More about Fattoria di Magliano winery: Fattoria di Magliano is located In Maremma Toscana, on a hilly landscape that gently descends towards the Tyrrhenian Sea, Monte Argentario and the Island of Giglio. The soil structure has a medium, rich consistency, it allows for good drainage and oxygenation, it also has great root penetration. These are characteristics that, together with the sun and the wind coming from the sea, the exposure of the vineyards and the low annual rainfalls, facilitate the approach to organic management. Organic management was a choice adopted in 2011, receiving the certification for all our wines from the 2016 harvest onwards. These conditions allow us to obtain wines with great structure and the ability to last over time, but they are also fragrant and very drinkable. This is a family own business, founded in 1997, and the vines were planted from 97-2001. Bortolomiol is located in the heart of the Prosecco DOCG region, in Valdobbiadene. The long tradition of the Bortolomiol family as wine growers goes back to the 18th century and the Winery itself was founded by Giuliano Bortolomiol in 1949. Giuliano, considered a pioneer of the “Charmat” method, was the first to produce a Prosecco Brut in 1960. His dream was “to promote the quality and the awareness of Prosecco wine and make it a prestigious sparkling wine known throughout the world”. Nowadays the same spirit of innovation is carried on by his wife Ottavia, who runs the winery together with her four daughters (Maria Elena, Elvira, Luisa and Giuliana) to confirm the philosophy of the Brand: Quality of the product, a strong link with the territory, respect of nature and environmental sustainability. In the last 15 years the family invested in new technologies with the aim of establishing a more sustainable management in different aspects of the wine business. Always maintaining a strong link with the tradition started by Giuliano. In 2008 Bortolomiol took the decision to change 5 hectares of vineyards over to an organic growing system, a farming approach designed to preserve the natural habitat of the vineyard. Today the Winery owns a beautiful historical complex, just in the centre of Valdobbiadene, known as “Parco della Filandetta”, which hosts the organic vineyard, the first winery and an ancient silk mill, which was renovated and converted into a bright and spacious tasting room. Destination and stop for walks and cycling excursions, with its breathtaking panorama, Monte Fasolo is a landmark in the naturalistic context of the Euganean Hills. The current owner, Luigi Rossi Luciani, a well-known entrepreneur in Padua, and his family have always had an ardent enthusiasm and affection for the area and about 15 years ago they decided to buy and totally restore Le Volpi Estate, directly producing organic wines and EVO. The estate is nowadays an elegant and quiet farmhouse with 14 rooms and a unique infinity pool over the vineyards. In 2017 Mr. Rossi Luciani together with a friend, Mr. Fausto Petagna, decided to buy the Monte Fasolo estate too, which is located just 5 minutes away from Le Volpi, right on the top of the Monte Fasolo hill. The winery had long been abandoned and needed a complete restoration. An impressive work has been done and nowadays the Monte Fasolo Winery is a jewel on the top of the Euganean hills, visiting the winery and walking through the 200 meters long underground cellar is a unique experience to remember! The vineyards are located between 200 and 400 meters asl, the varieties produced are mainly the typical wines from the Euganean Hills, an extremely vocated volcanic area, including,ì among the others Fior d'Arancio DOCG , Cabernet DOC, Merlot DOC and the Bordeaux blend Rosso dei Colli Euganei DOC and Metodo Classico Sparkling wines from different varieties such as Chardonnay, Incrocio Manzoni, Pinot Nero, Glera and Fior d'Arancio too, you really need to come and taste! A wave of new energy in the sign of continuity. About the Estate: The estate, Tenuta di Tavignano, was purchased in 1975 by Stefano Aymerich di Laconi, of Sardinian and Spanish heritage and his wife Beatrice Lucangeli, descendant of a family from the region of Le Marche, boasting an antique tradition in wine production. Tavignano is an estate of 230 hectares in a single body which overlooks the countryside of Cingoli, always known as the Balcony of Le Marche. The Tenuta has been restored through careful conservative restoration, in the respect of the authenticity of the place and, in the early years, it had focused its business activity primarily on the cultivation of cereals, vegetables and forage. In the 1990s the decision was made to enhance the wine-making heritage and to become producers of autochthonous varieties, in sharp contrast with the fashion of the time that privileged international varieties, certain of the great potential of the grape variety that is the prince of these lands: the Verdicchio. Under the guidance of professionals in the sector such as Giancarlo Soverchia, to whom is owed the decision of uprooting the existing vineyards and the vision of adopting the spurred cordon with Verdicchio to aim for the highest expression of the grape variety, the choices perfectly suited the personality of the owners, focused on enhancing both quality and territoriality. In 2004 they took the very satisfying decision of making use of the consulting of the winemaker Pierluigi Lorenzetti and already in 2006 they obtained the first important recognition: the Tre Bicchieri (three glasses) of Gambero Rosso for Misco Reserva. Since then, the awards have consistently followed one after the other. In 2017 Gambero Rosso awarded the Misco 2015 vintage the prize “Bianco dell'Anno” which in fact named it as the year's best Italian white wine. Episode 580 Monty Waldin Interviews Pierpaulo Guerra Pierpaulo Guerra is the Export Manager at Tenuta di Capezzana. In this interview he shares some of the fantastic history and wines this Winery has to offer. The Family at Tenuta di Capezzana In the twenties, Count Alessandro Contini Bonacossi with his wife Vittoria bought the property of Capezzana, then enlarged with the purchase by the Marquis Aman Niccolini, of two neighboring farms, “Il Poggetto” and “Trefiano”. Thus was born the Tenuta di Capezzana, divided into 3 farms and more than 120 farms, dedicated to the production of high quality wine and oil. Alessandro's passion for collecting led him to preserve bottles, so that today Capezzana can boast a collection of historic vintages starting from 1925. In 1945, Augusto Alessandro, son of Alessandro, was joined by his son Ugo, a veteran of the war and a graduate in agriculture, which gradually took over the management of the estate, transforming it from a sharecropping management to a modern company. Ugo, a man of other times but with broad views, he exploited the enthusiasm and passion of his children, leaving each of them to run a business. A perfect combination between Ugo's experience and the novelty of the fourth generation. The first of the children to work alongside their father was Vittorio, who at the age of eighteen took charge of the all-round management of the company, eventually becoming the manager of the campaign and the winemaker, devoting himself particularly to the transformation towards organic. Today Capezzana is managed by a collaboration between the fourth and fifth generation. Beatrice is the sales manager, flanked by her sister Benedetta, the winemaker, and her brother Filippo, who is responsible for the production of oil and the financial part. The fifth generation has already begun to follow the family tradition, and today they work in the company Serena, responsible for hospitality, The History: In Carmignano the vine was already cultivated in the pre-Roman era, about 3000 years ago, as demonstrated by the wine jars and tasting cups found in the Etruscan tombs. A parchment dated 804 was found in the state archive of Florence: it is a rental contract that documents how olive trees and vines were cultivated in Capezzana 1200 years ago for the production of oil and wine. In the early Renaissance, a woman, Monna Nera Bonaccorsi, built the first “casa da Signori” and nine farm houses with the relative vine-growing systems; it was 1475. Other generations and families took turns on the property of the estate: the Cantucci, related to the Medici, and the Bourbon del Monte Marquises. In the eighteenth century a married Cantucci Bourbon enlarged the farm and bought new farms; he also introduced an exemplary administrative method, the documents of which are still preserved today in the company's historical archive. After the Bourbon del Monte, the company passed to the Adimari Morelli and then to the Franchetti Rothschilds and, by the widow Sara de Rothschild, and then to the Contini Bonacossi, our family, in 1920. Episode 575 - Monty Waldin talks to Matthias Oertel About Matthias: Biodynamic wine farm Tenuta del Fontino is more than just a producer of natural wines. It's a family-owned winery focusing on autochthonous grape varieties with a fundamental goal: producing fresh, honest and consistent wines according to the Demeter principles. "From the vine to the glass" – that´s Matthias' vision. "My name is Matthias Oertel, I am 26 years old and obtained a law degree in 2020. I was able to gain experience in the tourism industry at a young age since my family is running a hotel. This is where I got into the wine sector and I am seeing big potential in the future of wine tourism in the Maremma area. For this reason, I am trying to expand the offer around the wine because there is a lot more to discover besides that good glass of wine: a team, a story, a conviction, and above all, nature. Nature means Maremma – and Maremma is unique." About Tommaso: Tenute Squarcialupi - La Castellina di Tommaso Bojola is a winery which extends for 140 hectars, with 40 hectars of vineyard producing mainly Chianti Classico, located in the South West side of the valley, bordering with the town centre of Castellina in Chianti. The historical centre of the winery is the ancient Palazzo Squarcialupi (XV sec.), where there is an ageing cellar, the direct sale, the farm restaurant Taverna Squarcialupi and the Hotel Palazzo Squarcialupi. The Tenute Squarcialupi – La Castellina Farm originates from the powerful Squarcialupi family, in the medieval period, while he started the management of the winery in 1989, together with his wife Monica and later on with his son Cosimo. From 2008 they produced organic grapes and from 2020 organic wines too, authentic wines representing their territory. Together with his son Cosimo just graduated in oenology; together they are introducing new winemaking techniques such as the drying of the Merlot grapes (Supertuscan Reale), the late harvest (Ch. Class. Tommaso Bojola), the spontaneous fermentation (Ch. Class. Squarcialupi Annata), the longtime maceration (Ch. Class. Squarcialupi Riserva e Gran Selezione), the amphora vinification (Ch. This professional training equipped Fabian to become the driving force at La Màgia, responsible for the agronomy and wine-making policy of the estate, as well as handling the entire commercial and marketing side of the business. From their connections at the Istituto Agrario San Michele all’Adige, a professional network of teachers and former students, now producers, has developed, providing a mutual support system from which everyone benefits. This is especially helpful on production issues. In this spirit of co-operation, a warm welcome and hospitality are always offered to student winemakers from all over the world, with the involvement of a number of universities and participation in a number of pan-European projects. The Loacker family has been running its own wineries since 1978, strictly following the principles of biodynamics and homeopathy. This means that in the vineyards of Loacker estates the use of chemistry was completely eliminated by using biodynamic and homeopathic products in the treatment of the vines. Arnica, for example, serves to remedy the damage caused by hail to vines and grapes; the Aconitum is used against sudden infections, while Silicea helps to strengthen the structure of the leaves and shoots. The purpose is to obtain the maximum possible balance of the vine. Now the wines made according to natural criteria, unlike in the past, are a guarantee of high quality. The Loacker family still owns three wineries in three different Italian wine regions (Alto Adige, Montalcino, Maremma) with a total area of 45 hectares of vineyards. The wines produced embrace a wide range so as to be able to conquer all the palates of wine lovers. "Punset" is from the Piedmontese dialect meaning “beautiful hill.” The estate is located in Neive, in the heart of the Langhe area of Piedmont on top of a hill overlooking the historic capital. It was given the nickname by the Count of Neive to describe the view of their lands emerging by the autumn fog viewed from his castle. During the 1980s Marina Marcarino took over the estate and began formally converting the property to organic farming, rejecting the use of all kinds of pesticide and chemical products. Her agronomic practices include minimal use of treatments based on copper and sulfur, preferring biodynamic preparations and embracing the philosophy of Manasobu Fukuoka, also called “agriculture of not doing.” Vineyards are kept green and there is a limited working of the soil with the ideal that the farm is perfectly integrated into nature. History: Their estate has been owned by her family for four generations. However, before Marina formally became a winemaker, the family were making wine as a hobby. Originally, she was actually supposed to become an engineer because her parents wanted her to run the family construction company. However, as a child her grandmother would care for her at vineyards and a their farm, so, she ended up falling in love with farming in general at a young age. This estate saw the first roots of the Sangiovese vine labouring through inhospitable rock centuries ago. Destiny seemed to play a role in Ludmilla Temertey’s adventures while searching for a home in Tuscany. She enlisted the help of a Hermit who had walked every path that ever was created in the region to find her haven and destiny brought her back to Montalcino where she had first come in 1978. In 1997 the abandoned farm house was lovingly restored and named Casa Raia after the matriarch of the family, Raissa Temertey. n 2006, Ludmilla’s daughter Kalyna Temertey Canta and her husband Pierre Jean Monnoyer took over the care of the vineyards and created the winery that is now Azienda Agricola Casa Raia. They restored the old vineyards with unyielding respect for the land that so generously nurtures us all. Espousing a philosophy that is best described as “the vine determines the wine”, Pierre Jean is producing natural wines that are an expression of a deep commitment to the production of authentic, quality wines. Biodynamic agriculture is now practised internationally as a specialist form of organic agriculture.Steiner’s Agriculture Course comprised just eight lectures presented over a ten-day period. The path from proposal to experimentation, to formalization, to implementation and promulgation played out over a decade and a half following the Course. It needs to be understood that in the 1920s chemicals usage in agriculture was growing exponentially and concern started to grow in the agriculture circles.Biodynamic agriculture is now practised in 47 countries (Demeter, 2011) and, while it is nested within the broader organic agriculture movement, it has been at the forefront of organic farming developments, including, for example, the participation in founding the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) (Paull, 2010), and taking one of the earliest stances against synthetic nanomaterials by excluding them from Demeter’s biodynamic food and agriculture standards (Paull, 2011a).In this episode, I spoke with Douglas Wregg director of Les Caves de Pyrene,on what are the principles of Biodynamic farming and how are the famous composts are created and what’s their indented usage, How important it is Demeter and why?
