2020 has turned our lives upside down. We're ordinary Americans trying to find a third way out of the toxic dualism taking over our country. There's gotta be a third way out. Let's unite again and become a molten salad ("melting pot" + "salad bowl").
We're excited to have Katie Sir on our podcast. Hailing from the cold north of Minnesota, she is part of a new generation of dating coaches and matchmakers. As a next-gen expert she has insight on how to succeed in dating in 2022. Who is the best fit for you for a long-term relationship? Should we reach for the stars, or do attraction "leagues" still exist? How do we overcome the traumas that hinder us from dating? How do we navigate today's politically divided society? How do we avoid being too picky? And once we're on a date, how do we create that much-needed "chemistry"? Plus Iris and James discuss approach anxiety versus anxiety about being approached. Our thoughts on confidence, repeated rejection, ghosting, and trust-building are also covered. Recorded February 15, 2022. Katie's IG: katie_sir Katie's website: https://katiesir.square.site/
Today we have physicist, mathematician, and geopolitics enthusiast Mandeep on our show. Mandeep is connected to Ukraine by marriage and shares his deep geopolitical wisdom on the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. What do Putin and Ukraine want? What do they fear? Is NATO really the aggressor, as Putin insists? Why is the Russian invasion stalling, and what miscalculations did Putin make before invading? Furthermore, the USA has shown remarkable restraint under Joe Biden. But will it lead to a future in which America questions--and abandons--its alliances with Europe? Recorded March 10, 2022.
Why would a culturally conservative man like James invite dominatrix Vicious to the show? This is the first of our lifestyle series, in which we interview people with lifestyles very different from ours. Because we cannot stay in our comfort zones, our echo chambers forever. If we want peace to prevail, we need to connect with those who are very different, and understand: What are their wants and needs? What led them to live the way they live? And by doing so with Vicious, I found out that like all people of good will, she strives to operate a secure and reputable business. But more importantly, I found that she plays a valuable role in addressing a need that all humans have: the desire to safely explore intimacy. She tells us why people would be drawn to her services, and the role she plays in helping clients safely explore sexuality, reach new levels of intimacy, and heal stagnant relationship patterns. We even get a tour of her dungeon. Recorded March 2, 2022. For more info find Vicious on IG: dommevicious
Today James relives one of the biggest regrets of his life: the failure to make the high school tennis team. Yes it's a First World problem, but the impact and trauma have been real and far-reaching. The road to recover his identity and self-esteem has been long. What was missing in James' quest to become an athlete at the high school level? What can be done to improve youth coaching, empower child learners, and improve accessibility of sport to children? Stick to the end as James also shares his secrets to conquering performance pressure and fear--something he finally started grasping in his 40s. And at the very end, he finds peace. This episode is very raw and open, but if it helps just one child, one learner, one coach, or the sports industry in general, then it was worth it. Recorded February 7, 2022. PS: The sports psych book I mention is Hockey Tough by Saul Miller. Available on Amazon.
California's population fell by 260,000 from July 2020 to July 2021. For the first time, the Golden State is shrinking. It's clear many are moving out. But is it worth it? Do movers really find the greener pastures they seek? Or do they encounter another set of problems? Did the pandemic really change moving trends? And if other states are so great, why haven't Iris and I moved yet? We bring back real estate agent Jonathan and explore together. Recorded January 27, 2022.
Hello and we sincerely thank you, our listeners, for continuing to support our podcast. 2022 not only marks a new year, but a new season-and a new name. For season 3 we are now Lawyer And A Dropout, or LAD.
Life got busy since the summer but we dusted off our mics and we're back! How was our summer and fall? How are Honduran tamales different from Mexican tamales? What have we learned from becoming homeowners? Do we have any resolutions for the new year? What challenges are there to building friendships again in our 30s and 40s? And what bold predictions do we have for the future of war, politics, and the pandemic? PS: We have committed to Season Three and we plan on creating more frequent, diverse, and exciting content for you in 2022. Recorded December 23, 2021.
The United States has lost the war in Afghanistan. We discuss the aftermath of the American withdrawal. But will this be the beginning of more withdrawals? More and more politicians from the left and right are calling for the USA to withdraw its troops around the world. They say that by doing so, it will free up money for America to solve social justice problems at home. Today, in our appeals court format, John argues how withdrawing militarily from across the world, and focusing with the near abroad in North and South America, will provide dividends for the USA in the long run. Recorded September 9, 2021.
Twenty years have passed since the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Join Iris and me as we reflect on the shock of that day, and how it marked the end of a freewheeling era and the beginning of a vulnerable, defensive era. We discuss the new normal of increased security post-9/11, and how the attacks have shaped our young adult lives. Recorded September 16, 2021.
On September 14, 2021, California voters will determine whether Gavin Newsom is recalled from his position as governor of California. Should they vote yes or no? What's wrong with the Golden State, and what bothers Californians? Is it worth it, and is it even democratic? Join us as we debut our new Judge Judy trial format, and put the California recall itself on trial! Recorded August 26, 2021.
Iris and I salute the athletes of the Tokyo Olympics which were finally held after a year delay. We remember the inspirational, the sacrifices, the forgettable, and the funny. From superpowers like Team USA to smaller nations like Fiji, we got it covered. We recognize the many achievements of female athletes--including those that put the USA on top of the medal chart. And yes, what good is an Olympic episode without discussing Simone Biles, fashion, and gender? We cover that too. Recorded August 10, 2021.
Why would four Californians choose to play a sport that's originally meant for frozen lakes? Isn't it dangerous? James and three of his hockey buddies talk about why they love ice hockey and what it has meant to them during the pandemic. We also discuss what this fast, dynamic sport does to make itself uniquely welcoming to all ages and backgrounds. Never played an organized team sport before? Does the smooth, cool ice intrigue you? It's not too late! Hockey welcomes adult beginners, and you too can learn from scratch. Recorded June 17, 2021.
On June 15, 2021, Californians celebrated the reduction of the COVID mask mandate, marking the de facto end of the pandemic here (we hope). But we must not forget the valuable lessons the pandemic has taught us. Join Iris and James (Southern California) and Dalila (Northern California) as we reflect on how we coped, and the lessons we learned. We discuss parenting, education, physical and mental health, nature, community, reconciliation, and courage. Recorded June 17, 2021.
We kick off summer 2021 welcoming Iris as a co-host to our show! And with it, a reboot and a new name: Two Lawyers And A Dropout: Banter With A Purpose. We hope you enjoy our new, more conversational (less censored?) style. Iris welcomes our first guest Susan, who shares about the latest grassroots efforts in Asian neighborhoods to combat hate crimes in the community. She's a true warrior whose story humbles and inspires us. Recorded May 27, 2021. We often think of abortion as a women's issue. But Gallup polls show that 41 percent of American women were pro-life in 2020. Why would women choose to oppose abortion? Is it as safe as we would like to believe? Or is it more harmful to women than we thought? More importantly, are there ways to protect the unborn while truly addressing the fears that women face? Today I talk to my lawyer friend Anne, a former pro-life volunteer. She fends off common pro-choice arguments, but also explains why the current debate isn't working, and why we need a new way of thinking when it comes to abortion. Recorded May 24, 2021.
If Catholicism is so great, why did I leave? And why did Tom stay with Eastern Orthodoxy? Continuing my conversation with Tom as we discuss ways the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches can improve their sense of community. Don't miss our lightning round in the end.
When Americans think Christianity, they think of the Catholic and Protestant churches. But there's a third branch of the faith that is home to a quarter billion people. Join Tom as he shares his journey from Protestantism to Eastern Orthodoxy. And I share my journey from Protestant to Catholic. What led us down this road? What did we discover? Is it Biblical? And how is it better? And how has the Eastern Orthodox Church helped Tom cultivate and enhance his faith? Recorded May 17, 2021.
Summer is almost here, and you know what that means—hot women in bikinis! Originally I thought this would be a just-for-fun episode with Iris as she helps me, a red-blooded male, decipher the complex world of women’s fashion. But as she promised, she blew my mind away. She shares her thought process of how she finds clothes that work for her. And through that we explore deeper issues in fashion, such as impractical design, illogical sizing systems, economic greed, environmental pollution, body image, modesty versus exposure, the patriarchy, and yes, issues of rape and harassment. And if you stay tuned to the end, you’ll hear the shocking theme that is behind all of society’s flawed thinking about women’s clothing choices. Thank you Iris, I learned something totally new and valuable today. Recorded May 5, 2021.
I never thought that a vegan meetup a week ago would inspire a meat-eater like me to think much more critically about the COVID vaccine and our world. Join John, Nate, and me as we discuss our thoughts about the vaccine and the George Floyd verdict. We also talk about what conservatives can do in the face of an overwhelming liberal wave. And I reveal to you my secret for winning elections, no matter what you believe politically. Recorded April 30, 2021.
John and I discuss the historical sources of negative Asian stereotypes. We share the anti-Asian ignorance that we faced growing up. And we discuss the need for a new strategy for Asian Americans to flourish in America in 2021 and beyond. What cultural and lifestyle changes do Asian Americans need to make to finally be heard and to integrate better? (Hint: Gotta get out of your comfort zone.) Recorded March 26 and April 6, 2021.
In our most emotional episode yet, we share how the Atlanta mass shooting of March 16, 2021 has affected us personally, as Asian Americans. Our views are not representative of any groups, and you’ll hear us struggle to find the words. But our feelings are raw and real. We invite you to process this tragedy with us. Our hearts go out to the victims. Recorded March 26, 2021.
I revisit Dustin, our very first guest, to discuss whether there are spiritual and moral forces at play in the election of Joe Biden. Is it God's will that America shift leftward? Plus we discuss the dangers of censorship, and why Jesus' teaching about loving your enemies is more relevant than ever. Recorded January 9, 2021.
Hope 2021 is treating you well so far! After taking a break to recharge, John and I are now ready to open Season Two with an episode we recorded on January 6, the day of the Capitol riots. We talk a bit about that, and then talk what permanent changes will come to our lives after COVID. What changes will come to our society, our culture, our daily habits and customs, our economy, industry, education, and more? Hint: Our lives won’t be the same, otherwise what’s the point of this episode. Enjoy.
Our final episode of Season One. 2021 is coming soon, and never have we been more hopeful for a new year. John and I reveal our resolutions and hopes for 2021. We also reflect on our Thanksgiving and Christmas traditions. Our hearts go out to those who cannot celebrate because of work or loneliness, and to those from other countries who wish to celebrate but lack knowledge of Western culture. We share our tips to make the holidays more festive and to ensure those who feel alone are included this holiday season. Recorded December 19, 2020.
We jump right in! Join John, Tom, and me as we discuss the twists and turns of the 2020 USA presidential election from a conservative-leaning perspective. Is something fishy about the vote count? Exactly what would a Joe Biden presidency look like? We share our gravest concerns, but also admit why we can breathe a sigh of relief. And what does the conservative movement need to do to attract more minorities and young people, who face an uncertain economic future? Recorded November 4, 2020.
Continuing my conversation with Iris on liberalism in 2020 and beyond. Recorded October 28, 2020.
Election Day is around the corner! Today our guest is Iris, who has worked in the mortgage industry for over ten years. She shares how she formed her liberal views, and we talk about what liberalism will look like in 2020 and beyond. Should liberals stick to their positions on issues such as abortion, socialism, healthcare, and the Green New Deal? Or is it time to adapt? I learned two new things from this talk. First, on some issues, we are much closer than we originally thought. And second, I realize that liberals feel the same types of biases that conservatives do, just in different ways. If this talk can show how people of different views can have a civil discussion, then it was all worth it. Recorded October 28, 2020.
Continuing our conversation with Mirak. We move forward to the Nagorno-Karabakh War in the 1980s, also known as the Artsakh Liberation War. We learn the history of Artsakh, which has been settled and shaped by Armenians for centuries. We talk about how this majority-Armenian region voted for independence from Azerbaijan, and how Azerbaijan has retaliated with weapons. Which brings us to the current conflict. Why now? As Artsakh fights for survival and independence, is Azerbaijan justified in quelling this region? How does Turkish support for Azerbaijan fit in with Recep Erdogan’s broader agenda? Who else is supporting Azerbaijan’s efforts? And why isn’t the world doing more to provide a diplomatic solution? The answers may shock you. Perhaps our friends are not who they say they are. If this talk raises more awareness about what is going on in the Caucasus, then that’s a good start. Recorded October 20, 2020.
Today we talk to Mirak. Originally from Los Angeles, he is the owner of Skewers, an Armenian food truck in Spokane, WA. Since July 2020 war has broken out between the Armenian region of Artsakh and its neighbor Azerbaijan once again. Have you heard yet? I know COVID and the US election have taken over the news. But please listen to this episode. This war can have major implications for America, Russia, and Iran. How did Armenia and Azerbaijan become such bitter rivals? To help understand this, we explore the history of Armenia, and its contributions to the West. (Hint: It’s much more than the Kardashians.) Then I ask Mirak about the Armenian Genocide, in which over one million Armenians were killed by the Ottoman Empire in World War I. How did this happen? Why doesn’t Turkey still recognize the genocide after all these years? And we talk about what Hitler learned from this genocide, and why it’s so crucial for the world to recognize it today. Recorded October 20, 2020.
Continuing my conversation with Tom about Christian dating. In part 2 we give you our number one brainstorming exercise to help you find more matches. We discuss online dating, what it means to be yourself, the challenges of interracial dating, where to take a first date, ghosting, and more. Recorded October 17, 2020.
Today’s guest is Tom, a mechanical engineer from Chicago. We talk about the challenges we faced in becoming more socially savvy as young adults, and the challenges we face now in dating and meeting our spouses as American Christians. As Christians we say we want a spouse who loves Jesus, but let’s face it, we also want romantic and sexual tension as well. How do we reconcile these two desires? Exactly how important should physical looks and sexual attraction be? And why is it so hard to meet your spouse in church? Have churches erred in their guidance with dating? Has our community gotten stuck with incorrect patterns of thinking? How do we get out? And what does it mean to surrender dating to God? We also talk about the basics—how to build confidence, how to build a better profile, how to get more matches, do nice guys finish last, and more. If nothing else, we hope to show that men are capable of being fully open, and it’s totally okay. I hope you enjoy this one. Recorded October 17, 2020.
I spend Episode Lucky Thirteen reflecting on the last ten years as I move into a new decade and turn forty. What have I accomplished? Much! But oh man, I have a ton of regrets. What do I regret, and what do I hope to fix? If just one person learns from my mistakes and lives better, then my openness was all worth it. Recorded October 15-18, 2020.
Continuing our conservation with Nate about conservatism in 2020 and beyond. We also discuss Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s legacy, and the impact Amy Coney Barrett will have on the Supreme Court. Recorded September 30, 2020.
(The first 1:41 of this talk is NSFW so discretion is advised.) I talk to Nate about conservatism and the direction it will take in 2020 and beyond. Should conservatives stick to their positions on issues such as abortion, healthcare, and the border? Or is it time for conservatives to change? And is it good for the church if Christians vote for Donald Trump? What more should the GOP do to gain more support among women and minorities? Join us for a discussion about the tough questions facing conservatism in 2020 and beyond. Recorded September 16, 2020.
The COVID crisis has exposed a huge question in religion today. As churches in California continue to be restricted from meeting indoors, it has caused believers to ask, exactly why do churches meet inside in buildings on Sundays? Do buildings still have a point? Or is it time for a new era, in which we find new paradigms to minister and make a difference in this world? Today I talk to Brian, who has volunteered as a catechism instructor and music director for the Catholic Church in Vacaville, CA. We discuss how God is physically present in the Catholic sacraments, and why it’s so important to be physically present in return. Brian also shares his insight into the Catholic Church in Japan and how it endured a period of persecution and no priests but still survived. Recorded July 29, 2020.
Today I talk to Kevin. For 14 years Kevin has been a sound engineer for various churches. He brings his insight into what it takes to create more effective religious community. Recorded September 2, 2020.
Today we introduce our friend Nate Oleson, a probate litigation attorney in Bakersfield, CA. Nate and his wife are survivors of the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting which killed 61 people. It is now three years since that shooting. Nate shares his story of survival, sacrifice, and physical and mental healing. He also discusses gun policy at the end. Would you ever put your life on the line to save another? Join us for our most compelling episode yet. Recorded September 30, 2020.
This time John interviews me. I introduce to you my religious background, and we talk about why the Christian church has been a follower and not a leader in the year 2020, in the midst of the George Floyd crisis. Why has the church been relatively silent? Has the church lost its way? Should it still even be involved anymore in social and political issues? What can the church do to be more vibrant and effective again in American society? I’ll give you my opinion on what the church has been missing. Recorded July 31, 2020.
We spend 10 minutes each on three topics—defunding police, raising minimum wage, and abortion control. Do these improve the lives of blacks and other minorities? My goal is that no matter what you believe politically, you’ll find good stuff that you like on this episode. Recorded August 3, 2020.
John and I talk about and critique several different proposed solutions to combat racism in America. Do they work? Will they really make a difference? Or are we playing victim too much? From reform of welfare, rehab of drug users, race preferences, to reparations, we got it covered. Recorded July 15, 2020.
Today John and I try to come up with an Asian-American perspective on the George Floyd killing. Do black Americans have a unique struggle that is greater than those of other minorities and immigrants? (Hint: yes they do.) We discuss the historical origins of their unique struggle, and why the struggle is still great today. We also discuss the statue-toppling trend, and critique the failure of the CHAZ zone in Seattle. Our views are not representative, but we hope this is a good starting point of discussion. Recorded July 15, 2020.
We continue our conversation with John Lee. We discuss how the COVID crisis could lead to permanent fixtures in our society. Will the mask be a permanent fixture? But that’s not all. Is it time for universal, single-payer healthcare to be a permanent fixture in America in response to COVID? This is a challenging talk, and I hope you enjoy it.
In this episode I speak to my friend John Lee. John is a California-licensed lawyer like me. But unlike me, he’s an entrepreneur who has found success in the mortgage and healthcare industries. He speaks about the multifaceted nature of the George Floyd protests, which have gone far beyond Mr. Floyd himself. He also speaks about how the US government's response to the pandemic has been logically inconsistent. Have we witnessed the limits of individual rights in America? We chat about ways the government can be much more effective while lessening the impact on people’s rights.
In this first episode I speak to my friend Dustin, an engineer who has lived in China for ten years. He speaks about the necessity to have common values if we want any hope of uniting in the midst of the pandemic. He also includes some bold steps churches can take to be better equipped in times of crisis. It’s a brief chat. Enjoy.
