and Special Economic Zones across the UK and the sinister forces which may lie behind them. This is in marked contrast to the reassuring statements being made by the Scottish Government in relation to Green Freeports. Let us know what you think about both perspectives! David is a senior lecturer in Fine Art at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, and describes himself as a "reluctant" political activist. Richard Murphy is a professor of accounting practice at Sheffield University Management School, a chartered accountant and an economic justice campaigner. He joins AccountingWEB for a new episode of No Accounting for Taste. Discussion begins on Labour's plans to raise an extra £5bn a year by tackling tax avoidance. Murphy offers his take on whether shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves is looking in the right places and whether she is speaking to the right people. Murphy's taxing wealth report is shared as he discusses that with certain measures, £90bn could be raised. Talk then turns to the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales's (ICAEW) annual accounts being recently published. The team alongside Murphy looks at the funds paid to the ICAEW as a result of fines and penalties given to chartered accountants, whether things have changed in the accounts and what's next for the reserves.
The UK's Foreign Secretary is in America to lobby for more funding for Ukraine. Our Managing Editor Brendan Scott explains Britain's changing role on the world stage and speculates how Cameron's meeting went with former president Donald Trump. Back at home, Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves is also trying to raise some cash by tightening up non-dom rules. Founder of Tax Research, Richard Murphy, tells us Labour should go after small businesses and sole traders not paying their fair share. Plus, how does the economy change if the next generation are still living with their parents? Bloomberg's economy reporter Tom Rees explains. Hosted by Yuan Potts and Lizzy Burden. Friends of the Rosary: We pray today's Joyful Mysteries from St. Michael the Archangel Parish, in Greenwich, Connecticut. Fr. Richard Murphy leads the Holy Rosary. In the reading today (Lk 18:9-14), Lord Jesus says: “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” The Son of God addressed the parable of two people who went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee prided himself on being the perfect religious practitioner. The tax collector was ashamed of his sins and asked mercy from the Lord. The Divinity loves people humble in spirit and who ask for mercy. The arrogant are far from the Kingdom. Is the Bank of England working in our best interests – and what could it do differently that might serve us better? While the last recession was met with a response of ‘quantitative easing', the next is due to be met with ‘quantitative tightening'. Richard Murphy, professor of accounting practice at Sheffield University, author of the book Money For Nothing and king of the Twitter macroeconomic mega-thread, talks to Justin Quirk about what the central bank is up to. “Quantitative tightening is the opposite of quantitative easing – this means the government spends into the economy.” “Quantitative tightening really shows that the Bank of England doesn't care.” “Rishi Sunak doesn't want there to be a recession, because he won't win the next election.” “The public don't know how to ask or answer big questions – and politicians aren't helping.” www.patreon.com/bunkercast Written and presented by Justin Quirk. In search of Canada's next gold discovery, Manitou Gold (MTU:TSXV) sees billion dollar deposit potential on their Goudreau project in Northern Ontario. Manitou controls 100% of the project in Northern Ont. where they are accelerating exploration in search of Canada's next gold discovery, and maybe a mine; and now Nickel has been added to the discovery list with a 3 hole program all returning over 200 meter intersections of Nickel. The Goudreau Project has 2 Zones, separated through faulting. The “Goudreau-Lochalsh Deformation Zone” has seen multiple discoveries by other companies that have committed multi-million dollar exploration budgets to explore the area ( Trillium Mining, Alamos, Argonaut Gold ). The zone was recently confirmed as an emerging 'Juggernaut' for gold production with nearly 10 Moz of gold resources and reserves being developed and mined on Manitou's western flank. The “Baltimore Deformation Zone” is an offset of Goudreau and is a 17KM trend of highly prospective gold targets for exploration in an area that is underexplored. The Baltimore Deformation Zone can be compared to the Destor -Porcupine fault where many deposits and millions of ounces of gold have been identified. The Gold camp it helped create has become synonymous with gold. This is why management believes they have multiple shots at finding a billion dollar deposit and not just as a gold discovery, but that of nickel as well. The Baltimore Zone has a 10 km trend that has never been systematically explored, it is going to take allot of drilling and Manitou has demonstrated their commitment with multiple increases to their drill program in order to define a discovery. Their commitment to drilling this vastly unexplored area may have just paid off as they have made a very significant Nickel discovery. Manitou announced that they Identified Nickel-Iron alloy in drill core, outlining a 60 km structural trend highlighting large tonnage Nickel & Gold potential. The recently completed 3 hole program all returned intercepts of 200meters plus of 0.25% nickel equivalent. They are an indication of something potentially bigger lurking beneath the surface, something of greater magnitude may be present. The discovery can be compared compared to Canada Nickel's Crawford deposit, located in Timmins, and the Dumont nickel deposit, located in Quebec. Not only does Manitou control a gold focused company within 366Square km land package, they now have a Nickel discovery within that same land package and are creating a whole new Pubco to support Nickel Cobalt and PGE Discoveries without taking away from the gold focus. A definite Win Win for Manitou shareholders as they receive 80% of the new company Meet Western Nickel, a spinout courtesy of the recent nickel discovery on the Goudreau Property. With a potential discovery area this big, they are going to need help, and boy do they have it. They aren't going to be doing this alone. Manitou is supported by 2 majors in Alamos (AGI) and O3 Mining (OIII ) who are providing Board Representation, Treasury Support and Technical Guidance for exploration. Lastly, Manitou isn't alone in the area. They are surrounded by Majors, one who also happens to be Alamos ( operator of the high grade Island Gold Mine and Manitou partner ) and Argonaut Gold (AR) who are preparing for production in 2023. Sit back and enjoy this great interview with CEO Richard Murphy as explains why Manitou is the next Smallcap discovery stock to own in one of Canada's largest gold and now Nickel camps in the search of Canada's next billion dollar deposit.
Listeners loved the last podcast with Economic Justice campaigner, Accounting Professor and Co-founder of the Green New Deal, Richard Murphy, so he's back now to tell us about the new UK Prime Minister, Lizz Truss and her cabinet of right wing die-hard neoliberals. We discuss how unlikely this new government are to "deliver" for the people suffering from inflation and the cost of living crisis, what it means in the modern parlance to be a failed state and just how bad could it all get in the months ahead. So gloomy topics, but Richard also puts forward some more optimistic alternatives. We also look at what this all means for Ireland, the NI Protocol and that awful word stability. Manitou announced that they Identified Nickel-Iron alloy in drill core, outlining a 60 km structural trend highlighting large tonnage Nickel & Gold potential, identification of three structural trends with over 60 km cumulative strike length. In doing so they have identified awaruite, a naturally occurring nickel alloy with high nickel content. The key benefit of nickel-iron alloys ores over nickel-sulphide ores is that concentrates do not need smelting prior to further processing and shipping to refineries. The discovery can be compared compared to Canada Nickel's Crawford deposit, located in Timmins, and the Dumont nickel deposit, located in Quebec. It was a pleasure to be joined by Economic justice campaigner. Professor of Accounting Practice, Sheffield University. Chartered accountant. Political economist. Co-founder, the Green New Deal, Richard Murphy. We discuss the economic icebergs the Bank of England (and prospective Conservative leaders) seem determined to steer towards. Why neoliberalism has failed and how to build stories about a better way. Richard discusses how the Green New Deal can be a win for the 99% and the importance of the role of the State in getting us there. We also touch on the macroeconomic picture and ask are the markets correct in betting against this inflationary cycle continuing in the long-term. What is the future of the Monarchy? A pageant, a star-studded concert, street fairs and picnics; it was a joyful four-day tribute to the Queen and millions revelled in her Platinum Jubilee. Seventy years of service, celebrated in true British style. But now the bunting is down and the carnival is over, how committed are we, as a nation, to the monarchy? A recent poll suggests that about 62% are in favour of retaining it, down from three quarters a decade ago. About 22% would prefer an elected head of state. It's all much closer among young people, with only a tiny majority of 18-24 year olds saying they want to stick with the monarchy. Many people love the Royal family and how the Queen has helped the UK to stand out in the world, providing long term stability, untainted by politics. Others despair at the behaviour of younger Royals, whose lives can more resemble a soap opera than the bedrock of the nation's sovereignty. But what is the moral case for the monarchy? For some, the very idea of an unelected figure with huge inherited wealth, enjoying the top position in the land, is simply intolerable. It legitimises, they say, the worst aspects of our age-old class system and should be abolished. As the tributes from around the world attest, there is deep and wide respect for Queen Elizabeth. But how might public opinion on the monarchy change in the future? Might a new system, with a democratically elected head of state be more morally defensible and serve the country better? With Tracy Borman, Martha Gill, Sean O'Grady and Richard Murphy. Producers: Jonathan Hallewell and Peter Everett Presenter: Michael Buerk
