It's about money we talk about this money-tested film that made a lot of time at the box office, In Time. It's a very subtle critique of capitalism that surely flew over most people's heads and will be appreciated in another money as one of the smartest movies ever. Just kidding! Really flimsy time/money exchange rates, displaying bank accounts in plain sight, the Robin Hood ending and so much more to be discussed here! Just listen! You've got plenty of money! In this episode, we analyze the 1997 sci-fi film Gattaca, directed by Andrew Niccol, alongside Wythe Marshall and Chris Pickett from the "Why We Roll" podcast. We examine the film's portrayal of a future shaped by genetic engineering and social stratification, contrasting 'valids' and 'in-valids' in a society that discriminates based on genetics. Our discussion highlights the film's casting choices and the moral ambivalence surrounding its individualistic narrative, embodied by Vincent's journey to overcome systemic barriers. We also reflect on the film's aesthetic and its critique of reliance on genetics, acknowledging its limitations in addressing classism. In this timely episode, Jacob, Tate, and Sage dive into 2011's In Time, a sci-fi thriller where time is literally money. While the concept intrigued them, the execution left much to be desired. With a premise full of potential, the trio discusses how the movie's ideas are overshadowed by its flawed storytelling and missed opportunities. Jacob feels the film had a solid foundation but couldn't quite get it right, Tate thinks it could've been much more engaging, and Sage feels it ultimately falls short. Tune in for a conversation filled with disappointment, yet a healthy dose of appreciation for the film's bold vision. This movie was directed by Andrew Niccol.GD4AM: 51/100IMDb: 6.7/10Metacritic: 53/100Letterboxd: 2.9/5.0RT: 36%In a future where people stop aging at 25, but are engineered to live only one more year, having the means to buy your way out of the situation is a shot at immortal youth. When listener Rob F. commissioned "Gattaca" in honor of his father, we all remembered it as beautiful, futuristic and distinct. Oddly enough, we couldn't remember much else. We remembered Ethan Hawke but not his lengthy voiceovers. We remembered Jude Law but not the incinerator scene. We remembered Uma Thurman but not her character's heart condition. This 1997 sci-fi debut for director Andrew Niccol made some interesting choices, like casting loads of TV talent and pretending Jude Law and Ethan Hawke look anything alike. And it also had some swagger, like pinstripe spacesuits and film-noir vibes. The Shat Crew was left to debate: Is "Gattaca" a case of style over substance, or is it a visionary film that went underappreciated for years? Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review, where today we're delving into the DNA of a sci-fi masterpiece, Gattaca. This 1997 film, directed by Andrew Niccol, serves up a thought-provoking look at a future dictated by genetic engineering, where your DNA determines your destiny.Gattaca presents a world where society is divided between the "Valids," those genetically engineered for perfection, and the "In-Valids," conceived naturally and seen as inferior. It's a chilling vision of a future where eugenics is not just accepted but embraced.Ethan Hawke stars as Vincent Freeman, an "In-Valid" who dreams of space travel but is confined to menial jobs due to his genetic makeup. Undeterred, Vincent assumes the identity of a "Valid" (played by Jude Law) to join the Gattaca space program. It's a gripping tale of determination, identity, and the unquantifiable aspects of the human spirit.Gattaca explores themes of discrimination, privacy, and the ethical implications of genetic manipulation. It questions the value we place on perfection and whether our genetics should define our capabilities and our place in the world. With its sleek aesthetic, compelling narrative, and profound questions about humanity, Gattaca is more relevant today than ever. As we edge closer to its depicted future, the film serves as a cautionary tale about the path of progress and the essence of being human. So, whether you're a sci-fi aficionado or just someone intrigued by the moral quandaries of future technologies, Gattaca offers a captivating watch. Join us on Bad Dads Film Review as we dissect this cinematic gem, exploring how it challenges our views on science, society, and the indomitable human spirit.
"You want to know how I did it? This is how I did it, Anton: I never saved anything for the swim back." We watched "Gattaca" from 1997, directed by Andrew Niccol and we're suddenly feeling less than... perfect. Imagine a place where everyone looks like Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law and you've got the genetically manipulated world of Gattaca. Being surrounded by all these ridiculously goodlooking people might be annoying in person, but it's business as usual in this film where genetically manipulating unborn children is the norm. In the "not too distant future" depicted through a retro-futurist lense we get the clean lines, chromed out details and mid-century modern design that we immediately latched on to when we first saw this movie. Our three annoyingly beautiful leads fit in perfectly in this meticulously crafted world. Uma Thurman looks like a photograph in every shot, Ethan Hawke has never looked better and Jude Law... baby Jude Law really makes you understand why he was the most in-demand actor in Hollywood in the early 2000's. Don't be mistaken - these three genetically gifted humans are more than just pretty faces - they act the hell out of this movie. Ethan and Jude are giving bickering married couple - we were chanting "Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!" in more than one of their scenes together - and Uma takes what could be a thankless role and really shines. Gattaca is an allegory for anyone who has ever felt "othered" by society wrapped in a cool sci-fi package. Get into it. Ever wondered what it's like to live another person's life but keep your own mind? What makes us so uniquely different? My guest today, psychologist and geneticist Robert Plomin, argues that it's largely due to a 1% difference in our DNA. Research Professor in Behavioural Genetics at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King's College London for 13 years, Robert grew up in a household with “no books” in Chicago, but still excelled at school. It's in the 1970s, at the University of Texas at Austin that he falls in awe with behavioral genetics while studying psychology. Since then, his work - in great part based on twin studies - has highlighted how both genetic and environmental factors are crucial, but it's their interaction that's most determinant. That's why he comes to a fascinating and exciting conclusion: knowing everything about our DNA and our futures could improve our societies. By unlocking the secrets of our DNA, we have the power to tailor our environments for optimal health and happiness, ditching the one-size-fits-all "golden yardstick" that Robert so vehemently rejects. In this episode, you'll learn about: The relationship between psychology and genetics; Austin, Texas in the 70s; Why dreaming about becoming an F1 champion wasn't enough for him to become one; The ethics of genetics and how to handle it in responsibly; Why your children should get to do what they love, whatever you think; How your perception of things is actually a controlled hallucination. Anniversary Month comes to a close with the 25th anniversary of The Truman Show! Ben, Cory, and Noah discuss Peter Weir's satirical... sci-fi... psychological... dramedy (?), starring Jim Carrey in his pivot to drama. Directed by Peter Weir and written by Andrew Niccol. Starring Jim Carrey and featuring Laura Linney, Ed Harris, Noah Emmerich, Natascha McElhone, Holland Taylor, Paul Giamatti, and Brian Delate.
What would a future look like where your genetic make up could dictate the jobs you do, the schools you go to? How would you feel knowing your life expectancy from birth? This is explored in Gattaca, the Andrew Niccol story starring Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law. Stephen saw it at the Cinema and considers it a Hidden Gem. Does Trev agree?
Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here for a bonus movie retrospective. This time they're talking about The Truman Show for its 25th anniversary. The Truman Show is a psychological satire directed by Peter Weir and written by Andrew Niccol. It opened in theaters on June 5, 1998. In the film, Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) is the unwitting star of the world's most popular reality show. Over the course of the story, Truman grows increasingly suspicious and tries to escape his home island. Running the show is show creator Christof (Ed Harris). Other characters include Truman's wife Meryl (Laura Linney), his long-lost flame Sylvia (Natascha McElhone), and his best friend Marlon (Noah Emmerich). The Truman Show was a critical and box office hit. It was nominated at the Oscars for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor for Ed Harris. Hey there listeners!!! We are back with artist Juan Escobedo as we wade through this sci-fi movie Gattaca, written and directed by Andrew Niccol, questioning the morality of DNA manipulation staring VERY pretty people. This dystopian futurist vision with Valid and In-Vaid members of society predetermined by their genetic make-up provides a springboard to current issues of discrimination, institutional hierarchies, and tokenism. So won't you provide us with a sample of your DNA so that we can have it...Oh...I'm sorry, the wind caught it... Então dê play neste episódio repleto de horror existencial e lembre-se: in case i don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening and good night! On this episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast, Erik and Joe take a look at the 2005 film "Lord of War" staring Nicolas Cage, Jared Leto, Bridget Moynahan, Ian Holm, and Ethan Hawke. Written and directed by Andrew Niccol, "Lord of War" is a semi-true story of one of the world's most infamous arms dealers in the 1980s through early 2000s. While Cage's character of Yuri Olav is fictional, the character - and many characters in the film - are based on real individuals (Olav is based on real-life "Merchant of Death" Viktor Bout). An interesting, and sadly still topical film and a unique role for Cage in this particular time in his career, but does Lord of War still hold up in 2023? Check out the Video Junkyard Podcast to find out!
Welcome to 2023! In 1997, Andrew Niccol made his directorial debut with Gattaca, a sci-fi dystopia about genetic engineering. Michael Nyman's gorgeous, didactic score portrays the tension between the mathematical precision of the world the characters inhabit, and the aspirations which drive them ever upward. And for Gabriel Urbina (Wolf 359, Unseen), it was the score that first made him realize what film scores could accomplish. My Big Score was created, hosted, and edited by Christopher Dole. All piano music performed by Christopher Dole. The main theme was composed by Erik Jourgensen. Show artwork by Chandler Candela. Our social media consultant is Ellie Warren. This series is produced in Los Angeles County on the ancestral lands of the Tongva, Tatavium, and Chumash. You can find our website at mybigscore.transistor.fm and on Twitter at @MyBigScorePod.
As 1997 comes to an end, Matt Peterson, Nate Meyers, and Bryan Piras take a look back at Andrew Niccol's dystopian sci-fi film “Gattaca” and wonder if they can get some genetic modifications in their middle age.

In Time In Time is a 2011 American science fiction action film written, directed and produced by Andrew Niccol. Amanda Seyfried and Justin Timberlake star as inhabitants of a society which uses time from one's lifespan as its primary currency, with each individual possessing a clock on their arm that counts down how long they have to live. Cillian Murphy, Vincent Kartheiser, Olivia Wilde, Matt Bomer, Johnny Galecki, and Alex Pettyfer also star. The Space Brains.dig deep into what it means to have time, money and how Niccol has used colour and pacing to provoke these philosophical thoughts. Science-wise we discuss a 2016 study that demonstrated the link between income and life expectancy. Hint: it's good to be rich. CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of suicide and depiction of suicide, eugenics, disability. This week we discuss a film that honestly deserves a better status than cult classic. The sheer ingenuity and thoughtfulness baked into a science fiction parable about eugenics from 1997 is remarkable. Andrew Niccol has made some other great films along the way, but this stands apart as a finely crafted piece; not perfect, but not needing to be. And then you have truly great performances from three actors either on the verge or just coming into movie stardom, all with nuance and subtlety that makes this film age like fine wine. Make sure to scrub away any trace of who you are as we discuss Gattaca this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! The Deucecast chooses to pod smarter, not harder, this time as the word of the day is SCIENCE!! Whether "she blinded me" with it, or its "My project" or just WEIRD, today #TwitterlessDrEarl and Mikey and d$ talk about "Science Movies". How to define that? We ask our guest, the latest loser of #FanboySummer, "Chewbubba" Andy! The topic tonight is all about the science, but first the crew takes on the Denzel Game for the first time in a while... a little chit-chat with Andy to find out who he is and what he's about... Then tackling the broad spectrum of "Science Movies" (which is different than "Sci-Fi Movies"), the guys give their picks of their favorite movies about Science, Technology, Mathematics and more. We'll discuss the career of Andrew Niccol... dunking on Math teachers... Harland Williams whereabouts... Apollo films... Tesla v Westinghouse... storm chasers... life on Mars... the vision that is Jennifer Connelly... And more mentions of Jacqueline Bisset than all previous episodes combined... Apollo 11 (Hulu) Apollo 13 (for rental) Awakenings (Netflix) A Beautiful Mind (Peacock Premium) Contagion (Netflix; HBO Max) The Current War (for rental) Gattaca (Netflix) The Imitation Game (Netflix) Jurassic Park (HBO Max) The Manhattan Project (for rental) The Martian (for rental) Moneyball (Hulu) Real Genius (Starz) Rocketman (for rental) Se7en (Netflix) Short Circuit (Showtime) Something the Lord Made (HBO Max)

This week Jeff makes Dave & John re-watch 90s Sci-Fi thriller (?) Gattaca since he had never seen it! Lots of beer drinking, too. We had consumed a bunch before we even started recording. Anyway, it's on Netflix and it gave us both Jude Law and Maya Hawke, plus it's so 90s. What a premise! Ethan Hawke pretends to be Jude Law so that he can maybe go to space some day. There's something about swimming against his brother, I think the line "I never saved anything for the swim back" that, you, didn't quite have the sentimental impact as "They called me Mr. Glass!", or something. Hell of a cast. Andrew Niccol wrote/directed. Cast/Creatives: Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, with Jude Law, Loren Dean, Ernest Borgnine, Gore Vidal, Blair Underwood, Tony Shalhoub, Maya Rudolph, and Alan Arkin, Sławomir Idziak, Michael Nyman, Danny DeVito produced through Jersey Films. This week, we watch we kick off our accidental Andrew Niccol season with In Time, a film with a premise so stupid that Chris' brain momentarily breaks, any attempt at a plot breakdown descends into time related madness, and Alex gradually realises this film is not as good as he maybe thought because he's written another hour of material in his own head. Also, Chris has plans for a dark harem, Alex goes mad and throws his mic, and Sam really wants to know where time comes from. It's a wild episode. Next week, S1M0N3! Get in touch! Visit the Website! We return after an unexpected hiatus with Next, in which Nicolas Cage plays himself, or maybe a clairvoyant magician who seems to share a lot of interests with Mr. Cage. Join us as we try and work out if this film actually has a villain, discuss the worst FBI agent in the history of cinema, and try and work out what on earth this film's gimmick actually is supposed to be. BAYHEM REIGNS we're seguing into post-apocalyptic movies for the second half of our ROTTEN APOCALYPSE series, beginning with two sleek dystopian chase thrillers starring a pair of beautiful white people on the run. first up, it's the return of Michael Bay with his oft-forgotten 2005 sci-fi bomb "The Island" starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson as a pair of clones on the run from an organ harvesting agency in the not-so-distant past/future of 2019. after that, we're heading to the year 2199 for the Andrew Niccol-helmed take on futuristic class warfare with "In Time" starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfreid. film critic Logan Kenny joins us for the second half of the episode to recount how "In Time" radicalized him at 10 years old and turned him into a lifelong communist. so join us as we discuss radicalization by Niccol, Ewan McGregor joining the elite 3-timers club on the podcast, Justin Timberlake's limitations as an actor Michael Bay's insider knowledge of the organ black market, the inherent sliminess of Alex Pettifyer, and the 2000 romcom "Down to You" starring Freddie Prinze, Jr., Julia Stiles and Ashton Kutcher as "Jim Morrison". you can find Logan on Twitter @logankenny1 and read his unexpected 5-star reviews on Letterboxd.

On this week's episode, the 2022 Listener Request Month continues with a discussion around Andrew Niccol's Gattaca follow-up, S1m0ne! And are we to believe that Al Pacino's character becomes a CGI master all on his own in less than a year? PLUS: Pacino runs some lines from Home Alone! S1m0ne stars Al Pacino, Catherine Keener, Rachel Roberts, Winona Ryder, Jay Mohr, Evan Rachel Wood, and Elias Koteas; directed by Andrew Niccol.
