I was recently reading the May/June 2024 issue of “The Science Teacher” a publication of the National Science Teaching Association. In this issue, I read the “Right to the Source” section written by Danna Bell. This section included an article entitled, “See America and Its National Parks.” Today over 300 million people annually visit the 429 individual designated properties that are managed by the National Park Service, covering 85 million acres in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the territories.
Episode 3561: The Globalists Want To See America Go Broke; Driving The Right Side Of History

In this episode, we switch gears and talk about eclipse poster art! Commissioned by the national parks service to create "See America" posters and promote the dark skies of our national parks, we have the eclipse event poster art master, Tyler Nordgren. He is a former astronomy professor, dark sky ambassador, and artist that gave up his teaching career for art! Hope you enjoy or chat with Tyler. America's entered a time where the "nones" -- those without solid religious footholds -- and the secularists and the atheists have taken over much of the politics and culture, and drummed into the minds of emerging leaders of the nation that faith has no business in government. But such separation of church and state as an example of what founders wanted is a figment of the far left's imaginations. Faith and religion must be alive and active in America else America falls to communism. Christy Stutzman speaks on the very critical need for Christians to get more involved in government and culture.

TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the weeks of October 16 and October 23, 2023. SOUNDS and VOICES – ~8 sec - people visiting Dismal Falls in Giles County, Va., August 20, 2011. That's the sound of people enjoying a scenic and splashy site in southwestern Virginia, where the main attraction is a type of water feature renowned for fascinating formations and dramatic drops. Have a listen for about 35 seconds to some music and mystery sounds, and see if you know this type of water feature. And here's a hint: the alternative name for autumn is what the water does. MUSIC and SOUNDS - ~33 sec If you guessed a waterfall, you're right! You heard three Virginia waterfalls: the Cascades in Giles County; a waterfall in Mill Creek Nature Park, also in Giles County; and Falls Ridge Falls in Montgomery County. The accompanying music, by Williamsburg, Va., musician Timothy Seaman, was “Crabtree Falls,” named for a Nelson County waterfall whose 1200-foot total vertical drop is the highest of any waterfall east of the Mississippi. And the episode's opening sounds were from Dismal Falls, once again in Giles County. These five are among 61 scenic and publicly accessible waterfalls in the Commonwealth listed in the “Great Virginia Waterfall Trail,” compiled by the Let's See America Web site. Meanwhile, the World Waterfall Database has 186 entries for Virginia, including smaller waterfalls, some located on private properties, and some now inundated by reservoirs. Encyclopedia Britannica defines a waterfall as “an area where flowing river water drops abruptly and nearly vertically,” and notes that the terms cataract, cascades, and rapids can also be applied to water coursing over an elevation change, depending on the height and the sharpness of water's drop. Most of Virginia's waterfalls occur along the Blue Ridge or farther west in the Valley and Ridge province; additionally, significant drops of the Potomac, Rappahannock, and James Rivers occur along the Fall Line between the central Piedmont and eastern Coastal Plain. These are places where some key waterfall-formation factors occur: changes in the elevation of the landscape, rock layers with different levels of resistance to erosion, and plenty of flowing water. Virginia's waterfall champ Crabtree Falls doesn't rival the world's tallest, such as Tugela Falls in South Africa, with a total drop of over 3000 feet. Nevertheless, the Commonwealth's many and varied, large and small waterfalls are popular, scenic, and invaluable water treasures. Thanks to Blacksburg neighbors for recording the Dismal Falls sounds. Thanks also to Timothy Seaman for permission to use part of “Crabtree Falls.” We close with another waterfall-related musical selection. Here's about 40 seconds of the traditional tune “Over the Waterfall,” in a version by Virginia Tech geography instructor Stewart Scales. MUSIC - ~38 sec – instrumental. SHIP'S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and Environment. For more Virginia water sounds, music, or information, visit us online at virginiawaterradio.org, or call the Water Center at (540) 231-5624. Thanks to Stewart Scales for his banjo version of “Cripple Creek” to open and close this episode. In Blacksburg, I'm Alan Raflo, thanking you for listening, and wishing you health, wisdom, and good water. The Eurasia Group Foundation (EGF) came out in June with their annual survey of international perceptions of American democracy. As the Biden administration works to restore the credibility of the United States on the world stage, we found favorable views of both the United States and American democracy are at a four-year high. The report also found favorable views of President Biden's foreign policy decisions, including Ukraine and Afghanistan. At the same time, views of American democracy from respondents in China are at a four-year low. The report is based on nearly 5,000 survey takers in nine politically and geographically diverse countries. Respondents were asked detailed questions about the United States, its democracy, and its global influence. EGF shared its most notable findings with JQAS and discussed possible implications for US foreign policy going forward. EGF researchers Zuri Linetsky, Caroline Gray, and Lucas Robinson spoke with us. You can find the full poll here. https://egfound.org/2022/06/modeling-democracy-democracys-promise/ You can find more information about our Marcellus Policy Fellowship, mentioned at the end as a great way to develop your foreign policy writing skills, here. Important Events March 9, 1874 Today is the birthday of the revered German plant breeder, writer, and garden designer Karl Foerster. Now Karl was born into an intellectual and accomplished family. His father was an astronomer, and his mother was a famous painter. Many gardeners are surprised to learn that Karl began gardening at the tender age of seven after obtaining an apprenticeship. A year later, Karl entered a professional gardening program and studied there for 11 years. When Karl turned 18, he took over his family’s Berlin nursery, which was a bit of a mess. But Karl had a knack for running a nursery. He streamlined the business by simplifying his plant inventory. Although Karl loved all plants, he was especially drawn to tough, low-maintenance, hardy perennials. Karl used three factors to determine whether a plant would be sold in his nursery: beauty, resilience, and endurance. And Karl's high standards ended up bringing great success to his nursery. When he turned 24, Karl moved his nursery to Potsdam. There, Karl married a singer and pianist named Eva, and together they had one daughter. Knowing Karl’s high standards of plants, imagine how exacting Karl was as a plant breeder. Yet, Karl never pollinated flowers by hand. He wanted nature to reign supreme. Today, Karl Foerster grass is a recognized staple in many gardens and landscapes. The story goes that Karl was on a train when he spied the grass along the tracks. To seize the chance to collect the specimen, Karl pulled the emergency brake, stopped the train, and then quickly collected the specimen that now bears his name. While gardeners have heard of Karl Foerster Grass or Feather Reed Grass (Calamagrostis), many fail to realize the grass was successful because it first met Karl’s high standards for perennials. Karl Foerster grass was the Perennial Plant of the Year in 2001. And, Overdam is a variegated version of Karl Foerster grass. Karl’s plant performance expectations and his appreciation for low maintenance spaces with year-long seasonal interest helped shape the New German Garden Style of garden design. A Karl Foerster garden had some signature plants: grasses, delphinium, and phlox. Naturally, all of these plants were favorites in Karl’s breeding work. Karl once wrote, “A garden without phlox is not only a sheer mistake but a sin against summer." And he also wrote, “Grasses are the hair of mother earth.” Karl lived to the ripe old age of 96. And looking back, it's staggering to think that Karl spent nearly nine decades gardening, and it was Karl Foerster who said, “In my next life, I’d like to be a gardener once again. The job was too big for just one lifetime.” March 9, 1892 Today is the birthday of the English author and garden designer, Vita Sackville West. In 1930, Sissinghurst Castle - at least what was left of it - was bought by Vita and her husband - the diplomat, and journalist, Harold Nicolson. Together, they restored the house and created the famous garden, which was given to the National Trust in 1967. After seeing Sissinghurst for the very first time, Vita recalled, “I fell in love; love at first sight. I saw what might be made of it.” Vita explored the depths of her own creativity as she shaped the gardens at Sissinghurst. When she came up with the idea for a Sunset Garden, she wrote, “I used to call it the Sunset Garden in my own mind before I even planted it up.” Vita’s Sunset Garden included flowers with warm citrus colors, like the yellows, oranges, and reds of Dahlia's Salvias Canas and tulips. Vita also created a white Garden – one of the most difficult Gardens to design, maintain and pull off. White gardens are challenging, and you may be thinking, well, why is that? Well, here's the main reason: because, after flowering, many white blooms don’t age well; they turn brown or yellow as they wither and die on the plant. But I have to say that 10 years ago, I did help a friend install a white garden. And when it was in bloom, it really was spectacular. By the time World War happened, Vita and Harold had been working on Sissinghurst for nearly a decade. But there came a point when they were both convinced that a German invasion of Britain was becoming more likely. Never one to run from a challenge. Vita decided to plant 11,000 daffodils on the property. She was essentially leaving her legacy and a message of defiance to the enemy. Vita’s personal life was as varied and fascinating it's the plants in her garden. She had relationships with both men and women, and she loved the people in her life intensely. Once, in a letter to Harold, Vita wrote, “You are my eternal spring.” On December 29, 1946, Harold wrote, "Trying to convince [Vita] that planning is an element in gardening… She wishes just to jab in things that she has leftover. The tragedy of the romantic temperament is that it dislikes form so much that it ignores the effect of masses.” In 1955, Vita was honored with the Veitch Memorial Medal, which is awarded to those who have helped advance and improve the science and practice of horticulture - and Vita definitely achieved that. I thought I'd close out this mini-biography of Vita with her own words. Here's something that Vieta wrote about spring: She walks in the loveliness she made, Between the apple-blossom and the water-- She walks among the patterned pied brocade, Each flower her son, and every tree her daughter. And We owned a garden on a hill, We planted rose and daffodil, Flowers that English poets sing, And hoped for glory in the Spring. Unearthed Words Plants can be said to have a personality, a certain air about them, and this is often reflected in their names. The term vulgari often refers to what was considered the most common plant in the genus at the time of the naming. Thus the Primrose was named Primula vulgaris. Many species names. Describe the beauty of a plant. The specific name Bellis means beautiful... And it's fairly easy to identify Elegantissima presents no surprises as it means very elegant… While dius shows even greater beauty since it describes a plant belonging to the gods. — Richard Bird, garden writer, A Gardner's Latin, General Personality. Grow That Garden Library Flower Confidential by Amy Stewart This book came out in 2008, and the subtitle is The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful. It's hard to believe that this book has already been out for over 13 years. This was Amy's third book, and it's one of my favorites. And I remember thinking when this book debuted, just how sensational the stories in this book were - and also I was amazed by the amount of work it took Amy to write this book and to help us understand just what the flower industry is all about. Now the publisher describes Amy's book this way: “Amy Stewart travels the globe to take us inside this dazzling world. She tracks down scientists intent on developing the first genetically modified blue rose; an eccentric horticultural legend who created the world's most popular lily (the 'Star Gazer'); and an Ecuadorean farmer growing exquisite, high-end organic roses that are the floral equivalent of a Tiffany diamond. She sees firsthand how flowers are grown and harvested on farms in Latin America, California, and Holland. (It isn't always pretty). You'll never look at a cut flower the same again.” This book is 320 pages of the secret story of flowers in the marketplace - highlighting the intersection of flowers, technology, marketing, and money. You can get a copy of Flower Confidential by Amy Stewart and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $2 Today’s Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart There should be no monotony In studying your botany; It helps to train And spur the brain-- Unless you haven't gotany. We recap the first large indoor gathering in the U.S. since the beginning of the COVID-19 shutdown. President Trump’s rally was already steep in controversy from when they chose the initial date and location to when they changed the date but not the location and prepared for a massive crowd; 19,000+ yet the crowd was much smaller than originally anticipated. Plus, “The Room Where it Happened” by former National Security Advisor, John Bolton, has hit bookstore shelves everywhere and the President is not happy. We take a look at why. Crystal talks with resident political nerd, Rudy Garcia, on how the 2020 campaign is going—rather how it has slowed to a crawl—amid the current COVID-19 crisis. The Senate is still having hearings and the House has still been passing important bills so it seems that politics have been trudging on subtly in the background. So are you still curious about how to see America but maybe a bit worried about jumping into an RV? All month long we have been discussing the RV lifestyle. In the first episode of the series (263) we discussed how to diagnose the virus. The next covered how to afford it, and on this episode, we discuss the alternatives to RV’s that are out there. If you have the RV virus you might be overly focused on the romanticized dream of owning an RV and you may not have considered any alternatives. We’ll also chat with Fritz who comes with experience in RV ownership and he shares his expertise with the RV lifestyle. Listen to this episode to discover if there may be an antidote to the RV virus lurking inside of you. Do you have tunnel vision? Once we get this RV virus it can be hard to think of much else. It starts with an innocent RV show. It’s just a fun weekend activity, you think. But that innocent day out plants a bug inside of you. You start getting the magazines, reading the blogs, watching the YouTube videos and pretty soon you are eating and drinking RV’s. When you have this kind of tunnel vision it can be hard to picture a future that doesn’t involve an RV. But before you jump in with both feet (and all your money!) consider some alternatives. How to see America without an RV You may think that there is no cure other than getting an RV but that’s not the case. There are other alternatives that you need to consider before going all in. I offer you these 4 antidotes to see if they can cure the RV virus: Rent an RV for a month. There are plenty of RV rental sites that you can check out so that you can rent the dream RV that you have romanticized. This way you can really see if the romanticized version you have in your head matches the actual experience. Rent or borrow a friend’s RV. We all know people that have RV’s sitting in storage that they never use. Do both of you a favor and borrow theirs. This is a great way to test the waters. Start small. Try buying a used smaller RV, maybe even a pop-up to see if the lifestyle really suits your vision. This way if it doesn’t work out you won’t be out an arm and a leg. Frequently you can sell these for what you paid for them. Rent a home instead. Sometimes it’s not really the RV virus you have, but maybe it’s just an itch to travel more. Think about how to see America without an RV. Try renting a home somewhere you have been wanting to visit for a month. With VRBO and AirBnB finding a vacation rental has never been easier. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t get an RV, but that it’s important to make the right decision. It’s ok to go all in but be intentional about your choices. You need to be honest with yourself about the cost of ownership and the way you will use the RV. Why did Fritz choose a 5th wheel? Fritz and his wife have had a love of camping since childhood. They also enjoyed camping with their daughter and have enjoyed backpacking, car camping, and they had a small trailer for years. The decision to buy a 5th wheel was not one they took lightly. They visited RV shows for years to really understand the features of all the different types of RV’s that are out there. They ultimately chose a 5th wheel based on comfort and the realities of having an engine in your house. Fritz also knew that he wanted to have a truck in retirement, so a 5th wheel was the obvious choice for them. What are their RV plans? Fritz has been retired 8 months now. They took some short trips over the past summer and really got comfortable in their 5th wheel. This summer they are taking a Great American Road Trip with their 4 dogs. They are planning to head from Georgia up to Seattle and back. They are in the planning stages right now securing campsites and mapping out how to see America. They understand the logistics of this epic journey and are planning to take it nice and slow traveling no more than 300 miles a day. Listen to Fritz discuss the excitement of how they are creating their plans on this episode of Retirement Answer Man. Joseph and his wife made a list of 25 cities they wanted to live in. Shortly after, she died in a plane crash. Joseph kept that list in his pocket. 40 years, 40 apartments, 28 foreign cities, and 12 US cities later, their list is finally complete. The DevOps kids have decided to come up with a new term “observability.” We get to the bottom of the WTF barrel on what that is - it sounds like a good word-project. Also, there’s a spate of kubernetes news, as always, and some interesting acquisitions. Plus, a micro-iOS 11 review. Meta, follow-up, etc. Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/sdt) - like anyone who starts these things, I have no idea WTF it is, if it’s a good idea, or if I should be ashamed. Need some product/market fit. Check out the Software Defined Talk Members Only White-Paper Exiguous podcast over there. Join us all in the SDT Slack (http://www.softwaredefinedtalk.com/slack). Is “observability” just “instrumentation”? Write-up (https://medium.com/@copyconstruct/monitoring-and-observability-8417d1952e1c) from Cindy Sridharan. This guy (https://medium.com/@steve.mushero/observability-vs-monitoring-is-it-about-active-vs-passive-or-dev-vs-ops-14b24ddf182f): “Thinking directionally, Monitoring is the passive collection of Metrics, logs, etc. about a system, while Observability is the active dissemination of information from the system. Looking at it another way, from the external ‘supervisor’ perspective, I monitor you, but you make yourself Observable.” So, yes: if developers actually make their code monitorable and manageable…easy street! It’s a good detailing of that important part of DevOps. Cloud Native Java (http://amzn.to/2jPJHcv) has a good example with the default “observability” attributes for apps, and then an overview of Zipkin tracing. Weekly k8s News Heptio gets funding (https://www.geekwire.com/2017/heptio-raises-25m-series-b-funding-round-kubernetes-takes-world/), now “has raised $33.5 million in funding to date.” I think we’ll cover this press release in a WP episode. Also, something called “StackPointCloud” now with the Istio (https://thenewstack.io/stackpointcloud-drops-istio-service-mesh-integration/). Mesosphere adding K8s support (https://techcrunch.com/2017/09/06/mesosphere-says-its-not-bowing-to-kubernetes/) - “Guagenti also noted that he believes that Mesosphere is currently a leader in the container space, both in terms of the number of containers its users run in production and in terms of revenue (though the company sadly didn’t share any numbers).” "I think it’s fair to call Kubernetes the de facto standard for how enterprises will do container orchestration,” Derrick Harris (http://news.architecht.io/issues/with-oracle-on-board-kubernetes-has-to-be-the-de-facto-standard-for-container-orchestration-73880). Kubernetes usage is running in some form at 54%, and Cloud Foundry usage is at 50%” This update from the Cloud Foundry Foundation (https://www.cloudfoundry.org/update-containers-2017-research-shows/) is a little more, er, “responsible” in pointing out flaws. Instead it just says there’s lots of growth and tire-kicking: 2016/2017 y/y shows those evaluating containers went up from 31% to 42%, while “using” ticked up a tad from 22% to 25%, n=540. It allows users to connect repositories, build images from source, then deploy them to that Kubernetes cluster. You can also set up automated pipelines to push images from one cluster to another, promote software from test/dev to prod, quickly roll back and do all this in the context of one or more Kubernetes clusters… The Kubernetes service is offered as a hosted service or in an on-prem version. An audio reading describing a harrowing SUPERNATURAL encounter, that turned out to be one of the most profound I've ever experienced; opening my eyes to how dangerous the illegal alien dilemma is for Americans today. America is in deep water, but what if God has a plan on how he can reverse the CURSE of WALL-LESS-NESS, while somehow keeping migrant families from being irreversibly destroyed? It is all in the Churches power, if we would only respond to this dilemma as if it were our own homes getting invaded- because OUR HOME LAND IS, absolutely OCCUPIED by those who do not belong here! While few understand the gravity of our sovereign nation under foreign occupation (by those not committed to the rule of law that governs us) our borders remain wide open as the SPIRIT OF ANARCHY and TAKE OVER broods over the USA. See America's Home Invasion @ newinepouring.com for the article, as well.

Okay, so... we figured last Wednesday worked out so well, we would do it again. Now that we are a partner at http://the405radio.com/ we can do that! Edward Snowden; was he a concerned Patriot who got fed up with the government trampling the constitutional rights of citizens? Or was he a traitor who will be solely responsible for trillions of terror attacks in America? We also discussed the FBI's utilization of drones within the United States and the lack of any agency policy regarding such use. Also, the NSA (stands for "Not a Secret Agency" or "Nothing to See America"). The General answers questions, just not the one that is asked. Welcome to the Sack Heads Radio Show! Live from studio 1 (unless you're listening to the podcast, then it was recorded live, but not actually live...you get it). Each week we rip into politics, news and current events. Has the government gone too far? Are your rights being attacked? Out of control world leaders? We got it covered. With a sharp tongue and occasional potty humor, we strive to keep the facts straight, and pick up where Main Stream Media ignores or hides. This isn't your parent's conservative talk show; this is the Sack Heads Radio. ?Conservative Kick Ass?

This episode tackles the question, "Is trucking really an adventure?" As you'll hear, that largely depends on the person behind the wheel. Since I get out of the truck and go exploring about as often as a TV evangelist refuses money, I figured I'd get avid trucker/explorer, Kevin McKague, a.k.a @KevinofMI, to explain how he manages to see more than just asphalt when he's out on the road. And in a rare treat, you get to hear his voice instead of mine. He mentions AllTrails.com as an excellent source of information. He cites some trails he frequents, including the Western Maryland Rail Trail. And he talks about places he's visited, including links to Modern Woodmen Park, a minor league ball park in Iowa, and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania. Kevin is @KevinofMI on Twitter, and you can see his photos on Flickr, or on Instagram. Not long after he wrote this blog post, he also started a blog of his own, which is called Kevin's Untitled Travel Blog. We've got a whopper of a feedback section today. I get a few comments from the regulars and I answer some questions Kristine asked over on the interview I did on JobShadow.com. We discuss many concerns women have about getting into the trucking industry, including loading and unloading issues, how women drivers are treated, and whether she should find a team driver to make more money.
