RoboCop may be “the future of law enforcement” but he might also be much closer to reality than anyone ever dreamed or feared. Join us as we unpack this classic 1987 movie and the central concept that drives it.“Come quietly or there will be…trouble.”Officer Alex J. Murphy (R.I.P.)This episode of Does it Fly? is brought to you by our friends at Omni Consumer Products, who would like to encourage you to visit beautiful Delta City, Michigan, America's safest place to live…or else!Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop (1987) is genuinely one of the finest science fiction films of the 1980s. Its unique blend of biting satire and over-the-top violence and gore set it apart from the endless parade of Reagan-era hyper violent action movies and the unique “media breaks” and corporate culture feel remarkably (perhaps disturbingly prescient) almost 40 years after release. Hell, we might even argue that the cynical vision of the future on display in RoboCop was too optimistic given the state of the world these days, but that's neither here nor there.Because the central conceit of RoboCop, using cybernetics to enhance a human for the specific purpose of perfecting law enforcement, may have seemed like the stuff of science fiction in 1987, but it's a little closer to the realm of science fact today. Just how close is another story, but that's for our hosts, Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi and Tamara Krinsky, to decide. With that in mind, we'd like to remind everyone of the Prime Directives of our show (not to be confused with Starfleet General Order 1…we are a Roddenberry Entertainment production, after all):Explain the Science of RoboCopUnpack the Story Logic of RoboCopDiscuss the Vibes and Questions that RoboCop RaisesUphold the Law(Wait, no! That last one isn't ours).Check out the latest episode of Does it Fly? for the answers to these questions and more!https://youtu.be/uBbq29Tu7_cSUGGESTED VIEWING The RoboCop franchise is…well, let's pretend that it isn't a franchise. There is one perfect movie from director Paul Verhoeven and then there are fainter and fainter echoes in the form of two big screen sequels (and one reboot), a pair of live action TV series, one average (if bizarre) animated series and one truly unwatchable one. Seriously, the 1987 movie is an all-time genre classic and is not to be missed, and that's the crux of our discussion in this episode. But there's also a truly amazing four part documentary about the making of that film called, appropriately, RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop, which somehow manages to be every bit as compelling as the movie itself. Highly recommended for those who want to get an almost Tamara-like deep knowledge of this brilliant film.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! The Future of Law EnforcementTo build a cybernetic police officer, you require three key ingredients: powered exoskeletons, general robotics, and BCIs (brain-computer interfaces). All of these are pretty broad subjects, but the links will take you to what we believe are the easiest (and coolest!) overviews for the layperson.Robot Police Dogs“Woof, woof, you #@&*$!” Ted TalkMy Stroke of InsightGiven how much of Robo's origin story revolves around a traumatic brain injury and his essential recovery from that, Tamara recommends My Stroke of Insight, which you can find anywhere, but we recommend purchasing from here if you can.“OCP Runs the Cops!”We also recommend Radley Balko's Rise of the Warrior Cop for further insight on the militarization of police. It was written back in 2013 but like RoboCop, it's still incredibly relevant today.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?For a more recent take on a sci-fi dystopia, allow us to recommend our Squid Game episode!Just for comparison with another hero who uses robotics and cybernetics, we took a look at the science of Iron Man, as well!FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2621: RoboCop Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 8 July 2024 is RoboCop.RoboCop is a 1987 American science fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner. The film stars Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Daniel O'Herlihy, Ronny Cox, Kurtwood Smith, and Miguel Ferrer. Set in a crime-ridden Detroit in the near future, RoboCop centers on police officer Alex Murphy (Weller) who is murdered by a gang of criminals and revived by the megacorporation Omni Consumer Products as the cyborg law enforcer RoboCop. Unaware of his former life, RoboCop executes a campaign against crime while coming to terms with the lingering fragments of his humanity. The film was conceived by Neumeier while working on the set of Blade Runner (1982), and he developed the idea with Miner. Their script was purchased in early 1985 by producer Jon Davison on behalf of Orion Pictures. Finding a director proved difficult; Verhoeven dismissed the script twice because he did not understand its satirical content, until he was convinced of its value by his wife. Filming took place between August and October 1986, mainly in Dallas, Texas. Rob Bottin led the special-effects team in creating practical effects, violent gore and the RoboCop costume.Verhoeven emphasized violence throughout the film, making it so outlandish that it became comical. Censorship boards believed that it was too extreme, however, and several scenes were shortened or modified to receive an acceptable theatrical rating. RoboCop was a financial success upon its release in July 1987, earning $53.4 million. Reviewers praised it as a clever action film with deeper philosophical messages and satire, but were conflicted about its extreme violence. The film was nominated for several awards, and won an Academy Award and a number of Saturn Awards.RoboCop has been critically reevaluated since its release, and it has been hailed as one of the best films of the 1980s and one of the greatest science fiction and action films ever made. The film has been praised for its depiction of a robot affected by the loss of humanity, in contrast to the stoic and emotionless robotic characters of that era. RoboCop has continued to be analyzed for its themes such as the nature of humanity, personal identity, corporate greed and corruption, and is seen as a rebuke of the era's Reaganomics policies. Its success created a franchise: the sequels RoboCop 2 (1990) and RoboCop 3 (1993), children's animated series, live-action television shows, video games, comic books, toys, clothing and other merchandise. A remake was released in 2014.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:28 UTC on Monday, 8 July 2024.For the full current version of the article, see RoboCop on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Russell.

One good turn deserves another. This week we review the sequel to the mighty RoboCop (1987), the sequentially titled RoboCop 2 (1990). Cyborg Detroit policeman Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) is the sole officer on duty after the police force goes on strike against evil conglomerate Omni Consumer Products and its push to foreclose on the city of Detroit. Aside from dealing with the normal level of crime, Murphy must take on crime boss Cain (Tom Noonan), the spread of a dangerous new drug called "Nuke" and the attempt by psychologist Dr. Juliette Faxx (Belinda Bauer) to create another Robocop using a hardened criminal.

This week we finally get to one of our favorite cult classics... RoboCop (1987). In a violent, near-apocalyptic Detroit, evil corporation Omni Consumer Products wins a contract from the city government to privatize the police force. To test their crime-eradicating cyborgs, the company leads street cop Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) into an armed confrontation with crime lord Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith) so they can use his body to support their untested RoboCop prototype. But when RoboCop learns of the company's nefarious plans, he turns on his masters.

"Your move, creep." The year… vaguely near future. The setting… Old Detroit. The hero… a robotic cop resurrected by corporate greed fighting to regain some of his humanity. RoboCop, in a word, is awesome. The Paul Verhoeven masterpiece has everything you'd want from the 80s; goopy squibs, stop motion animated robots and a literal shootout in a cocaine factory. Clint, Cal and Alex dig into the incredible staying power this movie has thanks to its brilliant satire, why the extreme violence also has good comedic timing and why the campiness in Verhoeven's career is not a bug, it's a feature. Meanwhile, Omni Consumer Products developed a version of producer Dan's algorithm that can actually walk down stairs. Rivka and Frank are joined by TV writer and producer Mike Benner to discuss Paul Verhoeven's Robocop. They talk about how the film's evil corporation, Omni Consumer Products, serves as a perfect stand-in for consolidated corporate power. They also unpack Verhoeven's depiction of homoerotic male aggression as a metaphor for capitalist competition, and how the iconography of Robocop has been misappropriated by police officers who think the character is "cool" “badass” rather than “a cautionary metaphor for the dehumanization of police.”

Join us next week as we welcome back Snobby Bobby from our Patriot episode to talk about Demolition Man. Show notes: http://www.actualanarchy.com/201 Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.com Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter. We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film. The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film. We publish at least once per week; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics) and have guests. SUBSCRIBE, RATE AND REVIEW ON APPLE PODCASTS (or iTUNES)

With over 30,000 followers on the Amazon-owned platform, Fleeksie labels herself as the “world's most pointless Twitch streamer.” While she dips into a variety of games here and there, she's most often found in the Just Chatting category, watching videos and keeping up with her chat. stop going into people live streams and asking "how are you" we live. we streaming. other people are watching. the room is not on fire. things are ok. just comment on whats happening. ask someone else in the chat how they are doing if you want small talk everytime i say "im good how are you" i feel a little puke in the back of my throat rise up. its actually painful responding to that question while ik other people who been watching for 45 mins heard me say it 36 times to all the people before you came up in here with your small talk Dainty - How are you? https://www.tableoc.com/2020/09/10/ninja-is-back-exclusively-on-twitch/  After a months-long period of “will he or won't he” with two determined suitors, Twitch and YouTube, streaming megastar Tyler “Ninja” Blevins has announced that his post-Mixer streaming return will happen “only” on Twitch. Last year, Blevins signed an exclusive deal with Microsoft-owned streaming platform Mixer. In June, Microsoft abruptly announced that Mixer had reached the end of the line and encouraged streamers and viewers to move over to Facebook instead. Blevins was reportedly offered a Facebook deal that nearly doubled his multi-million dollar Mixer deal, but he turned it down. Now, months later, he's back where he started: on Twitch. Full - Why do you think the change of heart for Ninja?Gaming News Twitch brings custom esports competitions to streamers in closed beta  Twitch and esports go together like a dusting of salt on top of a chocolate chip cookie: the sweetness of victory etc., tempered by the saltiness of defeat. Today, Twitch launches Versus — a suite of competitive tools that will let creators on the site organize and manage their own tournaments — which promises to bring those agonies and ecstasies to any streamer who feels like pubstomping their community. While the feature is in closed beta for now, collegiate esports leagues, game devs, and Twitch Rivals competitors (along with some other Twitch streamers) will have access starting today. There is a waitlist you can join if you're interested in trying out Versus for yourself. Dainty - This seems like a great step for both e-sports and Twitch as a whole. What do you think about this move? Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake brings the classic back for Xbox One, PS4, and PC  Ubisoft is bringing back one of its most legendary games with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, a modern version of the classic action-adventure game set for release on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on January 21st, 2021. The company says that the new version of The Sands of Time is emphatically Ubisoft's first full-fledged remake, not a remaster or reboot. Ubisoft Pune & Ubisoft Mumbai rebuilt the original game from the ground up using Ubisoft's modern AnvilNext Engine, complete with new motion capture animation, new assets, and some adjustments to the gameplay for modern audiences. The Sands of Time Remake still strongly resembles the original, though, with the same storyline and gameplay. Don't expect a full-scale reimagining like the recent Final Fantasy 7 Remake. That said, the company is promising that it has enhanced the camera controls and combat system with the aim of improving on those aspects from their 2008 iterations. FullBump - Are you like me? I have never played this series at all and am actually kind of excited to try an older classic.Entertainment News MGM Is Developing a ROBOCOP Prequel Series That Focuses on a Young Dick Jones  I've got some exciting news for all you RoboCop fans out there! MGM is developing a prequel series that will focus on the life of a young Dick Jones. I'm sure you all remember the villainous and corrupt Senior Vice President of Omni Consumer Products, who at the end of the original movie, ended up blown away by RoboCop epically shooting him out of a boardroom window! Such an awesomely classic ‘80s movie death. There is also a new sequel for the original film that's in development, which is based on the original plans from RoboCop screenwriters Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner. Neill Blomkamp was originally attached to direct, but after he dropped out he was replaced with Abe Forsythe (Little Monsters). When talking about the ideas that they are playing with, Neumeier goes on to say: “There's the idea of doing things about business and law enforcement in the city of Detroit a minute-and-a-half in the future, it would be a way to do all sorts of stories about business and tech, Silicon Valley, corporations, snakes in suits, cops, all that. It's a wonderful rich tapestry. “So we've been talking about it and I think we have an interesting story. It's fun to work with a younger version of the Dick Jones we meet in RoboCop. He's an actualised corporate predator [in the move] but nobody necessarily starts out being the bad guy. Daintiest - In the wake of the popularity of retro synth music/future retroism this seems like great timing for a show like this. What's your take? THE WALKING DEAD Will End with an Extended Season 11 The Walking Dead's upcoming 11th season will be its last. Season 11 was originally set to air this October in line with the show's normal Fall TV cycle. However, the coronavirus pandemic means fans will only get the season 10 “finale” this year and Season 11 in 2021. Now, the upcoming season will be expanded from the 16-episode norm to a whopping 24 episodes over the course of the next two years. This means the series finale will take place in 2022. It's sad news for a lot of long-term and dedicated viewers. But Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier fans won't have to say goodbye to their faves forever. The aforementioned Deadline report reveals that actors Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride will go on to star in a Walking Dead spin-off series. The Daryl and Carol adventure will debut sometime in 2023. It would also be a spoiler for their future if it wasn't so obvious that they are basically unkillable at this point. FullBump - It's kind of crazy to think something that has been a TV and nerd culture staple is coming to an end. What are your thoughts and how do you feel about the spin off announcement?BOLD PREDICTIONS - Brought to you by the Tighe UpI cant tell you what the next must watch tv show will be but The mandalorian will have higher ratings than its first season while the Witcher will not. I cant tell you if anything will beat titanic but Wonder Woman 2 will have the top box office numbers of all the current justice league lines.  I cant tell you if anything will ever beat super mario but Assassin's creed will get a lot of blowback for leaving its roots. I cant tell you what was crossing Peter Quill's mind at “that” moment  butThor will be the first marvel solo with a 5th installment.Plug your stuff.Zazzaboo plug the site, Pod etc Thanks and we will see you next week!★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

RoboCop is set in near-future Detroit, where the city streets are just about completely dominated by the criminal element, while the police are neither respected nor welcome; they are virtually walking targets out there.  Desperate to clean up the crime-ridden community and build a gleaming new one in its place, the government officials turn to OCP, Omni Consumer Products, to build and manufacture the future of law enforcement, robotic police that are more powerful and well-armed than anything anyone has ever seen.  However, when the first prototypes prove inconsistent, the city officials balk at the idea, so an upstart faction within the OCP comes up with a newer, more "human" cop, a cyborg built using the remnant body of downed officer Alex Murphy (Peter Weller), and dubbed simply as "RoboCop".Things proceed splendidly for the RoboCop program, that is, until the human side of the cyborg begins to recollect his past life as Murphy, plagued with flashbacks to the family he lost and the psychopathic criminals who all but ended his life as he knew it.  Determined to bring the bad guys that did him in to justice, RoboCop sets out on a mission of his own, not realizing that the gang in question is actually in cahoots with a rogue entity within the OCP, who for all intents and purposes, also own the city, the police department, and the machine side of Murphy. Paul Verhoeven directs this scathing and potent satire on American commercialism and privatization.

This week, we wrap up our final film in "The Corporation from Hell!" cask which is another film directed by Paul Verhoeven, RoboCop. This insane sci-fi/action film is not only one of those most violent films of the 80s but also a smartly thought out satire that plays on many themes. Journey with us as we go back to witness the death and resurrection of Alex Murphy along with the dealings of the evil Omni Consumer Products. Our Flight is the perfect appetizer as we decide the worst film remake. We wrap up with a Nightcap by trying to figure out the best musical cue for a film character.
