We live in an age drowning in words but starving for meaning. The modern world treats speech as a tool for power, outrage, and self-promotion. Scripture presents something radically different: words as covenantal acts before the living God.The Perspectivalist Podcast exists to recover a distinctly Christian vision of language, culture, and public life. If Christ is Lord, then rhetoric is not merely technique; it is stewardship. The Christian task is not merely to win arguments, but to speak in ways that honor Christ, build neighbors, and cultivate a civilization shaped by truth, goodness, and beauty.Season Seven begins with a simple conviction: culture rises or falls on the words it loves. And therefore, Christians must learn to love words rightly.

In this episode of BaseCamp Live, host Davies Owens welcomes Chuck Evans - longtime leader in classical Christian education and co-author of Wisdom and Eloquence. Nearly 20 years after the book's original release, Chuck reflects on why he and Robert Littlejohn rewrote the new parent edition, and why the balance between protecting and preparing children matters more than ever.Chuck challenges the tendency toward “escapist” schooling, reminding parents that while protection has its place, our ultimate goal is preparation - raising wise, eloquent, Christ-centered young people who can engage culture with courage, persuasion, and hope. From the dangers of over-censorship to the importance of modeling faith at home, this conversation offers both inspiration and practical advice for families and educators alike.Tune in to hear:Why rhetoric—not coercion—is the cultural tool our kids need mostThe danger of turning schools into “protectatories” rather than preparatoriesHow parents model either fear or faith in everyday lifePractical encouragement for both parents and teachers on raising confident, persuasive disciplesResources Mentioned:Wisdom and Eloquence (Parent Edition) – Classical Academic PressSpecial Thanks to our partners who make BaseCamp Live possible:The Herzog FoundationZipCastWilson Hill AcademyLife Architects Coaching Stay tuned for more enlightening discussions on classical Christian education, and join us next time on BaseCamp Live! In this lecture, Dr. Mufti Abdur-Rahman ibn Yusuf Mangera explores the unparalleled eloquence of the Qur'an and its enduring impact on hearts, minds, and civilizations. He begins by introducing the concept of balāghah (eloquence) in the Arabic tradition, explaining how the Qur'an's language transcends ordinary speech, poetry, and prose. Unlike human expression, the Qur'an's style seamlessly combines clarity, depth, rhythm, and beauty in a way that captivates both experts in rhetoric and ordinary listeners. Dr. Mangera highlights how the Qur'an challenged the master poets and linguists of Arabia—renowned for their mastery of language—yet none were able to produce anything comparable. He illustrates this through examples of Qur'anic verses where a few words carry layers of meaning, evoke powerful imagery, and convey profound guidance. The lecture also emphasizes the Qur'an's timelessness: while human literature fades with changing tastes and eras, the Qur'an continues to resonate across languages and cultures. Its eloquence is not merely aesthetic; it is purposeful, moving hearts toward reflection, humility, and transformation. Concluding his talk, Dr. Mangera reminds the audience that the Qur'an's eloquence is one of its living miracles, a divine sign that invites believers and skeptics alike to engage with its words and witness for themselves the power of revelation. Why is political rhetoric broken – and how can it be fixed? Words on Fire: Eloquence and Its Conditions (Cambridge University Press, 2022) returns to the origins of rhetoric to recover the central place of eloquence in political thought. Eloquence, for the orators of classical antiquity, emerged from rhetorical relationships that exposed both speaker and audience to risk. Through close readings of Cicero – and his predecessors, rivals, and successors – political theorist and former speechwriter Rob Goodman tracks the development of this ideal, in which speech is both spontaneous and stylized, and in which the pursuit of eloquence mitigates political inequalities. He goes on to trace the fierce disputes over Ciceronian speech in the modern world through the work of such figures as Burke, Macaulay, Tocqueville, and Schmitt, explaining how rhetorical risk-sharing has broken down. Words on Fire offers a powerful critique of today's political language – and shows how the struggle over the meaning of eloquence has shaped our world. The book was the finalist for the C.B. Macpherson Prize from the Canadian Political Science Association. Rob Goodman is an Associate Professor of Politics and Public Administration at Toronto Metropolitan University. He was previously a postdoctoral researcher at McGill University and a Core Curriculum instructor at Columbia University. Before starting his doctoral research, he worked as a speechwriter for U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Honer and Senator Chris Dodd. Goodman has published widely in leading academic journals. He has also co-edited ‘Populism, Demagoguery, and Rhetoric in Historical Perspective' published by Oxford University Press, 2024. Send us a textIn this episode, I chat with Danielle Teller about how her creative journey defies conventional wisdom about career paths. From Yale-trained pulmonologist studying lung disease to acclaimed novelist, her story demonstrates how life's unexpected turns might lead us exactly where we're meant to be."I was a huge bookworm when I was a kid, but I was too chicken to actually write," Teller says. She explains how her fears centered on financial insecurity and feeling she lacked stories to tell, until a cross-country move disrupted her academic medical career and her husband encouraged her to pursue this long-held dream.Teller's latest novel, Forged, transports readers to America's Gilded Age through the story of Fanny, a desperate young woman navigating a Darwinian world of social stratification and ruthless capitalism. What makes this historical fiction particularly compelling is Teller's revelation that our current era mirrors that period of extreme wealth disparities and political corruption. "I think that my research reinforced my feeling that we are in a second Gilded Age," she explains, describing the disturbing parallels between past and present. Our conversation ventures beyond the novel to explore the publishing industry's subjective nature, including how finding the right agent resembles "matchmaking." Teller's unique perspective shapes characters who defy traditional female protagonist tropes, creating women who actively forge their own destinies despite societal constraints.Subscribe, leave a review, and share this episode to help more readers discover thought-provoking historical fiction that illuminates both past and present.Danielle TellerForged, Danielle TellerOrbital, Samantha HarveyThe Elements of Eloquence, Mark ForsythGoddess Complex, Sanjena SathianSupport the showThe Bookshop PodcastMandy Jackson-BeverlySocial Media Links

The raging waters of Rio Claro, in Colombia reminded recently of of the Amazon River. And currently, the river of life itself, which is as wild and unpredictable as the Amazon, has shown us, in the state of Texas which I call home, that the power of flowing water is as brutal as it is life-sustaining and necessary. Then, as promised, I take you back to Casablanca, in Morocco, and share the magnificence of the Hassan II Mosque. One of its most prevalent ornaments, Muqarnas, remind me of Victorias Amazonicas. Both images celebrate the symmetries and repetitive structures in nature, evoking the sacred mathematics so representative of Islamic art and architecture. Yet, even the majestic Hassan II Mosque has been affected by the passage of time and the elements.  Water, the memory of the dead fawn and the roar of nature's power aim to remind us all that everything in existence is a container and then a contributor to the all encompassing web of life.

How to Take Over the World The Ironies of Thomas Jefferson  A writer, not a speaker: Jefferson was a poor public speaker but turned it into a strength by becoming a master writer; his pen, not his voice, made him influential Lifelong self-improver: He rigorously tracked habits, avoided laziness, exercised daily, and studied constantly – living a disciplined, almost scientific life of self-bettermentJefferson was full of paradoxes: a slaveholder who opposed slavery, a small-government advocate who made massive federal decisions like the Louisiana Purchase.Impact beyond his presidency: He chose to be remembered not as president, but as the author of the Declaration, the religious freedom statute, and the founder of the University of VirginiaThis shows what he truly valued: ideas, liberty, and education Jefferson's Ten Rules for Life:1. Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.2. Never trouble another for what you can do yourself.3. Never spend your money before you have it.4. Never buy what you do not want, because it is cheap; it will be dear to you.5. Pride costs us more than hunger, thirst, and cold.6. We never repent of having eaten too little.7. Nothing is troublesome that we do willingly.8. How much pain have we cost ourselves by the evils which have never happened?9. Take things always by their smooth handle.10. When angry, count ten, before you speak; if very angry, a hundred.“It is a charming thing to be loved by everybody. And the way to obtain it is to never quarrel with anybody.” – Thomas Jefferson Read the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgHow did Thomas Jefferson overcome failure after failure to become the most significant politician of the early American Republic? In this preaching class Stuart Olyott shows that "preaching is not the most important thing" and that "being an example is much more important than preaching." Drawing on 1 Timothy 4:11, 1 Peter 5, and Ephesians 2:14–17, he explains why the "sort of life you live" must precede your words, why "little Jesus's" must speak from a heart-to-heart place, and how true preaching is "the exposition and application of the word of God." By focusing on character, conscience, and clear, Christ-centered illustration rather than mere lecture, Olyott equips pastors to leave their congregations "longing" rather than "loathing" at the close of a sermon.

Drawing on 1 Timothy 4:11, 1 Peter 5, and Ephesians 2:14–17, he explains why the "sort of life you live" must precede your words, why "little Jesus's" must speak from a heart-to-heart place, and how true preaching is "the exposition and application of the word of God." By focusing on character, conscience, and clear, Christ-centered illustration rather than mere lecture, Olyott equips pastors to leave their congregations "longing" rather than "loathing" at the close of a sermon.

The preacher must freely preach the word of God in a way that is natural, yet prepared. In this sermon titled “Illustrations, Eloquence, and Humour,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones addresses the preacher's need for freedom in the pulpit. On one hand, some preachers are bound to a manuscript and never make eye contact with his people. On the other, the preacher is unprepared and forgets what he intended to say. He argues for a well-prepared outline. Additionally, as the man prepares his sermon, he must consider the use of illustrations. Many preachers focus heavily on stories as their sermon becomes nothing more than an exegesis of their own illustrations. The illustration in a sermon must never be an end to itself. They must be used carefully and minimally, only to illustrate the truth of Scripture. Dr. Lloyd-Jones continues his lecture with thoughts on eloquence and humor. While the apostle Paul was eloquent, eloquence was never his goal. We should be wary of preachers who are more concerned with how something is said rather than what is said. The same applies to humor. A humorous individual will certainly, and naturally, use humor in the pulpit. But this should never become the goal in preaching.

Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.1 Corinthians 13:4-13GET MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING', THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI, AND THE FULL AUDIOBOOK!https://peacefulparenting.com/Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!Subscribers get 12 HOURS on the "Truth About the French Revolution," multiple interactive multi-lingual philosophy AIs trained on thousands of hours of my material - as well as AIs for Real-Time Relationships, Bitcoin, Peaceful Parenting, and Call-In Shows! You also receive private livestreams, HUNDREDS of exclusive premium shows, early release podcasts, the 22 Part History of Philosophers series and much more!See you soon!https://freedomain.locals.com/support/promo/UPB2025

How to communicate discontent, establish or maintain a boundary in real time:  Commit to communicating your boundary if you someone that usually says nothing  Ask yourself what this is triggering in you? How is this making you feel (e.g., taken advantage of, rejected, not respected or not valued, not good enough)  Inner Child Work: Speak to the little girl who is feeling hurt. Be present with her first. Regulate her nervous system through breath  Prepare to communicate at a faster rate than you ordinarily do (with in reason / context specific)  Don't be attached to the outcome. The Psalms are a collection of 150 Songs carefully placed inside 5 books of Psalms:  Book 1:1-41, Book 2:42-72, Book: 3:73-89, Book 4:90-106, Book 5:107-150.  The first three books are primarily lament Psalms.  Sadness, anger, and bewilderment are prayed out.  The final two books include two very angry Psalms, 109 and 137, but these books are dominated by Praise.  The final six Psalms thunder with the praise of the "I Am "God. The five books of Psalms are clearly intended as responsive speech to the five books of the Pentateuch, Genesis - Deuteronomy.  The Pentateuch is the story of "I am" calling Israel to be His crisis relief for the entire creation. The Psalms are prayed from the time of David, 1000 B.C., from inside the story the Hebrew scripture tells.  The Psalter was not collected into its current form until the 4th century B.C.  By then Israel had been in exile for two hundred years.  Yet the Israel of the 2nd Temple, 530 B.C. to 70, AD., is singing her faith in the rebuilt temple and those living outside Judea are singing inside synagogues throughout the Roman empire.  The Psalms were Jesus' prayer book and were prayed by the early church.  (Matt. 27:46, Col. 3:16, Eph. 5:19) We will pray and praise a representative collection of the Great Psalms of the Psalter -Psalms 1, 2, 3, 8, 16, 19, 22, 23, 42, 51, 73-74, 88-89, 90, 104-106, 109, 110, and 139.  We will pray out to the Lord God our emotions and struggles, but we will continue praying through from confusion, doubt, and anger to more clarity, trust, and peace.  We will be encouraged, rebuked, and discipled by the ancient Songs of Israel, Jesus, and our Church Fathers and Mothers. The "I Am," the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, will bless us as we draw near to God together.  Come join us on the Way.

Lucy continues to be silenced as we bring in Domonique Foxworth to discuss more headlines from around the NFL. We dive into the Pittsburgh Steelers-Washington Commanders game that caused a rift between Jess and Domonique's producer, Charlie. Domonique still doesn't believe in the Steelers as they barrel towards an epic matchup with the Baltimore Ravens next week. Plus, Patrick Mahomes looks slow as the Chiefs keep getting away with it, Domonique's Maryland Terrapins put a scare into the Oregon Ducks, and now, at this point, it seems like we're just purposefully avoiding the Miami Hurricanes result. Finally, we get to the Canes losing to Georgia Tech and dive deep into how this impacts Miami's season going forward. Is Cam Ward's Heisman campaign over? Did this loss actually hurt Miami that much? That defense is really bad, huh? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
