The year of the stitch up has had a couple of misfires for Dave's picks, with Chris unfortunately declaring Cloud City's for both sword and sorcery adventures - Gor and The Barbarians. So this is the time to roll out the cult classic sci-fi movie from 1984, Trancers.Trancers was a low-budget sci-fi film produced by Charles Band's Empire Pictures, a company known for its B-movie output during the 1980s. Directed by Charles Band and written by Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo, the film was conceived as a time-traveling noir with a futuristic twist, inspired by Blade Runner and classic detective stories. The production had limited financial resources, so the filmmakers cleverly set much of the movie in present-day Los Angeles rather than the distant future, allowing them to save on costly futuristic sets and effects. The film starred Tim Thomerson as the grizzled, time-traveling cop Jack Deth and a young Helen Hunt in one of her early roles. Despite its modest budget, Trancers managed to craft a unique cyberpunk atmosphere using creative cinematography and neon-lit cityscapes.Empire Pictures, known for churning out cult classics, ensured the movie had a quick and efficient production, utilizing familiar locations and a mix of practical effects to bring its sci-fi elements to life. The film's pulpy, hard-boiled dialogue and time-travel premise helped it stand out in the crowded landscape of low-budget sci-fi, leading to a small but dedicated cult following. Trancers performed well enough on the home video market to spawn multiple sequels, solidifying its place in the annals of ‘80s cult cinema. The movie's mix of noir and sci-fi influences, along with Thomerson's performance, kept it alive long after its initial release, proving that even a low-budget indie film could leave a lasting impact on the genre. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where the future is on the brink of collapse, one man must travel back in time to stop an unstoppable evil. Jack Deth is a hard-nosed cop on the hunt for Martin Whistler, a madman who turns people into mindless, murderous Trancers. But when Whistler escapes to 1985, Deth is forced to follow, leaping into the body of his own ancestor. With the help of a fiery young woman, Leena, he'll have to fight his way through an army of mind-controlled killers, stop Whistler, and save the future… before time runs out!thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Stuart Gordon's post-apocalyptic sci-fi featuring gladiatorial battles between giant mechs has to be one of Empire Pictures' most instantly recognisable titles, sitting proudly on video rental stores worldwide. Starring Gary Graham and Anne-Marie Johnson as the brave robot jockeys and Paul Koslo as their ruthless enemy, Robot Jox could be the brightest and breeziest dystopian action movie ever made. It was also one of the most ambitious film Charles Band's mini-major studio ever attempted, and may have precipitated the fall of his Empire! But does it live up to our childhood memories? Bring Me The Axe! Horror Podcast

This week Bryan and Dave take a look at John Carl Buechler's swing-and-a-miss for the Charles Band dynasty, Troll. It's supposed to be filled with whimsy, adventure, and high-fantasy but is instead filled with crappy rubber monsters and cringe-inducing performances by actors tenured enough to know better by this point. Noah Hathaway casually throws away any goodwill he earned with his portrayal of Atreyu in The Neverending Story. Michael Moriarty seems to have no idea what he's even doing there. It's all a jumbled mess that somehow managed to be a smash-hit at the box office for Empire Pictures and a video rental gem of the 1980's. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bring-me-the-axe/message

Two years in one episode! Well, it really does make sense. You'll see.First, director Stuart Gordon brings us some morbid, deadpan humor, based on the work of H. P. Lovecraft.  And let me tell you, Jeffrey Combs is absolute perfection as Herbert West. Who would have thought that bringing corpses, and decapitated heads, back to life, would be so amusing? And how about that green color of the re-agent serum? Can I paint a room that color, please? Oh, yeah. We're talking about Re-Animator (1985), here. Then from there, Stuart Gordon is back! And so is H.P. Lovecraft! And Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton from Re-Animator! It's like a family reunion with all of your favorites. But they've brought along the resonator. A device that stimulates the pineal gland. To the point where it just might burst out of the forehead of someone who has had a little too much stimulation. And let me tell you something else, it's not a pretty sight. It's like something, From Beyond (1986)!And of course, it wouldn't be the Summer of the 80s without Common Craig's Top 5 horrors from 1985 and 1986!

We kick off #AUGHOST with 1987's PRISON.  Directed by Renny Harlin (CLIFFHANGER, THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT) and written HALLOWEEN producer Irwin Yablans, PRISON is a curious partnership between New World Pictures and Empire Pictures.  And who's the beneficiary of this partnership?  We all are.   Don't let the title fool you.  The Prison in PRISON offers loose rules, plenty of yard time, and a ghost that's out for revenge.  In this prison, you're locked up with an ensemble cast including Chelsea Field (or Mrs. Bakula according to Marc) from BIRDS 2: LANDS END, Lane Smith (SON-IN-LAW) and some guy named Viggo Mortenson.  He didn't do a whole lot outside of this movie but that doesn't stop Erica from creating a new fan club called the Viggans (pronounced, "vegans").  The meals are exceptional and they have open mic night.    PRISON feels like it could have been an entry into the Hellraiser franchise or a Pauly Shore vehicle while also carving it's own path.  Spoiler, we spend a lot of time talking about Pauly Shore.

The Man, The Myth, The Legend: Charles Band Is The Celebrated King of B Horror MoviesIn the world of horror, there are a handful of great showmen whose influence has had such an impact on the world of genre film that they changed the way horror films were made. These are people whose innovation, creativity, business acumen and courage have given of us some of the most influential and iconic genre movies of all time. People who see every obstacle as just another opportunity to show that they will not take “no” for an answer when it comes to getting their vision out in the world. I'm talking about people like Roger Corman, Robert Shaye and Lloyd Kaufman. For us at SYG, and many other fans of the weird and fantastic, there is really only one man who reigns supreme. The King of gonzo filmmaking. The legendary Charles Band. And when we say legendary, it's not an exaggeration. Charles Band's insanely prolific output of horror and sci-fi films is beyond comprehension. Many of them made on a shoestring budget. Many of them great. Most of them weird. All of them, and we're talking nearly 400 films, willed into existence by a man whose infectious positivity and otherworldly talent for creating something that most would think couldn't be done.Whether through his company Empire Pictures, who made classics like Ghoulies, Robot Jox and Trancers, or Full Moon Entertainment - who in the 90's gave us genre classics like the Puppet Master series, Subspecies, Pit and the Pendulum and Demonic Toys - Charles Band continues to be the ultimate showman to this day.Charles and host Kevin Lane talk about his early days on set with his father, Albert Band, how the world of independent genre filmmaking has changed since he began, his love of bringing to life inanimate objects, and what the future holds in store for Full Moon.Kevin adores Charles Band. When he first discovered Full Moon in the early 90's, it was a game changer for him. At the end of every Full Moon movie there was a "making of" segment where Charlie would tell you what was going on with Full Moon and then we'd get to see interviews with the filmmakers and on-set footage of the movies being made. This is WAY before DVD and the idea of special features being a part of your home video experience. Videozone became Kevin's film school and he's sometimes wonder if he would have pursued a career in film if it wasn't for Charles Band giving him that window into the process. This episode is especially exciting as we have permission from the great Richard Band for the special music cues we've used. You'll notice that we've used a modernized version of the classic Puppet Master theme that Richard did for the film “Puppet Master: Axis Termination over Kevin's intro to the episode. We've used the Full Moon's Video Zone theme to transition from Kevin's intro into into the conversation. Videozone was a “making of“ featurette included at the end of all Full Moon movies released during the Paramount eta (early 90's)We've also added the “Full Moon vs Full Moon” main theme from Charles Band‘s hit 1985 film “Ghoulies” which was a surprise success at the box office and has an incredibly famous poster. The film was made under Charles' company Empire Pictures which was a precursor to Full Moon.As always, Charles Band was way ahead of his time. Okay dudes, it is with great pleasure that we present to you the man himself, Charles Band.Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. This week, we revisit the world of Empire Pictures with the 1986 urban reincarnation flick - Necropolis! When a smoking hot biker-babe (LeAnne Baker) - straight out of the 17th Century - visits 1980s New York, it's up to a drug counselor/reverend, an NPR reporter, and a cop to defeat her. Will they succeed, or will the powers of mind control and ecto-lactation win control of the Necropolis? On this episode: multiple gratuitous dance sequences, New York accents in 1600s "New Amsterdam", placebo-withdrawals, prostitute turf-wars, a sassy medical examiner, the multi-life longevity of neck trauma, the Devil's ring, breast-feeding zombies, and spontaneous boob replication!

This week, it's Ghoul Summer... well, kind of... if you're here for the rape, nipple torture, war crimes and vomit-play, well, first maybe take a good look in the mirror and ask yourself "Why am I like this?", but also you'll probably be slightly disappointed this year as we're taking Ghoul Summer quite literally and doing movies about actual ghouls! Up first, Boris Karloff plays an Egyptologist on his death bed, but he possesses a sacred Egyptian artifact that may hold the key to immortality. However, he does eventually die and when he does, many people are interested in getting their hands of his artifacts. But Boris was right all along and returns from the grave as an undead fiend to exact his revenge in The Ghoul from 1933. Next, Ed Wood assembles his usual gang of weirdos for another low-budget, but enjoyable horror romp in Night of the Ghouls from 1959.And finally, a man and his girlfriend move into his childhood home, not knowing it was formerly a house of Satanic worship. When the man decides to dabble in the dark arts himself, he summons some terrifying little creatures in the Empire Pictures classic Ghoulies from 1985. All this plus Kevin supports local filmmakers, Parker takes in some fine art, a double dose of sad nerd news, beach-themed blu-rays and so much more. Recorded Friday December 18th & Saturday December 19th, 2020   Happy New Years, fans! That Horror Show Podcast is back and refreshed for 2021 and boy do we have a spectacular lineup for you. For this entire season, the dynamic duo Timothy Kazda and Chris Koenig are embarking on a retrospective of 80s horror and sci-fi movies produced by Empire Pictures! Originally founded in 1984 by that cinema huckster Charles Band, Empire cranked out some of the most off-beat genre films ever conceived until the studio's sad demise in 1988. And while Band would go off to form Full Moon Entertainment in the early 1990s with his company still going strong to this present day, the 80s era of Empire was an interesting and far more engaging time for Charlie's brand of exploitation entertainment. Therefore, for this January episode, we tackle the "The Alchemist" (1981, released in 1985) and "The Dungeonmaster" (1984)! How do these two films fare with your fine hosts? Tune in and find out!  #CharlesBand #EmpirePictures #TheAlchemist   #Tubi  #TheDungeonmaster #THSP #sepn

Established by producer and director Charles Band in 1986, Empire Pictures quickly became notorious for the horror-comedy classics made during its brief but legendary lifespan. With wild special effects, outrageous humour and over-the-top horror action Ghoulies, Troll and TerrorVision were three of Empire Pictures finest works, and each movie featured an unforgettable score by Charles' award-winning composer brother Richard Band. Now, these scores have been carefully remastered and are presented for the very first time on half-speed mastered, limited-edition 180g coloured vinyl in stunning packaging with liner notes from the composer. Ghoulies features the full uncut original soundtrack, available for the first time ever, and includes a bonus 7inch featuring Fela Johnson’s "Dancing with a Monster" and "Surrender" as heard in the movie. Troll features the complete soundtrack, and TerrorVision features the special director’s cut soundtrack. Each release is housed in a gatefold sleeve with full movie gallery, OBI belt, and random video store stickers, plus full liner notes by Band. We spoke with Richard Band via Zoom about his career and these amazing reissues.

CW: Rape, Suicide, Miscarriage It's all haunted dolls on this week of Pod Sematary! First up is the 1989 Full Moon classic, Puppetmaster! Or is it Puppet Master? THE Puppetmaster? Oh, don't worry, we solve this one definitively. This movie is a poorly-paced and edited mess, but we love it. Let us tell you why. Then on to the SEO Nightmare itself: 2016's The Boy. It's a movie full of great ideas that don't taste great together, plus fake jump scares and a failing visual motif about being watched. Find out what makes Chris ask, "Is Brahms possessed by a worm from Hell?" You know what, maybe just watch House of the Devil instead. Plus: --We decide once and for all if American Psycho counts as a horror movie --Kelsey tells us how she really feels about Cannibal Holocaust --We discuss if one can ever truly be friends with people who like Torture Porn. --And so many Ruperts! Greetings creepazoids, and welcome back to Horror Business, the podcast that doesn’t feel pity, it doesn’t feel remorse, it can’t be reasoned with, and it will not stop until you are as just as much an elitist asshole about horror movie as we are. Thank you as always for checking us out and we have got one heck of an episode for you guys. First and foremost we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screenprinting company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a tshirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Or…whatever else you need printed. So head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Also a huge thanks to friend of the podcast Albert Martin of the Lehigh Valley Horror Facebook group for his unflagging support of this podcast. Without you guys, we are nothing. Thanks! This episode we take a look at two films from Charles Band’s Full Moon Pictures, world renowned for their ability to take a B movie approach and make quality films sometimes. The two films we discuss are 1991’s Subspecies and 1994’s Seed People. We begin by giving a shout out to Chris and LVAC, and then talking about what we’ve seen recently. We talk about the recent Exhumed Films event in Philadelphia we attended, a screening of Killer Klowns From Outer Space and The Deadly Spawn to benefit noted NJ horror aficionado James Harris. We discuss both films and our familiarity with them and James’ recent struggles with cancer. We then briefly talk about Liam’s upcoming fatherhood (he’ll be a dad by the time you hear this) and Liam’s accomplishments (or failures) with the Letterboxd 2017 Cult Movie Challenge. There’s miscellaneous small talk that isn’t reeeally worth detailing, Liam talks about the series ‘Crazy Head’, and Justin makes several weird accusations about D.B. Sweeney and Travis Walton. We discuss how originally this episode was supposed to be an “evil alien” episode on Without Warning and Xtro but because those movies are apparently rare as fuck we skipped on it, and then move on to the actual films of this episode. We give a brief background on Full Moon Productions and Charles Band in general (the varied lineup of the roster, the transition from Empire Pictures, the lack of Barbara Crampton on the Full Moon roster, etc) with a declaration that Empire Pictures is better than Full Moon because no Full Moon film can top From Beyond (note: this is a fact). A brief plot outline of Subspecies is given, and from there we generally rip the movie apart for it’s horrible acting, somehow even more horrible special effects, Angus Scrimm’s puzzling role in this film. Justin mistakenly claims Brad Dourif was in The Gate (it was Stephen Dorff) and then argues with Liam that the ‘Subspecies’ in the title are actually the terrible little monsters that serve no purpose in the movie (I, Justin, am later proven right). There’s more criticism of everything about this movie, ranging from a cloudy plot, excessive vampire drooling, a McGuffin that looks like a butt plug but instead some kind of vampire heirloom, the inability of this movie to properly capture what time period it’s supposed to take place, the uneven tone of the film, and more complaining about the special effects. Extra sharp venom is hurled at the demons in the movie, which Liam rightfully compares to a shitty video game. The films being shot on location in Romania is briefly praised, but before we get too comfortable giving it credit we go back to trashing the way the characters dress. More halfhearted praise is given to the lead actress but the character of Stefan is trashed for being lackadaisical and boring, and then the character of Radu is ripped apart for being horribly non-intimidating and goofy. A brief retelling of the near screaming match we got into over vampire lore occ...

Kicking off his career as a lowly production assistant under Roger Corman, Dave DeCoteau went on to helm dozens of films for Full Moon and its offshoot Torchlight Pictures throughout the 1980's and 1990's before establishing his own homoerotically oriented Rapid Heart Pictures. Charles Band continued his father's theatrical tradition, enlisting his brother for soundtrack composition and establishing first his own Charles Band Productions, then the even more successful Empire Pictures and finally the label he's best known for, Full Moon! With a history of highly entertaining films produced on a low budget but with aesthetic values and quirky concepts that belie their financial origins, Band produced and directed over a hundred films between his late 70's debut and the early millenium, and remains active in more of a niche, rather un-Full Moonlike market to this day. Join us as we talk the rise and fall of Charles Band, Empire and Full Moon, plus his most consistent (and consistently entertaining) contributor, Dave DeCoteau! Phantom Troublemaker talks to Daniel Griffith of Ballyhoo Motion Pictures about his newest project, a documentary on Empire Pictures, the revolutionary movie studio that produced such genre classics as Re-Animator, Ghoulies, TerrorVision, Zone Troopers, and many more! On October 14th, Daniel launched a monstrous Kickstarter Campaign to complete the official feature documentary about the rise and fall of Empire Pictures. This exciting production, entitled Celluloid Wizards in the Video Wasteland: The Saga of Empire Pictures, follows the life of producer Charles Band (The Puppet Master series) leading up to the creation of the most ambitious B-movie studio of the 1980's. While other independent film companies were targeting the growing home video market, Band was releasing low-budget horror and fantasy features to drive-ins and multiplexes around the world.   The thrilling saga of Empire Pictures will be told through the eyes of the innovative team of filmmakers and film professionals who worked together to reinvent and reinvigorate the independent film industry in the 1980s. Thus far, Daniel has interviewed more than 40 individuals to tell this epic story, including director Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator, Robot Jox), director/effect artist John Carl Buechler (Troll), editor/director Ted Nicolaou (TerrorVision), actress Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator), actor Richard Moll (Metalstorm, The Dungeonmaster), and director/producer Charles Band. He has also unearthed over 500 behind the scenes photographs, as well as 20 hours of rare archival video footage. Visit the official Empire Pictures website for more details!  Daniel is inviting you to JOIN THE ADVENTURE and help bring this electrifying story to life. With this Kickstarter Campaign, he hopes to raise $25,000 to cover all the final production and post-production expenses. This includes filming additional interviews, digitally transferring rare 35mm film elements and trailers, covering any legal fees, and contracting award-winning illustrator Paul Shipper to create an original theatrical one-sheet campaign for the documentary. The funds will also be used to commission an original film score by renowned Empire Pictures composer Richard Band.  Listen in as Phantom and Daniel discuss the impact that Empire had on their lives and taste in movies, as well as the process of creating documentaries and special features! Be sure to join the new Needless Things Podcast Facebook Group and get in on the conversation for this week’s episode!
