On this episode, we are joined by Susan Heinrich from Midlife Globetrotter. Susan is a Canadian writer living in Denver, Colorado. She is passionate about travel and supporting women in tourism. In 2020, she created Midlife Globetrotter, a website and platform that helps women over 40 follow their travel dreams to new places, with destination guides, practical tips and stories of her own adventures. Susan is passionate about reframing midlife as an opportunity, and explores themes of reinvention and self-discovery in her work. You can follow Susan on Instagramand Pinterest. In this episode, we talk about group tours and group tour operators, especially those that offer group trips just for women. To learn more, see Susan's blog posts about: Women's tours around the world: https://midlifeglobetrotter.com/womens-tours/ How to select a small group tour: https://midlifeglobetrotter.com/how-to-select-a-small-group-tour/ Croatia group tour with Adventure Women: https://midlifeglobetrotter.com/a-womens-sailing-trip-in-croatia/ Episode Highlights Some things to think about when choosing a group tour include: What is the pacing of the trip -- is there any free time, how often do you switch hotels? What is the group size? Small group tends to be under 14 people. Small groups have advantages in terms of the type of accommodation and the size of the tour group when exploring cities What is the activity level? Some companies like Adventure Women and Adventures in Good Company specialize in active trips and offer detailed explanations of the activity level involved in the trip If you are traveling solo, you can also look for tours that are only solo travelers When you are evaluating a group tour, be sure to read the itinerary in detail. You can also call the tour operator and see if they can give you any information on how many solo travelers there might be versus those traveling with a friend or relative. Also look at what the single supplement is. Some companies like Girls Guide to the World have private rooms by default but typically group tours are priced based on double occupancy and if you want your own room they charge a single supplement. Some companies will pair you with another solo travel as a roommate if they don't charge a single supplement. Be sure to read through the documents to understand what is included in terms of transfers and meals Understand who is guiding the trip -- is it a local or a U.S.-based guide Make sure you understand the cancellation policy and buy travel insurance If you aren't sure if a group trip is for you, opt for a private room, start with a shorter trip, feel free to opt out of activities, and maybe start with a trip in the U.S. that doesn't require a more expensive airfare. If you just want to relax or if you don't like having scheduled activities, then a group tour may not be a good fit Good tour operators for budget travelers include G Adventures (now have tours for women and certain age groups) and Intrepid Travel (who have women expeditions to places where you can meet and interact with locals in a way that you couldn't if there were men on the trip) For a luxury trip, Girls Guide to the World is a good fit and Insight Vacations is upscale and have women-only trips For nature and wildlife, Natural Habitat Adventures partner with the World Wildlife Federation and are known for wildlife trips and have women's only expeditions Adventure Women is one of the first companies to get into women only tours and typically offer four-star accommodations with active adventures Backroads is known for cycling and hiking tours and offers some just for women and they have trips that accommodate a variety of activity levels each day There are also group tour operators focused on certain destinations like Viking Women in Iceland Another themed tour is the British Book Club Tour: https://thebookclubtour.com Susan is also co-hosting an art-history based trip to Paris this spring Some women-only focused travel companies and others that have women-only trips Next Chapter Travel - small group, curated trips in Europe Next Tribe - over 45 women Gals Abroad Getaways - luxury Untethered Expeditions - adventure Adventure Women - small group adventure Adventures in Good Company - active Girls' Guide to the World - authentic, responsible (luxury) Sisterhood Travels - over 50 Country Walkers - walking/hiking Scout Escapes - mother daughter travel and group trips for women over 40 Viking Women - Iceland Explorer Chick - hiking and adventure in National Parks and abroad Insight Vacations - upscale group trips some women only Backroads - women only hiking and cycling Road Scholar - educational, some women only, over 50 Uniworld - women's cruises

Bassist, singer and songwriter Richard “RW” Grigsby, has logged several lifetimes on the road, and his early rock and roll roots (Rome, GA near the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains) burst out like another famous Richard from Georgia on “Road Scholar,” his story of a musician who has spent too much time on the road, working for too little pay. It's sung by Red's Blues drummer Tim Wilbur, a pro's pro (2017 Sacramento Music Awards and Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame member), who brought creative percussion ideas -- maracas AND the entire group thigh-slapping percussion. “We sat in chairs in a circle and slapped our thighs at certain points in the song to add accent,” laughs Beth. “Jackknifed” (co-authored with fellow road warrior Mark Hummel) continues the road theme with bio notes from their Golden State-Lone Star Blues Revue adventures. RW played with Carlene Carter, Gary Primich, Mike Morgan & The Crawl, Finger Taylor, Mark Hummel's Golden State Lone Star Revue w/Anson Funderburgh & Little Charlie, JamesCotton & all the Harmonica Blowouts since 2008-2019( Magic, Lee Oskar, Kim Wilson, Billy Boy, Jason Ricci, Carey Bell, Lazy Lester, Estrin, John Primer, Duke, Billy Flynn, Elvin, Gravenities, Ron Thompson, Harman, Rod Piazza & many others) 2014 Grammy-nominated and Blues Music Award (BMA) winner bassist RW Grigsby has been playing since he was 14 years old and began his professional career when still a teenager. He's toured the U.S., Canada and Europe since the '80s, and currently juggles playing with Red's Blues, Mark Hummel & the Blues Survivors and The Golden State/Lone Star Blues Revue. He played and recorded with Texas blues stars Gary Primich and Black Top Records' Mike Morgan and the Crawl in the 1990s. RW is the bassist on the 2014 Grammy-nominated and BMA-winning CD, Remembering Little Walter. He was nominated for a BMA “Best Bassist” Award in 2017 and was inducted into the Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame in 2018.

Harry R. Moody on 50 years in the field of aging and making the world a better place Harry “Rick” Moody, Ph.D., shares his opinions on positive aging, climate change, and the importance of finding meaning and purpose in later life. Gerontologist, professor, executive, speaker, writer, and activist, he is Distinguished Visiting Professor at Fielding Graduate University's Creativity and Wisdom Program and author of the hallmark textbook Aging: Concepts & Controversies, in its 10th edition. About Dr. Moody Harry R. Moody is a graduate of Yale University and received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Columbia University. He has taught philosophy at Columbia University, Hunter College, New York University, and the University of California at Santa Cruz. He recently retired as Vice President and Director of Academic Affairs for AARP in Washington, DC. He is currently Visiting Professor at Tohoku University in Japan, and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Fielding Graduate University's Creativity and Wisdom Program. Dr. Moody previously served as Executive Director of the Brookdale Center on Aging at Hunter College and Chairman of the Board of Elderhostel (now Road Scholar). Moody is the author of over 100 scholarly articles, as well as a number of books including: Abundance of Life: Human Development Policies for an Aging Society (Columbia University Press, 1988) and Ethics in an Aging Society (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1992). His most recent book, The Five Stages of the Soul, was published by Doubleday Anchor Books and has been translated into seven languages worldwide. He is the editor of the Climate Change in an Aging Society and Human Values in Aging newsletters. In 2011 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society on Aging and in 2008 he was named by Utne Reader Magazine as one of “50 Visionaries Who Are Changing Your World.” Key Takeaways Internalized ageism contributes to self-limiting beliefs, like: “I'm too old to play tennis anymore.” “I'm too old to learn to play an instrument,” You are never too old to learn. There are small things we can do for climate change that add up when you connect with other people doing small things. Begin where you are. Think globally, act locally. It is a false narrative to think you either act as an individual or act politically. You can and should do both because one reinforces the other. Positive aging begins by changing the way you think. Begin by believing there is always something you can do to make a difference in your own life and the lives of others. Aging is diminished reserve capacity. But that means reserve capacity. Decrement with compensation means recognizing there will be limitations and then finding an alternative (Ex: you can't run anymore, so you walk.) Look for opportunities, find them and act on them. Dreaming is a natural organic function of humans and all mammals. Dreams show us what we already know, but do not yet see. The young and old are the most vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation. Successful intergenerational connections require reciprocity and mentoring in both directions. So everything we do is about learning. But now our programs are more a mix of classroom learning and experiential learning. So not just lectures in a lecture hall, you're staying in a hotel room, you're not staying in a dorm anymore, which is nice. And so we've evolved into being more of an educational travel organization...When you travel with Road Scholar, you're really getting what you pay for and you're going to be there to learn. You're not there to sit on a beach and read a book or to go shopping. You're there to learn. And that's really what it comes down to. But we also offer financial aid. We offer caregiver grants for full-time, family caregivers. We have a scholarship for retired educators. So that's also part of our whole nonprofit thing." On Solo Travelers "30% of our travelers each year go solo. We have seen that trending upwards. We've seen more solo travelers in general over the past 10 years and 80% of those solo travelers are women. [We] see a mix of couples, solo travelers, friends who are traveling with other friends, siblings traveling together, parents with their adult children, also people who came as solo travelers on a pass trip and then they met somebody on a trip and then they went a trip together again. And I started to hear more anecdotally that there were a lot of married women who were traveling with us without their husbands. And I just thought that was really interesting. So I want[ed] to get down to some actual data on that. So I did a study and we looked at both data that we had in our system as well as doing a survey. And what we found was that at least 60% of our solo travelers are married people who travel without their spouse on World Scholar programs. I was really surprised by that. It was more than even I expected.
Kelsey Knoedler Perri can impersonate a princess or two, but writing is her one true love. As director of public relations for Road Scholar, Kelsey specializes in the mission of combining travel and education to provide experiences for older adults. Susan and Kelsey talk about the transformative power of travel and the power to transform travel for social good.
Episode Notes The U.S. Department of Transportation has hit Southwest Airlines with a $140 million fine over consumer-protection violations during last year's holiday travel meltdown, writes Airlines Reporter Meghna Maharishi. Maharishi reports the fine is 30 times larger than any previous DOT penalty for consumer-protection violations. The DOT said most of that money will go toward compensating future Southwest passengers for any disruptions. The department had concluded that Southwest didn't do enough to protect travelers during a massive winter storm that forced airlines to cancel thousands of flights. Next, destinations worldwide are increasingly waving visitor visa requirements. Associate Editor Rashaad Jorden delves into the impact of visa-free travel on tourism, using our artificial intelligence chatbot Ask Skift and additional reporting. Jorden writes that destinations view lifting visa requirements as part of their strategy to increase visitor numbers. Visa processing delays have been a significant obstacle to the industry's full recovery. Travel authorities in particular are looking to attract more visitors from India, with several nations having eliminated visa requirements for Indian travelers recently. Jorden cites China as one country that's received a major boost from a visa-free travel policy. China's foreign ministry recently said a policy that went into effect this month has helped increase tourism from the countries involved — including France, Germany and Italy. Finally, more older married women are embarking on trips without their spouses, writes Travel Experiences Reporter Selene Brophy. Brophy lists Boston-based tour operator Road Scholar — which specializes in educational group travel for older adults — as one company seeing a surge in married female guests traveling solo. Roughly 60% of Road Scholar's solo traveler customers in 2022 were married women traveling without their spouses. Road Scholar has said the boom reflects the emergence of Baby Boomer female travelers. Brophy notes that younger female travelers are also largely eager to travel solo. A StudentUniverse survey found that 58% of Gen Z female travelers are extremely interested in solo international travel.

Mark Twain said, "The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why."Purpose is your natural way of being and your purpose may change over your lifetime. It is not static. When we leave our careers many of us lose our sense of identity and then we lose our reason to get up in the morning.Anna Hall worked in senior living communities, and she saw how the residents that had a sense of purpose were more resilient, they were happier, had better mental health and motivation for each day. This sparked her research and the development of The Purpose Equation. The secret ingredient that fuels your innate purpose is tapping into your sense of joy. Anna has an experience that she takes you through called JoyFuel. We talk about what I discovered when I went through this experience with her.We also talked about the impact of understanding our individual purpose and joy, as well as understanding that of our partners or our co-workers improves relationships, increases patience and understanding.Episode Takeaways:Humans need a sense of meaning to thrive. How do you like to help people? Mary Ann and Patrick grew up with mothers who were sisters and fathers who were brothers. Mary Ann's family lived in upstate New York save for a 5 year stint in Texas and Patrick's family began in Nashville, Tennessee before migrating north to Finley, Ohio. The two families spent every Easter and two weeks in the summer together. Loving chaos would be the most apt phrase for these gatherings. Moving into their adult years, after Patrick returned home from serving in a M*A*S*H in Korea during the Vietnam War, he settled on the West Coast while Mary Ann remained in the Northeast. Respective focus on family and careers curved their paths in different directions until they arrived at the point of not having seen one another for 27 years. It was at this point that Mary Ann suggested to Patrick that they take a trip together to reconnect. Patrick enthusiastically agreed and a short time later they were greeting each other with loving embraces in the Calgary Airport before beginning a joyful reunion via a Road Scholar trip to the Canadian Rockies. Hear more about their trip and their many joyful reminiscences along the way on this week's show.Have comments or questions for us? Interested in sharing your story on Aging Well? Businesses are learning to cope with COVID as an ongoing part of life. But how will you business plans be impacted this summer? Today on MoneyWise, we'll talk about the impacts of the continued pandemic on your travel and lodging this summer. After grappling with two years of government restrictions and cancellations, the industry is projecting that travel and tourism this year will reach pre-pandemic levels and pump nearly $2 trillion into the U.S. economy. Governments here and abroad are lessening restrictions, and tourist-related businesses like airlines and hotels are learning to accommodate those that remain. SUMMER TRAVEL Let's start with air travel. You can expect to have more people flying this summer with a lot more destinations than the last two years. As for cost, rising inflation so far doesn't seem to be a factor. Right now, fares are actually about 18 percent lower than in 2019. If you're driving, the news isn't so good. Due largely to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the federal government's increased restrictions on domestic oil drilling, gas prices are expected to continue rising. GasBuddy is projecting that the national average price of gasoline will remain well above $4 per gallon through October. Even if you're not planning a long vacation drive this summer, you'll want to start using an app to find the cheapest gas in your area. GasBuddy, Waze, and GetUpside can help you do that. If you're planning on renting a car for your summer vacation, you'd better book it now. Rental cars have become incredibly scarce and prices are high. That's due to slowdowns in automotive manufacturing because of chip shortages. Kayak is reporting that the current national average for a rental car is around $66. That's nearly 30-percent higher than last year at this time, and 40-percent higher than before the pandemic. One-way rentals have all but disappeared as local rental branches are not about to let their cars drive away without returning. All of this has led more folks to turn to person to person rentals. You can check out car sharing sites like Turo and Kyte. They're cleaning up these days due to the car rental crunch. WHAT ABOUT LODGING? Once you get there, you'll need a hotel room. You'll want to book as early as possible. Availability won't be a problem, but pricing could be. CoStar is reporting that the national average price of a night's stay in a hotel is rising steadily and is now $144. EDUCATIONAL TRAVEL After two years of school closures and zoom classes, more parents are getting involved in their kids' education. The result is an increased demand for educational destinations. The site Road Scholar says enrollments for family-learning itineraries are on the rise. Destinations include options to learn about history, geography, and even a new language for international travelers. Prices start at $450 for children, $700 for adults. SETTING SAIL Our summer vacation tips wouldn't be complete without a word about cruises. Omicron has hit the cruise industry hard, but demand for cruises is bouncing back. Right now, the industry reports that about 75% of cruise ships are back in service and that's expected to increase to 100% by the end of the summer. Right now, the average cruise price is $215 per person per day, according to CruseHive.com. Thanksgiving: The Great American Holiday Presented by Penelope Bingham Nine out of ten Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving, and most do so around a family table. Food and tradition are the heart and soul of this most-loved, most-observed holiday. Thanksgiving has become the origin myth of America and the expression of deeply held American cultural ideals. As it considers the evolution of Thanksgiving, from the “First Thanksgiving” in 1621 to the present day, this program invites the audience to think about what this holiday and its food traditions mean for American culture and identity. Following lifelong passions for books and for cooking, Penelope Bingham began accumulating cookbooks over 40 years ago. Her personal collection of cookbooks now exceeds 2,000 volumes. She is particularly interested in the stories American cookbooks of the last two centuries about American culture and identity. She has given programs on American Cookbooks and Culture to libraries and cultural organizations throughout Illinois as a Road Scholar for the Illinois Humanities Council, as well as in conjunction with the Smithsonian's traveling exhibition, “Key Ingredients: America By Food”. She has also addressed the International Association of Culinary Professionals, the Culinary Historians of Chicago, The Wednesday Club of the Newberry Library of Chicago, the Cookware Manufacturers Association, and home economists of Kraft Foods. Her work with American Cookbooks and Culture was recently featured in Chicago Magazine and on WBBM/TV's “Table For Two”. Since 1990, she has been the volunteer “Cookbook Lady” for the Annual Book Fair of the Newberry Library of Chicago, preparing for sale the thousands of vintage cookbooks that are donated each year. Penelope holds degrees from Wellesley College and the University of Chicago. She is a member of the Culinary Historians of Chicago and the International Association of Culinary Professionals. Aging Adventurously through travel is what this episode is about. I spoke with Road Scholar Director of PR, Kelsey Perri and solo traveler and lifestyle blogger, Barbara Winard. Road Scholar is a not-for-profit educational travel organization that had to make some serious adjustments when the pandemic shut down travel. We talked about how they survived and some of the history of the organization from its beginnings as Elderhostel to what it has become as Road Scholar. We talk about the adventures, risks and delights of being a solo traveler, both with a tour and on your own. Finding people who are curious about learning, experiencing new cultures and activities and possibly developing new friendships. The deliberate exclusion of Black history and the history of slavery in the Amerian South has been slow to reverse. But Jazz Dottin, creator and host of the Black Gems Unearthed YouTube channel says it can be just as slow in New England. Each video features Dottin somewhere in her home state of Massachusetts, often in front of a plaque or historical marker, presenting what's missing, excluded, or downplayed. The history discussed on Black Gems Unearthed has been left out by conventional museums, which are among the most trustworthy institutions in modern American life, according to the American Alliance of Museums. This trust may have more to do with power than truth-telling — and today, there are many different ways to build trust with an audience online. Shows like Dottin's might point to where our new relationship with the authoritative voice is heading. In this episode, Dottin describes how working as tour guide and creating travel itineraries influences her work today, how she came up with the idea for Black Gems Unearthed, and what the future holds. 每日英語跟讀 Ep.K132: Taking Trips That Mean Something Carol Sullivan awoke recently in Cuenca, Ecuador, excited for the day ahead. She was in the second week of her study abroad experience, and after Spanish class, she and her fellow students were going to the local market to buy dinner ingredients and practice their new language skills.“The local women may be aghast at how little we know but are very willing to let us try,” Sullivan said. She and her husband, Terry, who is also her classmate, are in their early 70s.The Sullivans are part of a trend among adult travelers, who show a growing interest in going to class, volunteering or working abroad as part of their experience. Older travelers often want to continue to learn and have an impact on the world, said Andrew Gordon, who founded the company Diversity Abroad 12 years ago. “They want their travel to have meaning,” he said. Gordon's company connects and does advocacy work for nontraditional students who want to study overseas.Road Scholar, which organized the Sullivans' program, began as an organization offering not-for-credit classes on university campuses for adults age 60 and over. Now it offers what it calls educational travel adventures worldwide. Travelers may focus on a particular ecosystem they are visiting, attend class on a college campus or, in a twist on the Semester at Sea concept, spend 115 days on an ocean liner circling the globe with experts delving into destinations' histories and cultures. All adults are welcomed, but the audience typically skews older and the average age of a “road scholar” is 70. The organization is a nonprofit and offers family caregiver grants and other scholarships.JoAnn Bell, the senior vice president of program development at Road Scholar, said that adults studying abroad, like their college-age counterparts, value the time in a foreign country's culture as much or more than academic instruction.“We had seen a decline in enrollment for programs heavily weighted to classroom time,” Bell said. “People want to get out and experience the country for themselves.” Stopping for a croissant and chatting with the neighborhood cafe owner every morning on the way to class was just as important as the class, she said. Source article: https://paper.udn.com/udnpaper/POH0067/326673/web/ Sure? 15minstoday@gmail.com

It's vital that the networks stay fluid. When a clog in the pipes appears, bad things tend to happen. So you need to be prepared for when the supply chain gets messy. Additionally, insurance and the surge of "nuclear" verdicts spells higher premium, higher requirements, and ultimately… more cost being injected into the Transportation Logistics Industry. From the famed Marienplatz tothe Royal Residence, this group of U.S. tourists visited Munich’s highlights. They’re traveling with Road Scholar, a non-profit organization that imparts education through travel.
Host Bob Leins, CPA® and co-host Maureen Wilkin, Federal Benefits Specialist, NITP, welcome Stacie Fasola, Senior Director of Public and Media Relations for Road Scholar, and Kelly Espy, Road Scholar Ambassador.
Fresh off an exciting family road trip, I share some observations about small town claims-to-fame and my wife's desire to visit every historic marker plaque along the way.
This recording was made at the beginning of a 2017 tour of Israel. The tour was titled, “The Land of Israel: Past, Present and Future.” The tour was operated by an Israeli tour company for Road Scholar, an American company that operates international tours. The speak was Dr. Gabi Barkay, an Israeli archeologist, an external lecturer at an Israeli university who has frequently appeared on the History Channel show the Naked Archeologist. He established the “Temple Mount Antiquities Salvage Operation,” that recovered significant ancient artifacts from 400 truckloads of earth removed from the Temple Mount from 1996 to 2001. He has participated in many other important discoveries. In this lecture, he explains why Jerusalem is such an important Israeli city. You’ll find Barkay views quite enlightening. His humor is delightful.
While in Israel I heard a member of the Kibbutz Asdot Ya’ako Ichod tell us about being a Kibbutz nick. My travel group, Road Scholar, heard him speak while we stayed at a hotel owned by the Kibbutz. The hotel, Nos Ginossar, is located beside the Sea of Galilee. This recording will provide listeners with some insight into the modern Israeli Kibbutz movement. The speaker is Yonatan (Johnathan) Alter. He is the Secretary of the Kibbutz’s Secretariat. You would consider him to be the mayor. Johnathan was born in the Kibbutz, so he is a second-generation Kibbutz nick who is raising the third generation. Lifestyles and choices are much different than the when he was born. Times have been much bleaker, even to the point of Kibbutz’s declaring bankruptcy. But, times are much better, Kibbutz membership is on the rise.
