“Head of the Class” is a sitcom that aired from 1986 to 1991 on ABC. The show centers around a group of academically gifted students, and their laid-back history teacher, Charlie Moore (played by Howard Hesseman). Charlie's unconventional teaching methods and his efforts to show the students that there's more to life than just academics form the crux of the series. “Head of the Class” received positive reception during its run, particularly for its unique premise focusing on exceptional students, which was a departure from the typical high school sitcoms of the time. The show spawned a spin-off series "Billy" and had a 2021 Reboot. Will the S1E1 boys, a group of non intellectual prodigies enjoy this one? Listen as they deep dive the show's pilot episode. 8 more 70's movie reviews in the can. Starting things off today with (Billy Jack 1971). This is a sequel to a 1967 film called Born Losers, and it is just out of our reach for us. Here is a movie written by the 2 stars in the film and directed by BJ himself. Seems like a real labor of love, and it's pretty great and we'll tell ya'll about it very shortly, or we already are and your reading while your listening, how can you do that? Before we move on BJ is a film about a safe haven and school for outcasts and people of color, where close minded murderous Hicks are just outside the border, waiting to be racist and horrible to the max, I do hope someone has amazing fighting skills hmmm. One more thing, Howard Hesseman……..Johnny Flippin Fever from WKRP is HERE in this film, however, we suck and said it was Venus Flytrap, sorry bout that  icky rookie mistake, Venus was played by the amazing Tim Reid and he is not in this film. Moving on to (Duck, you sucker 1971) Here we have the awful man who will soon have no friends from Happy birthday Wanda June (Rod Steiger), and the gross reporter guy from Goldengirl, (James Coburn), starring in this film about how to become heroes in the Mexican revolution. Hmmmmmm, your gonna need an explosives expert. Next up is (The Outside Man 1972) which stars a focused French guy, the guy that wants the beaches closed and doesn't care about yer concession sales,  the amazing Ann flippin Margaret, and Angie (dressed to kill) Dickinson. Here is a movie with the idea of action, with out a lot of it, 70's style.  You get to see massive amounts of driving round L.A. You can see the old Venice amusement pier, some of the weird street characters, and one thing we wanted to mention but spaced it, was the appearance of public electric shaver in a bathroom, which seems unsanitary, hey, I gots time let's look it up….Time has passed, and the internet has failed me, or perhaps my use of it has failed. (Badge 373 1973)  Verna Bloom, star of a western we all liked, The Hired Hand, is here with Robert Duvall, Henry Darrow, and Radical 60's n 70's activist and Young Lord Felipe Luciano. Here we have some competing actors and the inspirational Felipe, kinda stuck in some budget cop movie, based on the guy whose budget cop stories also inspired the French connection character of Popeye D. Onward we strut to the light and uplifting Ingmar Bergman classic (Scenes from a Marriage 1974), almost too heavy to get into, but I don't really have to, I'll  just skim that surface for you and move on. You've got amazing acting, directing, and cinematography, a good script etc. I wonder what could ever go wrong with a film focused on and icky relationship, through the years. He is horrid to the max, and it is worthwhile to examine relationships and the social norms and conditioning that live inside them. Gosh it was just difficult for your beloved D.U.I. crew to get through. Come with us now to 1975 with (Rancho Deluxe). Rancho Deluxe, is the Slim Pickens holy grail that I didn't even know I was looking for. Now, you have other stuff goin on here, like  Starman (Jeff Bridges) and the dad from Serial Mom (Sam Waterson) are trying to pay rent and piss off a bull baron guy, although Bridges is slumming it, so to speak. Also serial mom's dad's Dad is played by Joe Spinell and he steals the dang show for the scene he's in. Lot's of good talent here, but is it good, or great, listen to find out? Second to last today we review (Outlaw Josey Wales 1976) a puzzling film directed by Clint Eastwood starring Sondra Locke, and Chief mother flippin Dan George, that's it. Finally today we enjoy (Corevette Summer 1978) “It's not even his car, it belongs to the school, It's not even your car!!” This film has Mary Jo Shively from designing woman, and Luke Skywalker from Star Wars  confronting the guy from Laser Blast to return the schools hot rod, back to the school. Next George details the David O. Selznick version of “A Star is Born” (1937) starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, and directed by William A. Wellman.  This film has been in desperate need of restoration and this new blu-ray returns it to the proper sound and visual it deserves.  And we wrap up the month with a review of the classic TV show "Head of the Class" season 4 on DVD, starring the late Howard Hesseman.  Kevin Costner rules April with Blu-ray releases of two films released in 1985.  The first is "American Flyers," followed by the cult favorite "Fandango." For May, George reviews the Blu-ray of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1941) starring Spencer Tracy in both roles, and co-starring Ingrid Bergman and Lana Turner.  Next is "The Carey Treatment" (1972) starring James Coburn and Jennifer O'Neill.  And also in May is season 5 of the hit TV show "Lucifer," on Blu-ray.  We wrap up the podcast with a discussion on the recent 4K release of "Singin' In the Rain" and what it could mean for future 4K releases of Warner Bros classics.

For reasons you'll have to listen to in the "Prolog" episode, all streaming versions of the original "WKRP in Cincinnati" have had the original music cues removed. Generic music beds and stings were used in place of the original music for the syndicated version of the series. The Bums are back for Episode 0046 after Rocky's back-to-back boondoggle (WI and MI respectively); the stage is set, the t-shirts are printed, the banners are hung, the ladies of the evening are called — it's Super Bowl preview time; a breeze by of who Bears GM, Ryan Poles, picks for his field generals; Tom F. Brady puts his legacy out to pasture (with or without cow pies, you decide); the NFL head coaching hiring circuit is white hot (whiter than Lovie Smith's beard); The Washington Football Team's new moniker sucks a bag of you know whats; Rocky Wirtz is defiant in his corruption and despicable behavior, as the BlackEyeHawks remain in the penalty box; NCCA hijinks ensue; former NFL lineman Greg Robinson had better call Saul; before the bums close with a discussion around how NBA Celtic Enis Freedom Kantor gets Kaepernicked. The back nine kicks off with another infamous beer review, with a look see into ‘Hexe Vibraniyum' (ABV 6%) from Chicago's own Empirical Brewing, a coffee forward brown ale with some pleasant surprises;  the bums bid WKR.I.P. to Howard Hesseman, aka as Dr. Johnny Fever from the popular 70s/80s sitcom; things get dark AF as Paddy recounts the shocking carnage in the wake of USC's Dr. Geroge Tyndall systemic abuse; Rocky reviews Kohler, WI's American Club and Kohler Spa (and discovers an absolute gem in Trattoria Stefano — upscale Southern Italian in nearby Sheboygan, WI) and also recounts the majesty that is the Pere Marquette river in the dead of winter, aka ‘The Shiver on the River'; before the bums close with a discussion around the responsibility of media giants. Recorded on February 10th, 2022 at B.O.M.'s global headquarters ‘East Bunker' in Chicago, IL USA.

Howard Hesseman/Dr. Johnny Fever Tribute - "The Dr. Johnny Fever Aircheck"

WKRP-Cast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 10, 2022 45:00

HEY, FELLOW BABIES!! Welcome to a Special Release from the WKRP-Cast!In order to improve your performance as a deejay, it was important to hear yourself on the air. The process of recording yourself and listening back to your show was called doing an "air check." Usually, a Program Director would require on-air staff to air-check themselves anywhere from once a week to once a month. After a jock has air-checked their show, they would sit down with the PD and critique the content. They might discuss anything from what headlines or news bits the talent selected as talk topics to presentation to attitude to verbal tics. For instance, Johnny says "alright" an awful lot. A good PD would point something like that out and have him work on being aware of it and reducing how many times he says it.Since an air-check is about the deejay, there was no need for a PD to sit through a lot of music. They only wanted to hear the performer's bits and intros. This is where the "skimmer" or "air check machine" came into play. A skimmer was a cassette deck in the control room taking a feed from the program 'out' of the board. Everything coming off the board went through the skimmer. The on-off switch for the skimmer was connected to the board mic switch. When the deejay turned on the mic, the skimmer started recording. Whatever was happening at the moment the mic was turned on would be captured on the skim tape. It might be the end of a song, the last few words of a spot, the final sign-off from a newscast, etc. The skimmer would then record whatever the deejay says while the mic is on. As soon as the deejay turned the mic off, the skimmer would stop. A deejay doesn't normally turn the mic off immediately after they stop talking. This meant the skimmer might capture the first few bars of the next song or a few words of the first spot played in the next stop set. At the end of a shift, the skim tape would only contain whatever the deejay had said throughout the four or five hours of their show. A lot of deejays would keep these air-check tapes, especially when they had a good shift. Air-check tapes are not only a great tool for the Program Director to use, they are also a fantastic tool for a deejay to use to land another job.We decided to create Dr. Johnny Fever's air-check. This is a collection of only those things Johnny has said OVER THE AIR while on WKRP. It's edited the same way an air-check or skim tape would have sounded in the 1980s, with no fades and beep tones between segments. We've pulled every Johnny talk bit from Pilot Part One all the way through to "Simple Little Wedding." Once we've completed the series, we will add any additional segments Johnny might do in Episodes 66-90. Enjoy this WKRP-Cast Tribute to the Legendary Howard Hesseman and his incredible creation: Dr. Johnny Fever.
