Under bullshit pretenses, thug Putin has invaded the democratic, free, sovereign, absolute right-to-exist Ukraine. This is just as much about China, as it is about Russia. This is just as much about Taiwan, as it is about Ukraine. Russia and China are evil. They seek to destroy the international rules based order. Enough is enough. Free and democratic nations everywhere must ally to face head on the existential threat match made in hell that is Russia and China. The free and just world is with you Ukraine, keep fighting. Riff on Morgan Housel's excellent piece on how the US economy has developed post WWII. Shifting from a tide that raised all boats to one that increasingly raising only some. Also add analysis from The Economist showing social mobility in America is declining. Be careful of charlatans offering quick fixes. In an economic, business, and geopolitical landscape that looks like nothing we've ever dealt with- it's with a sober mind we must approach these discussions. Let's riff. Would love to hear from you. For the first time in thirty-three years, one of eleven surviving copies of the Official Edition from the Constitutional Convention will be publicly auctioned by Sotheby's. It is the only copy that is still owned by private collectors. The proceeds from the auction will be given to a charity that has been established by the current owner. Google has entered the ring alongside Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle to bid for Department of Defense's Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability contract. You may remember back in 2018 when Google employees protested Project Maven, a Google DoD AI project that among other things sought to increase the accuracy of drone strikes. Google did not renew that contract but now they are back in earnest. Good. Facebook announced they are renaming their company to "Meta" as they shift their focus to the metaverse (think VR). This is a seismic bet Zuckerberg is making. End to end encrypted messaging app Signal reveals Santa Clara County and California District Court subpoenaed them for user data. Once again they show that the only data they have on their users is their phone number, when they created their account, and when they last connected to Signal's servers. The House late Friday night passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act also known simply as the "Infrastructure Bill." This is the largest investment in America's infrastructure in over a decade and comes at a crucial time for democrats where Biden's popularity has been dropping and elections in Virginia and New Jersey have democrats shaken. Former president Trump launched a new "Non-Cancellable" social network called Truth Social. However the ToS stipulates if you talk bad about Truth Social, you will be cancelled. Riff on the deplatforming of Trump and how this shows a well functioning free system. The first amendment protects us from the government, it doesn't stipulate private businesses must give a megaphone to our elected officials. On the news of the Hertz and Tesla partnership, Tesla passes $1 trillion in market cap. Making it more valuable than every other car company combined. To the haters of Elon Musk, I'm talking to you. You can come at my man for his tweets about taking the company private, or the Solar City deal, his missing of targets, the progress of autopilot- valid criticisms for sure. But zoom out. He's created the first successful car company in several decades. He's kicked the world's car companies in the ass- they had no interest in going electric before Tesla. His vehicles are literally the safest on the road. Tesla has open sourced their patents. Listen to any of the Tesla shareholder meetings, their north star is moving humanity to sustainable energy as quickly as possible. More than any other company on the planet, Tesla is moving the needle against climate change. Not just with vehicles, but with solar and grid scale battery storage. You going vegan and turning your lights off doesn't do shit. And the reason you think it does is because BP, an oil and gas company, ran a campaign several years back convincing us all tackling climate change was a matter of personal responsibility. The problem is far too big. The world shut down in 2020 due to Covid, and collective emissions dropped only 5%. That's nothing. Technology is the only answer. And this is what it looks like. Facebook launched Novi, a crypto payments app with a limited release in the US and Guatemala. Built on the Ethereum blockchain, it allows for zero fee cross border payments. These two countries were chose because 14% of Guatemala's GDP comes from remittances (non commercial transfers from abroad) and 90% of them come from the US alone. The current banking system requires high fees- taking money out of the pockets of those trying to send money back home to their families. Novi tackles that problem head on. Google today released their new flagship phones, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Five years ago when Rick Osterloh joined Google as head of hardware, the second day on the job he sat down with Google's CEO Sundar Pichai and said we need to build our own SoC. The Pixel 6 is that plan brought to life. Google has called this their first flagship device and the first time they really think they can compete with Apple and Samsung for market share. As an Android neck beard for over a decade, and a Pixel hardo for half that, I'm skeptical that this device will be a huge breakout success. But five years from now it could be a real contender. Hardware takes time. But the fruits for Google are now just coming home to port (that's three sayings in one). Would love to hear from you. Coinbase, leading cryptocurrency exchange, announced their Digital Asset Policy Proposal. History has been made. The SEC has approved a Bitcoin ETF. Standard retail brokerage accounts in the foremost capital market in the world can now gain exposure to Bitcoin. It will be available as early as next week. You may ask yourself why a Bitcoin ETF matters if you can just buy Bitcoin on an exchange like Coinbase. Two reasons. First, many retail investors don't have crypto exchange accounts. This will give those with your standard brokerages like Charles Schwab and Etrade a way to trade Bitcoin. Secondly, this is nod by the SEC, that a Bitcoin ETF is safe for investors. This is a huge step in the maturing of Bitcoin and the cryptocurrency market in general. Bitcoin just keeps becoming more and more relevant. Step by step. Thank you Matt Levine for your excellent rundown. Axie Infinity is more than a game, it's an economy, it's a governance system- something only possible when building on the blockchain. a16z recently announced their investment in Axie Infinity, and any time they do I always look into the project. Will a game that rewards player for playing, gives them true ownership of in game items, and gives them a vote in how it develops be enough? Do enough people actually care about these pillars, or do they just want a fun game. Maybe, maybe not. But one thing is damn certain, only in the cryptocurrency world can these questions even be explored. Watch on YouTube, follow on Twitter & Instagram.
