Working with partners in government, business, and the community, MAPS Canada is committed to advancing psychedelic medicine by supporting scientific, multidisciplinary research; advocating for drug policy reform; offering public education; and supporting equitable access to legal and regulated psychedelic medicine in Canada. The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) was formed in the US in 1986, in response to the US Drug Enforcement Agency's classification of MDMA as Schedule 1 substance, and has been developing medical, legal, and cultural contexts for people to benefit from the careful uses of psychedelics since then. MAPS Canada was founded as a sister organization to MAPS in 2011, and is a registered Canadian non-profit organization. Based in Vancouver and with hundreds of volunteers from across Canada, MAPS Canada is moving forward to become the leading Canadian source of information, resources and advocacy regarding psychedelic medicine and related clinical research, education, and public policy. Alvin Toffler coined the phrase "electronic cottage" in the 80's. Futurist Frank Ogden carried the concept further. From his high-tech houseboat in Vancouver harbour, he is wired to the world by computer, phone, cable and phone modems, satellite, infra-red transmissions and CD-ROMs. The Financial Post describes Frank as a "20th Century visionary" and calls his ideas "outrageous", an ideal combination of qualities for a life of profitable nonconformity. From Papua New Guinea to the high-tech jungles of silicon, satellites and photons, Frank has a reputation for innovation and originality. In 1979, he began monitoring 200 satellites and 2,000 data banks, to provide a video clipping service for forward thinkers wanting information on new and relevant business developments. Now Ogden circles the globe as consultant to companies and countries, preparing people to trek along the fast track. "A bulldozer of change is charging over the planet," he says. "And if you're not part of the bulldozer, you'll become part of the road." Born in 1920, Ogden was educated in Canada and the United States and served as a flight engineer during World War II. Unflaggingly energetic and curious, he graduated to a dizzying array of jobs flying airplanes and helicopters and selling aircraft (He is currently checked out as Pilot-In-Command in 55 different flying machines), real estate and housewares. During the 1960s, he joined a medical team researching LSD at Hollywood Hospital, and he crossed Canada by helicopter to celebrate the country's centennial. He also helped found Canada's first think-tank, taught at the Ontario College of Art and the New England School of Art in Boston, and managed a Montreal radio station, leading it boldly into progressive rock. He was also a founding member of the World Future Society in Canada. While studying voodoo in Haiti and establishing a think-tank for the Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Ogden recognized the link that exists between primitive thinking and high tech. "Everything in life is information. So-called primitive cultures have known this for thousands of years," he explains. "Voodoo priests get their information through a hierarchy of gods; we get ours through a hierarchy of technology." Such concepts as these have made Frank a celebrity speaker on the conference circuit, where he outlines the electronic and information revolutions of the current and coming decades. Frank suggests a future of teleports, limited labour unions, as more people become self-employed, and body implants to make cyborgs of us all. This episode concludes Season 1 of the MAPS Canada Podcast. What better way to end our first season than with a very special guest, Dr. Erika Dyck. Erika is a Canadian Historian, Professor of History at the University of Saskatchewan, a Canadian Research Chair, and an editor with the Chacruna Institute for Psychedelic Plant Medicines. Erika joins us for an interview with Jaipreet Mattu to discuss her 20 years of research on Canada's past with psychedelic psychiatry, the growing awareness of the role women played in the development of psychedelic therapy, Indigenous use of psychedelic plants and protecting their cultural rights, and lastly, the global future of psychedelic plant medicine. Erika's research focuses mainly on the history of medicine, health and social justice, and of course, the history of psychedelics in psychiatry. She's taught classes on the history of medicine and psychiatry, social justice and gender equality in medicine, and eugenics. She's also written on women's health in other aspects of Canadian health care. More recently, Erika's research focuses on women in the history of psychedelic psychiatry. She highlights the importance of thinking about the intersections of gender in psychedelics and incorporating new voices and discussions about gender considerations in the development of psychedelic therapy. For this bonus interview, we're joined by Canadian lawyer turned historian and journalist, Ross Crockford. Ross was the editor of Monday Magazine, an alternative weekly paper in Victoria, BC and has over two decades of experience researching Canada's past, present, and future with psychedelics. It was during his work as an editor that he discovered the work done by Dr. Abram Hoffer; he actually went on to interview Hoffer himself as well as several of his patients, along with many other early psychedelic pioneers. We'll be back on July 19th, with an episode featuring Canadian Historian, Dr. Erika Dyck. Erika joins us to discuss her research on Canada's history with psychedelics, the history of women and psychedelics, and some of the exciting projects she is collaborating on with individuals from around the world, alongside the Chacruna Institute for Psychedelic Plant Medicines. This episode is the first in our two-part series on Canada's captivating history with psychedelics. Join us as we take a trip down memory lane... Did you know Canada was once the leading country in psychedelic research? Beginning in the late-1940s, Canada's first so-called socialist provincial government in Saskatchewan set out to improve the state of mental health care with research at the Weyburn Mental Hospital. Over the course of the 1950s, groundbreaking research with LSD and mescaline was conducted at Weyburn and LSD made its way to British Columbia which became home to the most prominent mental healthcare facility in the world during the 1960s. In this episode, we deliver a behind-the-scenes look at the introduction of LSD and peyote into Canada and the story behind the fascinating scientists and researchers that pioneered psychedelic research in the realm of psychiatry, while also advocating Indigenous Peoples and their cultural rights to peyote. This episode was produced and edited by Brendon Campbell. It was researched and written by Jaipreet Mattu, Sean Hallam, Rebecca Troock, Sidath Rankaduwa, Monica Lau, Ross Crockford, and Bob Sybydlo. Readings by Sean Hallam, Jaipreet Mattu, and Brendon Campbell. Original music and audio engineering by Andrew Illmann. May 7, 1990 was the day that changed Wendy Davis’ life. A social worker at Hollywood Hospital, she was going about her day when Telstra worker and now convicted killer Bradley Edwards attacked her, grabbing her from behind and dragged her back towards some toilets. But she fought him off, and her evidence helped in the conviction of the Claremont Killer. But Wendy Davis is so much more than just “the Hollywood Hospital victim”. After her ordeal, she had to go on with her life, so she buried the traumatic events, until 2016 when detectives called to tell her, the man who attacked her in 1990, they think is the Claremont Serial Killer. In this episode, Wendy bravely tells her story, in her own words. The trauma she experienced, the grief for Sarah, Jane and Ciara’s families, and the anger at Telstra and Edwards is so raw, so emotional, as she tells Natalie Bonjolo and Tim Clarke her experience and why she wants an apology from Telstra, and why she thinks Edwards should have been charged with more than common assault. Wendy left the job she loved after the attack, the trauma was too much. But Edwards got to keep his job. In telling her story, Wendy said she feels like it’s been therapeutic. She said she even started jotting down her thoughts into a book, which she admitted may, or may not ever see the light of day, but detail her experiences with the attack, and the resurgence of trauma. Join Natalie Bonjolo, Tim Clarke as they speak to Wendy Davis about the attack which eventually linked Edwards’ name to the crimes at Huntingdale, and the DNA found from the Karrakatta rape victim and Ciara Glennon’s murder. One of the Claremont Killer's assault victims has broken her silence. Wendy Davis was employed at Hollywood Hospital in 1990 - when she was hit from behind and was dragged towards a toilet by Bradley Robert Edwards. She managed to escape and Edwards was charged with common assault at the time. Last week the 51-year-old was found guilty of killing Jane Rimmer and Ciara Glennon after abducting them from the Claremont area in the mid 90s. Wendy Davis spoke to Gary Adshead. The Best of The 'X' Zone Radio/TV Show with Rob McConnell

A disturbing and graphic picture of Jane Rimmer and Ciara Glennon’s final hours was painted to the court on the second full day of the prosecution’s closing statements. Prosecutor Carmel Barbagallo told the court it was likely Ciara Glennon was overpowered by her attacker and forced into the foothold of the car. That’s how those fibres got into her hair. For the first time, it was also revealed that RH17 - the pristine hair sample was found already cut at Ciara Glennon’s crime scene - another disturbing revelation, that the hair had been cut during the attack on Ciara which killed her. The prosecutor also rebuffed the fibre contamination theories, calling them ‘preposterous’, almost adding humour into the scenarios which would have had to have played out for one of the defence’s contamination theories to hold up. One of her theories she says holds up, is Mr Edwards’ previous, admitted crimes, or the propensity evidence of attacking lone women - the Huntingdale, Hollywood Hospital and Karrakatta attacks. She even went as far as saying while Mr Edwards didn’t kill the Karrakatta rape victim, he intended to, but was somehow disturbed, left the scene and came back to kill his victim who he thought was unconscious. The prosecution will finish up their mammoth 88-day case tomorrow as their closings are expected end, leaving the defence to start their closing statements. Join Natalie Bonjolo, Tim Clarke and Alison Fan as they take you through the details of Australia’s longest running and most expensive murder investigation, and the new revelations that have come out, even during closings.
