Text us your thoughts about this episode or ideas for future episodes! In this episode, I'm joined by ultrarunning filmmaker Dylan Harris for a special conversation.Dylan is the director of an upcoming film called "The Chase", which tells the story of the epic six-way battle for victory at the 2024 Cocodona 250, featuring Jeff Browning, Harry Subertas, Michael Versteeg, Joe McConaughy, Arlen Glick, and Michael McKnight. We've had almost all of these guys on the pod before — some of my favorite characters in the sport — and it was incredible to see how this film captured the unique blend of their personalities and racing styles at a premier multi-day event like Cocodona. In this conversation, Dylan and I start and finish by discussing the potential for more content like this in the ultrarunning space, which was awesome. But even more so, we spend the bulk of our time diving deep into each of the featured athletes, adding another compelling layer of insight to the film's storytelling.Timestamps:(2:05) - Unbreakable inspirations, making more films with good storytelling prioritized(19:26) - Arlen Glick, Michael Versteeg, Joe McConaughy, Michael McKnight, Jeff Browning reflections(85:17) - final thoughtsPartners:Norda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever made (https://nordarun.com/)Gorewear - use code SINGLETRACK30 at checkout on their website (https://www.gorewear.com) to get 30% off your purchase.Naak - use code SINGLETRACK20 at checkout on their website (https://www.naak.com/) to get 20% off your purchase.Raide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains (https://raideresearch.com/)Additional Links:"The Chase" Film TourDylan HarrisInaugural Year, The Long Way HomeFollow Finn on Instagram, Strava, Youtube, and PatreonSupport the show

In the 99th episode of Run with Fitpage, we had a world record holder, Karl Meltzer, a.k.a., "Speedgoat Karl". Karl currently holds the record for most 100-mile trail race wins on earth: 38. Vikas and Karl discuss transitioning from marathon or half marathon distances to the longer ones, the ultramarathons. Karl is an ultrarunner and ultrarunning coach based in Sandy, Utah. Meltzer has won more 100-mile ultramarathons than any other ultramarathoner and has held speed records at major U.S. trails, including the Appalachian Trail and the Pony Express Trail. Meltzer's trail runs have been featured in news outlets from Ultrarunning.com to NBC Sports. Meltzer has been a professional ultramarathoner since 1999, and a coach since 2007. While many ultramarathoners tend to be vegetarian, vegan, and anti-alcohol or caffeine, Meltzer has been seen with bacon, Red Bull, and microbrews. On September 18, 2016, Meltzer set an Appalachian Trail record by completing the 2,190 miles over 14 states in 45 days 22 hours, and 38 minutes. This achievement was featured in a 2017 documentary movie "Made To Be Broken". Meltzer's record was eclipsed in September 2017 by Joe McConaughy in a self-supported run. The current A.T. fastest known time was by Belgian runner Karel Sabbe, who completed the trail in 41 days, 7 hours, and 39 minutes on August 29, 2018. Meltzer is the current Race Director for the Speedgoat 50K at Snowbird Ski Resort. To train with Karl, visit www.karlmeltzer.com.Vikas hosts this weekly podcast and enjoys nerding over-exercise physiology, nutrition, and endurance sport in general. He aims to get people to get out and 'move'. When he is not working, he is found running, almost always. He can be found on nearly all social media channels but Instagram is preferred:)Reach out to Vikas:Instagram: @vikas_singhhLinkedIn: Vikas SinghTwitter: @vikashsingh1010

This year's Cocodona 250 was absolutely epic. With a stacked field of some of the best runners in the nation, there was no doubt it was going to be an incredible display of endurance over the course of 250 miles. And today's guest is the guy who came out on top to win the race in less than 60 hours! Today, we're chatting with Joe McConaughy, best known as “The Stringbean” in the ultrarunning community. Joe is not only an accomplished ultrarunner, but also an accomplished thru-hiker/fastpacker who has amassed FKTs on the Arizona Trail, Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Coast Trail and more. On top of an amazing ultrarunning career, Joe also runs his own coaching business to help other aspiring runners to accomplish their biggest goals. In this episode, Joe discusses his entire journey through Cocodona 250, the strategies he used to help him get through the low points in the race, and how he capitalized on his lead in the race to secure the sub-60 hour effort. 2,650 miles. On foot. Two thousand, six hundred, and fifty miles! In 53 days... 53 DAYS! For those who are a little slow with their math that's roughly 50 miles a day. That's what Joe Mcconaughy did when he set the Fastest Known Time hiking/running/surviving the Pacific Crest Trail down the West Coast from Canada to Mexico. Since then he has shattered records on the Appalachian Trail, Wicklow Round, Long Trail, and Arizona Trail. We talked all about how he got into ultramarathoning in the first place, what it takes to complete a 50+ day journey, and how he prepares for life on the trail. Highly recommend checking out some of the documentaries from his past trips on YouTube. They are INSANE. It was also impressive to hear how Joe has created different sources of income from his athleticism. He is a sponsored Columbia athlete, has started guiding adventure trips all over the country, and now coaches other ultramarathoners and runners. Joe McConaughy and Coree Woltering independently decided to try for an FKT on the Arizona Trail. Our Social Media Coordinator Allison Mercer heard about this, contacted them, with the result being Joe and Coree decided to start at the same place at the same time ... and see who makes it from the Mexican border to Utah first! "I think we'll have different FKT strategies ... I'm not sure how much he is going to divulge, and not sure how much I'll divulge ..." Coree was Nominated for the Fastest Known Time Of the Year last year for his Ice Age Trail FKT, and Joe was #2 FKTOY for his Long Trail FKT, so both have endurance cred. And both are fast - Coree has a 2:26 Marathon under his belt, and Joe has done a 50 miler in 5:22. "I've always started slow and built up ... and will do that this time especially ... " NOTE: Very unfortunately, Coree experienced technical difficulties for both our two recording attempts and so was unable to be on this podcast. NOTE #2: Even more unfortunately, Coree later became injured, and on 3/15 decided not to attempt the AZT at this time. JOE Update: "I'm still on! The snow is a bit concerning, but I feel good that the majority of it will melt off, assuming no more snow. I'm also guiding with Andrew Skurka Adventures after, so it is either 3/23 or bust!"

A resident of Boston, MA, Joe McConaughy set the Supported FKT for the 2,655 mile Pacific Crest Trail in 2014, and on the 26-peak Wicklow Round in Ireland last May. He is best known however, for his amazing Self-Supported FKT on the iconic, 2,189 mile Appalachian Trail, which not only bettered the Self-Supported record by 8 ½ DAYS, but also the overall Supported record of Karl Meltzer by 10 hours, and won him the Male FKT of the Year Award for 2017. "Not having a support crew really does take it down a notch from what you’re able to provide … you spend two hours in town, and leave carrying 25 pounds of food and supplies on your back.” Listen to Joe very thoughtfully weigh the pro’s and con’s of Supported vs Self-Supported: "I love going Self-Supported. At the same time, it’s incredibly hard to be self-supported for a long trail like that. It’s forced isolation from other people." "Stringbean" has a new website: http://thestringbean.co

Earlier this month, Joe McConaughy stepped off the trail in Maine after demolishing the Fastest Known Time (FKT) for the 2,200-ish mile Appalachian Trail. He averaged about 50 miles a day and completed the journey in an unsupported fashion. So really, how much actual running did he do?
