Caitlin Stryker grew up a railroad brat, never living in any city for longer than a few years as her father's railroading career kept the family on the move. With her gypsy spirit firmly in place, she splits time between the three cities she calls home: NYC, LA, and Vancouver, BC. She started her career in the performing arts as a ballet dancer performing with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's Young Performers Ensemble, where her love for emotional freedom was established. Caitlin was then scooped up by Elite modeling agency in Toronto, which fluidly led to her acting career in Film/TV. Her love of film has even put her behind the camera as she co-produced multiple shorts, and Award-Winning feature films, with her husband Bradley Stryker. In this episode we ‘get into it' with Caitlyn about: -Moving throughout childhood-Recreating identity-Stage and camera acting-Getting over stage fright and moreFollow Caitlyn on IG or visit her IMBD.

Fraser-Monroe tells us more about how this unique choice underscores the importance of authentic oral history within Indigenous storytelling as well as engaging audiences on a deeper level.Looking ahead, Cameron shares his vision for the future of ballet in Canada, emphasizing the need for greater diversity and originality. At Canada’s National Academy of Dance Education, we love providing insight into the various realms of not only a dancer's training, care and education, but that of their post-secondary aspirations as well. These post-secondary aspirations are not only relevant after dancers have left their school, as dancers' decisions are highly influenced by their dance educators, directors, studio owners and classmates. The role dance educators play in preparing dancers for the future in dance is very important. These aspirations could include everything from career goals, to professional training and education. Today we will gain insight into the hiring process of one of Canada’s Professional Ballet Companies the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Today’s tips will hopefully help guide dance educators as they prepare their dancers for their careers, dance-related or not. We are pleased to welcome the associate artistic director of Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet to our program today Ms. Tara Birtwhistle. After graduating from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School in 1991, Ms. Brithwhistle was hired into the Royal Winnipeg Ballet company eventually accepting the role as principal dancer. Birthwhistle holds many accolades including: MacLean’s “One of 100 Young Canadians to Watch”, her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and a Gemini award. Since retiring from the stage, Birtwhistle has been an integral part of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet artistic team. At the end of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s 2017-18 season, Birtwhistle was appointed Associate Artistic Director of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. As Associate Artistic Director, Birtwhistle is a member of the senior leadership team, participating in strategic planning with responsibilities including casting, scheduling, development, marketing and overall management of the artistic team.

At Canada’s National Academy of Dance Education we know that dance teacher training, is so much more than learning steps. It is an understanding of various components of a dancer's training and technique, some of which include anatomy, dance injuries, dance history and music. To better support dancers’ “whole dance education” dance educators should be able to use music as a tool, as inspiration and method through which students can learn about their execution, performance and art form as a whole. Today we will focus on one exercise in ballet, “the adagio” to learn how time signatures can affect its execution. GUEST: Ms. Leal holds a BFA in Performing Arts from Providence College in Manitoba. She has worked as a piano accompanist for over 19 years with some of Canada’s most prestigious schools and companies including the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Alberta Ballet Company and Albert Ballet School. In addition to her work as a piano accompanist for ballet exams and Ms. Leal has also taught music to ballet teachers throughout various programs.

Full attention and soaking up every word. This is the picture that Evelyn refers to in our conversation. (Picture courtesy of Evelyn Hart) Friends!Welcome to this only, or maybe first episode of the Late to the Party Ballet Podcast! I started working with Evelyn Hart a couple of months ago, and you can read the full story of how that came about in one of my recent blog articles. Right from the start I realized that I really enjoyed talking with her, beyond the ballet that she was teaching me. I was dying to ask her more questions, but despite Covid-related closures, our schedules were packed and there wasn't much time around classes to chat. But because I felt like her story offered so many gifts, I thought – why not ask her if she would be up for a conversation that we could share with others? She graciously agreed. And so here we are! What I only more recently learned, and what makes this conversation so relevant for us adult ballet starters, is that Evelyn started ballet quite late as a teenager, so a lot of her experience as a dancer revolved around “feeling behind” and “catching up”. Sounds familiar? :-) Picture courtesy of Evelyn Hart. Evelyn is considered one of Canada's most famed and accomplished ballerinas. She started dancing at 14, joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet when she was 17, and was promoted to principal dancer four years later. She won the gold medal at the International Ballet Competition in Varna, Bulgaria, at 24, upon which she started guesting and for the first time diving into lots of classical repertoire - at an unheard pace - all over the world. What sounds like a prodigy-type journey is to a large extent also a story of rejections, overcoming limited turnout, and dealing with lots of stage fright and self-doubt. But it is also a story of incredible grit, perseverance, an incessant drive to figure out ballet technique from the inside out, and an exceptional musicality and artistry that would become the key to Evelyn's remarkable career. Evelyn now lives in Toronto and is a sought-after coach, teacher, and mentor to professional and pre-professional dancers. She is a Companion of the Order of Canada, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and has received a Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement. We talk about how long it took her to overcome her late start and what advice she has for adult beginners who struggle with the “late start shadow”; what kept her going after being rejected from the National Ballet School THREE times; her take on pelvic alignment for exploring full turnout and hip joint rotation; why she chose to dance in pointe shoes that were soft as socks; the role of musicality in fundamental ballet technique; how she would start working with an absolute adult beginner; and gift of being uncompromising in any pursuit. For me, this conversation unlocked a new self-perception around being a student and dancer who started late in life. Hearing from someone so accomplished that, really, you can CREATE at any point in your life, no matter at what age you started, was like getting a fresh infusion of purpose into my daily ballet practice. I hope you'll get it to – and much more beyond it. Please enjoy! Picture courtesy of Evelyn Hart.

At Canada’s National Academy of Dance Education we know that by allowing our dance educators to hear a variety of perspectives with regards to teaching dance, that they will become more well-rounded dance educators that will allow them to access a variety of sources and strategies in these diverse studio environments. Which is why the perspective of the dancer matters. Today we are gaining some insight into the life of a professional ballerina. We will hear about some teaching styles that inspired her, and those that left her feeling weak and humiliated. We are very excited to have the brave, transparent, articulate, motivated and hardworking Sarah Murphy Dyson speaking with us today. Sarah Murphy-Dyson was a 1st soloist with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. After retirement, she was cast in the North American premiere of Dirty Dancing (Mirvish) which brought her to Toronto. Don McKellar and Tina Keeper and Face2Face host David Peck talk about their new film Through Black Spruce, residential school and family history, responsibility of Canadians, a lack of understanding and stories and truth. Trailer Synopsis The film was shot on location in Moosonee, Moose Cree First Nation, Sudbury, Atikameksheng Anishinawbek First Nation, Killarney and Toronto, Ontario and it’s a ‘Collaboration and reconciliation,’ says producer Tina Keeper. ‘That’s what this production was all about. Indigenous and non-indigenous filmmakers coming together to tell a story that mattered to everyone.’ It’s the project she’s been building towards since founding Kistikan Pictures back in 2010, in partnership with Buffalo Gal Pictures in Winnipeg. The company is dedicated to the development and production of film and television with Indigenous artists. Based on the Giller Award-winning novel of the same name by Joseph Boyden, Through Black Spruce is a story of identity and survival. The disappearance of a young Indigenous woman named Suzanne Bird triggers events in two worlds: in Moosonee, the remote Northern Ontario community she fled years ago, and Toronto, where she modelled for a while before vanishing into the ether. Her sister Annie is a hunter, a fiercely-independent woman who’s always resented her weaker twin. But their mother’s despair sends her south to retrace Suzanne’s steps. Her life in Moosonee soon recedes as she’s drawn into the glittering “artists and models” scene her sister left behind. Meanwhile, her uncle Will copes with the dangerous consequences of Suzanne’s disappearance… and comes up against the ghosts of his own private tragedy. The two worlds finally collide in the fallout from the missing woman's troubled life. Biography Don McKellar Don McKellar was born in Canada and has had a varied career as a writer, director and actor. He was the screenwriter of Roadkill and Highway 61, and co-writer of Dance Me Outside, the Genie Award-winning Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould and The Red Violin (he also appeared in the latter two). He received a Genie Award as Best Supporting Actor for his role in Atom Egoyan’s Exotica and the Prix de la Jeunesse at Cannes for his directorial debut, Last Night, which he also wrote and starred in. He also wrote, directed and played the lead in his second film, Childstar. His stage writing credits include the five plays he co-created with the Augusta Company and the book for the musical The Drowsy Chaperone, for which he won a Tony Award. He also wrote and starred in the CBC television series Twitch City. Other film and television appearances include David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ, Atom Egoyan’s Where the Truth Lies and the series Slings and Arrows for the Sundance Channel. He collaborated on the film adaptation of Jose Saramago’s Nobel Prize-winning novel Blindness. Directed by Fernando Mereilles, he also starred with Julianne Moore, Gael Garcia Bernal and Mark Ruffalo. His recent work includes the Max Films feature The Grand Seduction, for which he won a DGC Award for Best Direction in 2014. Tina Keeper Tina Keeper is Cree, originally from Norway House Cree Nation, now a Winnipeg based media producer. She is President of Kistikan Pictures, a partner company to Buffalo Gal Pictures. Raised in the small Canadian town of Harrow, Ontario, Craig learned to ice skate almost as early as he learned to walk.  His competitive nature was stoked by participating in the country’s favorite sport- hockey.  Craig’s artistic spirit drew him to the intense physicality and discipline of ballet, and he joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet as a student, and later danced with the company. ?The lure of the stage soon called and Craig answered appearing in numerous original theatrical hits on Broadway and pre-Broadway such as “Mamma Mia!”, "Fiddler On The Roof Revival" with Rosie O'Donnell and Lea Michele, Stephen Sondheim's "Bounce", "Matthew Passion", "A Kiss From Alexander" and "Chitty, Chitty Bang, Bang."  He also has appeared in television and films in such projects as “Once Upon a Mattress” with Carol Burnett and GLEE’s Matthew Morrison, "An Englishman in New York" with John Hurd and Cynthia Nixon, and the daytime soap opera “All My Children" with Susan Lucci.  Along the way, Craig trained fellow performers using his vast understanding of kinesiology, muscle building and weight loss techniques, and nutrition which lead to him being one of the most sought after celebrity trainers. Craig is very close to his family, this lead him to a greater knowledge of wellness and health because he was determined to take care of his mother Lenore, who was in constant pain. Craig's mom was finally diagnosed with "Fibromyalgia" in early 2000, which sparked Craig's focus to take care of not only his mothers’ health and wellness, but for all people.  Craig developed his unique understanding of the importance of the "Mind, Body and Spirit" connection and this message has helping his mother succeed in her health and countless others to date.
