Crosswind's Envy a Trip to the Train Station, call name "Rip," is the Dog of the Year for the National Shoot to Retrieve Association and while he didn't have much to say, his owner and handler offer plenty of help to fellow hunters in this episode. I'll get the inside scoop from Sara Thorne, Rip's owner, and handler Brandon Ralston. Getting to a lofty pinnacle in the field trial world yields benefits for owner, handler and dog that translate directly to bird hunting and we'll explore that intersection. From training tricks to conditioning advice, diet, strategy in the bird field and trial course, Brandon and Sara will share the hard-won tips that put Rip at the top of the heap. We'll also answer the question: can a trial dog also be a bird hunter? "Handle It" is now "Fix It," and this week there's a shooting tip for you. Listeners share their Christmas wish list - and their dog's too. And we launch the 2025 edition of our Fur Feathers Friends tradition with some early prizes if you listen and enter with our Word of the Week. Prizes and entry information here. If you're like me, the um, standard of excellence you expect from your dog (and he from you) has devolved since opening day. That got me thinking: why can't we train our dogs during a hunt, or a hunting season? Well, you can. You may not do as much, or as frequently, but there are a ton of things you can do to help your dog stay on his "A" game during a hunt. I'll offer some suggestions. I'll also get a bunch of related observations and suggestions off my chest that might help you finish the hunting season on a high note. Simple stuff, things you haven't thought about for a while, or never knew. "Handle It" might help your dog avoid a broken toe; and we find out who does and doesn't wear eye and ear protection in the field. Talmage Smedly joins me for an in-depth conversation on why dogs do what they do and how we can guide them. He calls on his horse training experience as well as a different perspective on how e-collars and commands in general can be used. If you're looking for a new way of working with your dog, he's got it. We'll cover his views on how to use an e-collar, what instincts shape a young dog, using a leash and checkcord, and the advantages of "positive punishment," among other things. He'll help us fix some of our steadiness and retrieving problems too. Listener Keith Friel offers another reason to run two dogs together in the field, and "Handle It" is a plea for more leashes, tie-out stakes and crates. And it's all brought to you by: Sage & Braker Mercantile, LandTrust.com, HiVizSights.com, Pointer shotguns, @midwayusa, #midwayusa, MidwayUSA, Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, TrulockChokes, HiViz shooting systems, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com.
Tim Linehan guides forest grouse hunters ... in Montana. He's been an Orvis-endorsed outfitters for over 30 years chasing ruffies, duskies, blues, sooties ... or whatever they're calling the critters these days. He'll share strategies, including how to start a hunt; tactics when a dog points; shooting advice and habitat types for each species. We also share stories on the joys of bird hunting from good shots to young dogs, and the real reasons we hunt. Great tips from a couple listeners on dog emergencies and how to avoid them; "Handle It" covers a question from Neil Higgins of Minnesota on a young dog's steadiness. My former neighbor and current friend Tim Curry of Central Oregon Sporting Dog brings me up to speed on neighborhood news and a lot of practical advice on dog training and chukar hunting. From introducing gun fire, to introducing birds to a pup, what chukars really eat and where they go, to introducing an electronic training collar the right way, he's got things figured out. Tim also has some hard-won advice on getting a dog in the "Handle It" segment, and listeners offer tips on what to bring in your truck on a hunting trip. Yup, nothing wrong with stealing good ideas, especially when they were offered sincerely and will help others (i.e., YOU). Here are over two dozen suggestions from pro guides, pro trainers, field trialers and hunt testers plus good hunting buddies. Now, you won't have to learn the hard way - they already did! From dog training and handling to hunting strategies, here are bits and pieces to keep you and your dog more productive and your dog safer. Finding birds to finding public-access hunting areas, here are some lesser-known ways to make your hunt epic. "Handle It" covers a way to cool your dog, and your own photos of great hunting spots are shared. Beautiful! I hope it never happens to you - that eerie silence when you hoped to hear collar tags jingling, knowing your dog is well and truly lost. Or, he limps back, bleeding. As the season gets into full swing, what better than to prepare for each of these situations? I'll offer a four-step strategy for finding your dog, from preparation to gear, to starting your search. There may be something there that will help you, based on my own experiences over the years. Then, what's in my dog-care kit? I'll cover the stuff I carry in my vest that will help him continue to hunt, or stabilize him for a trip to the veterinarian. It's a simple, basic set of tools that'll take care of most in-field emergencies, from cactus spines to bee stings and barbed-wire cuts. "Handle It" is all about fueling your four-footed hunting buddy - what works for me and why (I think!). Maybe there's something in it for you and your dog. Champion target shooter and avid bird hunter Dave Fiedler of Mid-Valley Clays and Shooting School joins me for a wide-ranging and fun conversation about all things shotguns and wingshooting. From ballistics to buying a new shotgun, what we could do better in the field to the funnest target game, we've got the um, "field" covered. We also talk about the right gauge for the right bird at the right time of year, and the most important thing to do to your shotgun at the end of a hunt. In our "Handle It" segment I answer Eric Thompson's question about bringing on the next generation of hunters. You might be surprised at the 800-lb. gorilla in the room that I poke with a stick. I'm television's worst shotgunner. It's almost a badge of honor. The most frequent compliment I hear is “You shoot worse than I do!” I gladly own it. That's where these tips come in. They started as a sort of log – a journal – of things I've learned while hunting, at the range, and even dry-firing at home. Often, they were last-ditch efforts when everything else failed. Or, epiphanies from out of nowhere that saved the day. They're no substitute for a good course of study, a shooting lesson, or careful practice. But when nothing else works or you're ready to try a different way of looking at things, use one (or more) of these. "Handle It" this week answers Jim Smith's question on the vocabulary of a training collar's "other" functions, and listeners offer up less-common things they carry in their vest. And it's all brought to you by: Sage & Braker Mercantile, LandTrust.com, HiVizSights.com, Pointer shotguns, @midwayusa, #midwayusa, MidwayUSA, Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, TrulockChokes, HiViz shooting systems, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com. Down to brass tacks we go with writer, editor, publisher Jim Matthews. He's been helping desert hunters find publicly-accessible game birds since the nineties, and he'll dial us in to finding some of the spots, strategies and tactics we need for valley and Gambel's quail, chukars, and the occasional mountain quail. Jim will take us from habits to habitat, what to look for when scouting (we could all do more of this, he says), and where to look when a place is "shot out." Jim also keys us to his four-step bird-finding formula, how rain, snow, wind, cold and heat affect bird hunting, and suggests a couple pieces of gear most of us don't carry but should. "Handle It" helps Jon Schwedler slow down his setter and use her nose better; and listeners share the length of their hunting trips - see where you stand! In our continuing "Industry Insider" series, I talk with Larry Potterfield, who founded Midway USA on a wing and a prayer, selling shooting supplies to enthusiasts. He's grown the company into an international power player in most outdoors categories, and is overseeing a growth spurt that includes a new state of the art distribution center and headquarters building. We talk company history and philosophy, then go far afield to talk bespoke shotguns, quail hunting, youth shooting, conservation, shooting driven birds, safaris around the world, building a lake for kids' fishing, and how to buy a used shotgun. "Handle It" answers a listener question about who gets the retrieve: the shooter or the dog handler? He's probably trained or handled more NAVHDA Prize 1 Utility dogs than anyone at his Sharp Shooter's Kennel; Clyde Vetter is a dog trainer with a different way of thinking about his passion: creating elite hunting dogs. He's created a training philosophy used by many of his fans and followers that sometimes flies in the face of conventional wisdom. But as his email signature says, "Let Success Make The Noise," not self-promotion. His test records are his success. The noise comes from his legion of dedicated friends and customers. In a wide-ranging discussion, we cover the lure of prairie grouse, how to recruit more conservationists, how he uses training birds, and his unique way of training steadiness ... without "whoa." We cover retrieving as well, including why for some pups tug-of-war is a good thing. There's hunting advice, some unique items he carries in his vest (and why), and when you're done I guarantee you'll see dog training differently. Listeners share advice on introducing a new dog to your pack, and "Handle It" is a primer on hunting dog pad care from my personal experience. A lot of water under the bridge since we last talked: pandemic lockdown, a major restructuring of his organizations, and a new puppy. Ben Jones is CEO of the Ruffed Grouse Society and American Woodcock Society, and we've got a lot of ground to cover. We'll get an update on the new strategic direction and how it's affected the groups' operations and funding, jump into the groups' works on the ground and politically, and talk habitat, conservation and ... puppies. Ben has some tips for ruffed grouse and woodcock hunters, puppy training advice, and shares the most important items in his hunting vest, and listeners offer advice on hunting a brace of dogs in our "Handle It" segment. And it's all brought to you by: Sage & Braker Mercantile, LandTrust.com, HiVizSights.com, Pointer shotguns, @midwayusa, #midwayusa, Midway USA, Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, TrulockChokes, HiViz shooting systems, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com. She's had more than a year to get her footing and boy has she! Pheasants Forever/Quail Forever CEO Marilyn Vetter is guiding the 40-year old organization through a time of major strategic transitions and a new era of accountability and metrics-based policy. We talk about the group, its goals, measuring their progress and of course, dogs and hunting. An avid bird hunter and skilled dog trainer, Vetter covers a wide variety of topics from reintroducing wild birds to newly-rehabilitated habitat, to alliances that may not make sense ... until she explains them. Key aspects of the upcoming Farm Bill, including an effort to compensate grasslands owners for not plowing the ground are also on the table. Dog training suggestions, what she carries in her hunting vest, and more are all on the agenda. Listeners chime in with odd things they've found on their hunts, and "Handle It" caps off our retrieving series with last-ditch desperation moves to get the bird out of your dog's mouth and into your vest. Wild pheasants in Big Sky country ... with advice from a seasoned guide and friend, Al Gadoury of 6X Outfitters. Al will take us to school on ringnecks, along the way dispelling some myths about habitat and wild bird behavior. He'll also offer advice on the right way to employ blockers (not what you think), and his method for pairing a flushing dog with a pointing dog. We'll get dozens of tips on tactics and strategy, dog care too, and Al answers a listener question, too. Listeners share their thoughts on when to start a youngster, and "Handle It" focuses on reining in a big-running dog, with advice from me (and some much better qualified listeners!). Is cheatgrass really the magic potion for chukar hunters? Pro chukar guide Grant Richie addresses some long-held notions about this bucket-list bird, from habitat and feed, to proven tactics and strategies. Grant runs hunts in the legendary Hell's Canyon region, some of the most rugged chukar terrain in the U.S. He offers tips and advice on finding birds, handling dogs on the running devils, and shares some of the more unusual places he's found them. Grant also shares his love of the Cesky Fousek dog breed, offering insights on their hunting style and heritage. Four game bird species in a day, rescuing dogs from traps, running gnarly whitewater in pursuit of chukars? All in a day's work for this expert hunter and boatman. Find out how fellow hunters get in shape for hunting season (hint: "Pear" is NOT a shape), and in "Handle It" listeners offer tips on finishing the retrieve ... achieving a flawless delivery to hand. Jake Bartells re-joins us to share his hard-won wisdom on training dogs to the highest level. His bonafides include multiple NAVHDA Versatile Champions and a 12-year-old daughter who's learned enough to have her own dog entered in the Invitational Test this year. You want help with your dog's steadiness, well Jake's got a step-by-step tutorial you can take to the bank ... er, podium. We'll get a good start on retrieving too. The ideas, background and rationale may sound a little different from what you're used to, but the methods (instilled by his mentor, master trainer Clyde Vetter of Sharp Shooter's Kennel) work. "Handle It" address listener questions about do-it-yourself check cords: their assembly and why I love a certain kind of material. He's been through the wringer, but came out the other side stronger, more resilient and committed to the therapeutic value of hunting. Avid pheasant hunter and theologian Tony Jones outlines it all in his new book The God of Wild Places, and in this fascinating interview from the floor of Pheasant Fest. Starting late in life, Tony's outdoor journey began during a low point, and along with the love of a loyal dog he lifted himself from rock bottom to a point of grace. Spiritual, religious, or just plain grateful to be worshipping the great outdoors, you will learn something about the psychological and emotional payoffs of spending time in the field in this wide-ranging interview that also touches on practical matters including getting access to private ground, and better utilizing public land. "Handle It" offers a hack that might help your dog become a better retriever, and listeners debate the "best" clay target game for bird hunters. This guy, like many of us, has learned things the hard way so you don't have to. Keng Yang (@kengyang1) is a hardcore DIY hunter from Minnesota who inspired us at Pheasant Fest last year with ideas and tips on finding new public access hunting land. His personal experiences are lessons for all of us. From the floor of Pheasant Fest we talk dogs, hunting strategies, and devote considerable time to researching and accessing walk-in and publicly-owned ground. Listeners share their must-have dog gear, and the "Handle It" feature covers a little trick you can do with your training table to teach steadiness. Hunter, dog trainer, nutritional guru, magazine writer, an Upland National treasure ... Bob West of Purina joins me for a wide-ranging discussion full of reminiscences. Besides talking about his fellow legends, Bob's backstory might just prove he was the first "influencer" in our world ... back when TV was still made on magnetic tape and in 4:3 screen ratios! Bob is semi-retired but still a fixture at bird-dog events where you can bend his ear about fueling a hunting dog, training it, and hunting it. His insights, built on a foundation of trials and tests, are invaluable for anyone with a bird dog. We'll learn why trials and tests are a critical part of hunting-dog training, find out why sometimes giving up is the best strategy with a recalcitrant dog (at least temporarily), how important "wins" are on the training table, what the "three action introduction" is and why it's integral to a dog's performance in the field and at a hunting test. But there's more: pad care and what we miss, how a dog's G.I. tract is really affected by food during a hunt, the best reason yet for NOT feeding the morning of a hunt, and one man's opinion on whether or not dogs can "reason." "Handle It" covers some home-made training gear, and listeners laud their dog-training and hunting mentors. And it's all brought to you by: Sage & Braker Mercantile, LandTrust.com, HiVizSights.com, Pointer shotguns, @midwayusa, #midwayusa, Midway USA, Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, TrulockChokes, HiViz shooting systems, ESPAmerica, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com.
This week, we talk to industry insider Dan Compton, product director for The Kinetic Group's Remington, Hevi-Shot and Federal shotgun ammunition lines. He's a hunter so of course we'll talk about that, but we'll also find out what's new at each company, what's in development, and how shotshells work. We look at recent innovations in design, find out why copper plating helps your shooting accuracy, and learn how to take care of our ammo. We'll also learn how shotshell components affect ballistic performance, why some retired shotshell "recipes" are being pulled out of mothballs, and finally figure out who owns what in the dynamic ammunition industry. "Handle It" this week answers David Klopp's question about chasing wing-clipped birds, and listeners sound off on the lessons they wish they'd learned sooner. And it's all brought to you by: Sage & Braker Mercantile, LandTrust.com, HiVizSights.com, Pointer Shotguns, @midwayusa, #midwayusa, Midway USA, Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, TrulockChokes, HiViz shooting systems, ESPAmerica, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com.
Recent recipient of the NAVHDA Jim & Bobby Applegate Award for Outstanding Volunteer Contributions, Phil Swain joins us to provide insights, tips, and a bit of "dog-ology." He's a trainer, clinician, test judge, bird hunter and all-around good guy willing to help just about anyone with a bird dog. Among other things, we talk developing a steady dog, motivating dogs, introduction to birds, how much praise is enough, how to pass a hunting test, why two whistles are better than one. Phil's decades of practical experience has benefited generations of hunters and will pay off for you too. "Handle It" covers my opinion on what is the single most important training tool; listeners chime in on what a hunting partner should never do. And it's all brought to you by: Pointer Shotguns, Sage & Braker Mercantile, Pointer shotguns, LandTrust.com, HiVizSights.com, @midwayusa, #midwayusa, Midway USA, Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, TrulockChokes, HiViz shooting systems, ESPAmerica, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com.
Peak performance ... what we all want from our hunting dog. Karl Gunzer will help - he's director of the sporting dog group at Purina Pro Plan Sport, a dog trainer and hunter. He's as in-the-know as anyone I know about all things nutrition for canine athletes, from a theoretical and a practical basis. He's also hanging around with all the folks in white coats on Purina's research and development team, so current on the latest science. We're talking from the floor of the recent Pheasant Fest, where we also cover hunting dog foot care, strategic feeding, hydration, and dog training. Karl really piqued my interest when he suggested we let the dog "make the decision," rather than force it on him. I also asked you what the most important command is, in the field and your answers are surprising in their consistency, and "Handle It" this week offers my one-and-only tip on keeping a flushing dog within gun range. And it's all brought to you by: Sage & Braker Mercantile, LandTrust.com, HiVizSights.com, @midwayusa, #midwayusa, Midway USA, Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, TrulockChokes, HiViz shooting systems, ESPAmerica, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com.
In the yard and in the field, taking good care of your dog is critical to a successful hunt. After all, you probably go hunting to watch him work. So keeping him healthy is a high priority, and there's nobody better to help us than the "Gun Dog Doc," Joe Spoo, DVM. A hunter, elite athlete and veterinarian, Joe knows more than a bit about canine first aid and related topics. We'll explore the nooks and crannies of our dogs: up their noses, into their armpits, deep into lacerations, and poking into their eyes (not literally). Joe will dispel some myths about surgical staplers and rattlesnake vaccine, help us get our dogs back in the hunt with in-field first aid, and fuel him correctly for a full season of peak performance. We'll cover essential tools and supplies for your dog-care kit, too. "Handle It" answers a question from Ben Watters on dogs fighting over a retrieve; and listeners offer shotgunning tips. And it's all brought to you by: Pointer Shotguns, Sage & Braker Mercantile, Pointer shotguns, LandTrust.com, HiVizSights.com, @midwayusa, #midwayusa, Midway USA, Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, TrulockChokes, HiViz shooting systems, ESPAmerica, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com.
The "first couple" of bird dog training joins us from the floor of the 2024 Pheasant Fest: Ronnie Smith and Susanna Love cover all things puppy development, from mindset to introducing birds, getting pup ready for gunfire and introducing steadiness. They have some fascinating insights into how a dog thinks and how we should alter our own thinking as a result when training these "little domestic predators." Then, for older dogs, we talk retrieving, more steadiness work, and why they don't teach "sit." We'll get the reasoning behind whoa posts and flank collars, from these incredible trainers, hunting guides, and all-around wonderful people. The "Handle It" segment answers a question from Tim Wright on why his young dog was startled by birds - and what to do about it; and we total up the number of dog breeds we've hunted with over the years ... your count and mine! And it's all brought to you by: Sage & Braker Mercantile, LandTrust.com, HiVizSights.com, @midwayusa, #midwayusa, Midway USA, Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, TrulockChokes, HiViz shooting systems, ESPAmerica, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com.
Back to Pheasant Fest for an in-depth tutorial on everything from dog training to sharptail hunting from two guys who hunt hard and often: Trevor Walz and Tom Dombroski of LandTrust.com. For fun, to scout new properties, a little guiding, and to work a long string of dogs, these guys are on the ground all season and have a couple lifetimes of experience. We'll cover habitat, tactics, dog care and more. "Handle It" touches on the importance of collecting dead birds ... and listeners chime in on how important a limit is to them and why. And it's all brought to you by: Sage & Braker Mercantile, Pointer shotguns, LandTrust.com, HiVizSights.com, @midwayusa, #midwayusa, Midway USA, Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, TrulockChokes, HiViz shooting systems, ESPAmerica, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com.
What is the meaning of death? Gotcha! You thought I'd ask the meaning of life. Okay, we'll address both, within a hunting context, thanks to Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, one of three authors (with Linda K. Miller and Capt. Keith A. Cunningham) of the new book ON HUNTING ... A definitive study of the mind, body and ecology of the hunter in the modern world. A former U.S. Army Airborne Ranger, Dave's combat experience, experience training military and tactical teams, and as a hunter combine in this book that will make you think about why we do what we do. He and his writing team's take on hunting is comprehensive and thought-provoking, addressing why we hunt, how our dogs fit into the equation, and why hunting is perhaps more important in this "civilized" world than ever before. Ever think of yourself somewhere besides the top of the food chain? Dave explains why we aren't, and how it affects everything we do in the field, under pressure, and in life. Anti-hunter in the family? Vegetarian at your dinner table? Dave has suggestions on how to carry on a conversation with them as you take pride in your chosen passion. Listeners share their best hunt of the season and why it was spectacular, and the "Handle It" feature tips you to calming your dog for better training. And it's all brought to you by: Sage & Braker Mercantile, Pointer shotguns, LandTrust.com, HiVizSights.com, @midwayusa, #midwayusa, Midway USA, Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, TrulockChokes, HiViz shooting systems, ESPAmerica, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com.

From "Quail Alley" in Texas, Orvis 2023 Guide of the Year Jon Hubble enlightens us on quail hunting and habitat, tactics, and dog handling. Jon's Premier Wingshooting is in country that still looks - and hunts - like the old days, with oaks, native grasses and plenty of water. We'll also cover how to handle bad scenting conditions, why it's better not to shoot sometimes, and how he handles a cocker-pointer combination. Jon also gives us the definitive way to use inner-tube dog boots. We also peek in his vest for must-carry gear. Listeners share the strange and cool things they found on a hunt (not counting hunting partners), and "Handle It" may help you avoid a vet visit. And it's all brought to you by: Sage & Braker Mercantile, Pointer shotguns, LandTrust.com, @midwayusa, #midwayusa, Midway USA, Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, TrulockChokes, ESPAmerica,Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com.
Dr. Kelly Reyna is Director of the Ted and Donna Lyon Center for Gamebird Research and Principal Investigator of the Quail Research Laboratory at Texas A&M University-Commerce. He's a bit of an optimist, and conducting leading-edge research on "untaming" pen-raised birds, how wild birds really react to predators, and habitat ... including how cattle and quail can get along. Kelly is also an avid bird hunter so he looks at the practical as well as the academic challenges hunters face. His research dispels some notions that we've accepted as fact and helps us find more birds. From where to stand when you shoot, to what a dog actually smells when he scents a covey, to the best habitat for quail hunting, he's got suggestions. We'll explore bird behavior and where birds go when they flush, "weird quail" and how to hit more birds on the wing. "Handle It" covers training your dog for doctoring, and listeners share their shooting problems ... and some solutions. And it's all brought to you by: Sage & Braker Mercantile, Pointer shotguns, LandTrust.com, @midwayusa, #midwayusa, Midway USA, Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, TrulockChokes, HiViz shooting systems, ESPAmerica, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com.
Wild chukars, Huns, sharptails and sage grouse are Ryan's domain, roaming the uplands of Wyoming as an Orvis-endorsed hunting guide. He and his string of 10 dogs (setters, shorthairs and a springer) take clients into some of the roughest, most challenging terrain in the West, and he's got a few lessons for us. We cover the relative merits of setters versus shorthairs, learn about bird behavior, habitat, and he'll share his strategies and tactics for getting closer to birds. We'll talk conditioning dogs, training and pad care too. "Handle It" offers a new in-field energy supplement for dogs, and listeners share their own training goals for 2024. And it's all brought to you by: Sage & Braker Mercantile, Pointer shotguns, LandTrust.com, @midwayusa, #midwayusa, Midway USA, Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, TrulockChokes, ESPAmerica, ESPAmerica, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com.
I pulled together notes from all the places I've hunted in winter, polled good friends and reliable sources, to provide you with a list of publicly-accessible, wild-bird starting points for warmer hunting spots when you're tired of shoveling snow. There's nine different states, a multitude of new species (to most of us) and dozens of places to start your search for dry ground and shirt-sleeve hunting weather. "Handle It" address the backsliding dog who needs a reminder prior to a hunt, and listeners chime in on what has pleasantly surprised them so far this season, from habitat to hunting buddies. It's our somewhat-regular "Industry Insiders" edition, where I talk with leaders and up-and-comers about the business of bird hunting, their company, new products and tech. We also get their advice on taking care of our gear, our dogs, and ourselves. Oh, and these guys are also experts on bird hunting so expect some valuable tips. This week, Fred Bohm of Sage & Braker talks new gun care gear, field-care for our shotguns, and desert quail hunting. This guy lives in the hotbed, Southern Arizona, and earned his spurs by climbing the hills and battling the cholla cactus for elusive Mearns, Gambel's and scaled quail. Phil Francone is the president and founder of Meindl USA, bringing that legacy brand of boots to America. Phil helps us with everything from fitting boots and breaking them in, to care for this most important component of your hunting ensemble. He also spills the beans on a brand-new boot model. "Handle It" covers some helpful puppy-care stuff you may not have thought about, and you listeners weigh in with how your dogs are doing so far this season. As an alternative to the Dakotas, it offers a number of advantages, and I'll outline them via my own experiences hunting for fun and making TV shows.
