Forty years ago this Fall, we saw the release of one of the most influential genre films of the Modern Era, this low-budget sci-fi horror thriller directed by a young upstart named James Cameron....this being his first full-on feature film.  It was a simple tale about a mild-mannered young waitress named Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) who unknowingly holds a very unique position to fight a future war against the machines, the imposing cybernetic assassin (Arnold Schwarzenegger) sent back from the future to kill her, and a spirited freedom fighter ALSO sent back from the future to protect her.  That freedom fighter's name is Kyle Reese and he's played by Michael Biehn (Aliens, Tombstone) amidst a pretty strong cast including Paul Winfield, Lance Henrickson, and Rick Rossovich.  What results is a tight 100 LA-based cat-and-mouse set mostly at night featuring lots of intense action set to a VERY iconic score from Brad Fiedel.  Dun Dun Dun DUN DUN...indeed!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Writer/director/actor Courtney Davis returns to the podcast to help us judge Alan J. Pakula's 1990 legal thriller PRESUMED INNOCENT starring Harrison Ford, Raul Julia, Bonnie Bedelia, Brian Dennehy, Paul Winfield and Greta Scacchi. Based on the best-selling novel by Scott Turow, PRESUMED INNOCENT spins the engrossing tale of a respected prosecutor accused of murdering a colleague. To give away any more of the plot would be a crime in itself. A box office hit upon release, the story has resurfaced in a new adaptation on Apple TV+ starring Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role. For a movie of highly enjoyable twists and turns (including a still-discussed ending), we highly recommend you see PRESUMED INNOCENT before listening to our spoiler-filled discussion, where we also launch into unrelated sidebars on Casino, Flags of Our Fathers, The Perils of Pauline, Donald Sutherland, Kinds of Kindness, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard's Architectural Digest profile, and much, much more! Boldly go into our most gloriously geektacular (and yes, longest) episode as Javi and Paul embark on an epic exultation of the soaring sacred text that is STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN. On June 4, 1982, Nicholas Meyer arguably saved the franchise by redefining it as a space opera mashup of Horatio Hornblower and Run Silent Run Deep, with a virtuosic score by the great James Horner. Instead of making sequel to 1979's STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, Meyer cunningly chose to forge a follow-up to the 1967 episode “Space Seed,” reuniting Ricardo Montalban with the iconic role of Khan, unleashing his towering performance as the ultimate antagonist. (And stick around until the end for a shocking decision about what our next movie will be!)

We're getting back to our regular programming with a special request from one of our listeners! Following our episode on The Road, listener Jeff shared his  recommendation for another post-apocalyptic movie. According to Jeff, “It's an old one, but it still checks out.” Released in 1977, the same year as Star Wars, and two years before Mad Max, this “road movie” see a small group of survivors of World War 3 attempt to drive across the desolate wasteland to where they hope more survivors are living, facing freakish mutated insects and other dangers along the way. Starring Jan-Michael Vincent, George Peppard, Paul Winfield, and very young Jackie Earle Haley, based on the novel by Roger Zelazny, and directed by George Smight, the movie was, to put it kindly, a flop, despite being released in the new “Sound 360” surround format. But it has earned a cult following in the years since, with Jeff among its devotees, thanks in part to the true star of the film: the wasteland-crawling armored RV called The Landmaster, designed by Dean Jeffries. As Jeff writes, “One of my favorite movies growing up - for the vehicle alone - was Damnation Alley. I'd love to hear Legends take on it.” And take it on we shall! Reviews reviews reviews, hey ho, let's GO! That said I'm still not a Ramones fan, though I like about 2 songs, whatever. Love them or hate em, let's kick off another round of 70's movie reviews. Today's offering starts off with a 1970 made for TV movie which later did get a theatrical release titled (The Tribe). Here the dad from a Christmas story, hates that the marines are now taking draftee's. He also hates hippies, especially one played by Jan Michael Vincent. Set a course for zaniness here on the military base. So great to see Darren McGavin play a drill Sargent. Seems unlikely but I heart it very much. Lets move on to (Walkin g stick 1970). Here we have Samantha Eggar as Deborah a cool person who is used for crime by this asshat. I believe it's called a love con. Lots of 70's London in this and she figures out asshat in the end, oops spoiler. I can't really figure out how the whole spoiler thing fits into our lil pod, I do know that I'd like to assume you've seen it and wanna hear our take, but also we could be turning you on to some great films so I'll keep spoilers to a minimum. Let's advance now to level 3 with (11 Harrowhouse 1974) and can Candice Bergen, Charles Gordon, and James Mason, make this jewel heist film NOT dull as dishwater. See Ma, no spoilers, HA. Ok next up is (Green Eye's 1977) No spoilers but we love us some Paul Winfield, and this made for TV movie about a very sweet man with a cool mom, trying to do right and cope with what happened in nam, that I've been searching for forever and is now on you tube, is flipping amazing!!!! Also it deals with a very under talked subject in film, and that's our war orphans. Along comes another made for t.v. movie that is finally available on you tube, and that's (Perfect Gentlemen 1978). So much amazing stuff going into this one, Lauren flipping Bacall, Ruth Flippin Gordon, Sandy flipping Dennis, with a script by Nora flipping Ephron. It's quite a feat that this doesn't seem to exceed the sum of it's parts. Oops spoiler. It is good though, and you can always listen, if you want to know more. Finally today we have (Starting Over 1979) this is also a film that has a lot of awesome goin into it. Who's a good boy?! Well, the miracle dog who licks his gunshot wound back to health is the Morgan family's very-good boy. Black sharecroppers in 1930s Louisiana had it tough enough, but they finally got their own movie in the early '70s and then had to play second fiddle to...the dog?! But, okay, they don't. Young Kevin Hooks is actually the main character, although Paul Winfield and Cicely Tyson got the accolades and the Oscar nominations for playing his parents. Martin Ritt was an underrated director who was always good on social issues. His Sounder isn't all that political, but Ryan DID get a little political about idiotic racism in this one-man show, So as you enjoy Victoria Day, settle in for a 30-minute monologue about a hardworking family (and their dog) in this 513th edition of Have You Ever Seen. The guys discuss the making of the second big screen Trek outing following their discussion 3 years ago of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). Following production troubles on that film, significant changes were made behind the scenes when the sequel was put into production. The stellar cast including Paul Winfield and Ricardo Montalban, are discussed as is James Horner's phenomenal score and a near perfect script, elements that come together to make a film held by many as the high point of a franchise that's been going since 1966.

We talked about so many things from his Classic Couples Counseling, his life growing up with his father Sherwood Schwartz, some about The Brady Bunch & Gilligans Island, he told some really amazing stories to a whole lot more!Lloyd J. Schwartz is the playwright. A man of all media, he wrote for the TV series Love, American Style; Alice; The Munsters Today; The A Team, The Love Boat, Baywatch and more. As an ABC network executive, he supervised production on Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, What's Happening and Three's Company. With his father, TV legend Sherwood Schwartz, he co-created Harper Valley P.T.A. Lloyd also produced numerous iterations of the Brady Bunch and Gilligan's Island franchises (created by Sherwood) for feature films, television and stage. With his wife Barbara, Lloyd created the long-running Storybook Theatre at Theatre West. He has also had 34 produced plays.CLASSIC COUPLES COUNSELING OPENS APRIL 1 AT THEATRE WEST. THIS PRODUCTION HAS BROADWAY POTENTIAL TELEVISION WRITER/PRODUCER OF THE BRADY BUNCH & GILLIGANS ISLANDLLOYD SCHWARTZ IS THE WRITER/ BRAINCHILD BEHIND THIS PRODUCTIONSchwartz said “ I was intrigued with the idea of what would happen if the very troubled Shakespearean characters went to couples therapy. What would it be like if Hamlet and Ophelia sought help? Or Romeo and Juliet? Or MacBeth and Lady MacBeth? Or Othello and Desdemona? or Kate and Petruchio? Would it help? And I then started imagining if the therapist had her own problems which would make her patient's problems even worse. And it leads to a group therapy where they are all there, and whatever problems they have get even worse. CLASSIC COUPLES COUNSELING is a comedy that pokes fun at Shakespeare's most famous couples...a comedy about tragedies. Or as Shakespeare said in "A ;Midsummer's Night Dreram:" "Oh, what fools these mortals. be."Established in 1962, Theatre West is the oldest continually running professional theatre company in the city of Los Angeles. It is a membership collective of actors, playwrights, directors, and technicians. Theatre West's alumni members include Ray Bradbury, Beau Bridges, Richard Dreyfuss, Sally Field, Betty Garrett, Martin Landau, Lee Meriwether, Jack Nicholson, Carroll O'Connor, Sherwood Schwartz, Joyce Van Patton, and Paul Winfield. Theatre West has produced more than 300 plays and musicals. Of these plays, nearly 70% are original works developed in its workshops and many have led to Broadway, regional tours, and feature films including A Bronx Tale by Chazz Palminteri and A Very Brady Musical by Lloyd Schwartz and Hope Juber. Our season continues with Moose on the Loose by Dina Morrone in June 2022, and Storybook Theatre's Goldilocks and the Three Bears is running Saturday matinees until June 2022. Review time so soon? Actually this is the right time, we are finally gettin our heads out of butts and doin it right. Six films today and we ain't wasting no mo time. Today we start off with (No deposit no return 1976). Don Knotts and the guy whose rad wife broke his electric sex lamp star with one of the kids from escape from witch mountain, in this not silly enough Disney film that really does not promote street smarts. Cue Don Knotts doin bug eyes. Next we Have James Caan and the first captain Janeway n this western that actually has a 70's car in it for a second. It also has bad ass Susan Tyrell as a teacher giving the kids arms training. We coulda of used her to teach street smarts in the last film. (Another man another chance 1977) was quite a pleasant surprise for me, and I like those. Onward into (Damnation alley 1977) Where Jan Michael Vincent, Rorschach, and a cool van see to it that Paul Winfield, who's never even met Admiral Kirk, gets killed off way too soon. (Fire sale 1977) has Alan Arkin in the director's chair again for this wacky arson thrill ride that I liked better than the other 2 Decade under the influence crewmates. Please see this film under the influence. Next up we see my parents and friends parents roll their eyes and sigh as lil me once again grabs (Attack of the killer tomatoes 1978) off the video store shelf. Our fearless crew finally take on this low budget spoof and see if it holds up to adult eyes, or will we just roll them. Lastly we review (St. Jack 1979). R.I.P. Peter Bogdanovich, who actually appears in this film way more than your usual directors cameo's. Also we found him to look like an older brother to Rick Moranis. St. jack follows Jack, played amazingly by Ben Gazzara as he walks around Singapore knowing absolutely everyone in town. Thanks y'all, and if for some reason you like our shows please spread the word. Our people are out there somewhere, please help us find them.

In this episode of "A Conversation With," I sat down with Dorez Douglas. She is an author, poet, and film producer located in Los Angeles, California. She shared many nuggets about the film industry and here is just one of the nuggets she shared: How to tell if you have what it takes to be a filmmaker. "I'll tell you a good first project for filmmakers and most of them don't want to do it because they say, well, I can't tell a story in five minutes. But you should do a five or ten minutes short just to see how it goes and to see what it is that, you know, and what you don't know. And if you can, if at all possible, try to do it write the story in such a way that you need minimal locations should be 1- 2 at the most. Or try to find one location that has different areas, you know, that you can use maybe a backyard or patio or front porch or whatever it is. And you know, or rent an Airbnb, shoot, whatever you're gonna shoot all in that one location, five minutes. Usually, that equals about five pages depending on how much action you have in the story. And if you do that for this is just only for filmmakers to do that. You'll see whether or not you have what it takes. " ================== Dorez Douglas BIO: Dorez Douglas is an author, poet and producer in Los Angeles, California. She got her start as co-executive producer of a children's animated special for ABC-TV. The program, “Jirimpimbira: An African Folktale” aired in 1995 and received a Parents Choice Award. It featured the voices of Diahann Carroll, Paul Winfield, James Avery, Meshach Taylor, Dawnn Lewis and Jamil Smith. In the late 90's, Douglas created the Entertainment Industry Training Program (EITP) as part of Concerned Citizens of South Central Los Angeles. The program trained youth (13-18 years old) for jobs behind the camera and was co-sponsored by DreamWorks and Sony Pictures Entertainment. For the past two decades, Douglas and her partner, 2x Academy-Award winner Willie D. Burton, have produced various projects including a feature film, "Beverlyhood.". The outrageous comedy featured Kym Whitley, Lavell Crawford, Walter Powell, Yolanda "Yo-Yo" Whittaker and Destiny's Child. In September 2020, Douglas and Burton shot a short film called "Voices," starring Lamman Rucker. The film premiered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and in Los Angeles, California. It has been submitted to several film festivals. Currently in production is "Still We Rise: Life in 2020," a documentary profiling various people around the country dealing with The Pandemic, including four men living in a group home. Their next project is a docu-drama about the African-American female founder of one of the top Charter Schools in Louisiana. Filming will start in September 2021. Feature projects in development include: "The Untold Secret," "Legal Hitman," and “Desire,” all based on true stories, and "Cabin 4,” a supernatural thriller. Douglas was born in Detroit, Michigan, but moved to Los Angeles in 1980. She is a former gospel singer and is the daughter of a minister. Douglas has written three eBooks about the entertainment industry. In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite "Star Trek" films, and one of his favourite films of all time: the 1982 American science fiction film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" directed by Nicholas Meyer. The story of the film sees Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and the crew of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 face-off against an old adversary of theirs by the name of Khan Noonien Singh (played by Ricardo Montalbán) - a genetically engineered criminal from the 20th Century - who in his opinion was marooned with his crew and his beloved wife 15 years before by then Captain Kirk on a planet that over time was transformed from a world filled with life to one that now resembles a wasteland. However, when Khan learns that there is a secret "Genesis Device" that has been created capable of transforming a lifeless planetoid into a perfect haven for his people, Khan decides to steal a starship in order to obtain this new device that could be seen as a weapon - and Khan also decides to impart his wrath of revenge against the now Admiral Kirk for all the loss that has been sustained. The film once again stars Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, George Takei, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, and also stars Bibi Besch, Merritt Butrick, Paul Winfield, and Kirstie Alley. And the phenomenon score was composed by the late great James Horner. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

TREK IT OUT By Jake Morgan Strange New Worlds Is Officially In Production Last week, Friday March 12th, big Strange New Worlds news dropped. In a post on StarTrek.com, the casting of five new series regulars was announced. Does anyone else think this is interesting? Five, five-hundredth. No? Just us? Okay. The StarTrek.com article featured a video with the five new faces–Babs Olusanmokun, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Jess Bush, and Melissa Navia–along with Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, and Ethan Peck. The video not only introduced the fresh new additions, it also officially announced the start of production on the highly anticipated Strange New Worlds. Image: ViacomCBS, via StarTrek.com Co-showrunner and Executive Producer Akiva Goldsman said in the article ”In a career, there is never enough work that is pure joy. I feel that my friend Alex Kurtzman along with David Stapf at CBS Studios and Julie McNamara at Paramount+ have given me just that by letting me haunt the stock rooms of my favorite candy store and I am grateful.  With a hell of a cast and undying love for The Original Series, we boldly go.” For more about the newest Star Trek regulars, or to watch the video referenced here-in, be sure to trek out the show notes! “The Center Seat” Announced Star Trek fans love a good documentary about, well, Star Trek. So if you’re one of those Star-Trekumentarians, then our good news keeps getting better! The folks that delivered the popular Down to Earth with Zac Efron and The Toys That Made Us have announced their newest eight-episode mini-series set to air on The History Channel, The Center Seat: 55 Years Of Star Trek. And it’s about...Star Trek! Image: The Nacelle Company, via Deadline. The project was created and directed by The Nacelle Company’s founder and CEO Brian Volk-Weiss, who said of the series ”Star Trek, from before I was 10 years old, gave me the closest thing I have to a code to follow in my life. If it wasn’t for the words ‘I don’t believe in the no-win scenario,’ I’d be very alone, broke, and miserable in this world. So to say this is a passion project would be a tremendous understatement.” According to Deadline, the project is described as the ”ultimate deep dive into the world of Star Trek. Timed to coincide with the iconic sci-fi franchise’s 55th anniversary this year, it will offer Trekkies a behind-the-scenes look at pivotal moments in the franchise’s history — from its inception at Lucille Ball’s production company Desilu through recent film and television adaptations.” No official release date has been announced, but keep scanning Priority One for updates! Star Trek Gets A(nother) Movie Scribe We love talking Star Trek movies. We love talking about possible casts, directors, writers. We love talking, over and over, about possible plots and would-be cameos. Love. It.  Okay, if that sounded a bit...let’s say, facetious...it's because it was. On Thursday, March 4th, Deadline reported that a path has been re-chosen, and another writer is set to take the helm: Discovery scribe Kalinda Vazquez. Vazquez has served as co-executive producer on Fear the Walking Dead and, recently, teamed with Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin to tackle an adaption of Roger Zelazny sci-fi novel Roadmarks. It is believed that this newest iteration will be independent of Trekantino and Noah Hawley’s now-defunct pandeme-Trek. But beyond that, little is known about the project.  Keep your ear on Priority One, we are sure to cover all the big movie news… Nick Meyer’s Movie Pitch We love talking Trek movies...whoa. Déjà vu. But this Star Trek movie news–or maybe it’s better to call it a talking point–is pretty exciting. On March 10th, friends of the Roddenberry Network Trekmovie.com reported that Star Trek legend Nicholas Meyer has pitched his own idea for Star Trek’s next silver screen showing. According to the story, Meyer told Trekmovie ”My partner Steven-Charles Jaffe and I wrote a whole treatment and plan for a Star Trek feature film. We didn’t write a whole script. We wrote a very detailed treatment and a whole pitch doc with illustrations. It’s a very comprehensive thing. And we first took it to Alex Kurtzman, then we took it to J.J. [Abrams], and then we took it to Emma Watts at Paramount.” Image: Paramount, via TrekMovie.com Meyer clarified that the story was not a rehash of the Ceti Alpha story, but something entirely different before saying ”It was a detailed proposal for what could have been a film, or it could have been a series, or it could have been a film leading to a series or a series leading to a film… It could be a series of films. Yeah, absolutely.” Meyer continued, ”This was an independent piece of the Star Trek universe based on holes in the chronology, which would allow for the insertion of original material.” The Wrath of Kahn Loses Face Our colleagues at the Treksperts podcast recently hosted Edward Eddie Egan, who served as Wrath of Khan's unit publicist. He shared an interesting tidbit about the production, explaining that the ground scene on Ceti Alpha V with Captain Terrell (Paul Winfield) and Chekov (Walter Koenig) walking towards the "life sign." Those were actually stunt doubles–but the casting person was unaware that Paul Winfield was an African American actor, and didn't hire an African American stunt double to fill that position. By the time they got to rolling, according to Egan "they made a judgement to make the stunt double up as an African American." It was a conscious choice to move forward, until somebody informed the union during the shoot, and they found a proper African American actor to play the role. That's...insanity. https://heavy.com/entertainment/star-trek/how-blackface-stoped-wrath-of-khan-filming/ Colm Meaney's Chief Concern We love talking Trek movies… hang on, are we in a time loop?  We also love hearing from Trek actors and the inevitable question: now that we have new series like Picard and Lower Decks - would you consider a return to your role? Now who could be the most important character to consider returning? Thanks to Lower Decks, we know it must be…Miles Edward O’Brien. Image: ViacomCBS, via StarTrek.com In an interview with Collider, Colm Meaney spoke about his new Ireland-set crime story Pixie, but was also asked if he would consider a return for the Chief. Meaney responded saying  “I’ve always felt that seven years in a space suit was long enough. I don’t know. As you get older you kind of get a bit nostalgic about some of the stuff you’ve done in the past. It might be nice to go back and have a look at it again.  Generally speaking over the years I would have been reluctant to go back to O’Brien, I have to say.  But, you know, you never say never.” When Meaney was told about Mike McMahon’s reference to Deep Space Nine’s chief of operations being the most important person in Starfleet history, he responded by saying they finally got it right. Well yes, but Klingons have been getting a lot of attention recently, and STO’s other sometimes-villains are feeling left out. Anyway it’s another Galactic Red Alert Event! But there’s good news if orbital defense is more your speed, or you just really hate ground maps. “Synth Wave”, the TFO set during Star Trek: Picard’s Attack on Mars, joins the event line-up awarding Daily Progress. Picard also provides this year’s Grand Prize ground weapon: the Martian Mining Laser last seen mass murdering on Utopia Planitia. What an…interesting way to commemorate the day humanity reached for the stars and found a helping hand. Can We Get A Little Magic In Our STO? By Shane Hoover March 23rd marked the launch of Cryptic’s newest open beta game, Magic: Legends. Up to now, we’ve mostly discussed Magic: Legends when STO developers have left STO to join the Magic team. But a bit of interesting discussion on the Magic: Legends Discord channel has us intrigued. Much like STO’s Lockboxes, Magic: Legends has a monetization feature called Booster Packs. The first Booster Pack has been released, and the Grand Prize is a new character class called the Dimir Assassin. In a conversation entirely too familiar to STO veterans, Magic players were bemoaning their luck when opening Booster Packs. Some players declared that they had spent hundreds of dollars without winning the Assassin. Image: Cryptic Studios. Then a Cryptic developer named Cryptic_Misa dropped in with a comment. Misa, listed as a Senior Systems Designer, said "Each time you open a pack and don't get assassin, you you have a higher chance to get it in the next one, until it's 100%." So. Captains. If Cryptic are willing to engineer Magic lootboxes this way, why not STO lootboxes? What would it mean for Lockboxes and Promo boxes if the odds on the Grand Prize ship escalated? Doomsday Dawns for Fleet Command By Shane Hoover They say there’s no devil, but there is. Heading right for Star Trek Fleet Command. I saw it. The third and final part of Fleet Command’s TOS arc is arriving, and it’s bringing the fearsome Doomsday Machine. Players must fight to save the U.S.S. Constellation, and the galaxy, from doom. Along with the final phase of the TOS arc, the new patch brings some much anticipated new features. Chief among those is the “Refits” feature, which brings Captains the chance to customize their ships with new visual cosmetics skins or weapon fire effects. Some refits even provide performance buffs, too. TOS Scotty and Chekov are joining as new Rare officers. For all the details on what’s new, Trek out Scopely’s patch notes. https://startrekfleetcommand.scopely.com/2021/03/09/patch-28-release-notes/ Questions of Rules, Matters of Honor By Thomas Reynolds If you picked up STA’s Klingon Rulebook last fall, you might’ve noticed some changes to how the game works. Rest assured: according to the Continuing Mission fan site, you have not entered yet another alternate timeline in the franchise multiverse. CM member Mephit James has offered a succinct breakdown of the new Rulebook’s mechanical modifications and clarifications. These’ll probably be included as Core Rulebook errata in the near future, so Trek on over and get caught up. https://continuingmissionsta.com/2021/02/11/rule-changes-in-the-klingon-empire-rulebook/ Klingons Never Seem To Go Slow, Do They By Thomas Reynolds Core RPG rulebooks tend to be hefty and, at 400 pages, STA’s Klingon rulebook’s no exception. But who has time to read all that when there are battles to be fought, and glory to be won? For players short on time, funds, or attention span, Modiphius has a new Klingon-centric Quickstart PDF in their store. The Quickstart provides just enough direction to run the included adventure, “The Tip of the Bat’Leth,” with six premade characters. You’ll need to provide dice, tokens, bloodwine, and other Klingon paraphernalia–but hey, can’t beat the Quickstart’s price tag of nothing. Image: Modiphius Entertainment.

So if you're one of those Star-Trekumentarians, then our good news keeps getting better! The folks that delivered the popular Down to Earth with Zac Efron and The Toys That Made Us have announced their newest eight-episode mini-series set to air on The History Channel, The Center Seat: 55 Years Of Star Trek. And it's about...Star Trek! Image: The Nacelle Company, via Deadline. The project was created and directed by The Nacelle Company's founder and CEO Brian Volk-Weiss, who said of the series ”Star Trek, from before I was 10 years old, gave me the closest thing I have to a code to follow in my life. If it wasn't for the words ‘I don't believe in the no-win scenario,' I'd be very alone, broke, and miserable in this world. So to say this is a passion project would be a tremendous understatement.” According to Deadline, the project is described as the ”ultimate deep dive into the world of Star Trek. Timed to coincide with the iconic sci-fi franchise's 55th anniversary this year, it will offer Trekkies a behind-the-scenes look at pivotal moments in the franchise's history — from its inception at Lucille Ball's production company Desilu through recent film and television adaptations.” No official release date has been announced, but keep scanning Priority One for updates! Star Trek Gets A(nother) Movie Scribe We love talking Star Trek movies. We love talking about possible casts, directors, writers. We love talking, over and over, about possible plots and would-be cameos. Love. It.  Okay, if that sounded a bit...let's say, facetious...it's because it was. It is believed that this newest iteration will be independent of Trekantino and Noah Hawley's now-defunct pandeme-Trek. But beyond that, little is known about the project.  Keep your ear on Priority One, we are sure to cover all the big movie news… Nick Meyer's Movie Pitch We love talking Trek movies...whoa. Déjà vu. But this Star Trek movie news–or maybe it's better to call it a talking point–is pretty exciting. On March 10th, friends of the Roddenberry Network Trekmovie.com reported that Star Trek legend Nicholas Meyer has pitched his own idea for Star Trek's next silver screen showing. According to the story, Meyer told Trekmovie ”My partner Steven-Charles Jaffe and I wrote a whole treatment and plan for a Star Trek feature film. We didn't write a whole script. We wrote a very detailed treatment and a whole pitch doc with illustrations. It's a very comprehensive thing. Thanks to Lower Decks, we know it must be…Miles Edward O'Brien. Image: ViacomCBS, via StarTrek.com In an interview with Collider, Colm Meaney spoke about his new Ireland-set crime story Pixie, but was also asked if he would consider a return for the Chief. Meaney responded saying  “I've always felt that seven years in a space suit was long enough. I don't know. As you get older you kind of get a bit nostalgic about some of the stuff you've done in the past. It might be nice to go back and have a look at it again.  Generally speaking over the years I would have been reluctant to go back to O'Brien, I have to say.  But, you know, you never say never.” When Meaney was told about Mike McMahon's reference to Deep Space Nine's chief of operations being the most important person in Starfleet history, he responded by saying they finally got it right. Movie review time again. Today we review Cicely Tison and Paul Winfield in sounder 1972. Yes the family classic about the dog you barely see. Omg I just got it. People love dogs, but they generally don't love looking at racism in America as much, soooooo. Next we take on John Voight in 1974's Conrack. Directed by Martin Ritt and based off Pat Conroys book, the water is wide, which apparently was also a play my mom once saw. Onto 1975's A hiding place. I remembered reading this in high school, I liked it. This movie however, well you'll just have to listen and see. Stars Julie Harris, the mighty Eileen Heckard, and many other rad people. Next we have a listener request for a review of, The devils express 1976 starring Wartooth Tansania, a mystical talisman and martial arts. Finally today we review 1978's A hero ain't nothin but a sandwich, starring Cicely Tison, Paul Winfield, heroin, Larry B Scott, and Helen Martin. Thanks y'all for listening

BackTrekking returns again to look back at the real-world inspirations of classic Trek episodes! Some episodes of Trek are so iconic, they define what a generation considers to be "Star Trek". TOS had "The Trouble With Tribbles", "The Naked Time", "Arena", and more. TNG has "The Best of Both Worlds", "The Measure of a Man", "The Inner Light", and of course "Darmok". "Darmok" features an alien race that communicates by cultural allusion who kidnap Captain Picard to a desert planet where he must partake in a symbolic hunting ritual to further the comity of their two species. Let's see Battlestar Galactica do that. Plus, it's quintessentially TNG; if Captain Kirk had to fight an electric triceratops, he'd have drop-kicked it on arrival and then lectured Paul Winfield about respecting the Federation's sovereignty. This is a plot that could only work with Jean-Luc Picard in the lead, throwing himself fully into trying to comprehend the incomprehensible, because it would mean a net gain of understanding in the universe. Hilariously, his mission to understand Dathon and the Children of Tama nearly fails at the outset simply because he refuses a proferred knife, assuming it to be a token of hostility. Classic JL."Darmok" may be one of the most famous examples of the classic "man and blank are stranded together and must ally or perish", but there's another nearly forgotten version of the tale that contains just as much warmth and optimism as Trek's take. "Enemy Mine" is a nearly forgotten film and, at first glance, it's not hard to see why: outdated special effects, corny dialogue, and a climax lifted straight out of an '80s action film. But, what promises to be a clash between stellar enemies becomes a tale of survival, friendship, and family, where our heroes must overcome not only linguistic separation but biology and societal programming, as well. Just keep Mickey Mouse's name out your mouth. On this episode, we talk about the inconvenient persistence of tribalism, the misleading marketing campaign behind Enemy Mine and the film's troubled production, Louis Gossett Jr.'s skill in bringing Jerry to life, the peerless talents of Patrick Stewart and Paul Winfield, the complications of the Tamarian language, the film's surprisingly progressive take on intersexuality, and the importance of history and myth in bringing people together. We also discuss Robert Duncan McNeill's unrealized movie stardom, Dennis Quaid as the Chris Pratt of the '80s, glass bubble-based technology, magical negro aliens, googling "darmok", the point of an XO, autotune for words, a little Picard talk, a quick Pop-In(tm), Kal tells his Paul Winfield story, and our dice are trying to kill the show!LOL GilgameshGet "Enemy Mine" on Blu-ray!https://amzn.to/3734P2cJoin us in the Just Enough Trope Discord!https://discord.gg/EAx5VGXTweet at the show or your hosts with your suggestions for future episodes!http://www.twitter.com/backtrekkinghttp://www.twitter.com/ka1ibanhttp://www.twitter.com/gooeyfameCheck out the other shows on the Just Enough Trope network!http://www.justenoughtrope.comTheme: Disco Medusae Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

“Sounder” the 1972 film is set in 1933 during the Great Depression. The Morgan’s are a family of sharecroppers in Louisiana who face the devastating effects of a scarcity of food. Director Martin Ritt is masterful in telling this story and it is one of his many excellent films. Arrest, prison time, segregation, unrelenting work demands and low crop prices are all factors for the family. Through all of this the family shares a strong bound of love and survival to keep their farm. Together Cicely Tyson as Rebecca Morgan and Paul Winfield as Nathan Lee Morgan are the mother and father of a proud family. Kevin Hooks as young son David Lee embarks alone on a journey to find Nathan Lee who is serving prison time at a work camp. David Lee is helped and sheltered by the devoted teacher Camille played by Janet MacLachlan. Carmen Matthews as neighbor Mrs. Boatwright, Taj Mahal as Ike and a strong cast help shape the story. James Best as Sheriff Young represents the 1930’s political structure within the Parish.“Sounder” was both a critical and financial success. It was nominated for these four Academy Awards-Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Writing (Screenplay-based on material from another medium). The film stands the test of time.Up next we have the first of four musicals "Yankee Doodle Dandy"Here's the IMDB page for "Sounder"Here's a link to "Sounder" on YouTube Here's a link to Cicely Tyson's interview about "Sounder" on YouTube Check us out on Patreon at www.patreon.com/classicmoviereviews for even more content and bonus shows.

Episode 183: The Crew's running from a time traveling cyborg as they discuss James Cameron's The Terminator (1984). This film is the perfect chase movie, never losing its pace once. Arnold Schwarzenegger became an action icon and a household name after this film, in one of his rare villain performances (don't forget Mr. Freeze). Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn are great, but their careers never got the boost Arnold's did. And Stan Winston's makeup is jaw-dropping for a $6.4 million film made in 1984. Brad Fiedel's score is great! Here's the download link on Apple Music. The Force Fed Sci-Fi Movie Podcast

This week, we take look at the classic and franchise-setting film, The Terminator! We'll be discussing The Terminator movie cast, The Terminator special effects, the Nike shoes product placement in the film, our own The Terminator film review and rating, and more! So take a seat, listen to our podcast episode and/or read and learn about this legendary movie (and if you leave, you'll be terminated...jk). The Terminator Movie Cast and Director James Cameron as Director/Writer We've briefly discussed James Cameron here at Force Fed Sci-Fi before when we discussed and reviewed Strange Days, which Cameron wrote. However, The Terminator was his directorial debut. And for his directorial debut, Cameron was beyond successful. Of course, we'll talk about the legacy a bit later, but we all know this first film spawned a globally known franchise. Arnold Schwarzeneggar as the Terminator / T-800 / "model 101" It may be safe to say that this movie helped Schwarzeneggar reach global fame while his previous film Conan the Barbarian was more of a break-through role. It's interesting to think as to why his terminator role raised his stardom. While it did help that this film was praised for its special effects, why did a part with little emotion and only 17 to 18 lines make Arnold famous? Prior to selecting Schwarzeneggar as the title role, Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone were in line to receive the part. In fact, Cameron wanted OJ simpson to be the terminator but decided against it (ironically) because he felt OJ could not convey a convincing killer. Schwarzeneggar was actually considered for the role of Kyle Reese first, but it's probably a good thing that his role switched due to Cameron wanting someone bigger and intimidating playing the role (kind of a no-brainer in our opinion). His ability to play such a brutal and murdering cybernetic robot with no emotion was excellent and well portrayed. Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese We weren't too familiar with Biehn's filmography prior to The Terminator. With that being said, we think he did a pretty good job executing the role of Reese. What we were intrigued about was casting someone who had more smarts to fight the terminator rather than another body builder. In addition, he's a kind of a scrawny guy. As we talked and thought about it more, you wonder how much actors like Schwarzeneggar and Stallone influenced roles of villains and superheros. Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor Hamilton does a great job playing Connor, who's arc is the most interesting, but doesn't reveal itself until close to the end of the film. For most of the movie, she's an unassuming and almost damsel in distress of a character. She doesn't believe in herself which makes her doubt Reese's story of her raising the leader of a future resistance. Maybe it's because the terminator has closed in on her and is about to take her life, but she musters up a lot of courage to start fighting back, even yells at Reese as he's badly injured, "On your feet soldier!" While Reese is the one who damages the terminator, its Connor that ultimately leads the cyborg a certain way so she can crush and defeat it. Paul Winfield as lieutenant Ed Traxler The police lieutenant that gets shot by the terminator during the police station ... we think massacre is a good word for it. Winfield would go on to appear in several other sci-fi outings, albeit small and brief roles, including Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the Star Trek The Next Generation series, as well as Babylon 5. He eventually had a bit of a voice-over career as well. Lance Henrikson as sergeant Hal Vukovich The police sergeant that also gets blown away during the incredible police station shoot up sequence. Henrikson was the veteran actor in the film actually with a number of credits prior, including Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but only had a small supporting role in this film. And a short and brief appearance by a very young Bill Paxton...

A decade after William Shatner starred in the Twilight Zone episode “The Nightmare at 20,000 Feet,” he took a lead role in this TV horror movie with a similar name. No. But did it give actresses like Tammy Grimes and Paul Winfield a chance to play bigger than they would have in a cinematic outing? Oh my goodness, yes. In this week’s episode, it’s a sci-fi spectacular as Ebony and Caro navigate the asteroid field of a movie that is Solo. We talk everything from Ron Howard’s directing to the squandering of Thandie Newton to the Star Wars series’ gradual shift into a much less interesting approach to storytelling. We reserve particular ire, however, for the film’s treatment of its feisty, politically revolutionary droid L3-37. From there, we travel back in time to 1984 to revisit the James Cameron classic, The Terminator! In later episodes, we’ll look at other franchise properties, but we wanted to go back to where it all began. Our discussion touches on the great supporting performances of Lance Henriksen and Paul Winfield as a couple of cynical but decent cops, how Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor is presented as a “virtuous” mother figure, what makes the special effects so great, and especially Arnold Schwarzenegger’s performance as a literal killing machine and how he came to embody an ideal of manhood in the 1980s. Other topics include the cancellation of Roseanne, the brilliance of The Americans’ final season, and how so often even the warmest and most inviting children’s literature tells children of color that they are not welcome to fully enter the worlds those books create.
