What happens after the beginning? After spending sometime inside our special series, We Didn't Plan for This, this conversation felt like a return to the roots of what How Yoga Changed My Life has always been about — how practice evolves alongside real life.Three years after his first appearance on How Yoga Changed My Life, Chris Kennedy returns with a completely different perspective on practice, teaching, creativity, and life.In Chris' first interview, the core theme was really about beginning before you feel “ready.” His story centered around discipline, transformation, and consistency. Along the way, he discovered parts of himself through Yoga that extended far beyond the mat.Chris has intentionally taken classes from more than 100 different Yoga teachers to study not just what teachers teach, but how they teach. What creates connection? What makes a class memorable? What actually makes people feel something?Chris shares how he lost his father a year ago, and how that loss shifted his relationship with time, work, and joy. This conversation is thoughtful, reflective, and full of reminders that Yoga is often less about perfection — and more about paying attention.Click here for Actually, Yoga on SubstackClick here to listen to 3 Pics with Chris & Clint on AppleClick here to listen to 3 Pics on SpotifySend us Fan MailFor those who have reached out asking how to support Adrienne and her family during this time, click here to donate. His Boss Told Him He'd Never Rise Above Engineer Level. Three Years Later, That Boss Reported to Him. Samuel Santos on Getting Noticed at Work Early in his career, his manager told him the company had a prototype for success: blonde hair, green eyes. Samuel Moody Santos was mixed race, Black, an immigrant who had started his working life as a waste picker. His manager told him he would never advance past engineer level. Three years later, Samuel was a manager and that man reported to him. He went on to retire as Senior Vice President at Johnson & Johnson, one of the top 40 Fortune 500 companies in the world. He speaks five languages. He holds an engineering degree and an MBA. And he wrote the book on how he did it: "In Spite of the Headwinds." In this episode, Samuel shares the specific mindset shifts, communication strategies, and career moves that took him from invisible to indispensable, as a minority, an immigrant, and someone who was actively told he didn't belong. You'll learn: Why "success depends on who you know" is the wrong mental model, and the one-sentence reframe Samuel used to challenge a corporate trainer in a room of 40 people that changed how he thought about visibility for the rest of his career. Why doing excellent work and staying quiet about it is the same as doing nothing, and how he marketed his ideas without ever bragging about himself. How he turned a direct manager who tried to limit his career into a stepping stone by building relationships with leaders two and three levels above that manager. The "poor photograph" framework: why being visible without being skilled fails, and why being skilled without being visible fails just as badly. Why he treats every "no" the same way: either he didn't explain the idea well enough, or he needs a different audience. The Starbucks founder knocked on 242 doors. Samuel applied that same logic to ideas inside a corporation. How he disagrees with superiors without triggering defensiveness: "I never disagree with any person. I disagree with ideas." The specific language he used to pose challenges as questions so people moved toward his position instead of defending against it. The performance review confrontation where someone tried to penalize a team member for a mistake from two years prior, and how Samuel addressed the entire room to win that argument on the spot. Why he focused ruthlessly on the one skill he could take above average (presenting technical ideas to non-technical executives), and chose not to develop things that wouldn't move the needle, including declining to learn Mandarin during a two-year assignment in Shanghai. About Samuel Moody Santos: Retired Senior Vice President at Johnson & Johnson, Samuel is an engineer, MBA, minister, polyglot (five languages), honorary consul, former university professor, public speaker, and author of "In Spite of the Headwinds: My Journey from Waste Picker to Vice President at a Top-Forty Fortune 500 Company." On this week's edition of the Talking Michigan Transportation podcast, an update from Ryan McMahon of Cambridge Mobile Telematics, a Massachusetts firm that tracks data from drivers(participating voluntarily with their insurance carriers) to analyze statistics and driver behavior. McMahon spoke on the podcast previously, including a few months after Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the lawin 2023 making it illegal to use a hand-held electronic device while driving.Following a report in April from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) showing crash numbers declining to pre-pandemic levels, McMahon talks about how that correlates to distracted driving related to the use of electronic devices. He said the significant drop in 2023 has been sustained but further progress has plateaued through 2025.“Looking at this year through April 30, I see a slight trend upward,” McMahon said.A recent State Farm survey found that distracted driving is the top roadway safety concern among U.S. licensed drivers ages 18 to 75. The survey also found that roughly 70 percent of drivers agree that hands-free laws would help reduce driver distraction. McMahon also talks about his firm's findings about what areas of Michigan have the highest use of electronic devices while driving and a specific place that has the least.
Today I am reminded of the days I told my daddy, "daddy stop disturbing me, I need my space ". I miss my daddy throwing tantrums about the littlest of things. As long as it is his ADA, My daddy no send you o, he come for you with his full force. Today makes it exactly three years since his demise and I still apply the lessons and teachings. He was persistent with his teachings on integrity. In his words, "A poor man's capital is integrity". I miss my daddy and he remains my one of my greatest teachers, a man that held me and showed me the right path to take, he gave me a great platform to build from and I am eternally grateful. This bonus content is a reading from Platypus, the CASTAC Blog. The full post by Melissa Villa Nicholas can be read at https://blog.castac.org/2026/04/data-borders-three-years-later/. About the post: People often ask me these questions when I present my research on my book, Data Borders: How Silicon Valley is Building an Industry Around Immigrants (2023 UC Press), which examines the growing industry of data collection for the surveillance and control of immigrants in the United States. These questions arise in undergraduate and graduate classrooms, at academic conferences, and among public workers in the United States. I respond by advocating for policy protections for immigrant information rights, providing examples of data rights activism, and demonstrating how we are applying techno-imagined futures within my Southern California community to advocate for humane shifts in technological design and data collection.

It's been three years since a Norfolk Southern “bomb train” carrying toxic chemicals derailed in the small town of East Palestine, Ohio, on the night of Feb. 3, 2023. Three days later, Norfolk Southern pressured local authorities to make the disastrous and completely unnecessary decision to vent five giant carloads of vinyl chloride into a ditch and set the contents on fire, releasing a massive chemical plume into the air, exposing residents in East Palestine and the surrounding areas to deadly toxins in one of the worst industrial disasters in US history. Three years later, residents are still getting sick, many have been financially ruined, they have been abandoned by their government and Norfolk Southern, and forgotten by the public. And, as Katya Schwenk details in a blockbuster new report for The Lever, residents are still waiting for the restitution they were promised from the $600 million settlement that Norfolk Southern agreed to pay to resolve residents' class-action lawsuit over the derailment.Guest:Katya Schwenk is a journalist based in Phoenix, AZ, and a reporter for The Lever. Episode 113 examines the challenges presented by the Islamic State Khorasan (ISK) in Afghanistan within the context of the three-year anniversary of U.S. withdrawal from the region. Our guests share their extensive backgrounds, research, and practical experience related to the emergence of ISK in Afghanistan and Pakistan. They define the current operational environment that exists in the region with a particular focus on the power vacuum created by U.S. withdrawal in August of 2021. They then delve into how ISK adopted a two-pronged strategy of forging key alliances and rivalries to exploit tensions and build a diverse talent pipeline for their organization. Our guests also offer insight into the challenges of defining and addressing the ISK threat by evaluating the feasibility and limitations of “over-the-horizon” counterterrorism capabilities. Finally, they provide policy and strategy considerations for the future of counterterrorism operations. Andrew Mines is a senior program specialist in the Asia Center at the United States Institute of Peace. He is the co-author of the book, The Islamic State in Afghanistan and Pakistan: Strategic Alliances and Rivalries, which is the foundation for today's conversation. This week on the 'OPE: One Year Later' series, we are continuing our extended conversation on the collapse of Afghanistan and where we go from here. I'm reaching out to you and connecting with the prominent voices involved in the long war in Afghanistan as well as its future. Afghan voices, in many cases, have been muzzled and their voices are not heard. Our focus is to give them a platform to speak truth to power so that you can hear the stories not told and how it affects not only you and your family but the world for the future. In this episode, Lieutenant General Haibatullah Alizai, the former Commander of all Afghan Special Operations Forces and leader of the Afghan military in its final days gives a riveting description of what led to the collapse, what we can learn from it, and what we must do for the future in order to protect ourselves at home. CONTEXT ON THIS SERIESIn August of 2021, the United States Government officially withdrew from Afghanistan leaving hundreds of thousands of at-risk Afghans vulnerable to Taliban brutality. Immediately, the impact of this moral injury was apparent on out Afghan allies and veteran populations with many of them left behind to deal with the aftermath that no one was coming. Scott and a team of combat veterans began to leverage their network of relationships to provide safe passage and ultimately relocation of hundreds of at-risk Afghans. Scott now has the opportunity to share the story of those Afghan Allies who made it out and of those who are still fighting their way to safety today, alongside many of the extraordinary men and women who made this possible. In this podcast series, Scott sits down with some of the members of Pineapple Express to share their stories and reflect on where we are one year later after the collapse of Afghanistan. This week on the 'OPE: Three Years Later' series, Scott had the opportunity to sit down with another incredible and experienced individual, Lieutenant General Sami Sadat. Over the last year, many of our veterans and citizens have asked "what was the point?" in reference to Afghanistan. It has been very hard to process the loss and impact under the shadow of the withdrawal and abandonment. But as a former member of the Afghan National Army, Sami points out - the end is not written. The men and women of Afghanistan who grew up under relative freedom and other opportunities may just take back their country and carve out their future - with or without us. The future of Afghanistan and the U.S are inextricably linked. Join Scott and Sami to learn why.
