Today on the show Jodi interviews Lindsay Bryan-Povin, author of The Financial Anxiety Solution (Ulysses Press, 2020). Here are some highlights from their conversation: Jodi and Lindsay discussed the origin of her book. Lindsay was a creative kid but did not necessarily see herself book writing as an adult. As an expert voice in the world of finances for couples, Lindsay looked at authorship as a way to stand out in a flooded field when she was approached by a publisher to write this book. Because Lindsay’s book was published traditionally, she didn’t have total control over the schedule. Once she had a deadline for manuscript submission, she treated writing like academic work and shifted her schedule to make room for book writing. Once she changed to schedule to allow for a full day of writing, Lindsay was able to get into a groove and it made a huge difference in productivity. One of the parts of the process that required a learning curve for Lindsay was writing long-form nonfiction, for readers who need repetition. The tendency to see something as repetitive when it was actually necessary within the manuscript took Lindsay some time to get used to. Lindsay has been strategic about marketing, and she began to pitch podcasts and publications two to three months before the book’s publication in late February 2020. When in-person events were canceled beginning in March 2020, Lindsay doubled down on podcast interviews, which has created a lot of opportunities she hadn’t originally anticipated. The topic of her book — financial anxiety — is certainly timely, but it’s important to Lindsay to not appear opportunistic and keep the focus on serving readers. Lindsay shared two pieces of advice for aspiring author-entrepreneurs: First, on down days, allow yourself to feel the “woe is me” but then remember all the earlier effort you’ve put in, and don’t let that effort go to waste. And second, put your limiting beliefs aside and stay out of your own way. Lindsay noted that she doesn’t love social media, yet Instagram has brought lots of opportunities to her. Lindsay and Jodi discussed how there seem to be two types of people in the world right now, mid-coronavirus pandemic: those who are doing “all the things” and those who can’t seem to focus, let alone read, write, learn a new hobby, etc. Both Jodi and Lindsay are in the latter camp, but Lindsay shared that she has Untamed by Glennon Doyle in her to-read stack when some normalcy returns. Lindsey took big leaps, and made radical shifts to create a life that is now more balanced, inspired, and most importantly, satisfying by her own standards. Also in this episode, Sheena and Lindsay dive into an important topic, Instagram, and how it can be used as a source of inspiration and light amidst pop culture today. Find Lindsay here: Website // Shop // Facebook // Twitter // Instagram // Pinterest Lindsay is the designer behind The Joyful Jewelry Box, where she makes one-of-a-kind jewelry inspired by her namesake. After working in human resources and mental health, a series of life events led Lindsay to open her Etsy shop in early 2014. Lindsay's style is primarily bohemian and she strives to create joy with each piece that she makes. Lindsay lives in Nipomo, CA with her husband, Brandon and their dog Trooper. We are big fans of our friend Lindsay! She has been a She Percolates supporter from the beginning so it was super fun to get to chat with her! We could have chatted for H-O-U-R-S! As we do every week we ask our guests what their definition of success is. Every week Danielle and I nod our heads and silently scream "YES" as we hear each guests answer. This week was no different! Lindsay said: "Success is about embracing my worth as a person aside from my profession, my achievements, and my failures!" Ladies {and any gentlemen followers we might have}, this is such a great reminder! We cannot and should not base our success solely on our work! Your life is about so much more than the work you do! Lindsay shares with us the her career path since high school. She talks about how she used to define success and feel valued. "Success used to really depend on my professional identity only. How useful I felt in the office and to my co-workers." Lindsay also shares how she always had a strong desire to go back to school to get her masters. She went back to school to work in the mental health field, something she thought she really wanted to do. She shares that after working in that field she realized it wasn't exactly what she wanted. Lindsay opens up about how she felt a bit embarrassed and bit like a failure because she had made this big proclamation that she was going to go back to school and working in mental health was going to be her thing. We dive deeper into Lindsay's history as she shares with us how her life was/is having lost her mother when she was only 13 months old. She talks about how this shaped and formed her from a young age. She also shares with us how her family home was destroyed by a fire the day before her senior year of high school. The few memories and mementos she had of her mother were lost and the the idea of being able to "go home" was no longer an option. "Life can be really hard, but we can create joy and connections anyway. But we have to be intentional about it."

This week we are joined by another one of our soul sisters, transformational leadership guru Lindsay Alive! Lindsay is a TedX speaker, a Huffington Post Blogger, and a mama of four amazing kids. In this episode, Lindsay shares with us how her biggest spiritual smackdown led her to the most expansive and exciting stage of her career. After achieving all of her perceived life goals, Lindsay was shocked to find that they did not bring her fulfillment. Empty and depleted, she followed her intuition and embarked on a month-long journey to Bali after making the painful decision to leave her children at home. Throughout this smackdown she wrestled with massive guilt and shame, but came out on the other side with infinitely more compassion for herself and for humanity as a whole. Learn what Lindsay means when she urges you to “listen to the whispers, or they're going to become screams”. Explore her ideas on unconditional love and compassion for both yourself and your fellow woman. And finally, feel connection with Lindsay as she explains how sisterhood is one of the core tenants of her personal growth. Here are Lindsay's practical tips for hearing the whispers of your soul: Listen to the things that excite you. You'll feel it as a flutter in your heart, butterflies, or that catch of breath when a new opportunity arises. Notice if you have fear that immediately arises. This is your ego trying to keep you safe. Develop the practice of asking for your needs to be met, and cultivate the ability to have a positive expectancy that they will be.
