To support muscle growth in menopause, you need to understand the critical role of liver health. If you're struggling with muscle loss and fat gain, your liver is an essential player in the game. Stick with me as we uncover actionable strategies for boosting liver health and achieving muscle growth in menopause and beyond during this moment in time post pandemic. My Guest: Sara Banta is a certified Dietary Supplement Professional, member of the National Association of Nutritional Professionals, and founder of Accelerated Health Products, recognized as the Most Innovative Supplement Company. Sara pioneers innovative solutions to support holistic well-being. She empowers others to achieve optimal health through supplements, DNA-based nutrition, and lifestyle changes. Questions We Answer in This Episode: [00:10:53] How is the liver related to muscle growth in menopause? [00:20:31] How can certain proteins help you reach fitness goals, while others may actually get in the way? [00:22:53] Why are essential amino acids crucial for supporting muscle building? [00:31:21] How can you take care of your liver to help with muscle gain and fat loss? [00:40:20] What are the side effects of GLP-1? [00:42:50] What are safe alternatives to ozempic? Liver Health's Role in Menopausal Muscle Growth Roles: detox, bile production, hormone regulation, protein metabolism. Chemicals and toxins overload the liver, impairing fat and protein processing. Protein Intake Challenges & Solutions Protein intake alone isn't enough without liver support. Women need more protein with age, not less - 1g protein per pound of body weight. Wild animal protein, like bison and venison, are most nutrient dense. Warning against mold and hidden toxins in common protein powders. Essential Amino Acid Supplements Key ingredients: HMB, Synactive, OKG, TMG - aimed at absorption and recovery Benefits: prevent muscle breakdown, enhance gut health, better protein absorption. Key Takeaways for Muscle Growth in Menopause: Liver function is foundational for hormone balance, energy, and muscle development during and after menopause. Most women are under-consuming quality protein and not absorbing it effectively due to liver or gut issues. Supplements can be powerful, but they must be clean, effective, and well-formulated—many aren't. Shift your mindset: It's not about shrinking your body but about strengthening it with muscle. Bloat, brain fog, fatigue, and poor recovery may all link back to impaired liver detox and insufficient amino acids. Whole, wild animal proteins are superior due to nutrient density and bioavailability. Connect with Sara: Get your Accelerated Health Products - Liver Care & Aminos here! In this episode of the Gutsy Health Podcast, Dr. Rodgers and Juanique Grover unpack the powerful connection between liver health and hormone balance — and why true healing starts far upstream. They explain the "order of healing" (mindset → mitochondria → gut → liver → hormones) and why treating hormone issues without addressing liver health leads to more problems down the line. You'll learn how CIRS impacts mitochondria and hormone production, why the liver is crucial for hormone detoxification, and how sugar, insulin resistance, and gallbladder dysfunction tie into it all. They also break down why traditional lab ranges often miss liver stress, why cholesterol is a key liver marker, and how healing your liver is foundational for restoring energy, brain function, fertility, and overall vitality.Helpful LinksTake the Root Cause Quiz to uncover hidden imbalances.Explore the Liver Reset Program to deeply support liver health.Free Detox Class: https://www.mygutsyhealth.com/detoxKey TakeawaysHormones are a symphony; imbalance creates dysfunction.True healing order: mindset → mitochondria → gut → liver → hormones. The liver is essential for detoxifying and converting hormones.CIRS severely disrupts mitochondrial energy and hormone balance.Signs of liver dysfunction: fatigue, mood swings, skin issues, heavy periods, brain fog.Proper nutrient absorption is critical for liver and hormone health.Cholesterol (made in the liver) is the backbone for hormone production.High LDL and insulin resistance often signal liver distress.High fructose consumption (especially from processed foods) damages liver function.Gallbladder health is critical for fat digestion and hormonal support.Post-gallbladder removal: ox bile supplementation is important.Healing liver and gut health leads to natural hormone balance — without relying solely on bioidentical hormones.Optimal lab ranges (not just "normal") are key for assessing liver and hormone health.Episode TitlesThe Hormonal Symphony: Finding BalanceHealing Order: Mindset to Liver HealthLiver's Role in Hormonal HarmonyCholesterol: The Hormone PrecursorCIRS: The Hidden Factor in Hormone HealthChapters00:00 — The Symphony of Hormones03:01 — Understanding the Order of Healing06:10 — The Role of the Liver in Hormone Health09:02 — Cholesterol, Hormones, and Liver Function12:06 — CIRS and Its Impact on Hormones14:56 — Symptoms of Liver and Hormone Dysfunction17:57 — The Importance of Balance in Hormone Treatment23:08 — Understanding Liver Enzymes and GGT26:04 — The Role of Insulin and Cholesterol in Liver Health30:48 — The Impact of Sugar and Fructose on Liver Function35:10 — Recognizing Liver Stress and Functionality37:39 — Gallbladder Health and Its Importance46:01 — Balancing Hormones for Optimal HealthLove what you're hearing? If you enjoyed this episode of the Gutsy Health Podcast, please take a moment to rate and review the show! The Missing Piece in Your Midlife Health: Why Your Liver Deserves More LoveYou're doing all the right things—eating well, moving your body, prioritizing sleep—but if your liver isn't functioning optimally, your metabolism, hormones, and energy levels could still be working against you. Most of us don't give our liver much thought until something goes wrong, but this powerhouse organ is working 24/7 to detoxify your body, regulate blood sugar, balance hormones, and support fat metabolism. And yet, 30-40% of adults—many of them women in midlife—are silently struggling with fatty liver disease without even realizing it. Why? Because liver issues often show up as fatigue, stubborn weight gain, brain fog, poor sleep, and increased inflammation long before standard lab work sounds the alarm.Dr. Supriya Joshi, a liver specialist and gastroenterologist, is back to shed light on why midlife women are at a higher risk of liver dysfunction and how taking care of this vital organ can have a ripple effect on everything from weight loss to longevity. Did you know that postmenopausal women are twice as likely to develop fatty liver compared to their younger counterparts? Or that simple, everyday habits—like strength training and even drinking coffee—can improve your liver health? The best part? Your liver has an incredible ability to heal—sometimes in just a few months with the right approach. Whether you're dealing with stubborn weight, hormonal shifts, poor sleep, or just want to optimize your long-term health, supporting your liver is one of the most overlooked (yet powerful!) things you can do.Check out Dr. Joshi's new website, where she offers a masterclass on liver health and information about her 1:1 liver health coaching. You can find Dr. Supriya Joshi at:WebsiteInstagramSend us a text_________________________________________Are you ready to reclaim your midlife body and health? In today's episode of Barbell Shrugged the team digs into liver health, biomarkers, and optimization. The liver is a remarkable organ that performs numerous essential functions necessary for our overall well-being. Maintaining a healthy liver is vital, and understanding the role of biomarkers and optimization can help us achieve that goal. Our lifestyle choices significantly impact liver health. Unhealthy habits such as a processed food-heavy diet, excessive alcohol consumption, sedentary behavior, and chronic stress can damage the liver. On the other hand, adopting a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, regular exercise, stress management, and moderate alcohol consumption promotes optimal liver function. Biomarkers play a crucial role in assessing liver health. These measurable indicators, including liver enzymes like ALT and AST, bilirubin levels, and imaging techniques like ultrasound and MRI, provide valuable insights into liver function and overall health. By monitoring these biomarkers, healthcare professionals can identify inflammation, damage, and diseases such as fatty liver disease or viral hepatitis at an early stage, enabling timely intervention and prevention of further damage. Diet is a key factor in optimizing liver health. A nutrient-rich diet low in processed foods, added sugars, and unhealthy fats supports liver function. Foods such as leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats like avocados and olive oil provide necessary nutrients and antioxidants for the liver's detoxification processes. Supplements and herbs can also aid liver health. Milk thistle, containing silymarin with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, has been used for centuries for its hepatoprotective effects. Other supplements like N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and turmeric have shown potential benefits in supporting liver health. It's important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new regimen to ensure personalized guidance. Alcohol consumption significantly impacts liver health. Excessive and chronic alcohol consumption leads to inflammation, fatty liver disease, and cirrhosis. Practicing responsible drinking by limiting alcohol intake and incorporating alcohol-free days is crucial for liver protection. Mental well-being is intertwined with liver health. Chronic stress and poor mental health can affect liver function. Implementing stress management techniques such as meditation, exercise, and seeking support from loved ones or professionals can reduce stress levels and support liver health. In conclusion, optimizing liver health through lifestyle modifications, biomarker monitoring, dietary adjustments, responsible alcohol consumption, and stress management is essential for overall well-being. Prioritizing a healthy lifestyle and seeking professional guidance can make a significant difference in supporting the liver's vital functions. Remember, a healthy liver leads to a healthier life. The liver is an organ that does many important things for the body, from reducing inflammation to detoxifying damage from inflammation. To support the liver, one should consume foods that support antioxidant production. Antioxidants help reduce inflammation throughout the body and help protect the heart, brain, and digestive tract from damage. Stress is a major cause of inflammation, and the liver will work overtime to try to reduce it. Consuming foods that support the liver's functions is essential to maintaining good health. The liver produces antioxidants, such as glutathione and NAC (acetylcysteine), which have pro, neurogenic and neuroprotective properties. Glutathione is often given via IV, while NAC is a precursor to glutathione and can be taken as a supplement. The World Health Organization recognizes NAC as an essential medication. In order to support the production of antioxidants, the liver needs nutrients such as vitamins B6, B9, B12, B2, B3, lgutamine, and methionine. The liver also helps regulate hormones, which are signals sent to the brain in response to stress. When we wake up, our body starts producing different hormones as a result of being awake. The liver is a key organ when it comes to hormone regulation. It produces cortisol, which is released to give the body energy in the mornings. It is also responsible for the regulation of thyroid, adrenal, and other hormones. When a woman is going through pre menopause, it is important to assess her liver health, as it directly affects the regulation of hormones. Additionally, the liver has a direct connection to insulin and is crucial for insulin regulation, which can lead to a variety of diseases and disorders if it is not healthy. We love talking about the liver, because if the liver helps regulate hormones, then all of a sudden, if your hormones become balanced, you become balanced. So taking a supplement like Liver Love, which I highly recommend everyone does, I take it on a daily basis because it has methylated B Nine in it.. It's going to help improve your life. Use code nurse dosa for 15% off. There's 120 capsules in it, and you can play around with the dosage if you want. Some people take one a day, some people take two a day. But keep in mind, if you go to two to three pills, it's a heavier detox. If you do four pills a day, you're detoxing and cleaning out that storage unit. So be prepared. It's going to be the best thing for you. Number three fast food leads directly to unhealthy liver. One in four U. S. Adults have a fatty liver, which means one in four US. Adults are eating way too much fast food. Cut back on it and replace that type of fat with healthier fat like avocado. That's a great substitute for your liver. Number four bad liver equals bad estrogen for all the women out there. If you want better hormones, especially better estrogen, take care of your liver. Take some sort of supplement to help support your liver, like knack or maybe even milk thistle. And get off the birth control, please. So to recap, I want you to take away five different tips to support your liver health. Number one your liver makes antioxidants. Find the recipe to make yours. Either get an acetylcystein Ivs or start taking glutathione. Number two the liver helps regulate all your hormones. Keep this in mind the next time you're doing blood work because you want to include liver hormone or liver enzyme panels. Along with your hormone panels, ask your practitioner to order it alongside. That's the reason why all of our vitamins are methylated. Because of people like me. Every single Msw nutrition vitamin has methylated factors in it to help support the mthfr gene because people like me need it in order to function better. And on a side note, we'll get into one episode later, but the mthfr gene and the comt gene are directly connected. So if a person has an issue with both, like we mentioned before, it puts them at higher risk for estrogen and dopamine issues as well as detoxification and hormone regulation. That's my genetics. So I'm at higher risk for things like diabetes because of insulin problems with the liver, right? I'm at higher risk for low testosterone and higher estrogen, which could put me at risk for cancer. And then, because all these issues are also involving neurotransmitter production and the brain, what does that look like for vascular dementia down the road for me and cognitive decline?. Anyone that has an Mthfr issue needs to take methylated vitamins in order to support this gene and its many pathways. Some of the methylated vitamins that you could take are methylated B Nine, five, MTHF. There's also methylcobalamin, which is B twelve, and my personal favorite, P five P vitamin B six. I take these on a daily basis along with something known as trimethylglycine or betaine in order for my methylation cycle to work correctly, because I cannot afford to have any Undermethylated liver.
