In 1997, a group of white pro-life evangelical Christians in the United States created the nation's first embryo adoption program to “save” the thousands of frozen human embryos remaining from assisted reproduction procedures, which they contend are unborn children. While a small part of US fertility services, embryo adoption has played an outsized role in conservative politics, from high-profile battles over public investment in human embryonic stem cell research to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Based on six years of ethnographic research with embryo adoption staff and participants, Dr. Risa Cromer uncovers how embryo adoption advances ambitious political goals for expanding the influence of conservative Christian values and power. Conceiving Christian America: Embryo Adoption and Reproductive Politics (NYU Press, 2023) is the first book on embryo adoption tracing how this powerful social movement draws on white saviorist tropes in their aims to reconceive personhood, with drastic consequences for reproductive rights and justice. Documenting the practices, narratives, and beliefs that move embryos from freezers to uteruses, this book wields anthropological wariness as a tool for confronting the multiple tactics of the Christian Right. Timely and provocative, Conceiving Christian America presents a bold and nuanced examination of a family-making process focused on conceiving a Christian nation. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Now in its fifth decade, in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other reproduction technology have been the answer to many people's prayers for a family. However, this success has led to an excess of frozen embryos. Nearly 1.5 million babies are in a frozen orphanage. Many biological parents store embryos for further use. When parents have completed their families, they have to decide what to do with the frozen embryos. Donating them to an infertile couple is a popular option. Fertilized babies can be given for adoption through the National Embryo Donation Center. Leslie Hollowell shares her story of embryo adoption and the gift of her son Hudson. Meet Leia and Krison Burroughs, who are still in the midst of their family building journey. On today's show, Leia and Kriston tell Ali about how Kriston was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia when he was just a year old, and how they had no idea that the sickle cell drug, Hydroxyurea, would have a direct effect on his fertility. They also talk about microTESE surgery, the five hysteroscopies Leia had, and how the whole infertility journey has been hard on their marriage. They explain why they fired their OB, why they pivoted to embryo adoption, why they preferred doing that over donor sperm, and where they are now in the journey. Says Leia: "Did you know that 24% of men with Sickle Cell Anemia experience infertility due to the effects of the disease? Did you know that Sickle Cell Anemia affects about 100,000 people or that it occurs 1 in every 365 Black births in the U.S.?" Says Kriston, "Black folks need to start talking about our fertility treatments." Today, we sit down with Dr. Lauren Rubal, a Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility physician who focuses on fertility, recurrent miscarriage, painful, irregular, or heavy cycles, and menopause through an integrative lens. Instead of taking a bandaid, one-size-fits-all approach, Dr. Rubal views each patient as an entire person - body, mind, and soul - and works to address the root cause of reproductive disorders. But she wasn't always in this field. Dr. Rubal started her career in conventional medicine, and even practiced IVF. What prompted her to leave and start her own practice? How does Integrative Medicine differ from a more typical medical approach? What's so bad about IVF? Is there any such thing as "ethical" IVF? And why is hormonal birth control an ineffective treatment? We address all that and more. Rodney and Mary Leah are both attorneys in Alabama. They also serve on the board of Carrywell, a non-profit that helps couples walking through infertility, miscarriage and infant loss through groups and grants. They are passionate about helping families through grief and healing as couples explore other options into parenthood. This episode is so inspiring for those interested and wanting to learn more about how the embryo adoption process works.

After Michael and Naomi's unsuccessful attempts to start a family, they were led to a fertility clinic where they were diagnosed with male-factor infertility. They were told IVF would be the only real option. The couple experienced a lot of grief and started praying about what to do to become parents. They started to research their options when God opened the door to the National Embryo Donation Center in Knoxville, Tennessee!! This is where Michael and Naomi began their life-changing journey of becoming pregnant with two adopted boys through embryo adoption and the real twist of the story is the twins are NOT biologically related. What a MIRACLE STORY!!! In this episode, they want to encourage other couples facing infertility that what feels like God's “NO” in your life (infertility, loss, etc.) may actually be leading you face-to-face with His beautiful and perfect “YES” for your family.
Today, we discuss the evil practices of surrogacy and egg- and sperm-selling, as highlighted by a recent video of a same-sex male couple who adopted a newborn baby. NEDC President Dr. Jeffrey Keenan thinks February's landmark Alabama Supreme Court ruling could lead to a more life-affirming world for frozen embryos. But it won't happen without navigating some complex questions: Does “life begins at conception” include embryos? Are we willing to advocate for more ethical IVF? Can Christian believers unite on a life-affirming approach to fertility treatment? Dr. Keenan walks through some of these vital questions in this special episode of The Embryo Adoption Podcast. Today we discuss the fallout from the Alabama Supreme Court's ruling on IVF. Why are so many pro-life Republicans coming out in favor of IVF and pushing for fewer restrictions? How does IVF fail to uphold the dignity of human life? And is it even possible for someone to be pro-life and pro-IVF? Plus, we go through a recent article in the Washington Post that points to Christian women in support of IVF. What could this mean for the upcoming election and the suburban woman vote? Today we're starting off with the news of last week's Alabama Supreme Court ruling stating that frozen embryos outside the womb are indeed children. We cover what led to this decision and why it makes complete sense when looking at what frozen embryos actually are. We look at some of the backlash from those arguing that this ruling is the "end of IVF" and why we as pro-lifers need to adjust our thinking when it comes to surrogacy and IVF. Then, Fani Willis is the first female district attorney for Fulton County, Georgia, who came to fame when she launched an investigation against former President Donald Trump for attempting to overturn the election result in the state. Now, the case is in jeopardy because it was revealed that she had an affair with the lead prosecutor she hired for the case. We look at her embarrassing testimony as well the multiple churches that seem to be praising her to the point of sacrilege. --- Timecodes: (00:48) Merch & upcoming debate news (03:05) Alabama Supreme Court frozen embryo ruling (38:25) Fani Willis & church sermons --- Today's Sponsors: Patriot Mobile — go to PatriotMobile.com/ALLIE or call 972-PATRIOT and use promo code 'ALLIE' to get a free smart phone with activation! Today we're joined by Olivia Maurel, who was born via surrogacy but didn't find out until much later in life. Today, she speaks out against surrogacy in all forms, claiming that there is no such thing as good surrogacy, and she shares her story with us beginning with how she first found out the truth about her birth. She explains that she always intrinsically knew something was off, and when she came across surrogacy centers in Kentucky, where she was born, she put the pieces together. She shares her journey of struggling to find a maternal bond growing up, as well as the mental health issues she never knew were actually passed down from her biological mother and feeling that there is a price tag on her life. We discuss the many reasons one should be opposed to surrogacy, regardless of political affiliation, and explain why despite the trauma of her experience, God is using her to reveal the truth about this sensitive topic. Today we're talking about the trend going around on social media of people calling themselves "DINKs" ("Dual Income No Kids"), a nickname for married couples with no children. We look at the video that started the online discussion, which features a couple bragging about how they're able to go out to eat every night and never need to hire babysitters. We explain why this philosophy of glorifying childlessness is so hollow. We discuss how while there is nothing wrong with enjoying life before having children, the insistence that having children is a burden of some sort is so misguided. Then, we discuss a gay couple who candidly spoke about their criteria for picking a woman to hire as a surrogate and why this further perpetuates the objectification of women that is at the core of surrogacy.
