Season 3, Episode 14 Today we delve into the language of movement with Eric Blais. He teaches us many life lessons and allows us to talk about some subjects rarely talked about in the sport world. I love the notion that physical activity in the scientific sense can be described as energy in motion. Which if you abbreviate could be written as e-motion. Movement links strongly to our emotions. When you listen to Eric you can literally feel his ability to tune into the movements and the feelings. I think all the athletes listening (and myself) were spell bound by Eric's insights. Eric's words: I always been a highly passionate mover since my childhood. My physical Journey started with figure skating, hockey, baseball, martial arts, volleyball and many more sports and physical practices for more than 40 years now. My professional vision now is to help human beings to become more mentally resilient, emotionally flexible and physically adaptable. To create more awareness of our intrinsic and extrinsic constant interactions from inside-out with our environment and the changes that comes from those interactions. Everything's connected. Éric Blais, Montreal based coach Eric holds an array of certifications including Physical Educator B.Sc., Yoga Therapist (Yoga Resource), PAS (Postural Alignment Specialist Egoscue), Kettel Bell Instructor (Agatsu), Thai Massage Practitioner (Still Light Center, Albert Lee), AIS Stretching (Stretching Canada), ANIMAL FLOW Instructor ® and EBFA Barefoot Training Specialist ® ---------------------------- If you love getting sneak peaks behind the scenes as I provide mentorship to athletes then you will love being a part of the community where you get full access to me, the experts I bring in, and the team of super supporters. Season 3 Unleashed, Episode 10 Eating for Body Composition Never in a million years would I have thought becoming a sports dietitian meant I was ordained the "food police". Yet, so many of my friends, coaches, athletes, and even family members (sigh) see me as having stepped into this role. The Food Police is an idea born out of guilt about what we eat. I didn't invent the idea and we could have a whole podcast episode on our relationship with food, however, in this episode we tackle the idea that we can eat for body composition change. It would be impossible to separate the guilt many experience when eating with a discussion on eating for body composition, so it's in here. There is also a juicy tip on how to view eating for body composition as you move through teen years and growth years. There is so much misguided information out there. Today we give our athletes inside the 4P Sports Nutrition School a chance to ask questions and get clarity on notions they have heard. You will get a peak into the beginning of the conversation. Enjoy! For those looking to join our live mentorship sessions we have 2 ways. #1: Our 11-16 year old athletes can join the 4P Sports Nutrition School and get access to mentorship starting next month #2: Our older athletes can be mentors inside the 4P Sports Nutrition School. Mentorship comes with some amazing perks! Coaches and Parents can message us to be part of our Advisory Committee for the 4P Sports Nutrition School. Our school is still in the early growth phase and we are solidifying a committee of excellent advisors who will guide the successful accomplishment of the Eat This for Performance mission!
Season 3 Unleashed, Episode 9 of the Eat This for Performance Podcast Hosted by sports dietitian, Pearle Nerenberg. Why Do you Train? This is a sneak peak into the conversation we had with our young athletes inside the 4P Sports Nutrition School in June. The young athletes and the school mentors have been working through the important topic all athletes will face at some point: body composition. If you missed the last episode we introduced the topic and shared our thoughts about the perfect athletic body. Today we are digging into training for body composition specifically. We had a special interview with athlete mentor, Victoria Harris, and our other athlete mentors shared some great insights. We all know training for our sport is important to our performance in that sport. But, are you always training for your sport OR are there other reasons why you train. We shed some light on overtraining, training for fun, and a few more ideas come up that will be explored in detail in the next episode on body composition coming out next week.
Season 3, Episode 8 "The Most Important Conversation I Never Had" Welcome behind the scenes of The 4P Sports Nutrition School. Today we tackled what body composition means to us. It's a conversation I never had as a young athlete, and yet, most of my eating choices from the age of 10 came with a question: "what will this food do to my body?". Young athletes, as young as 8/9 years old are caught in the web of societal body pressures mixed with performance body goals. Sometimes coaches even pressure young athletes to look a certain way. It's really too bad we have been shy to talk about this subject. But not anymore. I am diving right in with the amazing mentors in the 4P Sports Nutrition School and I am opening up the conversation for all to enjoy (yes, this conversation should put a smile on our faces!). Food and Body Composition are absolutely linked and the students in my school are being empowered with the confidence to speak about their desires, the pressures they face, and the reality of the situation they are in. Today you get to hear myself, Scott Walford, a collegiate/pro hockey player, Jordan Burgess, a strength and conditioning coach, and Victoria Harris, an elite Volleyball player. We highlight some important challenges athletes face when it comes to Body Composition. The solution to these challenges is to talk about them. Silence is what has been a root cause of so many problems. As young athletes we are shy to say things like "I want to lose weight" or "I am worried what a muscular body will do for my appearance" or "I wish I could figure out how to build muscle faster". But athletes are thinking these thoughts, and the more we talk through the body composition realities and challenges the more we will create CONFIDENT, and FIT athletes. Fitness starts in the mind! So let's get talking. And, if you love this conversation you will love the conversations we are having every week inside the school! The 4P Sports Nutrition School is open to try out for FREE or jump in anytime (go to https://eatthisforperformance.com/the-school). However, you need to join BEFORE July 3 to get into the July session. In July we will be diving into one awesome training on developing The Dream Routine. All our athletes deserve a dream routine and I am excited to see them achieve one in July! To your success, Coach Pearle Pearle Nerenberg is a registered sports dietitian specialized in working with athletes and their families. She is the creator of the Eat This for Performance sports nutrition framework which has helped thousands of athletes apply the science of sports nutrition. Season 3, Episode 7 Welcome to episode 7 of the Unleashed season. We are truly grateful to you, our community, for your continued support and we would like to share that we stand by you in all times of crisis - this time, and the unexpected time when you may encounter an injury. Before I begin sharing today's message with the athletic community, I feel it is necessary to address the importance of racial equality in this world. We can no longer stand silently by and watch people struggle with prejudice and harmful discrimination. I stand with you on uplifting the voices of the oppressed. If you have a story to share with this athlete community please reach out to me. I am here to listen. Now, as I teased, this conversation today is about injury in sport. If you have ever been injured or if you wish to understand what could happen when (and if) an injury strikes, then this conversation is for you. Every week inside of the 4P Sports Nutrition School we are listening to athletes voices and sharing stories of wisdom when it comes to important topics athletes are dealing with. You can now join the program at any time > go to https://et4p.com/go to learn more You can also grab a free performance foods list all of our athletes are using to eat for a better performance (injury prevention and rapid healing) > go to https://et4p.com to grab it!
Episode 5, Getting Cut Unleashed The Eat This for Performance podcast is evolving to become The Performance Games. Over the next several weeks you are witnessing the unleashing of the new podcast direction and the total commitment I have to creating a place for 11 to 16 year old athletes to find mentorship, support, and the best sports nutrition support possible. You are getting to peak into the 4P Sports Nutrition School today. Every week inside of the school we are tackling important topics athletes face every season. Today we spoke about tryouts and getting cut. It’s every athlete’s worst nightmare for those who are competitive and have their sights set on 1 particular team. Getting cut stings and leaves a mark. However, it’s in those darkest moments of despair that many of the world’s greatest athletes have been forged. If you are an athlete who will either tryout for a team, has been in a tryout or wants to heal from a devastating tryout situation, this episode is meant for you. You and the athletes in the 4P Sports Nutrition School are getting to hear 2 very important messages and 2 stories of triumph AFTER getting cut. Have a listen and then join us in the school if you want access to these incredible conversations!
Episode 5 of Season 3: UNLEASHED Calling all athletes. What do you eat before your competition? And if you think now, during a sports shut-down you are far from needing to think about this then I have important news for you. Your competition is thinking about their pre-competition meal… and they will be coming for you! Today’s episode surprised me but it shouldn’t have. There are 4 key messages about the pre-competition meal that surface you will want to hear. You also get to hear from the mentor athletes who have been working behind the scenes to lead the next generation of athletes to figure out something that has eluded our youngest athletes until now. That is, how to understand sports nutrition and ACTUALLY follow the advice. You will first get to meet Alex Rauter, a professional Hockey player with the ECHL’s Indy Fuel. Then Morgan, a AAA high school senior hockey player, Victoria, an Elite Volleyball player and the passionate Jordan Burgess a trainer in Montreal, Quebec. This episode is the defining moment for the Unleashed season of this podcast. The 4P Sports Nutrition School is being Unleashed before your eyes and I am inviting you to peak behind the curtain as you listen in. If you have not heard, there is a new sports nutrition performance enhancer on the block, but it’s not what you think.. It’s a full on, OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD, school with competitive games, next level sports nutrition guidance, and a path to become a great leader. Today you will hear from the mentors inside our school as we tackle the undeniably important pre-competition fuelling zone. Have a listen and you can bet me and the students in the 4P Sports Nutrition School will be practicing our pre-competition meals - even during this non-competitive down time.

Season 3 Unleashed Episode 3 It is May, 2020 and as we look ahead to the coming months in sports we are uncertain about many things in our future. But one thing is very certain, there are some of the greatest athletes in the world who are readying themselves for that future. I knew this back in March when the lockdown first came to my town. I also knew that many athletes would be searching for the best ways to get ready. I looked at the online sports nutrition course I had built for young athletes and I just couldn't let the program sit behind closed doors... so I opened them - wide open. FREE sports nutrition education. Oh yes! Over 1000 athletes jumped on the opportunity in April and many of them flew through the materials. Then, they started to ask the right question, what's next? Well, this program was only every meant to be step 1... Level 1. What was next was Level 2 of course. But was ready? Not really. Did I have a single spare minute to open up a new program... barely. But I did it anyways. I built a Sports Nutrition School (while homeschooling my kids). It's been a HAAAARD month of April. Go listen to my awesome attempts at delivering quality podcasts in the past month if you want a good chuckle.. So now, I thought it would be fitting to offer some behind the scenes about this new direction of Eat This for Performance. In this podcast you will get to know me better, the story of Eat This for Performance, what is next and what I will be leaving behind. I hope you reach out and share your journey with me. Just by listening to this podcast you support my journey.. and I hope we can continue to build this sports nutrition vision together. What results are YOU after? A better math grade? Efficiency at work? Speed on the ice? My name is Pearle Nerenberg. I’m a sports dietitian and the founder of Eat This For Performance, and today I’m digging into what you can do for a better performance. More specifically, how you can achieve that one result that is on your mind, whether you want to be winning more games, scoring more goals, or just getting stronger. Now how do we usually measure our results? With grades! But let’s forget this idea that a low grade is bad and a high grade is good, and let’s start thinking about HOW to change our grades for the better, i.e. improve our performance. I’ve divided this into 4 simple steps: Look at what you are doing and find the missing piece. Is it education? Habit formation? Now how can you fill the gap? Evaluate your practice: Are you practicing the skills you need to get a good result? Measure the timing of your actions: Are you doing the right things at the right time? Find the accelerators: Once you have the basics down, what can you use to accelerate your results? Here at it Eat This For Performance, we strongly believe that sports nutrition has a supporting role for all results. Looking at what foods are being consumed, how they’re being prepared, when they’re being eaten and whether supplementation is being considered is extremely important for all types of performance. To evaluate your athlete’s eating habits and sports nutrition expertise, take the quiz and find out what grade they’ve been given. Then use the information in this podcast to start working towards that A. Another extremely important supporting role to success is parents. And right now we’re working hard to support our hockey parents. Check out the I am FIT Hockey Moms Revival Program, the greatest accelerator to have hockey mom feeling her fittest and most rejuvenated self for her hockey family. Ready to eat for performance today, but not sure where to start? Join our weekly F-Games, our fun food game we play to eat one powerful food every week and one performance recipe.
“There’s always room for salad”....so my parents repeatedly told me growing up. Although it seems like such a simple notion, this one repeated salad-eating behaviour had one of the biggest influences on my underlying respect for my parents, even during my “too cool for you” phase (you know the one...we’ve all been through it). I now realize why this had such a big effect on me. In this episode, I uncover the 6 most powerful influences a human being has on someone else’s eating habits; positive and negative. From rewarding behaviours, to modelling and guiding...what works? And what should we stop doing? Tune in to find out! If you are a parent, coach, or just someone who cares about an athlete’s performance, this one’s for you. Understanding how to create a positive influence for someone is so important. We should all constantly be asking ourselves: “Why am I doing this? and “How I can be doing it better and faster?” Here at Eat This For Performance we guide you through these tough food conversations with your young athletes, using science as our backbone. We strongly encourage you to share your experiences and continue the conversation, and we’ll help you to get ahead in the performance world. Want your athlete to really understand how to fuel their performance? In the ET4P Accelerator Program, I explain the sports nutrition with you. This basics training will take you no more than 90 mins to fully understand most of what you can tell your athlete. For our hockey moms, we have something even more special for you: our upcoming 10-week health and fitness rejuvenation program to get you feeling renewed and in control of your life. The course name, I AM F.I.T., stands for “fit and inspired together.” Because we’re all doing this program together and will be providing daily inspiration to feel energized and beautiful, inspire others, and live vibrantly. Before we launch, be an early bird hockey mom to show your interest and help us shape this program around you.
Introducing the most inspirational coach in the hockey world: Vince Malts. I’m not kidding. He truly believes and constantly strives to be the MOST inspirational coach in the hockey world. As a former professional hockey player, mindset coach, and now owner of bloodline hockey, he completely understands what it takes to be a high performing hockey player. But nothing taught him that more than becoming a father himself. Having children not only gave him a new appreciation and understanding of his hockey family, but it also shaped how he shows up for them. Coach Vinny Malts has been at the forefront of incorporating mindset development through sport. He has been named the Student of the Year from the Mindset Performance Institute for his outstanding work with youth athletes. Vince Malts has coached at the professional and amateur level for over 20 years. He has been featured as a speaker for the USHL, USA Hockey, The Roger Neilson Coaching Clinic, Union College and many others. He is also the host of the Roger Neilson Coaches Podcast. After 10 years of playing minor pro hockey, Coach Vince decided to follow his passion for coaching and mentoring players. He has been fortunate to have coached at the ECHL, EJHL and Tier I U18/U16/U14 levels. Coach Malts has helped build some of the strongest youth hockey programs around the country. He has experience of building successful programs at every level/stage of development. His professional playing journey began in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for the Hull Olympiques, where he was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks. His head coaching journey began over 10 years ago under the mentorship of the Legacy Global Sports family, which is the largest professional youth hockey organization around the world. Since beginning his coaching journey, Coach Vince has helped develop and place players into the National Hockey League, NCAA Division I/III, Canadian Hockey League & the United States Hockey League programs. He has helped to build some of the top ranked teams in the country including a Tier I National Championship. Coach Vince is a certified USA Hockey Level 4 Coach, Mindset Performance Institute Ambassador, Gallup Certified Strengths Coach and International Youth Conditioning Association Specialist. In this interview, Vince describes his holistic approach to coaching hockey. Spoiler alert! It involves identifying what you need to work on and knowing who to go to for help or guidance. His Mantra: I am what I do. “I do” being an acronym that stands for identify, direct and own. An incredibly powerful message he makes sure all his hockey players understand and apply to themselves. Part of the reason Vince considers himself to be such a high performer is because he is committed to certain aspects of his life, which he refers to as his “non-negotiables” - one of them being nutrients. He says it is extremely important to him to know what he is putting in his body and whether or not it is boosting his performance. And when he says performance, he means that in every aspect of his life: supporting his hockey family, coaching, parenting, you name it. At Eat This For Performance, we strongly believe that nutrition is non-negotiable, and we have the resources to help you be your highest performing self through powerful food. Start eating for performance today by downloading the ET4P Starter Kit. SSM Episode #34 Barbara sets the tone for what it means to be a passionate sports mom and advocate for the health and fitness industry. Through her blog, Modern Sports Mom, she has built and inspired a community committed to what she calls the principle of performance as a sports mom: the willingness to make sacrifices in order for children to reach their goals. In this interview, Barbara modernizes the stereotype of the typical sports parent, and enforces the idea that “Super Sports Mom” can mean something different for everyone. She also emphasizes that you don’t need to have a background in sport to be a great sports parent, and it certainly will not come naturally at first. Her advice? Get to know the sport and find a support system. Barbara has worked extremely hard to unite people in sport and build a community who understands the pressure and nerves that one experiences as they watch their child step up to the plate for the first time, and for some, maybe every time after that. It is important to note that behind every success story, there is a parent. And performance eating is just as important for moms as it is for children. Barbara breaks her eating habits down to one simple notion: eat the way that makes you feel better. Eating for performance can be as simple as that. This episode brings an end to the Super Sports Mom season. But stay tuned! The next season will put a whole new spin on what it takes to truly perform at your best when we launch the first season of Do This for Performance! Barbara says it best: Part of being a team involves team bonding. And what better way to bond then through food? How about performance food? With the brand new ET4P team pre-game meal program, teams can eat for performance together and thus, play better together. Coaches can click here to get the FREE team program for their future Champions.

Currently Valmie is the Head Coach for Pierrefonds Soccer Association and oversees all player and coaching development. It is people like Valmie whom I admire tremendously because they are trail blazers and road pavers. Were it not for those who have come before us where would we be today? I think about this a lot. Girls and women have a tremendous place in sport. But look around you. In just about every sport you will see how easy it is to dismiss females from the game. As you might sense, part of my vision of sport is a vision of equality. I do see a world where a girl is a girl who loves sport and not automatically a tomboy. I do see a world where women sit at the table in a prominent place in professional sport. There is a reason why the founding name of this podcast is Super Sports Moms - to acknowledge in the best way I know how that women are behind every single great athlete. In this interview we dig into the difference between coaching girls versus boys and the best parenting line I have ever heard. Period. Hint, hint, I tease it in the first seconds of the podcast! Valmie brings us her many years of wisdom and some insights I will hold dear as I raise my own children to be upstanding active people. Have a listen and if you like what you are hearing please give us a great rating to share these messages with more listeners! Also want you to know we have your back here at Eat This for Performance are giving you a free sports nutrition "Starter Kit to Eat for Performance" you can grab right from our website. Enjoy!!
SSM Episode #32 How to Carry Yourself Like an Athlete with Courtney King When Courtney King saw her first hockey game she had only 6 words to say about it… “That’s what I want to do”. Fast forward a few decades and Courtney is now a sought after skating coach for hockey players near and far. She hails from Los Angelos which isn’t necessarily the first place you think of when you think hockey but clearly Wayne Gretzky legacy is in full effect. Her last name, King, is really a great fit (you’ll know why if you are a hockey buff!). In today’s episode Courtney dives into her story and what led her to be a skating coach, or as she puts it “a skating teacher.” She shares her unique approach to teaching her art using all her skills - a background in dance, theatre and playing the great sport itself! She dives deep into the elements of how to be a great athlete - those same principles that we are teaching here at ET4P in our online e-learning sports nutrition accelerator program (et4p.com/go for more details). Courtney gave us so many great ideas to chew on, here are just a few: -Know what your body is actually doing and not what you think it is doing, often 2 different things -Fuel yourself like a premium race car -Do not play for approval of others -Coaches and Parents tell your players “You should be proud of yourself, not I am proud of you” -And, my favourite, find a way to unlock that superhuman inside of you - you may even need to hear a show-tune
SSM Episode #31 What happens when you are passionate about your sport? You get the story of Neil. Neil Blunden is a hockey coach, former elite hockey player and in general a hockey passionate person. Neil is an Assistant Coach with the McGill University Hockey Team and has been around the world as the Assistant Coach of the Serbian Men’s National Team, Director of Hockey Operations at HK Partizan – Belgrade, Serbia, Coordinator of Hockey Development at Selwyn House School right here in Westmount, QC, and Hockey Instructor in Zagreb, Croatia. In this interview Neil teaches us what it takes to play out a hockey career without regrets. He provides us with amazing advice on becoming an elite athlete and what it takes. The #1 recommendation he lives by is to be passionate about your sport and it is more than just loving to play the game. So listen up to the nuances on this one! Neil gives us some insight into how to select a good camp for your athlete, how to be a great coach, and what scouts are actually looking for that is important to acknowledge. One of the things we know elite coaches are looking for is a deep passion for your sport. If you are struggling to feel excited to do your sport perhaps you are missing something. We’d like you to first look at what you’re eating because it could be as simple as that. If you have great materials fuelling your brain you will be more excited to do everything. The link between what we eat and what we think is strong. But we won’t leave you hanging. Here at Eat This for Performance we are spending 5 days with you to help you uncover your path to better fuelling for your sport. Better fuelling will help you with your energy levels, your fitness goals, and your mental game - all of these are your Performance Body. SSM Episode #30 Dr. Jordan Anderson's article about mental health of athletes on cross-ice hockey website caught our eye and we instantly invited him to our podcast. For anyone in sports we believe that mental health is the most important conversation we should be having. Dr Anderson is a family medicine resident at Queen’s University and aspiring sports medicine physician. He grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan, and completed medical school at the University of Saskatchewan. He works mainly with junior hockey and football athletes. He also had the honour of working with the Canadian Medical Team at the University Games in Taipei, Taiwan in 2017. Anderson played every sport growing up and has more recently fallen in love with CrossFit, and in 2019 finished as the 30th ranked MD in the Worldwide Open (1st in Canada!). During the interview we delve into his climb to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. He talks about how visualization and meditation helped him get there! Dr Anderson formed a passion for mental health in medical school where he advocated for student health on a provincial and national level. He received one of the 2018 CFPC Medical Student Leadership Awards for these efforts. Anxiety and depression can ruin careers and lives. We here at Eat This for Performance support the efforts of parents, athletes, and coaches to get talking about mental health. More discussions = more solutions! In fact we are rolling out some discussions and providing some solutions in more depth in our 5 day challenge to Map Your Performance Body. As we see it, great mental health is needed for a top performance. Go to et4p.com/challenge to learn more.

SSM Episode 26 She texted me at 7:22 in the morning. Margot - "Hi Pearle! Omg what a weekend! Elise's team won the Dodge Cup :). Elise stood on her head in the finals and was awarded player of the game. She was in tears because it is her last year in youth hockey. A great way to finish! I'm exhausted - I feel like I played all weekend!
SSM Episode 25 This episode dives back into the topic of body composition in sport that we started a few weeks ago. Some might say it is a touchy topic but as you will learn from Jason today, there is a lot of benefit to speaking up and sharing wisdom! Coach Jason McCullagh is the Director of Athlete Performance at Conker Fitness and Founder/Co Owner of Mettle Sports Training . Coach McCullagh has been working with young athletes since he built the Strength and Conditioning Program for the Maverick Volleyball Club in Ottawa in 2005 and subsequently launched the brand Mettle Sports Training to support volleyball athletes more broadly. While his focus was Volleyball athletes for many years, he also works with Soccer, Baseball and Hockey athletes on a regular basis. His approach is very much keeping things simple where every exercise has a reason to be there, no ‘fluff’. Coach McCullagh’s focus on building long term relationships and development strategies with athletes and their parents will improve performance, reduce injury potential and educate athletes at every touch point. In this interview we get into some specific details about training and body composition for the teen athlete, we tackle the goal of training and how it relates to the athlete’s physique. We also get introduced to Jason’s philosophy on testing body composition and I have to say it is refreshing. As a former collegiate athlete who was body fat tested regularly I wish I had more of Jason’s approach. A confidence in body composition can support a confidence in an athlete on and off the field of play or the ice rink. To support our athletes this spring we are offering a 5 day coaching experience to map out their performance body. This does mean addressing the big discussion about body composition but I think you will find our approach and our philosophy to be a game changer. Go to https://et4p.com/challenge to sign up for our Map Your Performance Body challenge kicking off the beginning of May.

SSM Episode #11 In this episode I interview our scientist-turned-educator and 100% hockey mom, Christine Bell. I loved Christine's interview because we brought up 2 important conversations: - The need to be split into 2 or 3 places, and one way she overcame this problem - What coaches could be focussed on to help make the program even better for our young athletes A bit about Christine... Christine received her PhD in neuroscience, with a focus on the neural basis of ingestive behavior – how brain cells relay information about sensing hunger or fullness and responding to it to make the right decision: eat or don’t eat. After her PhD and some post-doc work, she had both of her children, Nikko, now 10, and Anja, 7, both of whom play hockey. Christine left science to spend more time with her kids and pursued and other passion in education, where she has been ever since. She is now currently a professor of biology, and weaves her knowledge of biomechanics, cellular biochemistry and physiology, and micro nutrition into how she prepares her kids for sport as well as school. This episode was hosted by Pearle Nerenberg, the founder of Eat This for Performance - home of the Confident Athlete. Go grab our free performance foods guide: www.et4p.com/start-here
