Welcome to Episode 1688 of the Italian Wine Podcast. Today, Juliana Colangelo, host of Masterclass US Wine Market, leads a wine2wine Business Forum 2023 session entitled “Can wine podcasts be an effective sales channel?” together with MJ Towler, Adam Teeter and Felicity Carter. Abstract: In 2005 Apple officially added podcasting to its iTunes Music Library. In a live interview in 2006, Steve Jobs demonstrated how anybody could create a podcast using their Mac and share it with the world. In 2013 Apple announced 1 billion podcast subscribers and in 2020 Joe Rogan signed an exclusive podcast deal with Spotify for $100m+. What does this growth mean in terms of podcast potential as a wine sales channel? How can wine producers use podcasting to increase sales? Is it possible to successfully harness podcast audiences and create wine sales through listens? What strategies are available to create wine sales through pods? Which are the most effective wine podcasts for driving wine sales increases? In this round table session, seasoned podcasters MJ Towler, Felicity Carter, Juliana Colangelo IWA and Adam Teeter explore the opportunity for using podcasts as sales channels for wine. More about Juliana Colangelo: Juliana Colangelo is a Vice President at Colangelo & Partners, the leading wine and spirits communications agency in the U.S. Juliana joined Colangelo & Partners in 2013 with previous experience in events, hospitality, and nonprofit development. During her tenure at C&P, Juliana has led the development of the California office, growing the agency's domestic presence to a dedicated office of 13 people with representation of leading wine companies such as Jackson Family Wines, Far Niente, Charles Krug Winery, Foley Family Wines and more. Juliana has completed her WSET Level 3 and her eMBA in Wine Business with Sonoma State University, allowing her to bring a strategic and sales-oriented approach to communications strategy for the agency. In 2021, Juliana was named one of PR News' Top Women in PR in the “Rising Stars” category. In 2022 Juliana became a Vinitaly International Academy Italian Wine Ambassador. This week, we’re kicking off our Passover celebrations, live from the Oppenheimer home. Mark is joined by four of his children as they sit around the Seder table and wonder where, exactly, all these Passover traditions came from. Helping them along the way are co-hosts Stephanie and Liel, and a near minyan of all-star guests. First, historian and Tablet columnist Jenna Weissman Joselit expounds on the material culture associated with the home-based holiday—Seder plates, matzo covers, and afikoman bags—and wonders why Jewish ritual objects don’t always rise to the level of beauty of our other cherished home items. (Stephanie offers some beautiful holiday favorites: Seder plates from Isabel Halley Ceramics, Judaica Standard Time, Via Maris, and Apeloig Collection.) Then we talk to family therapist (and Mark’s sister-in-law!) Dr. Jessica Grogan, who tells us how the rigid archetypes of the Four Children can serve as a useful counter-example for how we see our own children. Adam Teeter of Vinepair shares the secrets of how wine can unlock memories through your olfactory system. Rabbi Gabi Weinberg from The Bnai Zion Foundation shares a story about the significance of buying matzo—and keeping the receipts—in his family. Dovid Bashevkin explains why Passover is such a big deal in the of Jewish holidays. The hosts interview Ben Freeman about his new book, Jewish Pride: Rebuilding a People, and makes the case that Passover is a holiday all about Jewish pride. And finally, our favorite cantorial student, Jacob Sandler, returns to the show to teach the hosts that there is more fun to be had after the Seder meal, specifically in the singing of “Hallel.” Check out last year’s Passover episode, “Our Socially Distanced Seder Guide,” for more on hosting a Seder on your own or for the first time.
