There are ten different words, or phrases used to represent hell, and each has their separate meaning and place. Sheol, Hades, and the Pit all represent the place where people exist currently. Gehenna, the Lake of Fire, and outer darkness represent the future hell where people will go after the Great White Throne Judgment Day. Satan and most likely his demons with him are cast into the lake of fire as it says in Revelation. The words Abyss, Abyssos, Bottomless Pit, and Tartarus each represent where demons are currently assigned, each area perhaps having certain fallen angels and demons. In this sermon, Pastor Chris Romig emphasizes the reality of the unseen spiritual realm and the active spiritual warfare Christians face, drawing from Revelation chapter 9. He warns that Satan seeks to undermine believers, especially during seasons of prayer and fasting, referencing Paul's teaching in Ephesians 6 that our true struggle is against spiritual forces of evil. Chris interprets the symbolic imagery of the fifth trumpet judgment, where Satan is given the key to the bottomless pit, releasing demons described as monstrous locusts. He explains that these are fallen angels, some of whom are imprisoned until the final judgment, and references both Old and New Testament passages to underscore that demons are real and active despite modern skepticism. While the unleashed demons bring terrible torment to those who reject God, Chris reminds the faithful that God remains sovereign, setting firm limits and protecting those marked as His own. He addresses the unsettling reality of God's judgment by underscoring the seriousness of sin and God's patient desire for everyone to come to repentance, as highlighted in 2 Peter 3:9. Ultimately, Chris calls his listeners to recognize the true consequences of rejecting God's grace, to repent, and to find hope in the promise, that despite the world's evil, God's triumph and love will prevail.

Understanding this also highlights the importance of living as true believers in Christ and doing everything we can to share the gospel with others. We have a promised hope and destination to live for, knowing we will be rewarded as we stay faithful today. On today's episode, I talk to musician Tim Midyett. Originally from Havre, Montana, Tim started the band Ein Heit in 1985 with his friends, and two years later, they changed their name to Silkworm. In the 20 years the band was together, they released over two dozen albums, EPs and singles on a variety of labels including C/Z, Matador and Touch and Go. In 2005, Silkworm stopped performing after their drummer Michael Dahlquist was killed in a car accident. Tim and Silkworm's guitarist Andy Cohen would go on to form Bottomless Pit, who released four albums and EPs on the wonderful record label Comedy Minus One, and most recently, Tim has been writing and performing with his latest group Mint Mile!  (FYI this was taped back in late December; I meant to put it out earlier and then the city caught on fire for a couple weeks - anyway, I only note this because we're a lil' flippant about the current political atmosphere in a way that I don't think we'd be if this was taped today!) In the late 1830s, the owner of Mammoth Cave hoped to attract more tourists to the area. One of the key figures in making that happen was a slave named Stephen Bishop. Stephen became one of the most popular guides in the caves history, as well as a brave and savvy explorer, responsible for the expansion of the cave system with his discovery of several 'new' areas like the Bottomless Pit and Ruins of Karnak.It was stipulated in his owners will that Stephen was to be emancipated seven years after the owners death, and he was finally free in 1856, but unfortunately his story does not have a happy ending.There is so much more to be said about the role of slaves related to the early exploration and management of Mammoth Cave than what's covered in this episode.
