Do you ever get a flash of a memory of a movie you saw as a child, but can’t remember the name? Perhaps you caught it on TV while staying up later than you should have. Or maybe you never saw it, but you recognize the cover art from the neighborhood video store around the block. At the Video Junkyard, we dig up these forgotten films and franchises and see if they still hold up in the digital age. Hosts Erik Gulbrandsen, Joe Peterson and Ryan Steiskal will look at the best, the worst, and the best of the worst.
This episode is a little different. This is the first of our commentary-style feature-length episodes that allow you to watch along as we chat about the movie in real-time. For our first attempt, we picked an old favorite: Labyrinth (1985). This Jim Henson project is perhaps remembered best for David Bowie's [performance] as the Goblin King but let's see how this one plays in 2025. Is it still the all-time classic we remember it to be? Join in the conversation by sending your feedback to videojunkyardpodcast@gmail.com. Your feedback on the format of this show would also be greatly appreciated as we will consider doing more of these in the future. fm2tufvs
This time on the Video Junkyard Podcast we say "down with the mainstream" and watch "Cecil B. Demented". This 2000 John Waters movie takes down mainstream cinema and we're here for it. Join in on the discussion by sending your feedback or comments to videojunkyardpodcast@gmail.com. Stay tuned for more regular episodes in 2025—happy New Year to all of you junkyard denizens who have joined us on this wild ride. We have lots of great stuff coming soon.
Happy Halloween from all of us here in the Video Junkyard. This show is going to end up being our Halloween episode this year. It was recorded in April but I think it timed out perfectly as this one has many Halloween vibes if you've never seen The Lords of Salem (2013) d. Rob Zombie I think you may be pleasantly surprised. And if you have let us know what you think about it by sending feedback to videojunkyardpodcast@gmail.com.
Join us in the Junkyard as we get a little weepy of 1985's Mask. This one features a powerhouse performance by Cher that proves that she's not messing around regarding her acting career. Have you seen Mask? Join in the conversation by sending us feedback at videojunkyardpodcast@gmail.com. We'd love to hear from you.
Welcome back to the Video Junkyard. This one's been coming for a long time. All three of us are long-time Godzilla fans (we've reviewed some other films in the franchise so be sure to check out those episodes as well) but we have some very differing opinions on "Godzilla" (1998). Join the conversation and share your thoughts about this (videojunkyardpodcast@gmail.com). Trash or treasure?
This time we have an audience pick that's sat on the list for quite a while. Being fans of the writer Robert E. Howard, it's odd that none of the Junkyard boys had seen this one before. So here's our take on the first viewing of this romantic biopic "The Whole Wide World". In this fact-based film set in 1930s Texas, pulp fiction master Robert E. Howard (Vincent D'Onofrio) is introduced to Novalyne Price (Renée Zellweger), a teacher with aspirations of becoming an author herself, and they begin a unique relationship filled with conversation and imagination. Although the possibility exists for romance, Howard's obsession with his work and dedication to his sick mother (Ann Wedgeworth) leads Price to look elsewhere for love, leaving Howard feeling betrayed and alone.
For those who have had the viewing "pleasure" of Tiptoes (2003), you knew we'd eventually be reviewing this one. It truly has to be seen to be believed but maybe you're better off just taking our word for it. Either way, this episode is bound to be a better experience than actually watching Tiptoes, so we have that going for us. Carol falls in love with Steven without knowing much about him. When Carol finds herself pregnant it forces Steven to expose a secret. Steven happens to be the only average-sized person in a family of dwarfs, including his twin brother Rolfe.
We're slowly catching up. This week we present a movie that was more relevant when we recorded it in the dead of winter... but maybe it'll help cool you off this summer. It's 30 Days of Night (2007): In the far Northern Hemisphere, the small town of Barrow, Alaska, experiences a solid month of darkness every year. Though most of the residents head south for the winter, some townspeople remain behind. However, those that stay regret their decision when, one year, hungry vampires descend on Barrow to feed. Sheriff Eben (Josh Hartnett), his wife (Melissa George) and a dwindling band of survivors must try to last until dawn breaks over Barrow's monthlong twilight.
One good turn deserves another. This week we review the sequel to the mighty RoboCop (1987), the sequentially titled RoboCop 2 (1990). Cyborg Detroit policeman Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) is the sole officer on duty after the police force goes on strike against evil conglomerate Omni Consumer Products and its push to foreclose on the city of Detroit. Aside from dealing with the normal level of crime, Murphy must take on crime boss Cain (Tom Noonan), the spread of a dangerous new drug called "Nuke" and the attempt by psychologist Dr. Juliette Faxx (Belinda Bauer) to create another Robocop using a hardened criminal.
This week we finally get to one of our favorite cult classics... RoboCop (1987). In a violent, near-apocalyptic Detroit, evil corporation Omni Consumer Products wins a contract from the city government to privatize the police force. To test their crime-eradicating cyborgs, the company leads street cop Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) into an armed confrontation with crime lord Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith) so they can use his body to support their untested RoboCop prototype. But when RoboCop learns of the company's nefarious plans, he turns on his masters.
This week one of our esteemed audience members picked the gritty sci-fi classic "Outland" (1981) starring the only Sean Connery. This "space western" has been on our watchlist for quite a while, and we're happy to cross it off. Will we be recommending you track down a copy? Listen and find out this week in the Video Junkyard.
This week it's the 2002 adaptation of Brett Easton Ellis's novel "Rules of Attraction". This one is one that Joe and Erik remember liking way back when it was new but it's a first watch for Ryan. Was this a good recommendation or is it a stinker? Rules of Attraction (2002) d. Roger Avary Sean Bateman is a freshman at Camden College, who's in love with Lauren Hyde. She's waiting for her wastrel boyfriend Victor Johnson to come back from a trip around Europe, while Paul Denton, who used to date Lauren, is exploring his bisexual side with a crush on Sean.
It's the Return of the Video Junkyard Podcast... and we're reviewing the Return of everyone's favorite carnivorous fruit. It's Return of the Killer Tomatoes starring John Astin and some no-name TV actor called George Clooney. I'm sure we'll never hear of that guy again. The insane Dr. Gangrene develops a new strain of violent vegetable in this sequel to the 1977 cult classic.
This time on the Video Junkyard Podcast it's... The Company of Wolves (1984). Wolves and werewolves lurk throughout the dreams of young Rosaleen (Sarah Patterson), who imagines that she must journey through a dark forest to live with her grandmother (Angela Lansbury). When Rosaleen meets a rugged hunter in the woods, she discovers that she has an animal-like attraction to him, leading to a macabre turn of events. The lupine-centric film also features stories within the main tale, told by both Rosaleen and her grandma, all of which have a supernatural bent.
Adventures from deep space to futuristic New York, and beyond. Each world and story is dominated by the presence of the Loch'nar -- the sum of all evils manifest as a glowing green sphere whose power infects all times, all galaxies, all dimensions. To some, it appears as treasure, a green jewel they must possess. Others worship it as a god. Few escape it. Even in death and through death its powers continue. From war to war and world to world it seems invincible. Join the conversation! This week on the Video Junkyard Podcast, we take a look at the 1988 supernatural thriller "The Serpent and the Rainbow" directed by Wed Craven. Starring Bill Pullman, Cathy Tyson, Zakes Mokae, and Paul Winfield, the film tells the (supposedly based on a) true story of an anthropologist's exploration into the supernatural and corrupt underworld of Hatia's "voodoo" practices in hopes of producing live-saving medicines. While most know of Wes Craven for his Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream franchises, this entry is a little different than many other Craven pieces. Check out the latest episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast to find out if "Serpent and the Rainbow" still has any life, or if it should stay in the graveyard.
On this episode of the Video Junkyard Pocast, we continue our deep dive into 70s-80s "grown-up-oriented" animated music films (it's apparently a thing). This week we take a look at the 1983 film "Rock & Rule". Directed by Clive A. Smith, R&R is a futuristic sci-fi/fantasy story of evil mega-popstar "Mok" who manipulates an up-and-coming rock band to unleash a demonic force that will catapult him to world domination. But the music by Deborah Harry, Earth, Wind & Fire, Cheap Trick, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, and the score by Patricia Cullen is the real selling point. So how does Rock & Rule hold up after all these years? Los Angeles teenager Ritchie Valens (Lou Diamond Phillips) becomes an overnight rock 'n' roll success in 1958, thanks to a love ballad called "Donna" that he wrote for his girlfriend (Danielle von Zerneck) whose parents didn't want her to date a Latino boy. But as his star rises, Valens has conflicts with his jealous brother, Bob (Esai Morales), and becomes haunted by a recurring nightmare of a plane crash just as he begins his first national tour alongside Buddy Holly (Marshall Crenshaw). On this special episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast, we invite our special guest - Dr. Joe Frederickson of the Weis Earth Science Museum - to discuss the 1997 horror thriller "The Relic"! Based on the popular book by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, "The Relic" involves a series of brutal slayings in a natural history museum with evidence that the killer may not be human! The Relic stars Tom Sizemore, Penelope Ann Miller, and Linda Hunt, and is directed by Peter Hyams. Does this museum monster movie make the cut, or is this relic just junk? Check out the latest episode to find out!
A creepy old house, a family stranded, an old toymaker, and his killer dolls, sprinkle this mixture with a little fairy tale magic and you get the 1987 Stuart Gordan/Charles Band horror film "Dolls". This week we skim the bargain bin and find one we've never even heard of before. How does a film like this fly under our radar? It features two of our favorite actors (Nicolas Cage and Willem Dafoe) and was directed by critically acclaimed writer/director Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull). That must mean this one is really a stinker, right? Well, we don't want to spoil the show, you'll have to tune in and find out what we thought of the 2016 crime thriller "Dog Eat Dog". On this episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast, we take a look at the 1995 American comedy/detective film "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls". Jim Carrey reprises his role as the titular pet detective (we tried to avoid the first one for...reasons), this time venturing (get it?) to Africa to recover a stolen albino bat in an effort to stop two tribes from going to war with one another. While the first Ace Ventura film has NOT aged well, how does the sequel stand? Check out the episode to find out! Take care now, bye bye then...
Welcome back to the Junkyard. We're back from an impromptu summer break with the 80s Aussie classic "Crocodile Dundee." Comedian Paul Hogan stars as the titular Dundee in this rom-com from down under. He also wrote the script. Happy 4th of July to all of our favorite Junkyard Junkies! This week we're celebrating by re-visiting Joe Dante's darkly comic fantasy film Small Soldiers! This time we follow up on our "A Fish Called Wanda" episode by taking a look at its spiritual sequel "Fierce Creatures" (1997). This time we take off to deep space to check out the sci-fi/horror monster movie "Pitch Black." On this episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast, the guys dive into an 80s comedy classic with "A Fish Called Wanda". Directed by Charles Crichton and featuring John Cleese, Michael Palin, Kevin Kline, and Jamie Lee Curtis, "A Fish Called Wanda" tells of a gang of diamond thieves who double-cross one another to find stolen diamonds hidden by the gang leader. When a barrister (Cleese) becomes a central figure, femme fatale Wanda (Curtis)uses him to locate the loot and keep them out of jail. The pairing of Monty Python alumni with Kline and Curtis brought in rave reviews when the film was released in 1988, but does it still make a splash in 2023? Check out the Video Junkyard Podcast to find out!

At last, it's the movie we all wished for, "Kazaam", starring everybody's favorite gentle giant, NBA/hip-hop star Shaquille O'Neal as an ancient Genie. Noto to be confused with the non-existent "Mandela effect" movie "Shazaam!" starring Sinbad, which is... not real, at least in this dimension. A genie named Kazaam (Shaquille O'Neal) has been sealed up for thousands of years, until one day he is accidentally freed by Max (Francis Capra), who is on the run from a local gang. Kazaam explains to the youth that he belongs to Max until he grants three wishes, but what Max really wants is to get to know his estranged father. When the genie, who considers trying his hand at a music career, forgets about his young master, Max is attacked by villainous club owner Malik (Marshall Manesh). Join the conversation! On this howlingly entertaining episode, the Video Junkyard Podcast checks out the 1985 teen comedy "Teen Wolf". Directed by Rod Daniel, written by Jeph Loeb and Matthew Weisman, and staring Michael J. Fox, James Hampton, Jerry Levine, Susan Ursitti, and Lori Griffin, "Teen Wolf" tells of an ordinary high school student (Fox) who discovers that his family has an unusual pedigree when he finds himself turning into a werewolf. And of course according to legend, this makes him incredibly popular and great at basketball. The film has been the base and inspiration for a 1987 sequel, a short-lived Saturday morning cartoon, and a popular teen/adult drama series in 2011-2017. But how is the original in retrospect? Check out the latest episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast to find out!
This week we leave the comfy confines of the junkyard on a road trip to Dunwich, otherwise known as Lucio Fulci's "City of the Living Dead" (AKA The Seven Gates of Hell). This 1980 horror film pits Fulci regular Catriona MacColl against an army of the walking dead, or something like that. Honestly, we're not sure, but it's a hell of a ride. A newsman (Christopher George) and a prematurely buried woman (Katriona McColl) confront the living dead in Massachusetts. Join the conversation! Get your interstellar rigs ready to ride because this week, we're watching "Spaces Truckers." Stuart Gordon directs this 1996 sci-fi adventure starring the late Dennis Hopper, Stephen Dorff, Debi Mazar, and Charles Dance. With killer robots designed by the one and only Screaming Mad George, this is a forgotten movie that shoots for the stars, but does it end up crashing back down to earth? On this week's episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast, we take a look at the 1986 science fiction film "Solarbabies". Directed by Alan Johnson and (shocklingly) co-produced by Mel Brooks, "Solarbabies" stars Richard Jordan, Jami Gertz, Jason Patric, Lukas Haas, and Charles Durning and tells a tale of a post-aocalyptic future ruled by the military where a group of renegade teenage orphans find a legendary orb (named Bohdai) that can supposedly bring the rain back to dried up Earth. When it was first released, Solarbabies was received poorly by critics due to its confusing plot and derivative sci-fi elements. So how does it hold up in 2023? Check out the latest episode to find out!
It's our semi-annual annual Razzies Special! This year we're watching the one that went on to win... Andrew Dominick's Marilyn Monroe biopic "Blonde." This controversial film was awarded the Golden Rasberry award for the WORST film of 2022. On this episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast, we revisit Perfection to take a look at the 1990 comedy/horror movie "Tremors". In this popular thriller franchise starter (directed by Ron Underwood and starring Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Finn Carter, Michael Gross, and Riba McEntire), the locals of a small southwestern town discover giant monstrous worm-like creatures (dubbed "graboids") rooting through the ground beneath their feet...and they are hungry! While "Tremors" wasn't a huge hit in the theaters, it spawned a seven-film (direct-to-video) franchise and a short-lived series. So how does the first film hold up? Check out "Tremors" on TubiTV and then join us for the discussion on the Video Junkyard Podcast!
This time the Junkyard gang is off on the adventure of a lifetime... vicariously, of course. We are living the adventures of Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas in 1984's "Romancing the Stone." Robert Zemeckis directed this classic romantic adventure that sees the stars off to South America on the hunt for a lost jewel of immense value. Joe and Ryan were both newbies to this one. Let's see if they think this treasure is worth unearthing or if we should give that map to Danny Devito and get on our way. A dowdy romantic-adventure writer is hurled into a real-life adventure in the Colombian jungle in order to save her sister, who will be killed if a treasure map is not delivered to her captors. She is helped out by a brash mercenary, and together they search for the priceless gem located on the map. Join the conversation! On the latest episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast, the guys to space! Ok...so we've been doing a lot of that lately. But this time it's with 1980's "Battle Beyond the Stars" directed by Jimmy T. Murakami and Roger Corman. Starring Richard Thomas, Robert Vaughn, John Saxon, George Peppard, and Sybil Danning, this space opera latches on to the heels of some other popular sci-fi epic that came out just a few years earlier, but also borrows heavily on a different Kurosawa film (this time it's "Seven Samurai"). With a star-studded cast and a unique production design, how does "Battle Beyond the Stars" hold up? Check out the latest episode to find out(and also check out our Patreon)!
In this episode, the Junkyard crew rides on an interstellar spacecraft back to the year 1986 and the Disney family Sci-Fi film "The Flight of the Navigator." Whether this is a beloved classic from your youth or never seen a relic of the 1980s, come along and see if we can find any reason to give this one a (re)watch or if we should send it back to its own timeline in 1986 where it belongs. "This 1978 Disney adventure tells the story of 12-year-old David (Joey Cramer), who lives with his family in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. When he awakens from being accidentally knocked out in the forest near his home, he finds that eight years have passed. His family is overjoyed to have him back but just as perplexed as he is by the fact that he hasn't aged. When a NASA scientist (Howard Hesseman) discovers a UFO nearby, David can unravel the mystery and recover the life he lost." Join the conversation! On this episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast, Erik and Joe take a look at the 2005 film "Lord of War" staring Nicolas Cage, Jared Leto, Bridget Moynahan, Ian Holm, and Ethan Hawke. Written and directed by Andrew Niccol, "Lord of War" is a semi-true story of one of the world's most infamous arms dealers in the 1980s through early 2000s. While Cage's character of Yuri Olav is fictional, the character - and many characters in the film - are based on real individuals (Olav is based on real-life "Merchant of Death" Viktor Bout). An interesting, and sadly still topical film and a unique role for Cage in this particular time in his career, but does Lord of War still hold up in 2023? Check out the Video Junkyard Podcast to find out!
Well, it doesn't take place in 2023 as meme culture would have you believe, but that doesn't mean that "Zardoz" isn't one of the craziest sci-fi movies ever. Welcome back to the Junkyard. It's 2023, and we're visiting the 23rd century where Sean Connery plays Burt Reynolds in a G-sting with suspenders, and that's the most reasonable decision John Boorman made in this 1974 "classic." In the future, Earth is ruled by Eternals, an advanced and secret sect of beings who reign over a savage group called Brutals. The Eternals have created a god named Zardoz to intimidate the Brutals, making them believe that killing is their natural state. However, Zed (Sean Connery), a Brutal warrior, challenges that assumption when he enters the Zardoz monument and is captured by an Eternal (Charlotte Rampling). There, he learns the truth about the Eternals and the false god that rules society. Join the conversation! Happy New Year from the Video Junkyard crew! We took a little holiday break this year but not to worry - we are back with a new review! This week we take a look at the 1974 classic horror film "Black Christmas". Directed by Bob Clark, written by A. Roy Moore, and starring Olivia Hussey, Keir Dullea, Margot Kidder, Andrea Martin, Lynne Griffin and John Saxon, Black Christmas is one of the first (if not THE first) telling of the "stranger in the house with the babysitter"-style slasher films. Taking place during the Christmas season, a group of sorority sisters are preparing for the holiday break when a derranged caller ("The Moaner") keeps calling and harrassing them. But soon the calls become more threatening. And then worse. One of the more inspirational/impactful films on the horror genre, Black Christmas has beeb remade multiple times. But how does it hold up in early 2023? Check out the Video Junkyard Podcast to find out!
On this episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast we continue our annual Christmas movie marathon with a long-time fan favorite (yet often forgotten holiday film) Gremlins! This 1984 classic was directed by Joe Dante, written by Chris Columbus and stars Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyte Axton, and an early role by Corey Feldman. When a father gives his son Billy (Galligan) a strange pet for Christmas, the creature - a Mogwai named Gizmo - he tells him to follow three important rules for caring for the creature: never bring him out into bright light, never get him wet, and never EVER feed him after midnight. When Billy accidentally breaks the last two rules, a bunch of new mogwais are created and transform into mischievious and monstrous gremlins that wreak havoc to their small midwestern town. With voice talents by Howie Mandel and Frank Welker to round out that cast, Gremlins was a smash hit in 1984. But how does it hold up in 2022? This week's movie was selected by our esteemed patron Tony Rodriguez. It's one we, collectively, had never seen before, and WHOA! is it something. If the poster art and show title weren't a giveaway, it's the 1994 Italian horror classic Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetary Man). Something is causing the dead to rise from their graves as flesh-eating zombies, and cemetery custodian Francesco Dellamorte (Rupert Everett) grows tired of killing them all for the second time. However, the town politicians won't listen to him, so Francesco is on his own. One day, he falls for a beautiful woman (Anna Falchi) whose husband has recently died -- but their affair is tragically interrupted by zombies, sending Francesco into a tailspin of madness and woe.
