Many of us walk into our menopause journey blindly—and it's not until things like out of the ordinary stress, ADHD-like symptoms when it comes to your ability to focus and concentrate, and seemingly overnight weight gain, that we scramble for control and often realize that our usual go-to tips and tricks don't work like they used to. While there's no one-size-fits-all solution, certain diet and exercise approaches can help greatly. In today's episode, we're bringing back a favorite guest—Jenna Braddock who is a registered dietitian and menopause expert. With her, we delve into the science of perimenopause and menopause and explore straightforward nutritional and lifestyle approaches, like how much protein do you need? How can you hit that target? What type of physical activity is the most effective to get rid of that belly fat? Best of all, since each of us is going through perimenopause, we share our personal experiences about what's worked for us—and what hasn't. This episode was developed in partnership with/in collaboration with the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, a contractor to the Beef Checkoff. And when you're trying to get to a destination, you can totally get there if you go at 20, or if you go at 30, or if you go at 40 mph right, you don't have to sprint.” - Andres Ayesta “Mindset is like a muscle and you have to work it out every single day and the more that you do, the more you start to actually create new pathways.” - Andres Ayesta“We point our light towards everything else and everybody else but ourselves. I think for people listening to this podcast, ask yourself the question, when was the last time you actually shined the light on you? And then you looked into yourself, and asked these questions about yourself. When was the last time the conversation happening inside your head was a positive one, and most likely you're gonna be like, it's been awhile.” - Andres Ayesta “If we don't change the way we think, it's hard to change the way we live and in order to change the way we eat we have to change the way we live; it's all connected." - Andres Ayesta“Understanding why is the missing link between knowing what to do and actually doing it.” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCES:Planos Nutrition WebsiteAndres Ayesta's InstagramAndres Ayesta's TikTok Andres Ayesta's FacebookAndres Ayesta's YouTubePodcast IG pageThe Nutrition Blueprint PodcastAtomic Habits by James ClearGUEST BIO:Andres Ayesta is a sports dietitian and the founder of Planos Nutrition, with over 12 years of experience helping people transform their nutrition and lifestyle. Favorite Quote: "That which doesn't kill us makes us stronger." — Nietzsche R.O.G. Takeaway Tips: All of us have something to improve. It could be our physical fitness, emotional wellbeing, mental health or spiritual direction, meaning clarify about the purpose of our lives. What's something you really want to change or improve? What is the reason you want to change it or improve it? Your homework this week is to choose one thing, then ask yourself the “five whys”. Drill down to find the heart of the matter. Once you get there, write it down. Set your goals based on your “why”, your truth and your purpose. Do the planning and preparation needed to set up for success. When we have tunnel vision, we often don't see the bigger picture. We're simply focused on the wrong things. Pratik Patel tells his story in this week's episode. As an unpopular, overweight Indian kid living in Kansas, he found a love for exercise and nutrition and started working with college sports teams, which eventually led him to professional sports, and now coaching anyone who wants help. Working with athletes on how to properly train and fuel their bodies taught Pratik so many lessons in life. He realized that he was ultimately focused and fixated on himself, putting an emphasis on winning, making him feel more important than he was, which led to him making many mistakes throughout his career. He was able to realize that his spiritual and value system had been faltering, that taking care of himself is important, and also see that the value comes from what impact you can make on others. Having a fixed mindset will keep you in a tunnel, but when you grow into an abundance mindset, you can truly live out your purpose. In this episode, you will learn: (1:55) Pratik's Background, Finding a Love of Nutrition and Exercise (13:00) Why Having a Fixed Mindset Can Lead You Down the Wrong Path (21:50) What It Looks Like to Have An Abundance Mindset (29:45) Where Tunnel Vision Leads and Learning to See the Bigger Picture (41:00) Life After Sports and Learning to Take Responsibility -- ABOUT PRATIK PATEL Pratik Patel is a Sports Dietitian, Strength and Conditioning Coach, speaker, consultant to sports teams, and 1-on-1 coach to athletes and non-athletes of all ages. For the past 20 years, he has studied nutrition, fitness, recovery, and the interplay between these and optimal health and performance. He has spent the past 11 years implementing his knowledge with elite athletes, most recently as an Assistant Coach with the New York Giants as the Director of Performance Nutrition and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach in charge of all things nutrition, hydration, supplementation, sleep, and recovery related to optimizing health and performance. During his career, Patel has worked with athletes from the NFL, Pro Bowlers, NBA, PGA, and USATF Olympians. Patel is a Registered Dietitian and Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) as well as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). -- This episode is brought to you by King's Council Coaching. In this episode, I talk with a world leading expert in sports nutrition and University of Kentucky professor, Dr Travis Thomas. We start by discussing some of Dr Thomas' academic and research highlights related to sports nutrition. While sports nutrition can be complicated, the most successful approaches are athlete-specific and individualized, which is why it's important to work 1-on-1 with a dietitian. Dr Thomas and I emphasize the importance of your daily diet over fancy supplements, pills and powders. The foundations of performance nutrition lie in day-to-day eating and drinking, followed by intentional fueling around workouts and competitions, and only then topped off with specific supplementation strategies. Dr Thomas and I discuss the latest research on hydration and the reliability of using urine color to assess this. Urine color is actually a valid tool we can all use to monitor hydration status daily: beware though, some foods, drinks and supplements may affect the color! We talk about different environments requiring different hydration guidelines before, during, and after exercise: however, the best approach is unique to the individual on the day. Despite being a world leading researcher in supplementation, Dr Thomas, like we do at Rise Up Nutrition, focuses on a food first approach, followed by optimizing stress levels and sleep to help athletes perform. He speaks to the importance of ensuring supplement safety and efficacy, before highlighting the four key evidence-based dietary aids: buffers like sodium bicarbonate and beta alanine, dietary nitrates, creatine, and caffeine. We differentiate between ergogenic aids and medical supplements like vitamin D and iron for those deficient, and debunk why more is not always better and can actually be harmful! We talk about affordable and accessible health and performance supplements like beetroot juice and green leafy vegetables. Sports nutrition is not just for Olympians, and Dr Thomas explains how we can all benefit from his research regardless of athleticism: similar approaches focused on elite sports nutrition can help all of us function optimally day-to-day, stay healthy and age gracefully! We explore this further with a deep dive into vitamin D, exercise and muscle function: vitamin D is not just for bone health! Whether you exercise indoors or out, maintaining optimal vitamin D levels deserves special attention. At Rise Up Nutrition, we use InsideTracker to help monitor our clients' blood biomarkers like vitamin D, iron and more. Follow Dr Thomas on Twitter@Dr_T_0926 Dr Thomas' Official Bio D. Travis Thomas, PhD, RDN, CSSD, LD, FAND, is an Associate Professor of Clinical & Sports Nutrition and Program Director of the graduate Clinical Nutrition program in the College of Health Sciences at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Thomas is a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD). He has held multiple volunteer and leadership positions with SCAN and served as lead author on the current Nutrition for Athletic Performance Position Stand endorsed by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, American College of Sports Medicine, and Dietitians of Canada. He was recently awarded the prestigious 2020 SCAN Achievement Award in Sports Nutrition, SCAN's first and highest award. Dr. Thomas has fourteen years' experience conducting human studies involving nutrition and exercise interventions across the lifespan. Over the past decade, Dr. Thomas has served as an investigator on several funded research projects that focused on a wide range of nutrition issues associated with the preservation and enhancement of skeletal muscle function and performance. These studies have focused on understanding the relationship between vitamin D and muscle metabolic function, nutrition and physical function in aging and athletic populations, nutrition interventions to improve endothelial function and to reduce symptoms in patients with advanced heart failure, and investigating nutritional strategies to preserve physical performance and lean body mass in patients with cancer. At the University of Kentucky, Dr. Thomas teaches advanced sports nutrition to graduate students and a novel undergraduate course titled “Nutrition for Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation.” Dr. Thomas also teaches and directs multiple clinical nutrition graduate courses and directs and undergraduate certificate called Nutrition for Human Performance. The market for dietary supplements to enhance sports performance has exploded in recent years. In fact, you may have tried some of these supplements yourself to improve your workouts. Many common supplements, like caffeine, have been studied in the context of immediate performance enhancement, and are used with that goal in mind. But the effect of chronic supplementation, particularly in endurance training, is not as well understood. Furthermore, it is not as clear how performance-enhancing supplements might influence the adaptive response to exercise training. Training-induced adaptations are the product of repeated stimuli from exercise sessions, as well as accumulated changes in gene expression, which gradually result in adaptive changes like greater muscle mass as well as more efficient muscle contractions. Dietary intake of certain substances can, in theory, affect training adaptations in a couple different ways. They can achieve this by simply increasing the exercise stimulus from a single training bout - basically just enabling an athlete to train longer or harder, or reducing perceived exertion. But they may also be able to affect gains in endurance by altering cellular responses to exercise-induced stress. For instance, supplements like buffering agents and antioxidants may modify the cellular signaling response to training by affecting acid-base balance, reactive oxygen species signaling, or redox status. Importantly, these changes in cell signaling may not be universally beneficial from the standpoint of adaptation. This raises a number of interesting questions. How significant is the impact of these supplements from a practical standpoint? And how do we separate acute effects on training duration and intensity from chronic effects on training adaptations? Is it possible that a supplement could simultaneously make it easier for an athlete to exercise hard, but also have effects on cellular signaling that actually have a long-term negative impact on the adaptive response to training? On this episode of humanOS Radio, Dan welcomes Jeff Rothschild to the show. Jeff is a Registered Dietitian with a Master's in Nutrition Science, and is a Board-Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD). He has worked with an impressive array of athletes - his clients include multiple Olympians, State Champions, collegiate All-Americans, and professional tennis players, as well as recreational athletes and folks who are trying to complete their first triathlon. Jeff recently wrote a fascinating review exploring the impact of dietary supplements on adaptations to endurance training. He came on the show to discuss his findings, and what they might mean for athletes and generally active people who want to maximize the time and effort that they dedicate to their training. To learn more about how various nutritional supplements might affect your training - both short and long term - check out the interview!
