Panthers Dominant In Game 2 to Tie the Series at One

On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Frank Forte(@FrankJForte) to the show to recap the Panthers' 6-1 victory over the Boston Bruins in game 2. Early signs of this game was very similar to game one as the Bruins were still winning their fair share of battles while forcing Florida to the perimeter. Florida had the territorial advantage and had one more power play than Boston after 20 minutes, where some might have thought, "How are the Panthers gonna get pucks past Swayman?" Well, the Panthers responded in the big way, and the fourth line set the tone on both the first Panthers goals, and the floodgates opened after that. Prior to the first intermission, Paul Maurice went back to his lines from the Tampa series and the Panthers showed a lot of jump. Second consecutive game in this series where the team that won also scored a goal prior to the second intermission: It took the air out of the building in game 1, while the building in Sunrise almost went off when Gustav Forsling gave the Panthers a two-goal lead. Game got out of hand once the Panthers scored less than two minutes into the third. Florida broke their PP drought against the Bruins thanks to Aleksander Barkov, who had four points on the night while his line took over the contest. Florida almost went a whole period without allowing the Bruins to register a shot on net as they forced a multitude of one-and-done's. Panthers set a franchise record in hits with 76 on the night, while also getting under the Bruins skin, resulting in multiple players getting 10-minute misconducts as the game got out of hand. Are the Panthers in the Bruins psyche? We discuss this and more on today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast: Your Team, Every Day.Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

Florida got punched in the mouth and now have a game under their belt. Sam Bennett had a long skate yesterday, Paul Maurice discussed his status for the series, and what the Panthers would need to do if he is once again out of the lineup. Maurice coached teams have never come back from a 2-0 series deficit, so a big test ahead where the Panthers have an opportunity to split before hitting the road again. Should there be a different look on the power play with the Cats not having a single goal in both the regular season and postseason to this point? On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brings in Jackson Holzer(@JacksonH_52) onto the show to break down the Panthers' 5-1 loss against the Boston Bruins. Panthers lack of puck management proved costly as we saw signs of it in the first period with David Pastrnak having multiple opportunities off turnovers. Florida scored the first goal off a turnover and Matthew Tkachuk got a shot off of Hampus Lindholm to take a 1-0 lead. Then the wheels fell off for the Panthers as Boston scored over a minute later. Panthers contained Pasta statistically, but Florida allowed two Boston players in their first postseason to get on the scoreboard. Florida was unable to take the eyes away from Jeremy Swayman on the night, where he was able to stop 38 of 39 on the night. The guys discuss their three stars, when they thought the game was lost, and how even if Sam Bennett doesn't play on Wednesday, on if the Panthers will go back to their forward lines prior to the start of game 5. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) welcomes in David Lasseter(@davidlasseter) to break down Florida's 6-3 loss against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Bolts came out like a team with a purpose as they limited the Panthers to five shots in the first 20 minutes. The Panthers gave up goals in all situations as they allowed two goals on the power play(including a 5-on-3), two at four-on-four, and a short handed goal. It was not the best of games from Sergei Bobrovsky as he gave up multiple goals from distance with no screens in front, and bit hard on Brayden Point's fake before finishing his wraparound. Tampa Bay was able to gain the zone more easily on the afternoon and caught the Panthers multiple times that led to breakaways. Sam Reinhart scored just as the power play ended for Florida to make it 4-2, which was officially goal number 60. Reinhart now has the most goals in a season by a Panther, regular and postseason combined. Oliver Ekman-Larsson got his first postseason goals since he played in the 2020 Edmonton Bubble as a member of the Arizona Coyotes. The Panthers controlled play for the first 15 minutes of the game where the Cats didn't allow the Bolts to easily get through the neutral zone. Game one didn't bring a lot post-whistle, despite both teams combining for almost 100 hits. Panthers played a disciplined game where they only went to the box twice on the night, where Tampa Bay got their when it was too little too late with 9 seconds left in regulation. Cats went into the third period with over 1:30 left on the man advantage, where they converted just under a minute into the frame on a beauty of a backdoor feed from Aleksander Barkov to Carter Verhaeghe to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead at the time. Sergei Bobrovsky was not tested much on the afternoon but saved his best for last, especially with less than 5 minutes left. Panthers were able to get to the inner slot area to make Andrei Vasilevskiy work for his saves. Aaron Ekblad played in his first game since April 2nd, where he had a key block toward the end of the game. We discuss our three stars, when we thought the game was won, and how impactful the crowd was for game one at Amerant Bank Arena. Jon Cooper also spoke to the media and discussed what the Panthers did to make them go away from their game plan. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brings in Jacob Winans(@JacobWinans8) to break down Tuesday's loss to the Montreal Canadiens where the Cats seven game winning streak against the Habs was snapped. On the second end of the back-to-back, the Panthers were already without Carter Verhaeghe(week-to-week) and Matthew Tkachuk(illness). Although the Panthers went into the first intermission with a lead, the wheels fell off after they lost Aaron Ekblad to injury after getting physical with Juraj Slofkovsky. The same bad habits over the last 10 games continued into Tuesday where the Cats were slow moving their feet, losing board battles and not protecting the front of the net, leaving Anthony Stolarz out to dry. Dmitry Kulikov once again had a costly turnover that turned the tides in this one to tie the game at 2. Montral would go on to score four unanswered, including giving up a power play goal, and short handed goal too. Two of the Habs' five goals were unassisted on unforced errors by Florida, where the game became out of reach 33 seconds into the third period when Cole Caufield scored on a wraparound. Frustrations boiled over with a few minutes left in the game as Nick Cousins went to finish a check on Jake Evans that had both Cousins and Montour getting game misconducts, and the Panthers having to be down to multiple 5-on-3's (3 of them to be exact) on the night. The guys give their three stars, when they thought this game was lost, and some prospect news on who has signed with the Panthers as of late. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brings in Florida Panthers (and Marlins) Historian Francisco Oporta to the show to recap the Panthers 6-4 loss against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night, which was a huge swing game in the Atlantic Division. Florida was unable to take care of the puck as Toronto was able to get into multiple passing lanes off their forecheck to consistently created scoring chances from up close. Florida got a glimmer of hope in the second period after cutting the deficit to one right before the Leafs responded less than a minute with one off the forecheck. It was a game with a team that has the most shots from the slot (Toronto)against the team that allows the least amount of shots in the slot (Florida), where it's a place the Leafs lived in quite a bit in the first 40 minutes. Sergei Bobrovsky was chased and the Panthers turned it on in the second period when Anthony Stolarx was inserted into the game. Vladimir Tarasenko led the third period comeback for the Panthers getting 3 points in the third period alone with a goal. and two primary assists, and almost stopped Auston Matthew from clearing the puck before hitting the goal on the empty net. The guys discuss their three stars, when they thought the game was lost, and the mentality of the group now that Toronto has closed the gap for second in the Atlantic. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is here to discuss the last two games for the Panthers where it was up and down as far a results. Florida went to the box 13 times to their opponents' two, which didn't allow them to dictate the pace, especially on Thursday in their loss against the Islanders. Despite clinching a playoff spot on Thursday, the mood in the room was not a happy one after their struggles in March continued. Florida had the SOG advantage on Saturday afternoon despite the penalty troubles continuing, Florida did not allow a goal at 5-on-5 in three out of the four matchups against Detroit(including two shutouts). Aleksander Barkov set the example over the weekend tallying three goals in the two games, and Aaron Ekblad made his presence felt in his second game back from injury to create the goal to Barkov that turned the tides in third period before Florida won in a shootout. Barkov after the game spoke about Paul Maurice's displeasure after the first period that helped ignite them to a win. Florida is now on their last road trip of the season where they pay a visit to Toronto in a possible first round preview where there is a lot on the line as far as clinching home ice in round one and possibly tying the Boston Bruins for first in the Atlantic with a win tonight. Florida set an early tone with creating many chances off the forecheck. Panthers felt Barkov's presence from the moment the puck dropped with him creating the first goal of the game for Evan Rodrigues. Sam Reinhart is now nine goals away from breaking the franchise record in goals after scoring late in the first. On that goal, Eetu Luostarinen got his 100th career point in the NHL. Neither team was able to dictate the pace with the physicality picking up in the second period. Although neither team got a shot on net until midway through the third, it was the Panthers who struck first in the frame with Carter Verhaeghe giving the Panthers the lead at 9:53. Although the Panthers are one of the best third period team in the NHL, the Boston Bruins scored two goals late in the third period to take the game in regulation and the Atlantic Division lead by two points with Florida having a game in hand. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brings in former Host/Producer of the Florida Panthers on Fox Sports Florida, Frank Forte(@FrankJForte). The two recap Florida's 4-1 win in Philadelphia that ended their four-game losing streak. Another game where the Panthers were short handed, but they welcomed back Dmitry Kulikov from his suspension. Florida was committed to protecting the house they ended up blocking 26 shots on the night, which tied a season high. Panthers set the early tone with their shot blocking, especially in the first period where they went on the penalty kill three times. Matthew Tkachuk forced the Flyers to take a penalty at the end of the first period where Vladimir Tarasenko scored 55 seconds into the second period. It all started with a great defensive play by Brandon Montour to deny the Flyers from getting a short handed breakaway on a stretch pass by Scott Laughton to Travis Konecny. With Konecny way up the ice, the Panthers quickly got it back to the Flyers zone where Reinhart from the near side half wall fed Tarasenko on a cross ice pass and converted to give Florida the 2-0 lead. Florida was also really effective in their first pass out of the zone, resulting in two goals off the rush. First one by Sam Reinhart, the other by Carter Verhaeghe. Reinhart and Montour ended up with three points on the night. Florida had to handle Philadelphia creating multiple pushes to start the final two periods, and responded both times in the first five minutes. Philadephia got to the dirty areas in the final 40 minutes, especially off the rush, but Anthony Stolarz stood strong between the pipes saving 32 of 33 on the evening, where the only goal he surrendered was when Flyers coach John Tortorella pulled the Felix Sandstrom with about seven minutes left while on the power play and down three goals. Florida would ice the game where after Reinhart originally missed the empty net in the final minutes, then Luostarinen raced to the puck to avoid an icing, and while battling three Flyers in the nearside corner, got it to Sam Reinhart in the high slot where he got his 50th goal of the season. The guys discuss Reinhart's all-around game in what makes him so valuable in different situations. The two discuss their three stars, and when they thought the game was won. The Cats came into this one with yet another player out with Gustav Forsling not dressing for this one. Despite the lines once again being in the blender, the Panthers effort level was way better than what we saw on Thursday night. Florida led as much as 2-0 in this one, but the Rangers eliminated the lead quickly in the second period where they scored twice in a 2:01 span. The momentum started to shift and it was noticeable with the Panthers miscommunications with not connecting on their passes on their breakouts. There was a point where the Rangers did not allow the Panthers a shot on net for about 14 minutes in between the second and third period. Florida however took the lead late in the third with Carter Verhaeghe scoring his first goal in 14 games. Florida's lead did not last long as Artemi Panarin scored his second goal of the night and after an exciting OT period, this would be settled in a shootout where New York ended up gaining the extra point. The Rangers are now ahead of the Panthers by 3 points with Florida having a game in hand. Florida gained ground on Boston and with Detroit losing, their Magic number to clinch a playoff spot is down to 5. Florida had multiple miscommunications at their offensive blue line and in the neutral zone where the Lightning took advantage and took the early lead and never looked back. Florida's struggled on the PP as they are one for ten in their last two games where they found the post multiple times and Andrei Vasilsevskiy made a game-saving save on Barkov with just under three minutes left in the hockey game. Panthers looked to have cut the deficit to 3-1 when Josh Mahura found a loose puck and scored, but it was wiped off due to Dmitry Kulikov being called for an illegal check to the head on Connor Sheary that led to the goal being disallowed and Kulikov being given a match penalty. Nick Cousins would score later in the game to get his first multi-goal game of the season. Panthers never trailed in this one, but the Devils made a push in the second to tie it midway through the second frame. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is here to break down the Panthers' 4-2 victory against the New York Rangers from Madison Square Garden. Florida gave up the first goal just as the penalty kill came to an end toward the finish of the opening frame. The first period saw neither team fully take control as both teams traded their fair share of chances. Panthers would cash in midway through the second on the power play, thanks to Sam Reinhart. The real conversation on that play was Aleksander Barkov's puck handling ability as he gained the zone. After juggling the puck in mid air while fighting off a check, he was able to distribute the puck to Reinhart to give him his 43rd goal of the season, now third most in a season by a Florida Panther. Play of the year candidate by Barkov? Barkov a few minutes later would dish another assist to Reinhart as both traded give-and-goes, where Reinhart would beat Igor Shesterkin to give the Cats the lead. New York got their second goal on the power play thanks to Chris Kreider, but that was all the scoring that the Rangers would do. There were signs of things to come as the Panthers out-rushed the Rangers and won the face-off battles in the first 40 minutes, but were the better team at 5-on-5. The Panthers were not only penalty free in the third period, but they imposed their will in the third period where zone entries and high percentage shots were hard to come by as the Cats limited the Rangers to five shots in the third period. Ryan Lomberg's goal to give the Panthers the lead was a result of them breaking up the Rangers' speed in the neutral zone, where the would score off the rush. We give our three stars, when we thought this game was won, and turn the page to Tuesday night as the Panthers pay a visit to the New Jersey Devils, who made some changes behind the bench after coming back from their trip out west in California. Anthony Stolarz was between the pipes playing in his 100th NHL game. The Panthers would have multiple leads on the night thanks to Aleksander Barkov and Sam Reinhart getting on the scoreboard, which now has Sam Reinhart at 40 goals after breaking his seven-game goal drought. He is the 4th Panther to score 40 (Bure, Tkachuk, Verhaeghe). Although the Panthers dominated the second period, they would give up the tying goal late in the frame off a faceoff which Canadiens 2022 number one overall pick Juraj Slofkovsky scored on a redirection. With how battle tested the group is and playing in their fifth straight one-goal game, this situation isn't new for the Cats. Even with an early power play goal by Alex Newhook saw the Panthers have a lot of time to at least get a point. Despite going to the box at 12:43 of the third on a penalty by Oliver Ekman-Larsson, the Panthers knew they had to be aggressive if they were going to get out in transition on the penalty kill. Guess who? Sam Reinhart on a sharp angle shot off a give-and-go with Barkov. Reinhart is now tied for the league lead in short-handed goals with Travis Konecny(PHI) and Simon Holstrom(NYI). After an exciting OT that resulted in nobody scoring, Florida would end it in a shootout with Anton Lundell clinching it where he drew Sam Montembault out of his net on a backhand, only to bring it back to his forehand and hit the open net. Florida sweeps the homestand 3-0-0 and now has an identical home and road record at 20-8-2.
