In this episode of NHL Wraparound, Neil Smith and Vic Morren turn their attention to the Montreal Canadiens — a team on the rise after breaking back into the playoffs for the first time since their 2021 Stanley Cup Final appearance. The hosts dig deep into Montreal's pivotal offseason, highlighted by a massive trade for defenseman Noah Dobson and the big-ticket extension that followed — 8 years at $9.5M AAV. Is Dobson truly a franchise defenseman? Can he deliver on that contract, especially paired with Calder Trophy winner Lane Hutson?Neil and Vic also explore Montreal's elite prospect pool, including standout names like Ivan Demidov, David Reinbacher, and Jacob Fowler — plus what their development means for the future of the franchise. And with Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Juraj Slafkovsky continuing to grow, the Habs look poised to become a major threat… but are they ready now?
The New York Islanders enter the 2025–26 season with a new GM at the helm, Matthew Darche, replacing Hall of Famer Lou Lamoriello. After finishing 12th in the Eastern Conference last season and missing the playoffs with a 500 record, the Islanders are retooling—and arguably rebuilding.Hosts Neil Smith and Vic Morren break down what Darche inherited, what he's changed, and what it means for a franchise that had the worst special teams index in the NHL last season. Power play? 31st. Penalty kill? 31st. Combine them? Dead last. Both assistant coaches were let go, but the pressure now falls squarely on Patrick Roy, who stays on as head coach. They dive into the loss of key players like Noah Dobson and Brock Nelson, dissect what Emil Heineman, Jonathan Drouin, and David Rittich bring to the team, and consider whether top prospect Matthew Schaefer is ready to fill a top-pairing role on the blue line. With a thin prospect pool and major question marks on the power play, can the Islanders overachieve and make a push for the playoffs? Or is this a transition year with the eyes squarely on the future?IN THIS EPISODE:[00:00] Overview: New GM, missed playoffs, worst special teams in NHL[01:10] Noah Dobson & Brock Nelson departures — big losses[02:45] Offseason signings: Drouin, Rittich, CC, DeAngelo[04:30] Who replaces Dobson's minutes and Nelson's production?[05:50] Can Barzal rebound from injury and stay healthy?[06:30] The outlook for Matthew Schaefer and other young defensemen[07:10] Patrick Roy's challenge: improve special teams or face consequences[08:20] Depth concerns, aging veterans, and overachievement expectations[09:00] Can Rittich or Varlamov give Sorokin needed rest?[09:50] Roy-Darche dynamic: How long is the leash for the head coach?[10:15] Closing thoughts: An Islanders team focused more on the future than the presentKEY TAKEAWAYS:Special teams were historically bad, and improving both units is mission-critical.Noah Dobson and Brock Nelson are major losses, even if Montreal may have overpaid for Dobson. The Islanders are not clearly better on paper heading into 2025–26—they may need to overachieve to stay competitive.Goaltending remains a strength, especially if Sorokin gets support from Varlamov or Rittich.Patrick Roy will be under pressure, both from a new GM and from a fanbase tired of mediocrity. This season may be less about contention and more about transition, with key prospects like Schaefer taking on big roles early.RESOURCE LINKS:

It's a Quick Fix featuring Joe Buono (@IslesFix) and former VP of Communications for the Islanders, Chris Botta (@ChrisBottaNHL).Chris and Joe are back to set the stage for what is set to be a seminal moment in the history of the New York Islanders. The consensus is that the Isles will select defenseman Matthew Schaefer, the consensus pick, with the top pick. That should and will be enough to make it a night of celebration for the franchise, but the weeks-long buzz about what else the Islanders may do to trade back into the 1st round or make a roster-shaking move looms as well. There will be nothing to be disappointed about if the Islanders “only” take Schaefer and then enjoy the Draft Party at UBS Arena, but the fans have been primed for something else. Whether that happens tomorrow or in the days that follow will quickly fill the void of no longer having the anticipation of pick No.1.Plus, we talk about the evaluation phase of Mathieu Darche's first few weeks on the job and the tricky contract negotiation he faces with Noah Dobson that may lead to a homegrown defenseman being on the move. Also, lessons from past drafts, and Chris shares memories of the days that led up to Mike Milbury's big gamble 25 years ago in drafting Rick DiPietro. Ken Holland overcompensates for his team's lack of physicality by allegedly offering Trent Frederic a ridiculous extension. Jonathan Toews relocates to his hometown Winnipeg Jets. Gary Bettman eliminates the idea that state tax laws are an issue for the salary cap. The Blues illustrate their franchise with a new logo and jersey re-design on Monday. 18-Year-Old players anticipate Friday's draft. And Bowen Byram and Noah Dobson are set to evacuate their current teams, making them appetizing trade targets for the Blues.
It's the week of the NHL Draft and we are just eight days away from the beginning of free agency. While there wasn't a lot of news this weekend around the league, there is a lot going on behind the scenes and Frank kicked off today's edition of The DFO Rundown by giving a quick update on the trade market. Are the Sabres getting closer to moving JJ Peterka? Will the Islanders move Noah Dobson by the draft? From there, they dug into their offseason previews for the eight teams in the Western Conference that made the playoffs. They started with the St. Louis Blues, who are facing some big questions this summer. The Minnesota Wild are in a position where they can be hyper-aggressive. The Colorado Avalanche are low on funds, but need to make some moves to fix a roster that was bounced in the first round. The Los Angeles Kings are in an interesting spot with a new GM and boatload of cap space. They kept rolling and hit on the Winnipeg Jets, who are bringing in 3x Stanley Cup Champion Jonathan Toews. What else will Kevin Cheveldayoff do? The guys gave their takes. Vegas never sits still in the offseason and the expectacion is that they will push hard for Mitch Marner. The Dallas Stars already made some spicy decisions after getting bounced by the Oilers in the Western Confernce Final. They still need a coach, but will that be the last big move they make? They wrapped by talking about the Oilers, the McDavid extension, and what they need to do in order to get back to the Stanley Cup Final.Tyler joined for Buy or Sell where he asked about Marner's contract, Jake Allen's place on the goalie market, and the Rasmus Andersson situation in Calgary.1:45 - Peterka, Dobson and more8:20 - St. Louis Blues15:00 - Minnesota Wild21:00 - Contract Extensions (Kaprizov and McDavid)25:45 - Colorado Avalanche32:45 - Los Angeles Kings40:20 - Fill in the Blank52:00 - Winnipeg Jets1:00:00 - Vegas Golden Knights1:05:25 - Dallas Stars1:07:55 - Edmonton OilersWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team?
