Billy Crystal was on a big hot streak in the late '80s and early '90s, topped by this comedy-western blockbuster. Ron Underwood directed City Slickers and did a terrific job balancing the laughs with all the mid-life crises of the 3 main characters. It's a comedy with some sting. What this film does best is connect with middle-aged men who are going through the things that Crystal, Bruno Kirby and Daniel Stern are. Jack Palance though plays a man who knows about that "one thing"...and he was the one who won an Oscar. So ride horses, rope cows and connect with your best buddies on a cattle drive as the 631st edition of Have You Ever Seen yahoos it up for City Slickers. New supporter Gareth has chosen a cult classic comedy horror movie this week with 1990's Tremors. Tremors was a collaborative effort between director Ron Underwood, producer Gail Katz, and writers S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock, who crafted a unique blend of science fiction, horror, and comedy. Filming took place primarily in the arid landscapes of the California desert, specifically in the small town of Lone Pine, which provided the perfect backdrop for the film's fictional setting of Perfection, Nevada. The production team faced the challenge of creating realistic, underground monsters known as Graboids, which required innovative practical effects. The creature designs were brought to life by the visual effects team led by Amalgamated Dynamics, who used a combination of animatronics and puppetry to create the menacing and memorable Graboids. Despite a modest budget, Tremors benefited from a talented cast that included Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, and Reba McEntire, whose performances helped elevate the film's quirky humor and charm. The filmmakers strived to balance suspenseful moments with comedic relief, making the movie appealing to a wide audience. Upon its release, Tremors received positive reviews for its clever writing, engaging characters, and practical effects, which set it apart from typical creature features of the era. Though initially modest in box office success, it garnered a strong cult following over the years, leading to several sequels and solidifying its status as a beloved classic in the genre. As local handymen Val and Earl team up with a motley crew of townsfolk, including a seismologist and a survivalist couple, they must band together to outsmart and survive these deadly creatures determined to eliminate anyone who ventures above ground. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

S.S. Wilson, the screenwriter of such films as Tremors and Short Circuit, has just finished his second novel Fraidy Cats. Wilson also wrote a book on special effects, stop-motion animation, PUPPETS, AND PEOPLE. In 1983 Wilson and Maddock sold their spec script SHORT CIRCUIT. Directed by John Badham, it was their first produced feature. In quick succession, they wrote SHORT CIRCUIT 2, BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED, GHOST DAD; and served as consultants on Steven Spielberg's animated THE LAND BEFORE TIME.In 1990 they sold another spec, TREMORS, on which they also served as producers. Directed by fellow USC alum Ron Underwood and starring Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Michael Gross, and Reba McEntire, the film became a revered cult classic, spawning three sequels and a TV series. Wilson and Maddock joined with Nancy Roberts (producer of all the Tremors sequels) and Ron Underwood to form Stampede Entertainment in 1992. The first Stampede project was HEART AND SOULS at Universal, starring Robert Downey, Jr.The TREMORS franchise grew with Wilson debuting as a director on TREMORS 2: AFTERSHOCKS for Universal Family Home Entertainment. During the same time period, he and Maddock wrote the green-light draft of Warner Bros. 1999 tent pole release WILD WILD WEST, starring Will Smith. In 2001 it was TREMORS 3: BACK TO PERFECTION, with Stampede partner Brent Maddock directing and Wilson handling the second unit. 2004 saw both the debut of TREMORS: THE SERIES for the Sci-Fi Network (Wilson co-created and co-executive produced with Maddock and Roberts) and TREMORS 4: THE LEGEND BEGINS, with Wilson again at the helm.In addition to screenwriting, Wilson is branching out into fiction. One of our Patreons nominated Eddie Murphy's notorious 2003 sci-fi action 'comedy' The Adventures of Pluto Nash for this episode, which on paper should have been promising. Its star was coming off a string of family-friendly comedies like The Nutty Professor, Dr. Dolittle and Shrek. Its supporting cast includes Randy Quaid, Rosario Dawson, Joe Pantoliano, Jay Mohr, Pam Grier and John Cleese. It's directed by quirky action/comedy wunderkind Ron Underwood of Tremors fame and has a budget north of $100 million. What could possibly go wrong?! A lot, it turns out. Quite a lot. But despite being the biggest box office flop of all time when it was released, it hasn't emerged as either a reclaimed cult classic or a so-bad-it's-good guilty pleasure... it's been largely forgotten. So, let's take a look at this curio and decide whether we're over the moon with it... or hitting the abort button before it causes collateral damage! In this popular thriller franchise starter (directed by Ron Underwood and starring Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Finn Carter, Michael Gross, and Riba McEntire), the locals of a small southwestern town discover giant monstrous worm-like creatures (dubbed "graboids") rooting through the ground beneath their feet...and they are hungry! While "Tremors" wasn't a huge hit in the theaters, it spawned a seven-film (direct-to-video) franchise and a short-lived series. So how does the first film hold up? Check out "Tremors" on TubiTV and then join us for the discussion on the Video Junkyard Podcast!

Tremors movie review from the Salty Nerds has them debating on whether or not this movie is an underrated classic, or simply a fun monster movie that's gained cult status over the years. In Tremors (1990), Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, and Michael Gross (whose character Burt Gummer goes on to be the main character of the franchise) fight a bunch of underground graboids that have a hunger for human flesh and really, really good ears. This movie started the Tremors franchise and is directed by Ron Underwood with a screenplay from Short Circuit scribes S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock. It's an unusual monster movie that has just the right amount of campy terror and tension. Joining the Salty Nerds for their review is none other than Stargate Atlantis actor David Hewlett, who's also a big fan of this movie! Jeff & Kim review Tremors from 1990. Bonus review: Crossroads from 1986. Tremors is a 1990 American western-themed monster horror comedy film directed by Ron Underwood, produced by Brent Maddock, and S. S. Wilson, and written by Maddock, Wilson, and Underwood. Tremors was released by Universal Pictures and stars Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Finn Carter, Michael Gross, and Reba McEntire. In the film, handymen Val McKee (Bacon) and Earl Bassett (Ward) try to skip the small desert town of Perfection, Nevada, tired of their dull lives. However, they happen upon a series of mysterious deaths and a concerned seismologist Rhonda (Carter) studying unnatural readings below the ground. With the help of eccentric survivalist couple Burt and Heather Gummer (Gross and McEntire), the group fights for survival against giant, prehistoric, worm-like monsters hungry for human flesh.
