Decentralization has sparked more conversation and opinions than we can track. As people become more aware of the cracks in the current financial system, solutions to the ways through and over those existing barriers become more appealing. Richard Craib is the founder of the crowdsourced quant hedge fund, Numerai, which is using sophisticated machine learning to create models that essentially predict how the stock market moves. During this conversation with Tom, Richard is sharing how crypto is breaking the barriers of the old financial system that was meant to protect people, while effectively keeping everyone out. This is another resource that can be really useful in seeing the bitcoin revolution, blockchain and cryptocurrency in another light, especially through the lens of finance. Prediction markets were one of the first use cases of smart contracts, yet their popularity only recently spiked, following Polymarket's social media spread. However, while prediction markets are generally zero-sum games, the rise of AI models trained on large datasets led to AI-powered prediction feeds and hedge funds. Crypto offers a unique array of use cases as it allows data scientists to not only share their data sets and models with complete privacy, but also access decentralised computing and model training. While Predictoor employs Ocean's data infrastructure to run AI-powered prediction bots on lower timeframes, Numerai developed its own AI hedge fund for stocks, that recently also expanded to crypto.Topics covered in this episode:Predictoor & Numerai overviewPrediction marketsPrediction feedsPrediction markets in TradFi and other use casesImplementation of Ocean's tech in PredictoorPredictions vs. FuturesMarket participantsNumerai hedge fundNumerai's trust assumptionsThe role of AIThe evolution of AI and how it might solve market inefficienciesNumerai crypto and how it differs from PredictoorPredictoor x Numerai collaborationsThe future of prediction marketsEpisode links:Trent McConaghy on TwitterRichard Craib on TwitterPredictoor on TwitterNumerai on TwitterOcean Protocol on TwitterOasis Protocol on TwitterSponsors:Gnosis: Gnosis builds decentralized infrastructure for the Ethereum ecosystem, since 2015. Christiansen and Nick Chater Buy here: https://tinyurl.com/35bvs8be Stephen Wolfram starts by discussing the second law of thermodynamics - the idea that entropy, or disorder, tends to increase over time. He talks about how this law seems intuitively true, but has been difficult to prove. Wolfram outlines his decades-long quest to fully understand the second law, including failed early attempts to simulate particles mixing as a 12-year-old. He explains how irreversibility arises from the computational irreducibility of underlying physical processes coupled with our limited ability as observers to do the computations needed to "decrypt" the microscopic details. The conversation then shifts to discussing language and how concepts allow us to communicate shared ideas between minds positioned in different parts of "rule space." Wolfram talks about the successes and limitations of using large language models to generate Wolfram Language code from natural language prompts. He sees it as a useful tool for getting started programming, but one still needs human refinement. The final part of the conversation focuses on AI safety and governance. Wolfram notes uncontrolled actuation is where things can go wrong with AI systems. He discusses whether AI agents could have intrinsic experiences and goals, how we might build trust networks between AIs, and that managing a system of many AIs may be easier than a single AI. Wolfram emphasizes the need for more philosophical depth in thinking about AI aims, and draws connections between potential solutions and his work on computational irreducibility and physics. Please check out Numerai - our sponsor @ http://numer.ai/mlst Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mlst Discord: https://discord.gg/ESrGqhf5CB Professor Jürgen Schmidhuber, the father of artificial intelligence, joins us today. Schmidhuber discussed the history of machine learning, the current state of AI, and his career researching recursive self-improvement, artificial general intelligence and its risks. Schmidhuber pointed out the importance of studying the history of machine learning to properly assign credit for key breakthroughs. He discussed some of the earliest machine learning algorithms. He also highlighted the foundational work of Leibniz, who discovered the chain rule that enables training of deep neural networks, and the ancient Antikythera mechanism, the first known gear-based computer. Schmidhuber discussed limits to recursive self-improvement and artificial general intelligence, including physical constraints like the speed of light and what can be computed. He noted we have no evidence the human brain can do more than traditional computing. Schmidhuber sees humankind as a potential stepping stone to more advanced, spacefaring machine life which may have little interest in humanity. However, he believes commercial incentives point AGI development towards being beneficial and that open-source innovation can help to achieve "AI for all" symbolised by his company's motto "AI∀". Schmidhuber discussed approaches he believes will lead to more general AI, including meta-learning, reinforcement learning, building predictive world models, and curiosity-driven learning. His "fast weight programming" approach from the 1990s involved one network altering another network's connections. This was actually the first Transformer variant, now called an unnormalised linear Transformer. He also described the first GANs in 1990, to implement artificial curiosity. Schmidhuber reflected on his career researching AI. He said his fondest memories were gaining insights that seemed to solve longstanding problems, though new challenges always arose: "then for a brief moment it looks like the greatest thing since sliced bread and and then you get excited ... but then suddenly you realize, oh, it's still not finished. Something important is missing.” Since 1985 he has worked on systems that can recursively improve themselves, constrained only by the limits of physics and computability. He believes continual progress, shaped by both competition and collaboration, will lead to increasingly advanced AI. On AI Risk: Schmidhuber: "To me it's indeed weird. Now there are all these letters coming out warning of the dangers of AI. And I think some of the guys who are writing these letters, they are just seeking attention because they know that AI dystopia are attracting more attention than documentaries about the benefits of AI in healthcare." Schmidhuber believes we should be more concerned with existing threats like nuclear weapons than speculative risks from advanced AI. He said: "As far as I can judge, all of this cannot be stopped but it can be channeled in a very natural way that is good for humankind...there is a tremendous bias towards good AI, meaning AI that is good for humans...I am much more worried about 60 year old technology that can wipe out civilization within two hours, without any AI.” [this is truncated, read show notes] YT: https://youtu.be/q27XMPm5wg8 Show notes: https://docs.google.com/document/d/13-vIetOvhceZq5XZnELRbaazpQbxLbf5Yi7M25CixEE/edit?usp=sharing Note: Interview was recorded 15th June 2023. https://twitter.com/SchmidhuberAI Panel: Dr. Tim Scarfe @ecsquendor / Dr. Keith Duggar @DoctorDuggar Pod version: TBA TOC: [00:00:00] Intro / Numerai [00:00:51] Show Kick Off [00:02:24] Credit Assignment in ML [00:12:51] XRisk [00:20:45] First Transformer variant of 1991 [00:47:20] Which Current Approaches are Good [00:52:42] Autonomy / Curiosity [00:58:42] GANs of 1990 [01:11:29] OpenAI, Moats, Legislation

This show is sponsored by Numerai, please visit them here with our sponsor link (we would really appreciate it) http://numer.ai/mlst Prof. Karl Friston recently proposed a vision of artificial intelligence that goes beyond machines and algorithms, and embraces humans and nature as part of a cyber-physical ecosystem of intelligence. This vision is based on the principle of active inference, which states that intelligent systems can learn from their observations and act on their environment to reduce uncertainty and achieve their goals. This leads to a formal account of collective intelligence that rests on shared narratives and goals. To realize this vision, Friston suggests developing a shared hyper-spatial modelling language and transaction protocol, as well as novel methods for measuring and optimizing collective intelligence. This could harness the power of artificial intelligence for the common good, without compromising human dignity or autonomy. It also challenges us to rethink our relationship with technology, nature, and each other, and invites us to join a global community of sense-makers who are curious about the world and eager to improve it. Richard Craib is on the podcast this week to discuss how he and his company are building the last hedge fund—Numerai. Richard has found that virtually all hedge funds today are continuously duplicating research and strategies. This lack of originality leads to less than stellar performance, and makes it difficult for new funds with original ideas to emerge. Numerai is built to solve this problem, as it's the first hedge fund to source original stock market signals, built from any data set from anyone in the world with zero barriers.    Richard Craib is the Founder and CEO of Numerai, based in San Francisco. Craib graduated Cornell University with a BA in Mathematics in 2012 with a focus in abstract algebra. He has also taken classes at UC Berkeley, Stanford and the University of Cape Town. Before starting Numerai, Craib was a quant at an asset management firm with $15 billion in assets under management in Cape Town, South Africa, where he built a global equity long-only fund powered by machine learning.   Check out the full show notes at https://getleverage.com/podcast/88

Richard, the founder of Numerai, joins me for a great podcast to discuss how they are building a blockchain based hedge fund using crowdsourced predictions. Numerai, founded in Dec. 2015, is building a blockchain based hedge fund that utilizes artificial intelligence and crowdsourced stock market predictions. The platform relies on a monthly machine learning and data science “tournament” where users, primarily data scientists, can submit trading algorithms about the stock market. Numerai then employs artificial intelligence algorithms to analyze the predictions, and the best are included in Numerai’s “meta-model” which combines all the underlying inputs on which it will trade the stock market. Originally published April 3, 2017A hedge fund is a collection of investors that make bets on the future. The “hedge” refers to the fact that the investors often try to diversify their strategies so that the direction of their bets are less correlated, and they can be successful in a variety of future scenarios. Engineering-focused hedge funds have used what might be called “machine learning” for a long time to predict what will happen in the future.Numerai is a hedge fund that crowdsources its investment strategies by allowing anyone to train models against Numerai's data. A model that succeeds in a simulated environment will be adopted by Numerai and used within its real money portfolio. The engineers who create the models are rewarded in proportion to how well the models perform.Xander Dunn is a software engineer at Numerai and in this episode he explains what a hedge fund is, why the traditional strategies are not optimal, and how Numerai creates the right incentive structure to crowdsource market intelligence. This interview was fun and thought provoking–Numerai is one of those companies that makes me very excited about the future.

Numerai, the "hardest data science tournament on the planet". It's a hedge fund with its own distributed research platform designed specifically for AIs. It's the first of its kind and takes a radically different approach to making market predictions. It's completely crowd-sourced and data scientists around the world compete to create the best predictions and get paid with cryptocurrencies. Users are completely blind to the data and Numerai is blind to the code, and the predictive models users generate. The result is a hedge fund which is market neutral, currency neutral, and geography neutral. It makes all decisions solely on the data.Richard Craib, Founder of Numerai, was first on the show 3 years ago when the project's token, Numeraire, was just launched. While many companies like to use buzzwords like crypto, blockchain, AI and encryption, Numerai actually combines all these technologies in a novel way. Founder Richard Craib discusses how his hedge fund started off crowdsourcing good financial models from data scientists to optimize its trading strategies in global equities. He then explains how it airdropped a token, the Numeraire, to those data scientists, giving them the option to stake some Numeraire for models they were especially confident in, and how staked models have higher returns. He also describes Numerai's new Erasure protocol, which helps build a marketplace for predictions for sellers who could profit more from selling their predictions than trading on them, and for buyers who can now use the signal of staking to filter between good and bad data. We dive into the protocol's "griefing" process, in which buyers can punish sellers, as well as the thorny issue of whether selling predictions based on proprietary information could constitute insider trading. Plus, we explore whether or not other hedge funds would really want to buy a token created by another hedge fund, and what Numerai's plans are to become more decentralized. Thank you to our sponsor! I intentionally avoid the world of quantitative investing on this podcast. The whole point of this format is to learn about many different fields, and the vast majority of my time is already spent in quant world. Occasionally I’ve broken this rule because of something unique, including this week’s conversation with Richard Craib, the founder and CEO of Numerai. If you listen to the podcast often you’ll have heard me reference Numerai, a hedge fund which blends quant investing, cryptocurrencies, crowdsourcing, and machine learning — talk about a PR company’s dream. One important note: Numerai is both incredibly open and very secretive. You may sense a bit of frustration on my part, but that is only because, as a fellow quant who loves details about data and modeling, we couldn’t go deeper into the details on the record. We discuss how Numerai has created an incentive structure to work with data scientists around the world in an attempt to build better investing models. The idea of having data scientists stake cryptocurrency in support of the quality of their models is fascinating. Like many hedge funds, Numerai doesn’t share its track record, so we don’t know if this works—but I hope you, like me, use this conversation as inspiration for how different technologies can intersect. Crypto Jerônimo's Musings: On Blockchain, Smart Contracts and Cryptocurrencies

This is an episode on the super cool Machine-Learning-powered hedge fund, Numerai. Summary Numerai is a global equity long-short hedge fund, which specializes in relatively long time-range investments, on the scale of 6-9 months. They’re interested in more finely granular moves, that are at the level of individual stocks; they aim to identify anomalously-priced stocks, and thus exploit price discrepancies. One might argue that their essential task is to restore market efficiency. Collaboration in finance is largely uncommon and impractical due to the competitive edge that is characteristic to the kind of predictive modeling that is associated with the area. Numerai addresses this via running rounds of successive Machine Learning competitions for the purpose of crowdsourcing predictions,...

Good morning listeners, Today is a very special episode. I am here live with Jared Broad, the founder of Quantconnect. Jared and his team are building a platform for anyone wanting to build quantitative trading strategies and a marketplace for anyone to license their trading strategies using alpha streams. They have done the hard part by building the infrastructure for quantitative traders and a vibrant community to share and learn from each other. We discuss the Quantconnect platform, his story and experiences, and how Quantconnect got started. Below is an excerpt of our conversation about where engineers find inspiration. “That is the beauty about having a big diverse community. If you understand philosophy and psychology, then you will be using your philosophy and psychology experiences to pull into your trading strategy. Maybe you’re a math grad and you will be using mathematical techniques and thinking about things with hard numbers. Everybody got different inspirations by their experiences. That is kind of the beauty of a community of people is that they all have different experiences and they come together to design it in the Quantconnect ecosystem.” 1:14 – Tell me how it got started. What was your background and what led you to create Quantconnect? 4:38 – Can you tell me more about your experience in Chile? 6:13 – How was the startup culture? 7:20 – What is Quantconnect and how are you guys different from the others like Quantopian and Numerai? 9:07 – Can you tell me more about the LEAN program? 12:40 – Can you tell me more about the alpha streams and are your competitors doing anything similar to that? 15:36 – What are alpha signals and can you give examples and strategies that have generated alpha? 17:26 – How do you benchmark those signals? 18:30 – Where do engineers find inspiration for their strategies? 23:47 – Can you tell me about the Jupyter notebook? 26:20 – Do you personally subscribe to a particular investment philosophy and how would you characterize it? 28:33 – Do you seek any inspiration from others investors? 29:11 – What is your objective with Quantconnect? 30:03 – What are your favorite books? Xander Dunn and Richard Craib discuss Numerai, a new kind of hedge fund built by a network of data scientists. The Numerai platform crowdsources machine learning by releasing encrypted data sets to data scientists, incentivising them to develop machine learning algorithms to analyse the data. Scientists then bid their predictions to the hedge fund by staking funds, and are paid returns in Numeraire, the platform's native cryptocurrency, for correct predictions. By abstracting its financial data to be only machine-readable, Numerai ensures that human biases and overfitting are overcome, and that short-term and long-term returns are equally weighted. With the ultimate goal of “owning all of the money in the world”, the Numerai hedge fund has high hopes for the future. numer.ai twitter.com/xanderai twitter.com/richardcraib itunes.apple.com//podcast/the-eth…id899090462?mt=2

Models that are used on Numerai for algorithmic trading are submitted by users (Data Scientists) on the platform, where they are rewarded “Numeraire” tokens for successful modeling. Numeraire is not a currency in itself; the tokens are used for Data Scientists to essentially “bet” on their own machine learning models and how well they'd actually perform on a live market with real money. This form of “staking” allows the scientist to essentially receive a dividend of sorts for their successful modeling. As the success of Numerai grows, so will the overall proportion of funds being paid off to data scientists. Crowdsourcing is a relatively common term in technical vernacular today. Even if you're not a self-identified "techie", you may very may well have leveraged crowdsourcing in journalism, the sciences, public policy, or elsewhere. One area in which this concept hasn't really taken off  is in finance and hedge funds. In this episode, we speak with Richard Craib, founder of Numerai, about the company's model for pooling data science talent, using "anonymous" models to train financial data, and competing against one another, in which winners are rewarded in bitcoin to exchange through virtual markets. Craib speaks about his overarching vision for the company, and also delves into the past, present, and future of AI applications in finance.

We’ve spent the past couple of weeks of this show talking to leading early-stage investors in financial technologies -- guys like Charles Moldow of Foundation Capital and Caribou Honig of QED Investors. These are the same guys that have invested in some of the biggest names in the financial technology space. Companies like Lending Club, Credit Karma, Motif Investing, OnDeck Capital, Prosper, and Zopa. What makes many of these companies different from their incumbent competitors is that they’re bringing technology solutions to financial problems. That’s not to say incumbent financial institutions don’t use technology -- they certainly do, a whole lot of it. It’s just that this generation of fintech company is exactly that fin - tech -- they’re technology companies at their core and their solutions to financial problems -- whether lending to people without credit history or remitting money more cheaply and quicker across global banking borders -- they’re technological in nature. Some of the most interesting things we’ll see in the future is machine learning applied to the stock market. We know human beings’ biases when it comes to investing and even the world’s best investors fall prey to our own shortcomings, our own humanity. It’s entirely possible machines can do it better. Our next guest, Richard Craib, is working on a machine learning solution to the stock market much in the same way Netflix turned to top external algorithm developers to improve its own recommendation engine -- by offering prizes. Richard’s company, Numerai is an amazingly ambitious undertaking. He’s offering top investing systems developers cash prizes in return for using his firm’s encrypted data set to build alpha-producing strategies. Sitting on top of it all is Numerai with its own big data solution that’s investing its own nostro account, trying to optimize allocating capital between strategies. It’s a black box of black boxes but crowdsourced from some of the world’s smartest data scientists. As I talked with Richard, I kept thinking to myself -- What does this spell for the future of investing? People like Warren Buffett and Peter Lynch -- two of my favorite all-time investors -- seem so, so...antiquated when you start thinking about AI’s potential to participate in investing. Will future episodes on CNBC profile -- not today’s celebrity cowboy stock picker -- but tomorrow’s PhD touting data scientist who builds software for a living? Interesting.
