The Automotive Troublemaker w/ Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier
Shoot us a Text.Episode #1039: Today we're talking about Carvana's record-setting quarter and bold new goal, Ford's strategic price hikes post-tariffs, and why Google's stock took a beating after an Apple exec dropped a courtroom AI bomb.Show Notes with links:Carvana has bounced back in a major way, setting a new quarterly record for used-vehicle sales and showcasing the company's transformation from high-growth chaos to sustainable profitability, even amid looming tariff concerns.Q1 retail sales hit 133,898 units, up 46% year over year—beating their prior record by 16,000 vehicles.Net income reached $373M; revenue surged 38% to $4.2B.Tariffs caused a temporary demand bump, but Carvana is now focused on adapting inventory to price-sensitive consumer behavior.Carvana aims to sell 3 million vehicles annually within 5–10 years, targeting a 13.5% adjusted EBITDA margin by fully utilizing its existing infrastructure like ADESA megasites and inspection centers.CEO Ernie Garcia emphasized flexibility: “We've got significant margin to work with… and significant cash balances.”As the auto industry adjusts to newly announced tariffs, Ford is selectively increasing prices on several 2025 models while shielding current dealer inventory.Starting May 2, 2025 Mavericks, Bronco Sports, and Mach-Es (all produced in Mexico) will see MSRP increases of $600–$2,000, depending on trim and features.Existing stock and vehicles already in transit will keep their original sticker prices.Earlier this week, Ford withdrew its 2025 outlook, citing $1.5B in expected tariff-related earnings impact.Ford is one of the first major automakers to publicly respond to the impact of the tariffs with pricing strategy.“We can't forecast what we can't see,” said one executive privatelyIn a courtroom twist, an Apple executive may have confirmed Google's worst fear—that AI is starting to eat into its search dominance.Eddy Cue, Apple's services chief, testified that Safari searches dipped in April for the first time ever, likely due to users turning to AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity.Cue expects Apple will eventually add AI search engines as user-selectable options in Safari. The revelation came during Google's antitrust trial, where Apple disclosed it receives over $20B annually to keep Google the default.Google stock fell more than 7% following Cue's testimony, wiping out tens of billions in market cap. They responded by saying “we continue to see overall query growth,” especially from Apple platforms.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Starting May 7, you will have to have a REAL ID to board a U.S. domestic flight. But so much has changed in the 20 years since Real ID was first proposed, is REAL ID 20 years out-of-date?
On Thursday, a shake-up in the President's cabinet: after it was announced that Mike Waltz would no longer serve as Trump's National Security Advisor, the President announced he would tap Waltz as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Now, Secretary of State Rubio will reportedly take up the role of interim NSA to the President, as many speculate the decision to relieve Waltz and several NSC staffers stems from the Signal group chat leak weeks ago. FOX News Sunday anchor Shannon Bream joins the Rundown to discuss the Waltz news and breaks down several different Supreme Court cases. The REAL ID Act was enacted in 2005, several years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, after it was discovered that the hijackers used California IDs to board the planes. Now, nearly two decades later, the deadline to obtain a REAL ID is approaching. Starting May 7, Americans will need a REAL ID (or a passport) to fly domestically or enter government buildings. As the deadline draws nearer, many people are left feeling confused and unprepared for this new requirement. Adam Stahl, the Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Deputy Administrator at the Transportation Security Administration, joins us to explain the reasons behind this requirement and what individuals need to do to comply. Don't miss the good news with Tonya J. Powers. Plus, commentary from the host of the “Kennedy Saves The World” podcast, Kennedy. Photo Credit: AP Learn more about your ad choices. We are less than a month away from the Real ID deadline. Starting May 7, you will need a special driver's license to board a plane, even if you are flying domestically. According to the Department of Vehicle Services, 60 percent of Minnesotans do not have a Real ID. And many are now rushing to the DMV. Several counties in the Twin Cities are reporting 3-4 hour waits. Getting a Real ID is a bit of a more complicated process than getting a driver's license. Minnesota Now host Nina Moini talked to Jody-Kay Peterson, the program director of driver services at Minnesota's Department of Public Safety, to answer your questions.
There's a new cancer prevention program for hundreds of firefighters across Connecticut. Rhode Island's multi-platinum John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band, will be celebrating 50+ years in the business with the release of "Sound of Waves," a new 13 song album, their first in 37 years. In 1982, John Cafferty was commissioned to write and perform the soundtrack for a film that turned out to be "Eddie and the Cruisers,' a rock cult classic with a triple platinum soundtrack. Cafferty's soulful, raspy voice propelled the movie's theme "On the Dark Side" to # 1 on the Billboard Rock charts and the MTV video charts, while the movie's second hit "Tender Years" rose into the Top 10 of the Billboard AC charts. Today John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band continue to tour around the world. That tour will bring them to NYC for an album release concert at the Cutting Room on Thursday, April 10th, the same date as the album release, from Moonstone Music. According to Cafferty, the new album almost didn't happen. After almost four decades of not writing and recording new music, he was encouraged by Bruce Springsteen to do it again. Over the years, Cafferty and company have jammed on stage with many of the greats of rock and roll, including Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Dion, and opened on tour with the Beach Boys, Foreigner, and Bryan Adams. Starting May 28th, Cafferty joins Rick Springfield on his "I Want My 80s Tour" for selected dates, along with John Waite and Wang Chung."The 'Sound of Waves' album is a celebration of a lifetime legacy as musicians and 50+ years as a band. The songs are newly written with a respectful reflection of colors from an era of music's diverse history and the precious life moments and loving relationships that have served as our hearts' inspiration," said Cafferty. The title track from the group's 1985 album, "Tough All Over" became their second # 1 on the Billboard Rock Charts and the song "C-I-T-Y" reached the Billboard Top 20. Over the years, John has placed 35 songs in major motion pictures. They included Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky "IV," and "Cobra." The Farrelly Brothers hit films "There's Something About Mary" and "Dumb and Dumber Too," & Eddie and the Cruisers I and II. The lead single from the group's upcoming album is "Day In the Sun," which was spotlighted in Peter Farrelly's film "Rick Stanicky." Here's a video link of a live performance: Https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1xHCR8BDus All songs on the new release were written by Cafferty. Here are 3 big things you need to know— One — Ford Motor Company has announced that it would allow car shoppers to buy its 2024-25 vehicles at the discounted price the automaker offers to its employees. Called "From America, For America," the promotion was unveiled on the same day a new 25% U.S. tariff on foreign vehicles took effect. Two ---- Former heart surgeon and TV star Dr. Mehmet Oz was confirmed Thursday to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The 64-year-old will manage health insurance programs for roughly half the country, with oversight of Medicare, Medicaid or Affordable Care Act coverage. And number three — The TSA's deadline to have a REAL ID license is just over a month away. Starting May 7th, Americans will need to have a REAL-ID compliant driver's license to take domestic and international flights. If you don't have one, you'll need a passport or secondary ID to travel through security checkpoints. Unless, of course, they postpone this deadline yet again.
(AURN News) — If you love shopping on Temu and Shein, get ready to pay more. President Donald Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs are putting an end to a key tax exemption that has allowed cheap shipments from China to reach your doorstep without extra costs. A rule called the "de minimis" provision lets Chinese e-commerce companies ship products under $800 directly to U.S. customers without paying customs duties. That's changing. "Imported goods sent through means other than the international postal network that are valued at or under $800 and that would otherwise qualify for the de minimis exemption will be subject to all applicable duties, which shall be paid in accordance with applicable entry and payment procedures," the White House said in a fact sheet. Starting May 2, anything that used to qualify for this exemption will now come with a duty of either 30% of its value or $25 per item. That jumps to $50 per item on June 1. The executive order makes it clear: "Duty-free de minimis treatment under 19 U.S.C. 1321(a)(2)(C) shall no longer be available for products of the PRC (which include products of Hong Kong) described in section 2(a) of Executive Order 14195, as amended by Executive Order 14228." This change affects all Chinese goods, whether they arrive through regular shipping methods or the postal system. "All relevant postal items containing goods that are sent through the international postal network that are valued at or under $800 and that would otherwise qualify for the de minimis exemption are subject to a duty rate of either 30% of their value or $25 per item (increasing to $50 per item after June 1, 2025). This is in lieu of any other duties, including those imposed by prior Orders," according to the White House fact sheet. So if you've been scoring deals on inexpensive clothes, accessories, and gadgets from China, expect to see higher prices at checkout soon. Learn more about your ad choices. Starting May 7 all U.S. flyers will need a real ID to get through security and federal buildings. Aimee Inama, PennDOT’s spokesperson joined The Spark to share what we need to know before the deadline. Asia: Okay, so let's start with the basics. What exactly is the real ID and why was it introduced? Aimee: A real ID is a federally acceptable photo ID or driver's license. And it's a convenient way for people to use to fly domestically, enter certain federal buildings that require a federally acceptable ID or military bases. The federal government set a deadline of May 7th for the enforcement of the of the Real ID Act. and it is a federal act. So in Pennsylvania, real ID is optional. And what that means is Pennsylvanians can choose whether or not they want to get a real ID. So they can say, I'm gonna get the real ID and they'll be set. Or they need to have another form of federally acceptable ID, such as a passport on or after May 7th to do, to fly domestically enter certain federal facilities, as well as military bases. Asia: What are the key differences between a standard Pennsylvania driver's license and Real ID? Aimee: You do have to do this anyway for a regular driver's license as well. You have to show certain documentation. But for a real idea, you need to show proof of identity, which is in the form of a birth certificate or a valid passport. You have to show proof of social security number, which could your social security card or a W -2. And the key is that proof of social security number has to show all nine digits. You do have to show two proofs of Pennsylvania residency. So that could be a driver's license, a vehicle registration, utility bill, something like that. And you also need to show proof of legal name change if you had one. And all of those documents are on our website so people can see the list of the acceptable documents that we take. Asia: Who needs to get a real ID and is it mandatory for all Pennsylvanians? Aimee: In Pennsylvania, it's optional, so that means you Pennsylvanians can choose whether or not they want to get a real ID. So, we have a little quiz on our website, so people should go to that quiz, take it, and that will determine whether or not a real ID is right for them. So, and like I had mentioned before, a real ID is needed in order to... It's a convenient way for people to fly domestically, enter certain federal buildings that require a federally acceptable ID. or inter -military bases. So, and like I said, in Pennsylvania, it's optional. So that means if you don't want a real ID, you just need another federally acceptable ID, which is a passport. So, if you don't have a real ID and you wanna fly domestically and you have a passport. Listen to the podcast to hear the entire conversation. Today we're talking about GM's HQ move after 50 years. We also talk about Carmax's major reduction in the customer return window, as well as an unintended acceleration issue with the Cybertruck. Show Notes with links:General Motors is relocating its headquarters from the iconic Renaissance Center to the newly constructed Hudson's Detroit skyscraper, heralding a major shift in Detroit's downtown development and GM's operational focus.GM is planning its move to a 404,000-square-foot office space in the Hudson's Detroit project by 2025.The future of the Renaissance Center, Detroit's iconic complex since the 1970s, is now under review for potential new uses as GM did not announce plans to sell the property. This relocation reaffirms GM's commitment to Detroit, aligning with the city's broader downtown revitalization efforts led by billionaire Dan Gilbert."Together with Bedrock, the city and the county, we are reimagining the Renaissance Center for its next chapter," says GM CEO Mary Barra.CarMax is reducing the time customers have to return purchased vehicles. Starting May 12, the window for vehicle returns and refunds will be shortened from 30 days to 10 days.CarMax is modifying its Money Back Guarantee to 10 days, a significant reduction from the previous 30-day window. This change will take effect on May 12, but CarMax will honor the 30-day return period for vehicles purchased on or before May 11.The decision to shorten the return period is a response to "experiential headwinds" affecting customers and associates, as noted during CarMax's fourth-quarter earnings call.CarMax CEO Bill Nash said during the company's fourth-quarter earnings call, "A lot of our customers take advantage of it well before the 30 days. You get past the 10, some people are just working the system."Tesla has temporarily stopped deliveries of the Cybertruck due to an unforeseen accelerator problem, causing significant inconvenience for customers awaiting their vehicles.Tesla notified a client, “We have just been informed of an unexpected delay regarding the preparation of your vehicle. We need to cancel your delivery appointment on Sunday and we will reach out again when we're able to get you back on the schedule. We apologize for the inconvenience and look forward to hosting your Cybertruck delivery soon!”Tesla is pausing Cybertruck deliveries, informing customers of an unexpected delay linked to vehicle preparation issues.A buyer reported on the Cybertruck Owners Club that the halt is due to a recall for an accelerator issue, although Tesla has not confirmed this.A video surfaced on TikTok highlighting a potential safety hazard with the Cybertruck's accelerator pedal, involving excess lubricant causing the cover to slide and jam.Tesla plans to resume deliveries on April 20, but the ongoing issues may impact future delivery schedules.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email
