New data from research with 500 HR professionals surveyed in Ireland, published by LinkedIn, has revealed that three-quarters (75%) of Irish recruiters faced challenges finding qualified talent in the past year. The primary barrier identified by the research was finding candidates with the right technical skills, flagged by over half (52%) of HR professionals. Mixed Signals in the Irish Jobs Market Despite ongoing challenges, optimism in the job market remains, with two-thirds (66%) of recruiters planning to hire more in 2025 compared to last year. However, this increased hiring demand comes with its own hurdles. The vast majority (70%) of HR professionals report spending more time proactively sourcing candidates due to a lack of qualified applicants, with only 40% of applications, on average, meeting all preferred qualifications. In addition to the challenge, just under three-quarters (73%) of recruiters believe that many Irish professionals are leaving full-time education without the essential soft skills they need in the modern workplace. Building Talent From Within In response to these challenges, almost four in five (76%) of Irish HR professionals stated that helping employees to upskill would be a top priority for their organisation in 2025. The majority (71%) of talent acquisition teams also believe that their role has evolved, having taken on a broader range of strategic responsibilities like internal mobility and learning and development. AI is Changing How Irish Employers Hire The world of work is being rapidly reshaped by AI, with the skills needed for jobs predicted to change by 70% by 2030. It comes as no surprise that upskilling employees on AI is a key focus for many HR professionals this year. Just over two-thirds (68%) of HR professionals in Ireland have identified upskilling on AI as a key priority. AI-powered tools are also making an impact on hiring processes. Just over seven in ten (71%) recruiters say use of AI in the hiring process has helped them to find candidates faster, while 68% report reduced hiring costs due to increased efficiency. The Ghosting Paradox The research also uncovered a disconnect in candidate experience. Nearly half (49%) of all Irish professionals surveyed have experienced not hearing back from a company after applying for a position. At the same time, 7 in 10 (72%) recruiters admitted that they were unable to individually respond to every application due to the volume of applicants. This communication gap risks damaging employer reputation, with 69% of HR professionals acknowledging that failing to respond could harm their company's image. More than three-quarters (76%) flagged the need for additional tools and resources to improve candidate communication. Commenting on the insights, LinkedIn Head of Ireland, Sue Duke, said: "The tight labour market in Ireland continues to present challenges for employers, especially when it comes to finding candidates with the right skills. However, we're seeing a positive shift with companies focusing on upskilling their teams as a solution to close these gaps. AI is rapidly transforming the workplace, and with it comes both challenges and opportunities. At LinkedIn, we're committed to supporting both businesses and professionals in this shift, with free LinkedIn Learning courses available to help HR teams and jobseekers stay ahead of workplace changes." To support this focus on skills development, LinkedIn is offering: Unlocked LinkedIn Learning courses - LinkedIn will be opening up a number of online learning courses for free to help HR teams upskill on AI, and to help job seekers find their next opportunity. AI-powered coaching within LinkedIn Learning - LinkedIn introduced a new AI-powered coaching feature within LinkedIn Learning Hub that helps learners practise interpersonal skills through interactive scenarios using voice or text. Learners can practise delivering performance reviews, having conversations on work-life balance, and giving...

Much of Earth's land is drying out and damaging the ability of plant and animal life to survive, according to a United Nations report released at talks where countries are working to address the problem. The report was released at the U.N. summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on combating desertification—once-fertile lands turning into deserts because of hotter temperatures from human-caused climate change, lack of water and deforestation. It found that more than three-quarters of the world's land experienced drier conditions from 1970 to 2020 than the previous thirty-year period. At the talks, nations discussed how better they can help the world deal with droughts—a more urgent lack of water over shorter periods—and the more permanent problem of degrading land. If global warming trends continue, nearly five billion people—including in most of Europe, parts of the western U.S., Brazil, eastern Asia and central Africa—will be affected by the drying by the end of the century, up from a quarter of the world's population today, the report warned. Sergio Vicente-Serrano, one of the lead authors of the report, said that as the atmosphere heats up because the burning of coal, oil and gas spews planet-warming emissions, it leads to more evaporation on the ground. That makes water less available for humans, plants and animals, making it harder to survive. Farming is particularly at risk, with drier land being less productive and hurting both yields and the availability of food for livestock, the report said. That can lead to food insecurity for communities worldwide. Aridity also leads to more migration, because erratic rainfall, degrading land and frequent water shortages make it harder for regions or nations to develop economically, the report said. It said the trend is especially noticeable in some of the world's driest areas such as southern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa and southern Asia. The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) published details on the 38,000 home energy upgrades supported through Government funded grant schemes in the first nine months of 2024. This represents an increase of 11% on the number of upgrades for the same period last year, showing continued momentum in home retrofitting. Government expenditure across all schemes reached €279 million, up 34% year on year. Of the homes upgraded, 5,255 were energy-poor homes which benefitted from totally free energy upgrades. The headline outcomes during the first nine months of 2024, across all schemes administered by SEAI, were: 48,300 applications processed across all schemes, up 3% over the same period in 2023. 38,000 property upgrades were completed, up 11% over the same period in 2023. Over 15,000 homes were upgraded to a BER B2 or higher, up 24% over the same period in 2023. Over 5,255 upgrades for energy poverty qualifying households, up 26% on the same period in 2023. Expenditure across all schemes was €279 million, up 34% on the same period in 2023. Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan TD said: "Our retrofitting programme continues to expand which means that more and more people are waking up in warmer, more efficient and healthier homes every year. While we often talk ourselves down in Ireland, when I tell other energy and climate Ministers across Europe about our robust retrofitting rates, they are amazed at the percentage of homes we are reaching, year on year. We cannot be complacent, however, and we have to keep pushing on, particularly with our programme of free retrofitting for low income and energy poor homes. We must ensure that everyone can benefit from the clean, green energy solutions that are available." Dr Ciaran Byrne, Director of National Retrofit at SEAI said: "As has been the case for some time now solar PV is proving a very attractive technology for homeowners. And while application levels in some of the schemes have been somewhat flat in the most recent quarter, there has also been a general uplift in application levels towards the end of the quarter and into Q4. This is likely because during the summer months homeowners focus is often elsewhere. It is only when the colder weather arrives that homeowners focus tends to return to retrofit. "The Government, Department of Environment, Climate and Communications and SEAI have taken several actions during 2024 designed to increase homeowner demand and supply chain participation. These include: a new phase of SEAI's multi-annual marketing and communications campaign, new supports for homeowners availing of the Enhanced Defective Concrete Blocks Scheme, and a new training incentive for heat pump installers. Dr Byrne continued: "Several scheme developments are likely to drive interest and participation in both the short and medium term. These include the support scheme for homeowners affected by Defective Concrete Blocks launched in September and the low interest Home Energy Upgrade Loan Scheme with more institutions due to sign up in the coming months. We are also excited about the traditional buildings pilot programme launched in October, which will provide vital evidence and data which will hopefully unlock access to grants for these typically harder to treat homes". Mariyam Alavi, journalist based in Delhi, reports after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's political alliance won the country's weeks-long general election but his Hindu nationalist party lost its parliamentary majority.
Recent survey results cast a grave shadow over President Joe Biden's hopes for a second term. Last week, a damning poll conducted by Hart Research, Public Opinion Strategies and NBC News was announced, and the results are far from favorable for our current leader. A shocking 75% of voters polled perceive the nation is spiraling out of control and heading in the wrong direction under Biden's leadership. To put this into historical context, this notorious percentage rivaled the all-time peak of 70% witnessed at the end of George W. Bush's term back in 2008. No administration is immune to criticism, and Obama's tenure also had its fair share of controversies that birthed a comparable ratio of 65%. However, these concerns seem unprecedented with the incessant heightening of political unrest under Biden's watch. One cannot fail to note that these statistics vividly highlight the ongoing skepticism around his administration's strategy and its impact on our beloved nation's course. This survey further illuminates the declining trust for Biden in crucial swing states. Among seven swing states, it is worth noting that six are leaning toward Trump, with Wisconsin included. The trust in the Democratic camp seems to be dwindling not just among the neutral voters but noticeably within the heartlands that were long considered Democratic strongholds. An eye-catching revelation from the survey is about the paradigm shift of non-white voters. Traditionally considered the bedrock of Democratic support, these voters appear to be exploring their political options and increasingly side with the Republican Party. Over the past four years, a staggering shift of approximately 40 points in favor of the GOP has occurred, highlighting a change in sentiments among this demographic. It's Tuesday, January 16th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Nigerian Muslims killed 295 Christians over Christmas Fulani Muslim militants killed 295 Christians, men, women, and children in Bokkos, Nigeria and surrounding areas several days over last Christmas, reports TruthNigeria.com. Directly following the attacks on January 4th, the Nigerian police and military arrested 20 civilians, armed with sticks and hunting rifles, who were attempting to protect the remaining villages. No arrests of the terrorists have been recorded as yet. Thousands of grieving women flooded the army and police headquarters for eight hours, publicly wailing and singing Gospel songs in protest of the civilian arrests. Since then, Boko Haram Muslim terrorists killed another 15 Christians in attacks on two villages in northeastern Nigeria. We pray with the psalmist, “Arise, O Lord! O God, lift up Your hand! … Break the arm of the wicked and the evil man. … Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will prepare their heart; You will cause Your ear to hear, to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the Earth may oppress no more.” (Psalm 10:12-18) North Korea's hypersonic missile test Pyongyang Times reports that the North Korean military has just conducted a successful test of a hypersonic missile. North Korea began testing hypersonic delivery vehicles in 2021. The Communist country joins the small club of Russia and China, both of which have implemented this technology for delivering nuclear weapons. The purpose? To assure there will be little or no warning. The United States has still to prove out the technology. British conservatives set for big loss According to a YouGov survey, the Conservative Party in the British parliament is set to lose big time in the upcoming election — with Labour ahead by 385 to 169. This would represent the biggest collapse for a governing party in a hundred years. Taiwan's new president: We want to be independent from China Taiwan has a new president, William Lai, of the Democratic Progressive Party. He was the most outspoken candidate who insisted on Taiwan's independence and self-rule. China responded, stating that the reunification of Taiwan and the motherland is “inevitable.” The communist country called William Lai a “trouble maker” and warned the voters not to vote for him prior to the election. Argentinian president looks to transform socialist government Argentina's new president, Javier Milei, has presented a 351-page omnibus bill to the nation's parliament. It includes a proposal to privatize 41 publicly-owned companies and to abolish price fixing on rent and gasoline. And, according to the Buenos Aires Times, it also calls for the implementation of "a public emergency in economic, financial, fiscal, pensions, defense, tariff, energy, health, administrative, and social matters until December 31, 2025,” to give the executive branch powers to act in these areas. Milei said if the nation's Congress refuses to pass his reforms, he will call for a national referendum. Trump wins Iowa Caucus Here in America, former President Donald Trump has captured the 2024 Iowa caucus, according to multiple early projections, reports The Epoch Times. The Associated Press declared a victory for the former president just 32 minutes into the voting process on Monday night, January 15. With 77% of the vote tabulated, Fox News reported Trump with nearly 51% of the vote, Ron DeSantis with 21%, Nikki Haley with 19%, and Vivek Ramaswamy with 7%. On Monday night, Ramaswamy dropped out of the race and endorsed Trump. TRUMP: “We want to thank the great people of Iowa. Thank you. What a turnout. What a crowd. And I really think this is time now for everybody, our country, to come together. We want to come together. Whether it's Republican or Democrat or liberal or conservative, it would be so nice if we could come together and straighten out the world and straighten out the problems. It's gonna happen soon, too, gonna happen soon. “I want to congratulate Ron and Nikki for having a good, a good time together. We're all having a good time together. I think they both actually did very well. I really do. I think they both did very well. We don't even know what the outcome of second place is.” No Republican has ever won the Iowa caucuses with a margin of more than 12 percentage points. America's frigid blast America is registering record cold temperatures in multiple cities. Chester, Montana, near the Canadian border, recorded a chilly minus 54 degrees Fahrenheit Saturday morning and Dickinson, North Dakota recorded a minus 66 degree wind chill. In addition, everything from Denver to the East coast is registering lower than average temperatures. About 1,700 miles of Nebraska highways were closed. Washington Post laid off 240 staffers, lost $100 million Huge layoffs at the Washington Post as another liberal newspaper is facing financial woes. Jesus said, “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends.” (John 15:12-13). Three-quarters of NFL quarterbacks are Evangelicals And finally, what's with the NFL and the Evangelical Christian faith? PopTheology.com reports that three-quarters of the quarterbacks in the NFL are evangelical Christians. Indeed, 24 out of 32 starting NFL quarterbacks proclaim Christ as Savior. Both the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, Jalen Hurts, and the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, profess an Evangelical faith. Hurts' favorite verse is John 13:7. Plus, he says “you have to keep God at the center.” And Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud also professes faith, saying he plays “to the glory of God.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Tuesday, January 16th in the year of our Lord 2024. In this episode of the Work in Progress podcast, I'm joined by Dr. Nicole Smith, chief economist for Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce and co-author on their new report examining which job skills will be the most in-demand over the next eight years and what kind of education and training will you need to get them. As we start this conversation, it's important to know that most jobs already require some kind of post-secondary education and training beyond high school. "We're not necessarily talking about a bachelor's degree only, or a master's degree, or some sort of technical PhD. We're actually talking about skills in the middle," explains Smith. "We're talking about certificates, test-based certifications, vocational training licenses that deal with these technical jobs, and associate's degrees, as well." Right now, about 68% of the nation's jobs already require that additional training beyond high school. According to CEW's After Everything: Projections of Jobs, Education, and Training Requirements through 2031, as we shift even more toward a knowledge-based, tech-based economy, the percentage of jobs requiring more than a high school diploma will soar to 72% by 2031. CEW researchers project that the U.S. will have 171 million jobs in 2031, an increase of 16 million net new jobs from 2021. During that period, the analysis suggests there will be 18.5 million job openings per year on average, and some 12.5 million of these annualized openings will require at least some college education. According to the report, these latest projections demonstrate the central role postsecondary education plays in preparing the workforce of the future, "despite the fact that young people increasingly doubt the value of a degree and college enrollments continue to decline." Smith says two major factors contribute to the increasing demand for postsecondary education and training – the fastest-growing industries require workers with disproportionately higher education levels compared to industries with slower growth and occupations as a whole are steadily requiring more education as tasks within occupations become more complex. She says it is important that workers and job seekers look at the skills needed as the nature of work changes and seek out opportunities to stay up-to-date on those skills to stay relevant in the job market and advance their careers. "All of our data, all of our information, all of our history, points us to the fact that, in order for you to move up in your job, in order for you to get that promotion, managers are requiring you to have higher levels of education, higher levels of skill, and you have to recognize lifelong learning as a thing now, where you go back and you get that certification" or additional training, says Smith. The crime writer Agatha Christie remains the best-selling novelist of all time even though her death was almost 50 years ago. Her fictional detective Hercule Poirot has attained legendary status, so for a modern novelist to breathe new life into the character is a considerable challenge. However, the English psychological crime author Sophie Hannah has been doing just that. In 2014 she wrote her first novel using Poirot as the central character and we follow her in 2018 as she prepares her third Poirot novel for publication, entitled The Mystery of Three Quarters. Felicity Finch next catches up with Sophie as her fifth Poirot novel, Hercule Poirot's Silent Night, is due to be published.
